Chapter 1: Six Months
Meredith Elizabeth Grey has been engaged to Derek Christopher Shepherd for six and a half blissful months. Over two years ago, her husband Will died in a tragic fishing accident where he drowned, leaving Meredith broken and lost. When she had met Derek all he had been interested in was being her friend and helping her get her life together. Little did Meredith know, he would become her life.
She thought of Will every day, leaving a picture of the two of them in her top drawer. Every morning, she ran her fingers over a necklace he had given her. Every now and then she even wore it. Derek never complained and he often told her how it was one of his favorite things she owned. It was part of what made Meredith who she was. It told a story just like the lines on her face.
Meredith never wanted to get married again, but it had been important to Derek. After much debate, she agreed to marry him if they took their time. Babies had been a whole other subject. At first, she had refused but the more they talked and the more she was around kids, she knew she wanted to try and be a mom. So being the unconventional couple they were, they had decided to try for a baby before marriage. It wasn't typical but it made sense for them.
Meredith was a speech therapist and being around children every day made the trying even better. She knew one day they would have a little boy or girl like magic. While she was terrified of becoming her mother, she knew she had to try to be the best. If not for her, then the baby, or for Derek.
Derek left early for work and now it was the evening. Her day at her office had been full of appointments and even an hour session with her favorite child, Liza. The day had been full and on her lunch, break another pregnancy test had come up negative. They had been trying for six months and still nothing happened. Her breasts had been sore this whole week, but still nothing.
"Mer!" Derek called, letting himself into the house. It was just about dinner time, and he had stopped to pick up some food for them so they could just relax. "I'm home!"
"Bedroom!" Meredith called, tossing some socks in the top drawer.
"I got dinner!" He yelled back, putting the food down in the kitchen before heading upstairs to the bedroom. "Hey there."
"What did you bring?" She asked, walking over to the bed as Derek walked in.
"Italian." He smiled, kissing her cheek.
"That sounds so...amazing." She took a deep breath, the sunset reflecting through their bedroom window.
"Cheesecake for dessert."
"Oh..." She smiled.
"How was your day?" He whispered, wrapping his arms around her.
"Good." Meredith smiled.
"Yeah?"
"But another negative test..."
"Hmm."
"I really thought it was going to be positive this time." She turned in his arms, facing him.
"It'll happen."
"We'll see."
"I think it will."
"How was your day?" She asked, pressing soft kisses against his chin.
"Uneventful."
"Really?" She frowned, squeezing his bicep.
"Yeah...it was quiet." He nodded.
"You should have come played with me at work...Liza was there."
"Aw..."
"We played Barbies which apparently I am very good at."
"Oh yeah?"
"According to Liza." Meredith laughed, speaking of the little girl Meredith had helped. When she had come to Meredith, she didn't speak a word. She was so shy and now nobody would ever know Liza knew how to be quiet. It didn't seem possible, but because of Meredith and even some help from Derek, Liza's voice was heard,
"Well, she's a smart girl." Derek smiled.
"I know she is."
"Wanna go eat?"
"Yeah."
"I got your favorites."
"Yeah?" She followed him out of the bedroom.
"Baked ziti...and chicken parmesan."
"Yes!"
"Wine?"
"No." She said quickly.
"Okay."
"I just...I heard it's not always good when you're trying to get pregnant."
"Okay." He whispered, kissing her cheek.
"Maybe you shouldn't have any either." Meredith breathed, as she watched him uncork the bottle.
"Really?"
"I'm just worried that it might affect your sperm count."
"I...okay."
"It's up to you." She said softly.
"If you don't want me to drink it..."
"No...it's not up to me."
"I won't drink it." He whispered, putting down the corkscrew.
"Water?"
"Sure."
"Alright." Meredith stood, walking over to their water dispenser.
"Are you alright?"
"Just tired...nauseas."
"You were nauseas last night." Derek frowned.
"Everyone at work is getting sick...the kids must have things going around their schools."
"You probably shouldn't be eating this."
"Sounds good though."
"Okay." He laughed.
"Maybe we could just head up and watch a movie in bed after dinner." Meredith carried two glasses of water over to the table.
"That sounds good."
"Resume baby making in the morning or something." She replied as he took two containers out of the carry-out bag.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Derek asked.
"Yeah." She smiled weakly.
"Just checking."
"So I was thinking..."
"Yeah?"
"If...when we get pregnant we should change the fixtures in the room across the hall."
"Okay."
"Make it lighter."
"Good idea."
"We can decide on nursery colors another time."
"Yeah it's a little early for that."
"Yeah."
"What are you doing tomorrow?" Derek asked, taking a seat at the kitchen table across from her.
"I don't know yet." Meredith sighed. "My day is clear so I'm not even going into the office."
"I just have a consult in the morning...we can spend the day together."
"That would be nice...we've barely seen each other for the past week."
"If everything goes as planned, I should be back by eleven."
"Perfect."
"Oh...and my mom wants us to come for dinner this weekend."
"Okay." Meredith yawned.
"She keeps asking me when we're going to set a date." Derek sighed, taking a bite of his food.
"For the wedding?"
"Yeah."
'We're not in a rush."
"I know."
"I thought Lexie and Mark's wedding would keep everyone entertained for a while."
"I think it makes my mom want us to get married faster."
"Oh boy."
"No pressure."
"Of course not." Meredith drained her water.
"She knows we want a long engagement." Derek replied.
"And a baby."
"And a baby." He nodded.
"Which is taking too long by the way."
"Sometimes it takes awhile. You know that."
"I'm not one for patience." She giggled.
"I know." Derek smiled.
"You do."
"But I still love you."
"That's good because I did agree to marry you at some point...and to let you get me pregnant...eventually."
"Eventually." He laughed.
"I never knew it could be hard work."
"At least it's fun."
"Oh, it is." She winked.
"We have to enjoy it while we can."
'You think?"
"It's not always easy to find time for that with a baby around."
"Oh."
"But we are us." He grinned.
"We are." She stood, grabbing her empty plate.
"What are you thinking?"
"How amazing bed sounds."
"I'll clean up if you want to head upstairs."
"No that's okay..."
"I don't mind."
'I haven't seen you all day...I'll stay."
"I'll put on my gloves in clean...it'll be sexy."
"Oh...can't wait." She winked.
"Should we take the cheesecake up to bed?"
"Sounds like an amazing idea Doctor." Meredith wrapped her arms around him, nuzzling her nose in his neck.
"Mmm..." Derek smiled.
"Sound good?"
"Sounds great." Derek breathed, turning around and hugging her, kissing the top of her head. He loved her so much and he knew that eventually they would get pregnant, whether it took six months or six years. It was important for them to cherish this time together because whenever they did have a baby, doing this kind of thing would be a little bit more difficult…
What do you guys think?
