First off. I wanna apologize for completely rewriting the beginning.
Reason 1. I could not think of an original way and an enjoyable way to continue forward. I did not like what I kept writing.
Reason 2. I realized during my block that I wanted the story to be more casual, so if you're hoping for an action packed fic then you've come to the wrong place. There will be action, it just won't be the center of attention.
Without further adieu.
Chapter 1: One Big Day For Sure!
In this world of heroes and villains, everyone wants to be a hero and it hurts if you don't make it. The pay for a hero pays quite well, even stopping petty crimes can earn enough to live off. Those who don't make the cut tend to either give up and despair or maybe even turn to villains. This world is harsh on people and none more than the quirkless. Those without quirks make up roughly 20% of the population but make up 65% of minor crimes.
We here at New World Robotics hope to help the little guy. We look to creating and inventing new and improved ways to live in this superpowered world. We don't simply give those who can't walk a pat on the back and a wheelchair, we give them an exoskeleton so they may walk. We don't just put duct tape over a hole in the pool. We rebuild the pool better than ever!
We're building a New World for all and you're invited.
My name is Dexter Stagland Certex. A half English, half Japanese 16 year old boy. My hair tends to hold a brown colour and stays relatively neat. My eyes are literal gold in colour. Speaking of colour, my favorite colour is green.
As a child I always wanted to be a part of New World Robotics and change this world. Today I take my first steps to that dream. Today is the U.A. support course entrance exam and I'm going to ace it!
The exam is split up into 2 parts, a written test and a practical exam. I don't know what the practical exam will make us do but I'm not worried, I've been making things since I was 3. There I built a miniature replica of a part of London out of lego by myself, I would have continued but I ran out of lego.
Anyway, I'm going to hand you guys back to the author, I've got an exam to get to. Cya.
Before he ran out the door he made sure to grab his coat, it was brown and held a steampunk style. Atop his head are a pair of his trusted yellow lensed steampunk goggles. The rest of his outfit also adopted the steampunk look but to a more realistic sense, none of the over the top stuff. He doesn't even wear a tophat… yet, he has contemplated it but he thinks it might be overkill.
He knew he'd make it on time if he walked but he was just too excited to walk, he just kept running at full speeds, earning a few odd glances from people on the streets. Funny enough, his stamina was pretty good. He would often carry or pull a cart of scrap metal to his house from the junkyard. Doing such would naturally build muscle and stamina.
He couldn't run the entire way there though, It's a pretty long distance to travel by foot alone. So he opted for public transportation. On the train he overheard some people around his age talk about the U.A. entrance exam, more specifically the hero course. The hero course was always the most packed of the exams. The support course, general studies and management couldn't hold a candle to it, though general studies is usually the second place that most pick when they fail the hero exam.
While Dexter enjoys watching heroes at work, he has noticed that the majority of them are in it for fame and money and thus usually opt for capturing the villain rather than protecting the surrounding civilians. Civilians should be there in the first place but they should be the priority. Besides, heroes don't think about those with quirks that inhibit a comfortable life but they are something that Dexter thinks of everyday. Thinking about them brings him the resolve he needs to continue down this path.
Here he was, the doors of U.A. standing tall before him, the arches paving the way forward. As sign out the front indicated that this was indeed the location of the entrance exam. Around him were countless students, some talking to each other and others alone. Many are nervous and others a bit over confident… Like him. Most undoubtedly here for the hero course, arguable harder due to the 0.2% acceptance rate.
The amount of people caused Dexter's heart to reactively fasten. He's never been good with crowds. In school he'd distract himself with his work but right now, simply thinking about the exam wouldn't be a good enough distraction.
He hunched forward and clutched his chest as sweat started to manifest around his body. His breathing grew heavier and his ears started ringing. This was the one thing he was worried would happen, social anxiety.
"Hey, are you ok?" He felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned around and saw a girl with light green medium hair with her eyes matching colour. "Do you need to sit down?" She asked. All Dexter could do was nod. "Well I don't see anywhere to sit out here, there must be chairs inside somewhere. Come on." The girl held his arm and led him indoors, making sure to not go too far.
Sure enough there were chairs in the lobby, the exam doors were open but it was not yet necessary to head in yet. The girl found two empty chairs sitting next to each other and brought Dexter to sit down there and sat down next to him. His heart rate started to slow and so did his breathing, as far as he was concerned he wasn't out of the water yet but at least he found a shallow area to catch his breath.
"I'm Toru Hagakure by the way." She made sure to speak softly.
"De- Dexter Certex." He said weakly. He removed his hand from his chest and laid his head back. "Thank you. For that."
"No problem. U.A's small acceptance rate is bound to make everyone nervous." Dexter turned his head to look at her and saw her smiling right back at him.
"It's not the exam that has me nervous, it's my powerful social anxiety. I can't stand groups of people unless I'm distracted by something practical." He took some long breaths to help calm himself down before sitting up right.
'It must be hard doing a lot of things if his anxiety is that bad.' Hagakure thought. She suddenly got an idea, "Why don't we talk to distract you?"
One look at her told him that the distraction was just for him. Her face showed that she was nervous about the exam. "Sure, looks like we both could use the distraction." He chuckled.
Hagakure was surprised by his ability to figure out that she was nervous. "Wow. You must be considerably observant to figure that out."
Now Dexter was slightly confused. "What do you mean by that? It's written all over your face. I'm actually surprised it took me this long to figure that out." He looked at her like she wasn't making sense.
"What do you mean it's written all over my face? I'm invisible!" She clearly wasn't invisible, not to Dexter anyway. He started to look her over, trying to see what she meant.
"You're not…" He said skeptically.
Hagakure was not convinced he could see her. "Ok then. What colour is my hair?" She looked visibly annoyed even.
"Kinda like a mint green, same as your eyes."
Hagakure was utterly shocked. No one but herself has ever been able to see her before, not even her own parents. "You really can see me, can't you." She grew a big smile. "How can you see me! What's your quirk!" She got right up into his face, her eyes sparkling in wonder.
"I don't really like talking about my quirk." He's self conscious about his quirk but the sparkling in her eyes and the wonder they hold. He didn't want to disappoint her, so he took a deep breath. "My quirk is to scan and analyze. Anything I look at gives me any information I want about it. From every mole on someone's body to the very make of their atoms and it doesn't just work on people. I can visibly break down and object and see the parts used to create it. I can even find the fast way to the shop if I wanted to. Because I can't analyze what I can't see, any kind of visual impairment or illusion gets nullified to me. I imagine that's why I can see you."
"That's so cool. Are there downsides?" This wasn't the normal reaction that someone has when they hear about his quirk. Seeing her interest makes him want to continue talking about his quirk.
"2 sorta. During the use of my quirk, my eyes strain themself. If I use them too much then they bleed. The second downside is that they glow, so it can't be used sneakily." He began feeling more and more comfortable talking to Hagakure and almost completely forgot about the exam.
"There's actually a 3rd downside. Most people deem it to be creepy and call me a perv. I get it, I can literally break a body down with my eyes, effectively removing clothes. I can also get someone's 3 sizes at a single glance or learn something strange about them. You're different though." Dexter gave Hagakure a genuine smile, something he doesn't usually give people. Sure his default emotion is a smile but a genuine smile is different from feeling the joy of your craft.
Hagakure actually blushed, though no one but those two could tell. "Right uh. hehe… Course! What course are you going for! I'm going for the hero course myself!" She was desperate to change the subject.
"Oh," Dexter was caught off guard "I'm headed for the support course. Inventing and creating has always been a passion of mine."
Suddenly a teacher came into the lobby. "Those of you not already in the respective auditorium, please head there now! You will be told about the exams there!"
"Speaking of courses." Dexter stood up from his chair, he turned around and offered Hagakure a hand. As she grabbed it, she noticed how rough and firm they were. He pulled her to her feet. "Thanks for talking to me, it was fun. I wish you the best in your exam and I hope we'll meet again." He then left before Hagakure got a chance to say goodbye.
The auditorium was huge, it took Dexter some time to find his chair. Luckily it was on an edge so at least he wasn't surrounded. After everyone sat down, a woman took the stage.
She then began discussing the exam. The practical was to come after the written test. To be expected. The practical was to consist of building a robot of sorts. They didn't expect the examinees to complete the robot, just to get as far as they can and depending on how complete they were and how stable it was, they would be graded. The robot they would be building was to be made with lightweight materials so they would be easy to carry. Tools and equipment were to be sourced by the school so no issues there.
After the explanation everyone left the auditorium and moved to the written tests area. A group of 20 or so examinees would enter a classroom, complete a test and leave. Each course had their own tests, they would be focused on certain subjects but all included math and japanese. The support course focused more on the science side of things.
Dexter entered his assigned classroom. It was a normal looking classroom with not much going on, except for the examiners watching for cheating. Pencils, pens and other stationary were laid out across the desk. Tests were passed out amongst the students as they were told to not open until told.
He had 1 hour to complete the test. Once completed, you were to hand in the tests up front or if you wanted to give up.
Eventually the students were given the go ahead and opened their tests. The grumbling of students told him that the test was supposed to be hard but one look at his own erased that idea. If anyone were to make a safe machine to give to heroes, then this was to be the bottom line they would need.
He put pen to paper and began the test. None of it was hard to him and he even caught a trick question. He was done within 8 minutes of the test and handed it in to the examiner. "Our first quitter." He said disappointed.
"Nope." Replied Dexter as he left the room. The teacher didn't believe it. He opened the test and paled as he read it. Not a single wrong answer, he was even more impressed that he saw through the trick question.
After waiting 50 minutes, it was finally time for the practical. The room it was to take place in was enormous. Nearly 80 meters tall. It made Dexter wonder what they would need such a tall room for.
Each examinee was to have a copy of the robot to examine and help them build it. In Dexter's hands you might as well just hand him the blueprint for it.
Everyone was assigned a location to work and a pile of parts to work with. This time they would have more time to work, being 2 hours. Once again the signal was given and people started inspecting the metal contraption of the robot given to them. Many climbed on top of them and looked into nooks and crannies. Dexter simply had to look at them and activate his quirk.
He applied his goggles to his eyes and activated his quirks. His eyes began to glow gold as his vision gained a golden filter to it. Looking at the robot gave him tons of information, the materials in use and the stains on them. He visually broke the robot down to look at each part individually.
From the outside it looked as if Dexter wasn't doing anything but looking in the direction of the robot and it didn't make a good impression to the examiner Power Loader. Power Loader was about to go over to him and ask if he was ok, when Dexter suddenly moved over and grabbed a motor from the pile and placed it on the table and began tinkering with it. Power Loader decided to leave him be after that.
To Dexter this was just like playing with lego, only more dangerous as the school is making the examinee handle non-lethal explosives but hey, it's not like lego isn't dangerous. Speaking of non-lethal explosives, one was acidentally set off by an examinee, exploding in a pink smoke. They were kindly asked to leave and promptly failed the exam by failing to handle things safely.
Power Load was impressed by quite a few of the examinees. Many of them have actually made good progress, something he wasn't expecting. However, two examinees have caught his attention. Dexter Certex and Mei Hatsume, both have already moved on to attaching the metal plating and there's still 30 minutes left.
According to the written examiners, both students finished around the same time, caught the trick question and scored 100%. He was sure that these two were something special and to watch.
Eventually the buzzer buzzed and the exam was over. The examinees were told that they will get a letter in the coming week telling them if they got in or not.
Dexter moved his goggles from his eyes to his head, put all his tools back the way they were and headed out of the exam room like the other examinees. Due to the large crowds, he couldn't leave right away or risk a redo of earlier. So he went and hid in the toilets for 10 minutes while we waited for everyone to leave.
He sorta hoped to see Hagakure on his way out but he expected her to not wait for him, why would she? That meeting that morning, she had no reason to wait for him. So it was certainly a shock when she came running out of the building shouting "Wait up!"
Dexter turned around to find Hagakure running up to him, panting. He stopped and waited for her to catch up. When she caught up she grabbed her needs trying to catch her breath. "I thought you would have gone home already."
"We-took a-bus." She spoke between huffs of breaths.
"You took a bus?" Took a bus where? The practical? It makes sense actually. He didn't hear any other explosions around the school, they must have gone somewhere.
After Hagakure caught her breath, she readjusted her posture and continued. "Yeah. We took a bus to the practical."
By "we" she probably meant her and the rest of the hero candidates but Dexter didn't see anyone else. "Where are the rest of the hero course candidates then?" He asked.
"I ran here. I wanted to try and catch you." Dexter blushed, he was not expecting that.
He looked away and began rubbing the back of his neck, "Well erm… ahem," he cleared his throat, "you caught me. Shall we… get moving then?" He pointed behind him to the gate using his thumb.
"Sure! Come on!" She grabbed his arm and started pulling out of the school gates, causing Dexter to grow even redder. "How did your exam go?" The two began talking about the day on their way home.
Surprisingly, they lived somewhat close, just a station apart. Giving them plenty of time to talk. Even if Satan had other plans for Dexter and he failed the exam, at least he made himself a friend. He couldn't help but loosen up around.
There we go. The new and improved Chapter 1. While it doesn't hold the same story as the other more vigilante style, I prefer this one, like how you prefer chocolate over hot leaf water. The opposite of me in fact.
Anyway, let me know if i've done something wrong like someone's Out Of Character. I'm always looking to improve my writing. I got dreams and websites to place 'em on.
Luva fellas and fellettes. Bye!
