Summary: Some rules are meant to be followed. Others were made to be broken. John decided the rule of not writing about his ordeals was one of the latter. Years later, Alex finds a notebook in the attic and decides he needs to know what it means. His decision changes a lot.
Slight AU (Alternative Universe), characters acting slightly OOC (Out Of Character).
'Cause you're a Natural
Prologue
In one world, John and Helen Rider die in a plane explosion, betrayed by their son's godfather, who planted a bomb on board. There were limited photos and no letters to help little Alex get a sense of his parents. Sure, Ian could tell some stories (heavily edited to preserve the Official Secrets Act), but they were biased based on his emotions and thoughts at the time. His parents stuck to the rules MI6 imposed on them, and others paid the price.
In this one, John bends the rules. He writes in a notebook, never mentioning people's full names, never fully describing what he did. He unknowingly copies his former protege, writing in the Cyrillic alphabet (John was the only person in MI6 who spoke Russian when he started writing. By the time he was halfway through writing in the notebook, only the secretarial staff weren't fluent. Not wanting to go through the hassle of rewriting everything in a new language, he persisted).
Anyone who read the notebook without knowing his job could be forgiven for thinking John was a lousy travelling salesperson. Or an international journalist. Or even an author who was writing his novel in diary format.
In this world, a boy who thought he knew the best spots in the house for playing hide and seek (he didn't - his uncle did) hides in the attic and finds a notebook written in an unfamiliar language. A keen puzzle solver, he dedicated countless hours to deciphering the meaning of the notebook.
In this world - well, let's see what happens.
(A.N: This is my first foray into writing an Alex Rider fanfic. I hope it isn't too bad.
The name came from a lyric in the song "Natural" by Imagine Dragons. I think it could be used to apply to most of the characters who work in MI6 and Scorpia, especially the lyrics:
'Cause you're a natural
A beating heart of stone
You gotta be so cold
To make it in this world
Yeah, you're a natural
Living your life cutthroat
You gotta be so cold
Yeah, you're a natural
Please let me know your opinion on the song choice)
