Prompt: Could you write a fic about Densi going skating and they see a kid playing, the ice cracks beneath him and Deeks jump to save him in the cold water?
"How did you even know this was here?" Kensi asked, breath puffing out in front of her as she followed Deeks through some snow-coated brush. When Deeks had suggested they leave the confines of Mammoth's many amenities, she'd been hesitant, but once they got deeper into the woods, she'd appreciated the peace and sound of nature.
"I used to come here every winter when I was a kind and teenager," Deeks explained. He looked over his shoulder, upper lip lifted in a half-grin. He had a pair of black skates swung over one shoulder and another white pair they'd rented for her hanging from the other. "We couldn't afford the resort, so we'd explore the wood instead. I found this one day."
He moved a long branch aside, revealing a snowy embankment and an oblong pond. The sun glinted off the ice, giving off a glittering, magical air.
"Wow, it's beautiful," Kensi whispered.
"Yep." Deeks looked around with a pleased expression then took her hand, tugging her forward. The ice and snow crunched beneath their feet in the otherwise quiet clearing. "There's a couple rocks over there that make a perfect bench if you brush them off."
It seemed someone had beat them to cleaning off the rocks Deeks mentioned, which were surprisingly smooth and stable, if a little chilly. Deeks had his skates on and tied with enviable surprise, tucking in the laces with a speed that spoke of his time spent playing ice hockey in high school. Kensi was significantly slower.
When he was finished, he dropped onto one knee and patted his thigh expectantly.
"C'mon, foot up," he instructed. Rolling her eyes, Kensi carefully placed her blade on his jean-clad thigh, vaguely worried that she would slip and slice right through Deeks' skin. He didn't seem to share her concerns and laced her skates up just as efficiently as he had his own. "How's that feel?" he asked, setting her foot down on the ground.
Kensi wiggled her ankle a couple times, testing out the support and tightness of the boot and nodded.
"Perfect." She clung to his arm as they walked the couple yards to the pond and stepped over the short embankment onto the ice. "Are you sure it's safe?" she asked, eyeing a sign that warned about shallow on the other side of the clearing.
"It should be. Just stay towards the middle," he suggested. Despite Kensi's minor misgivings, the ice didn't so much as creak as Deeks confidently started skating backwards in a smooth weaving pattern. Giving her a disarming smile, he made a beckoning gesture, and Kensi couldn't resist.
After a few minutes, Kensi felt sure enough to manage without Deeks' support. While she made a wide half circle, he raced around her and even showed off with a spin or two.
"So, did you catch more girls with ice skating or surfing?" Kensi asked. She put on a burst of speed and caught him from behind, wrapping her arms tightly around his waist. He didn't seem affected or bothered by the impact, just tangling his arms through hers.
"Well, since California is sunny for a good part of the year and I was only on the hockey team for a year, definitely surfing." He turned, grinning down at her. "Don't worry though; you're the only girl I'm interested in impressing with my athletic prowess."
"Oh, athletic prowess, huh?" Rolling her eyes, Kensi dug her fingers into his side, which made Deeks yelp and jerk away from her. Somehow, he escaped her grasp and skated away. "Hey, no fair running away."
Kensi clambered after him, the picks of her blades catching in the ice in her haste to capture him again. About halfway across the pond they heard a crashing sound came from the woods and a moment later, a fluffy Collie came darted out onto the ice. It skirted the edges of the water.
Shortly after that, a boy, maybe about 10 years old and dressed in a thick wool jacket, crashed through the brush after him and skidded onto the ice.
"Jasmine!" he shouted. The dog didn't respond, and he stumbled forward. "Get back here."
"Hey, watch out–" Deeks warned just as the boy neared the edge of the pond. There was a horrifying cracking noise and the boy screamed, dropping through the ice and into the water.
Deeks sped towards him, reaching the hole as the boy's futilely grasped at the slippery ice, lost his hold, and disappeared from sight. Skidding to a stop on the edges of his blades, Deeks fell to his knees beside the hole.
"Oh my god," Kensi whispered as she reached the spot. The hole was less than two feet in circumference and jagged. She saw some movement, but it was difficult to tell what was going on in the dark water.
Before she could even comprehend what he was doing, Deeks started tearing at the laces on his skates, getting them off in record speed, followed by his coat.
"Do you think you can pull us back out?" he asked tersely.
"Yes," Kensi answered immediately, even as her heart pounded with the thought of Deeks disappearing into the murky depths along with the boy.
Nodding, Deeks swung his legs into the water and supported himself on the edges of the ice for a moment before lowering completely into the water. He hissed in surprise at the sudden cold, sucked in a deep breath and then ducked under the water completely before she could even think of stopping him.
Kensi cupped her hands over her mouth, each second agonizingly long. After a half minute, she saw something dark touch the surface of the ice a few feet away, but she couldn't tell if it was Deeks or the boy. Air capacity and hypothermia statistics ran through her head.
When more than a minute had passed, she sank to her knees over the hole, tears streaming down her cheeks. She shook, senseless to the cold wind whipping her cheeks and ice melting into her jeans. Not sure what else she could do, Kensi made a snap decision and starting yanking at her skates.
She'd just removed one boot when the water shifted, lapping over the edges of the hole and a damp blonde head burst through. Deeks gasped and choked, a smaller body braced against his chest.
"Oh, thank god," Kensi gasped.
Wordlessly, he hefted him higher towards Kensi, chin dipping beneath the water with the effort. Kensi looped her hands under the boy's armpits and dragged him onto the ice, his body limp and heavy with water. She pressed her fingers to his throat and found a weak, but reasonably steady beat as she laid him down.
Turning him onto his back, she started chest compressions. After a few pushes, he jerked and couched, expelling several mouthfuls of water. He didn't open his eyes, but his chest rose and fell with steady breaths.
Then she turned back to Deeks; he tried to pull himself out, but his fingers were clumsy and slipped over the ice without finding any purchase.
"Baby, I got you." She lay down on her stomach, reaching down into the water to get a good grip around Deeks' waist. Between them, they tugged until enough of his body was out of the water, that Kensi could slide him the rest of the way. They stumbled onto the ice, soaking wet, and shivering.
Deeks collapsed against her, his head falling against her chest.
"The boy," he managed to gasp out.
"He's ok," Kensi assured him, reaching one hand out to check, that it was true. He was still breathing, though unconscious. Deeks nodded, collapsing completely, shivers running through them.
Whispering a litany of thank yous to herself, Kensi pulled the boy between them, one hand clasped around the back of Deeks' neck, and grabbed her phone from the inside of her coat.
A/N: I hope this was suitable whumpy. We can assume that after calling local authorities and OPS, Kensi dragged them all off the ice to be taken to the hospital.
We'll just pretend that a pond like this wouldn't be fenced off.
