- prologue -
Loud footsteps rang through the high-ceiling hallway as a pastel pink haired figure ran forward, heavy, tired breaths escaping her mouth. She skid to a stop at a door with a sign hanging on it, reading "do not enter- for dream's eyes only." She quickly pulled out a ring with some keys on them, fumbling with the keys as she tested them in the lock. No, no, no- Come on, which key is it?! She thought frantically, pushing another key into the hole. She turned it and the lock clicked open, finally. The girl shoved the door open and scrambled in, shutting it behind her and locking the door back. She exhaled with relief before the panic waved over her again as she rushed to a desk against a wall, covered in books, scrolls, quills and ink jars and bottles of potions. She frantically picked up the books, scanning the spines to find the one she needed. She stopped when she had a leather-bound journal in her hands, gripping it tightly. She froze when she heard a loud explosion from behind her and felt a large blast of heat on her back, quickly shoving the book into her satchel she wore. She whirled around to see the locked door now broken in larges pieces on the floor, seeing a male with jet black hair and a fiery look in his eyes. "Step away from. The. Desk," he said in a low growl, holding up his hand. A flicker of flame shot out, the fire growing bigger in his hand.
"Sapnap, stay- stay back," the girl said shakily, gripping her satchel strap.
"Or what? You're gonna call for your boyfriend?" Sapnap said in a sing-song voice, a small smirk tugging at his mouth. "Oh, right, you can't do that, Fae, because he's not here anymore-"
"Shut up!" Fae shouted as she squeezed her eyes shut, fighting back tears. "He's- he's not gone! He's coming back for me, I- I know it!!" She opened her eyes, watching the fire-wielding god take another step closer, practically shoving the flames in her face. She whimpered as she grabbed a bottle of a pearlescent, rainbow-like liquid, gripping the glass bottle shakily. She smashed the bottle on the ground and the liquid hit the ground before it turned into a smoky vapor, causing Sapnap to go into a coughing fit.
He let go of Fae's arm and staggered back, coughing and blinking back tears from the smoke-like vapor in the air. She quickly covered her mouth with the sleeve of her jacket, holding back coughs as she ran past the fire god. She let out a sob as she sprinted down the hallway, shakily pulling the book out of her satchel. Damnit, Dream, keep your journal organized! Fae's mind rang in fear and anger. She flipped to a page and exhaled, quickly reading it. She quickly lifted her head when she heard thundering footsteps coming her way, her breaths quickening. She held out her hand, a wood-carved staff with vines and flowers appearing in her grasp. She ran her finger across a sentence on the page and muttered an incantation, her voice shaky. "Take me to Dream," she added quickly at the end, just as Sapnap turned the corner, running to the girl.
As Sapnap reached to grab Fae's arm, the girl vanished into thin air, the only thing in that hallway being the fire god. "DAMNIT!" He shouted in anger, shooting a blast of flames at where the girl once stood. "We're so fucked," he muttered, turning and stomping back down the hallway.
