Chapter 2
Rayla touched Callum's shoulder. "Listen, Ah need you tah give me the eggs and dragonling. Ah have tah get them tah the roof right away."
"What? Why?" Ezran asked as he was still holding the Sky Dragon egg."You need tah trust me." She said. "Right, right. That makes sense. We go way back. Like that one time, ten minutes ago, when you chased me through the castle trying to stab me? Good times." Callum said with a frown. "You might not realize it, but Ah'm tryin' ta help you. Any moment now, others will be arrivin'. Others like me." Rayla said. It took Callum a moment before it clicked. "Assassins." He said grimly. "Hopefully if they see the eggs and the Star Dragonling are still alive, they might stop this mission."
"You really think that will work?" Ezran asked. Rayla's shoulders slumped. "Ah don't know. The leader… is mah Uncle Runaan. And he can be… stubborn and hardheaded. But Ah've got tah try." She admitted. Both boys looked undecided. Ezran shook his head. "I'll take you to the roof" He decided, and started walking, Callum at his side.
"Stay here. Ah'll go out see if he's here yet. At mah signal come out. Ok?" Rayla said and both boys nodded. She walked out and felt watched. "You're here. Ah know you are."
"Rayla," A male voice called out. "You defied me." She stepped forward. "Uncle, you need tah call off the mission." She begged. "You've lost your mind." He scoffed. "Please, listen tah me. Ah've found somethin', the dragon eggs that we thought destroyed, they are all ok!" She said. "That's impossible." He said with a sneer. Rayla shook her head. "They weren't destroyed! They were stolen! The High Dark Mage o' Katolis was goin' tah use them fo' dark magic, but the human prices found them, and they're only tryin' tah help-"
"No. Humans are liars! This is a trick and a trap. You're a fool, Rayla." He said. Callum couldn't take it anymore and stepped out from hiding. "She's not a fool. What she's telling you is true." Callum said. "You've made a terrible mistake." Runaan said, notching an arrow to his bow. Callum brought the satchel to the front of his body and flipped the cover open showing all four eggs and the sleeping Star Dragon hatchling. Runaan's eyes widened and his bow clattered to the ground. "By the Primal elements. It is true." He seemed to steel himself and picked his bow and the fallen arrow back up. "However it does not change the fact that King Avizandum is dead by your King's hand. Justice must be met!" He demanded. Callum held up a hand. "Just hear me out. It's true. King Harrow did kill Thunder. I won't deny that. But that action was fueled by his hatred after Thunder killed his wife… my and Ezran's mother. And perhaps she wouldn't be dead if us humans hadn't trespassed into Xadia. But we did it for good reason. The death on one magma titan, to save millions of people from starving. I'm saying is right now the human kingdoms and Xadia… we are in this horrible cycle. We come and need magic things you retaliate and kill us, we retaliate with more death, and then you sneak in to kill us. At this rate it will never end, it just ends in the death of everyone. Revenge does nothing. It doesn't bring back those who are lost, it just creates more pain and sadness. If we make a stand, here and now, and say, no more! We say lets stop, and think about peace. The dragonlings here are alive, lets make a lasting peace so there is no more pain or suffering. But love, and change." Callum said. "Where did that come from?" Ezran whispered at Callum's elbow. "I have no idea." Callum whispered back as Runaan's brow wrinkled in thought. He sighed and dropped his bow, on purpose this time. He reached in a bag on his hip and lit a pure white flare and threw it in the sky. When they could see again, he was now flanked by the other four assassins, who like him stared in amazement at the five eggs and the sleeping Star Dragonling. "Despite the fact that all our hands will now fall off due tah our bindin's, should your King be in agreement, Ah accept your terms o' peace. Prince Callum and Prince Ezran." He said. They grinned and all cheered. Rayla was relieved as she knew this could have gone very bad. "Callum can I have a page of your sketch book? I'll send a missive with Bait." Ezran said. He nodded. Ezran wrote a bunch of stuff down rolled it up and tied it to his glow toad who then hopped off, fairly quickly. "Bait knows a secret way to dad's chambers. When he sees Bait he'll know we didn't leave like we said we would." Ezran said. Callum nodded. "Now we just gotta wait." So they all sat. "What did you write?" Callum asked. "Pretty much everything. That we found the eggs everyone thought were destroyed by Lord Viren, and that we talked all the assassins into considering peace if dad wanted it too." Ezran said. Callum nodded. Not five minutes later, Harrow rushed up the parapet, minus his armor and stared. There were the eggs as Ezran said, and not too far away were the MoonShadow assassins their weapons on the ground, their hands on show. A sign of peace. Though understandably they were all tense. "So its true? You want… peace?" Harrow asked disbelief clear. "Despite the fact that we bound ourselves tah you, and your heir's death, and havin' not killed you will result in all o' us losin' our hands, yes. Your step-son Callum, made an impressive speech, that has changed mah mind. He was right. That revenge brings nothin' but more sorrow and pain, and that it is a cycle that might never end unless someone stands up and says, no more. As the leader o' this group, Ah too wish for peace." Runnan said. Harrow grinned. He clapped a hand on Callum's shoulder, who staggered. "I'm proud of you Callum. I agree to peace. I think though, it would have more meaning if Ezran and Callum helped deliver the eggs back to Storm Spire." Harrow said extending a hand towards Runaan. Runaan blinked, smiled and took Harrows hand. "Agreed. We will protect them as best we can." He promised. Within an hour they were on their way now being protected by the ones who had sworn death, only earlier that day.
In the castle, after Callum and friends had left
Harrow tiredly sank into his throne, his work not yet complete. Truly a King's work was never done. "Lieutenant-Guard Ferrow, take a company of your best and capture Viren and his children. Bring them to me in shackles. I need to know how deep the corruption lays." Harrow ordered ideas already swimming in his head with the revelation of peace from the five assassins, just moments ago. Within an hour Viren and his two children where kneeling before him shackled. Ferrow was holding Viren's staff. "What is it now Harrow? I was just trying to help you! We don't have time for this, those assassins could be here any second!" Viren said. "Just an hour ago I got a message from Ezran's pet glow toad Bait. Bait was holding a message from Ezran. Not only did this tell me they hadn't left, but a few revelations. I quickly ran to the parapets, where all six Assassins were waiting, not to kill me, but their leader extended his hand in peace. Not only that but the eggs you said you destroyed, were alive and well, and one had even hatched. Though that one was under a dark spell to keep them asleep. Explain yourself." Soren turned white and turned to gape at his father and sister, agog. Viren looked guilty, and Claudia looked only shocked at the fact the King didn't know about the hatched dragonling and the eggs, and that the assassins wanted peace. "I have nothing to say. It is true I lied about the eggs. I had hoped to find some use for them as they would be powerful reagents for any spell. I had been keeping them near my rooms, but then one hatched. The thing tried to attack me, and then escape. I put it under a spell of sleep and locked it,and the rest away. I rather would have eggs than six sleeping creatures. At least Claudia would be able to use the one that hatched once it had matured. I admit being surprised at the fact the Assassins stopped at seeing their survival, and changing their minds." Viren said. "Father you said you told him! And that you were keeping them, so that the elves and dragons couldn't use them!" Claudia burst out. "of course not. They were eggs. Eggs and baby dragons can't hurt anyone." Viren scoffed with a sneer at Claudia. She looked away pouting. Harrow turned his gaze to the boy. "Soren. Did you know anything about this?" "My King… I swear I didn't know anything! I had a feeling that dad was hiding something, I'm not stupid, but I never imagined he was hiding something this big!" Soren said, his eyes wide. "Luetenant-Guard Ferrow, realease Soren. He is free to go back to being a CrownGuard." Harrow said and Soren was released. He instantly scooted away from his father and sister. "In the next few days I will be calling a Council between myself and the other rulers and tell them what has transpired. Until we can decide what to do about this hope of peace, lock Viren and Claudia in the dungeon, in seperate cells, that are not right next to each other." Harrow ruled. A few guards nodded and dragged the two dark mages away.
Later that night, somewhere in the forests of Katolis
"So I'm confused. What is a paragon? Why are paragon's so special? Why did Claudia think the sleeping baby was one?" Callum rambled. Rayla sighed. "Ah suppose mah uncle and the others can be trusted tah keep watch fo' now. Its a long explanation but Ah'll try. Don't interrupt me." Callum and Ezran both nodded. "First off Ah need tah borrow some paper and a pencil." She said and Callum gave her his notebook – which turned out to be a sketchpad. "So that thing you used earlier, is ah Primal stone. It contains the Primal o' Sky. Primal Stones are the only way humans can use Primal magic. There are six original Primals. Earth, Sun, Ocean, Sky, Moon, and Stars. Each Primal has two Paragons. One elven Paragon and one dragon Paragon. Only Mages can be Paragons. Paragon dragons, are also mages, and grow much larger than a normal dragon. Should a dragon Paragon take a consort, their consort also grows tah a larger size. Upon birth a Paragon has the symbol of their Primal upon their forehead. And sometimes a second paragon is born, but its more that Primal's way o' makin' sure if anythin' happened tah the first there would be someone tah take their place. And yes, magic is semi-sentient. If something happens that one or both Paragons go insane, are corrupted, or become a traitor to their Primal, the mark vanishes. In times past the Kings were always the Star Paragons. But the last Star Dragon Paragon was killed in the war, and the last Star Paragon was a traitor and thus executed. Startouch elves and Star Dragons were rare tah start with, but even with the few that are still around, none have been chosen tah be the new Star Paragons. Which is why it was the Sky Paragon who was the last king. A bunch o' different Dragon eggs were laid and it was unknown which o' them would be Paragons, and thus the new Dragon King or Queen."
"Why does being a Paragon matter?" Ezran chirped. She glared. "Only a Paragon can become King. The dragon Paragon would be the King o' dragons and his or her Elven partner would be the King of well, everything else. Usually succession is by Primal type. The order is Stars, Moon, Sky, Ocean, Sun, and Earth. If that sleepin' Star dragon is a Paragon, then he or she is the new dragon prince or princess. Of the eggs Ah saw there, there is one o' each type. Which is good! Seein' as the only known Dragon Paragons left are the Sun Dragon Paragon and he's insane, and old, and not likely tah change. The only elven Paragon left is the Moon Paragon, who is also older and insane. Can Ah see the young Star Dragon again?" She asked. Callum nodded and opened the pack and they all peered inside. To no-one's surprise they were still asleep, but there upon the youngling's forehead was the star primal, glowing a soft white with a dark purple edge. "Yup. Looks like that human girl was right, this dragon is the Dragon Prince or Princess. It's impossible tah tell what gender they are without lookin' under their tail, which is horribly rude or wakin' them. And it seems your High Dark Mage put a sleeping spell on them." Rayla said. Callum frowned. "How would one, theoretically break that spell?" He asked. "The only ones tah be able tah break a spell would be a star mage, or a moon mage." Runaan said, popping out of seemingly nowhere. Callum and Ezran shrieked in surprise.
"Sorry. My bad." Runaan winced. "The closest one would be Moon Paragon Lujanne at the Moon Nexus. It is on the way. We can pop in, ask her to undo the spell and then be on our way." He said. "The only problem with that plan is that she's pretty cracked." Rayla said with a frown, "Cracked?" Ezran asked. "Crazy. When the last dragon King, Avizandum, was still alive, one o' the things he did was create a breach between the human lands and Xadia." Rayla translated. The humans nodded. "What you may not know, is the Moon Nexus, the place where the Moon Primal is the strongest, was on the human side o' the breach. The Moon Paragons live there normally. Well as you know its very dangerous tah go between Xadia and the human kingdoms unless you know the way. By the time the breach happened the Moon Dragon Paragon had been very old and sick and died not long after layin' his last egg at the Storm Spire, which is the Sky Nexus. He laid it there because he wanted tah make sure his child was reared by the King. He was sick for a long time and that's why Avizandum was king and not him. As a result Lujanne has been alone for a very long time… and is a bit… cracked. When we do create peace and the new Moon Dragon Paragon has reached 18 years, Ah figure he or she will let Lujanne retire and pick a new elven Moon Paragon. Even if her insanity could be cured by the Star Dragon Paragon, she is old, and probably doesn't have many years left tah her. It would just be better for the Moon Primal to have a new Moon Paragon." Rayla said. "Should we even hatch any of them?" Ezran asked. "As much as Ah'd like tah say yes, even one Dragon hatchlin' will be a handful once they are awake. Five o' them… it would be chaos. When they are young they are much like cats. Contrary, likely tah do the opposite thing, and easily frightened. It will be easier tah just leave them as they are, until we can get them tah the Dragon Queen and then they can all be raised together, whether they are all paragons or not." Runaan said. "Ok, but theoretically, how would one hatch them?" Callum asked. "Depends on the species. Rayla you can explain. Ah'm goin' back tah scoutin'." He said and vanished again.
Rayla sighed. "Tah hatch any dragon they must be outside, and exposed tah whatever else they need tah hatch." The boys nodded. "Stars is first even though the Star dragon is already hatched. Star Dragons can only hatch durin' a new moon, or a lunar eclipse. Moon Dragons can only hatch durin' a full moon, or on all hallows eve. Sky Dragons can only hatch if they are exposed tah a thunderstorm. Ocean Dragons can only hatch if they are underwater durin' a tsunami, hurricane, or in a whirlpool. Sun Dragons can only hatch at mid-day during the summer equinox while in lava or in a bonfire. And Earth dragons can only hatch during the sunlight hours during spring equinox while being half buried in the soil near the roots of a Vine Tree." She explained. "So the easiest to hatch would be Stars and Moon?" Callum asked. Rayla nodded. "Which is kinda funny, considerin' Stars and Moon are the longest lived." She said with a smile. "Different Primals have different life spans?" Callum squeaked. "Yes. The shortest lived is of course humans at 100 years max. Then come Earth who live to be around 600 years. Then its Sun who live around 800 years. Then its Ocean who live around 1000 years. Then its Sky who live around 1,500 years. Then its moon who live around 2000 years. Finally the Stars who are immortal unless killed. That goes for both Dragon-kind and elves. In Xadia everyone has a stars-given true love, aka life-bonded that is revealed on that person's 18th birthday. Usually that person is of the same Primal as you are. If not, then they both end up with the same lifespan as the longer lived person. So for example if a EarthBlood's life-bonded was a MoonShadow elf then they would live as long as their MoonShadow partner." Rayla explained. "That's so cool, that elves are promised someone to love and to love them in return." Callum sighed. "It comes with a heavy price. You can choose not tah complete that bond. If you do its fo' life. There's no turnin' back once yah complete the bond. If one person in a completed bond dies, the other does as well, no matter how long their lifespan." "That's so sad!" Ezran gasped. Rayla nodded. "That's why ever since the start o' the war, no-one has completed their bond, just in-case they end up dyin'. It's still sad, and a shock when their life-bonded die, but the other person will be able to keep on going, and live their full natural life-span." She said. "What happens if your life-bonded is a human? Does that even happen?" Callum asked. "It has happened and that's all Ah can say on the matter. That's somethin' you will have tah ask the Star Dragon Paragon, once we get that spell off o' them that is." She said and Callum nodded and closed the satchel once again. "Well hopefully with the return of these eggs and the Star Dragon Paragon, everyone can be at peace, and can complete their bonds without fear." Callum said. Rayla smiled and nodded. "All right, enough o' storytime. Lets get some sleep. We will need all the sleep we can get." She said and the boys nodded and they all fell asleep.
