Chapter 10: Old Flames Forever Lit

I had gotten dressed fully and was awaiting Sona in the Council Room. This was honestly becoming more of a home to me than any other place I had, now tell a teenager you feel at home at school, most of these guys would look at me like an idiot. While I was looking for spare clothes I realized that my favorite jacket was burned away and I have a feeling who left me this one. It had a bear on the front, not a ferocious one, a cute one. Like cutesy to where it was cringe. "No thanks Momo... I'll just wear a T-shirt."

Looking through the clothes I found a white T-shirt and a pair of jeans I could wear. They looked alright, and nothing on it to stand out, my favorite kind of clothes. Now that I don't have scars I can really be a face in the crowd instead of the monster in the mix. It was in my musings I had heard the door open up. I turned to see Sona, just in time to catch her as well. I felt all the strength of a Devil as she squeezed my back and it popped in 3 places, felt pretty good too. "Oh Maou you are okay! I was worried, Luca!"

I tried to shrug through gritted teeth and spoke with a rasp to my voice. "Well it's me so of course I was gonna be fine. Might not make it to lunch if you don't ease up, Sona." I then felt her squeeze tighter and I sounded like a wheezing bag as I exhaled everything. I was able to see her now looking at me with a genuinely pissed expression.

"Luca..." I heard the ice in that tone and could see her staring daggers at me like a disappointed parent. "I... was worried about you. You were so reckless. You almost died and I am not foolish enough to think I am strong enough to resurrect you as a Devil. You. Almost. Died." She then tried to stand taller as she squeezed me and my body screamed for air. "You will be more careful from now on. Understand?"

Now I could have agreed to abate this situation, but I ain't gonna lie. "Yeahhhh... nooooo." She seemed unamused. "I understand the frustration, but a few words in anger aren't enough to convince me. I'll try to keep control, but I ain't making a promise I can't keep." I say with a struggle to get them out from the, barely able to be drunk into my lungs, air.

She kept us like that for a bit and then loosened her grip and buried it into my chest. I could feel the moisture hit my shirt and I could tell she was crying slightly. "... I'll take it." I inwardly sighed at the situation, but returned the hug. "Just don't scare me like that again... please."

I smiled and looked down at her. She eventually looked up and I shrugged and waved my hand noncommittally. "Yeah, yeah, I won't do it again and all that. Not really the guy for all this sappy stuff, but I'll make the attempt." I looked at her with a playful smile.

She sighed and then smacked my arm. "Dick."

"Ohhhh... haven't heard you speak like that yet." I say and then move us to the couch and sit down. "All jokes aside though... how are you?"

This causes her to raise a brow. "Oddly personal for you, but I am more than fine now that you are awake." She says with a smile and lays her head on my chest. "Why?"

"Well..." The memories of my encounter with System was brought back to my mind and I felt the regret that filled me while I was under the deception it forced onto me. I sighed shakily and she looked at me with mild concern. "I just think that, maybe I should start to heal mentally. You know before I fall too far and never come back." She nods along as she is now facing me with an intent expression. I have all her attention. "I just... I'm broken, more broken than I have ever been after last night. While I was out, and in my head, I realized a change needs to happen. I remember the black flames, I remember the rage I felt at Freed's words, I remember the... rampage. My bad on that one."

She casually waved it off. "We handled it, but my sister is going to be here later to take you to see Ajuka Beelzebub."

"The fuck?" I say and she narrows her eyes at me. "Why is she taking me to him?"

"She wants to see if you really are human, or to see if you have an upper limit that should be present for your race. Humans are mostly weak and there is a few exceptions, but in the grand mass, you are all weak until you are reincarnated or ascend yourselves." Her words weren't wrong, but I couldn't help how my face became pensive at her words. She then gave a small smile. "Without all the scars and piercings you sure look good when you're annoyed, Luca."

"Ha ha... now who gave you a funny bone?" She looked slightly offended at that. "What? You are one of the most serious people I have ever met. Can't blame me for thinking you are incapable of humor. Thank you for proving me wron- Ow!" I looked to see she was pinching my arm, damn pain receptors. It doesn't even hurt too bad, it just feels new since I lost all that feeling for so long.

"Anyway I know I am human, but whatever, I'll deal with it." Sona nodded to my words and I got back on the topic. "Back on to what I was talking about. I am not trying to end up dead before I finish what I started, and if I don't do a little healing, mentally, then I can see myself going off the deep end. You don't deserve that, but that is the scenario we got. When I hear Valper's name I go feral, and when someone insults all the names of the people I went through that torture with, well..." I snap my finger and see a black flame appear. The pain feels less than it did when I woke up, but it is uncomfortable. "It's an upgrade, but came with more risk than it was worth."

As I finished Sona nodded and she began to think long and hard on the possible solutions. She eventually looks up and her eyes lock on mine. before she started she then pointed at my eyes. "Luca? Your eyes look like a solar eclipse." She points out and sure enough I see it in the reflection of the window. My eyes look like the a black shadow with a metallic cyan glowing around it. I turn off the black flame and they go back to normal and shrug.

"Pretty neat I guess, but not important." I say as I return my gaze to Sona.

"Right... well to answer your unasked question, I don't know what else I can do other than be there and listen. I can look for therapists in the area, or Devil health professionals, but I wouldn't expect anything immediate." I nodded to her words and she continued. "I do think I can at least start the process a bit faster." I gave her a confused look and she then stood up and walked to the window, opening it fully. I could see that there was a few students walking around when I walked over to it with her. She then pointed to the gate and I saw Kiba talking to a few of the fangirls he has... poor guy. "One of your friends survived the project you were in..." Her words made my heart stop and I was about to snap at her, but she continued. "Kiba is Isaiah. He knows you're the Luca from his past."

"No way."

I thought back to all the times I was playing with Isaiah and all the things we used to do before the project. All the times we would sneak out and explore the forest near the orphanage and when we found that spot to fish. All the things we did.

I fast forwarded to the moment we were taken to the facility and then the final day when we were all bandaged and messed up, but still ready to go for God's call. The thoughts went on and on until I was looking at Kiba and I saw a small Isaiah next to him and... the look was uncanny. I just... I broke down. I am not ashamed to say that I was crying right there as it all clicked and went to open the window, but Sona stopped me. I looked at her with a pleading face and eventually she let go. "I won't stop you, but just use the door please." I looked at her and then ran for the door. I never ran so fast in my life and I felt like I was flying halfway through. A few people made way for me and I had to dodge and jump over a few to avoid being stopped.

The people I passed were all confused and eventually I saw Akeno and Rias, and they looked like they were gonna stop me, but I hopped over them and kept going. I didn't bother looking back and just ran harder than I was already, my heart was thumping in my chest, but I didn't care. My greatest friend who I thought died was just outside and a piece of me was clicking back into place with every stride. My brother was outside and I just had to navigate an obstacle course to get to him.

Eventually I made it to the doors and I burst them open, the noise of slamming doors attracted a lot of attention, and I could see Isaiah look over to me. First it was confusion at the door opening, but then his look turned to shock and relief. He ended up dropping his books and I made a beeline towards him with a speed walked to him as he came towards me. The look of relief on his face and the smile he always flashed me when we were little was present on his face.

"Kiba-san?"

"What happened Kiba?"

"Ohhhhh look at the hottie he is going towards."

"That's Sona's boyfriend! The Yakuza Prince and The Prince of Kuoh aren't having an affair are they?!" That one caused lots of squeals and jeers, but I couldn't be bothered. My brother was right there.

"Isaiah!/Luca!" Those were the only things we were able to get out before we just hugged each other like the other would slip away. I felt tears come down my face and felt some on my shoulder. This, undoubtedly caused a scene, but we both didn't care. Two best friends were finally reunited and I was riding the euphoric high of having someone I cherished and lost back in my life. "I thought you were dead, Isaiah." It was like my own sibling dying and me finding them again after years of depression... it felt great. I felt great. I felt happy, but most of all, I felt a sense of peace come over me, like I get when around Sona, I'm not alone in this.

Sona gave Isaiah a day off of school to just catch up with me. "... and so after I woke up from the facility and saw that Valper was planning this all along for us, I began my hunt for him. He was excommunicated from the Church with a slap on the wrist and I felt it was way too light of a sentence for destroying so many lives." We were discussing the project and why I was after Valper.

"But the sword, Excalibur, is the reason those experiments in the first place. You should be hunting the pieces of Excalibur and destroying the damned sword to let our friends rest in peace." He responded to me and I was honestly taken aback at his hatred for the sword and not the man. What was worse is that he was serious.

"Isaiah... Excalibur is just a sword, a tool. You can't blame a tool for killing everyone we loved, man!" My response wasn't what he expected, but I pressed on. "It is just a sword. Valper is the real monster here! It was his choice to kill us all for his experiments! He could have let us go back to the orphanage, but didn't wanna deal with the damn PAPERWORK! It's his fault we were in the situation, not the sword!"

He got up to protest and then I stood up as well and we butted heads. I then looked for a weapon and remembered that he can make swords with his sacred gear. "Make a sword." Now that gave him pause.

"What? I am not crossing swords with you, Luca! We just officially reunited, I won't har-"

I cut him off. "Just make a damn sword and put it on the table! Jesus-" He flinched and I stopped. "Sorry, forgot. Just make a sword and put it on the table." He was skeptical and then he eventually conceded. A normal short sword then appeared on the table. I then looked at it and then sat Isaiah next to me. "Alright sword, kill." Isaiah then looked confused at my actions, but I didn't stop. "Go on sword, don't be shy. Kill." My arms were crossed the whole time and I stared at the blade. "See it can't, because it is just a tool. It is incapable of killing anyone until we pick it up ourselves."

He looked mad at me for making the damn smartass point, I would be too, but I ain't changing the approach. "It doesn't matter because if Excalibur didn't exist then we wouldn't have gone through that." He said as I sensed his values shaking, but he was steadfast in his beliefs.

"DUDE! There's more than one Holy Sword out there! Arondight, Caliburn, Clarent, etc. Hell there's more than just Arthur's swords, too!" I began to list many swords with my fingers, adding another one as I said a name. "Almace and Durandal, France Holy swords, Kusanagi and Muramasa, Japanese holy swords, Tizona and Colada, Spanish Holy Swords. The list goes on, Isaiah. They would have done the same thing with any of those swords!" I finish and I can see his resolve crack a bit.

After a bit of thinking he then sighs and concedes. "I still believe in the destruction of Excalibur for our friends, but I still see your point. I need time to think about that. I will still help you kill Valper, but if I feel as though it is not enough, then I want you to help me destroy Excalibur." He says resolutely.

"I appreciate that Isaiah, but I don't think we can do that." He looks at me as though he is betrayed, but I hold a hand up. "I am a crazy bastard and I know I am strong, but I am not dumb enough to make an enemy of the entire church. Back then I was, but I understand the need to be covert at times. If we destroyed the Excalibur blades, then the Church would blame the Fallen and Devils, then we have a whole new holy war on our hands. I rather not have the second great war in my lifetime, you know?"

I looked up to see him and he was frustrated when I painted the consequences for him and he nodded in submission to my point. "At least we can get our hands on Valper and that will be enough. He is an excommunicated bishop that ran all of the project and pulled the trigger on all of us. That makes him the one we can hold to the top of accountability and kill him to avenge everyone." I say as I put a hand on his shoulder. He sighs once more and then nods again and looks at me.

He then clasped my shoulder and then smiled. "Alright." I smiled in return and he continued. "I'm with you Luca. For the fallen." He then stopped and then shook his head. "For our family."

I couldn't help, but snort at his quick change in the way he said that. "For our family. Not the Fallen?" I say with sarcasm at the end.

He punched my arm. "Shut up, Luca." I laughed harder at this and he smirked as he began to turn to head for the door to the campus for lunch. "Asshole."

I followed after him and put my arm on his shoulder as we walked out. "You always did say the nicest things, Isaiah." I said with a wide grin and he snorted in response.

I then saw a notification appear in front of my face.

Mind Heath Progress 34/100. Keep up the work Luca. Form connections, relax, find yourself, and soon you can be level headed again.

I dismissed it and then acted as though nothing happened. It felt good though, like a weight was slowly lifted a bit. It is still there, but it isn't as hard as it was. Doesn't matter I am gonna enjoy all the time I got before Serafall comes to get me.

It didn't last long, until Serafall came to get me. Isaiah had to stay back at the Occult Research club, but I knew he would be there when I got back. Serafall was giving me a curious look and when I noticed it, plenty of times, she would change to a pout and wail about how I shouldn't be mad at Sera-Tan, or something. I was angry at being pulled away from my friend, but I can't really fight back against her. Attacking a Leader of a Faction, unprovoked and out of annoyance, won't do me any favors. Plus I don't need a spinal alignment from Sona. Sure I can just use Phantasmal Form, but I don't need an annoying scolding to follow.

Eventually though we made it to a laboratory door and my discomfort at this must have been showing since Serafall glomped me. "Ohhhhh don't worry Lu-Tan! Big Sis Sera-tan will make sure the nasty needles stay away from you!" She then began to rub my cheek with hers affectionately and I rolled my eyes.

"Not scared of needles, just remembering the project. The door brings back memories of the Facility, it'll pass." I say with a bored tone. "Let's get this over with already." I sighed as I walked to the door and Serafall hopped down and skipped after me to the door. I opened it and was greeted with a quaint little office and an examination chair.

In the center of the room was a tall man, who was undoubtedly attractive, his hair was green and his eyes blue. I stopped evaluating him right there and then spoke my thoughts out loud. "More blue..." This caught Serafall's attention and the green haired Devil cocked his head. I just facepalmed as I stood there. "Why the hell does everyone I meet have some sort of blue going on with them? My flames are blue, my eyes are blue, the fallen had blue light weapons, now a Satan has blue eyes too?! There are other colors, universe. What the fuck." I say defeated and make my way towards him. Behind me I hear Serafall cackling at the ridiculous first impression I just made and in front of me Ajuka seemed amused at the words I spoke.

"It is a curious thing, that you encounter blue so much. I hope you have some diversity in your color spectrum soon." He said in a far too amused tone, but then went to being more serious. "My name is Ajuka Beelzebub, and you must be Luca?" He holds a hand out to shake and I reach out and shake his. He looks down at my hand and smiles, but it seems to be out of intrigue. "Hmmm... firm grip. For a human. Not to say there's anything wrong with that, but it is interesting to see someone so calm here. Most of the Devils would be nervous in my presence, but a human I thought would be worse. My expectations have been gladly disproven."

I nod and Serafall comes up behind me. "Being nervous isn't really something I do. I stopped all the nervous crap when I was younger, got in the way. Took time to train out the signs, but it eventually worked. Names Luca." I say and give a small smile to him. The handshake ends and he motions me to the examination chair.

"I can't argue with you on that being a good thing. To show weakness would make you have less sway. Thank you for bringing Luca here Serafall." She pouts at the use of her full name and he sighs. "Sera-tan." She then smiles and hops in a chair nearby.

"No problem! I can't wait for you to take a look at my dear Lu-tan Ajuka! I can't have him being sick now can I?" She says as though she were an optimistic airhead.

"You're a Satan?" I ask with a deadpan and she fiegns pain at my question, which causes Ajuka to chuckle. "I'll respect your strength Sera-tan, but I am in doubt of your maturity." I say as I look at Ajuka who is attaching rubber circles to my body. "What's all this?"

"Oh these are suction cups. They adhere negative fluid pressure of air or water to stick to nonpourous surfaces and..." He sees I am not giving him a deadpan stare. "Basically these are going to stick to you and I will use them to hold small scanners on you. Then we will scan you to check for abnormalities and measure your capabilities. It's like a physical, but supernatural." I nodded and when he finished sticking them to me and his explanation was over we made a little small talk as he loaded up a computer set next to me. We mainly talked on hobbies, with Serafall joining in occassionally. Turns out Ajuka is an inventer and he enjoys his hobby immensely. Guy created the Evil Piece System and he calls inventing a hobby so I expect nothing less from him.

"Okay and now we will be getting a scan of you shortly." He says and me and Serafall nod at that. His screens begin to show a lot of information and he is reading through it REALLY fast. He stops though and begins to ponder for a moment. "Well you are indeed human."

"Oh shit I never knew." I say with heavy sarcasm and Serafall just gives me a wry grin at my antics. I can tell something is bugging her though. Ajuka didn't seem to notice as he kept looking at the screens.

"Well that is interesting..." He then pulls up an image that seems to be moving on the screen. It is a circle that is spinning, and it looks like a small star that you would see in space. Coming out of the side is a multicolored light that dances across the color spectrum. Serafall looks curious and, I admit, I am curious too. "Very interesting, indeed." Ajuka says and Serafall glomps onto him, much to Ajuka's annoyance.

"What is that?! It's so Pretty!" She practically squeals and I see Ajuka trying to shake her off, but to no avail.

He eventually gives up and just sighs, but returns back to looking at the screen. "That is a large ball of sealed magic. I haven't seen one this dense in awhile, especially in a human." He says as he looks at me skeptically, and I shrug. "Are you sure you have no supernatural parentage? You are fully human?" I nodded to that and he went back to pondering again. "This makes no sense then. This much magic potential in a normal human is unheard of. I heard what Lord Sitri said about you at the Morningstar, but to see it with my own eyes is nothing short of incredible." He then looked at me and then smiled. "Say, how about you join me as a peera-"

"Not interested..." I deadpan. He snapped his finger and then went back to being a scientist again.

"Oh well. I can at least tell you that you are a human, with an exceptionally high potential in magic. The seal looks like it is slowly breaking, and I can get a partial reading on it from that, but it seems that it is so small it isn't showing me anything. Strange." He then turns to me and asks. "Would you mind showing me your flames? I would like to see if they can spark a measurement from the leak."

"Blue or black?" I ask without thinking and Ajuka spun his chair around with a mad gleam in his eyes. Like I just told him the secret to immortality. Serafall gave me a small apologetic smile.

"Black flames you say?" He says as he rolls his chair over to me and I just lean back as he gets closer to me.

"Uhhh yeah. Amaterasu flames actually." This makes him get even closer as he looks at me like I am more of a specimen than a human being now. "Easy Ajuka, back up before I start melting things." I say as I light my hand with blue flames. He then looks towards the flames with interest. "Now what?!"

"I don't sense a change in magic output. How are you doing this? There was no formula that magicians need to use and there is no incantation. It is reminiscent of Devil's imagination magic." He then grabbed wrist and brought it closer to him so he can see the flames better. The heat was making him sweat slightly, but I didn't see him get bothered by it. "This seems to be naturally produced, but I have never seen a human do this before, nor heard of it."

He then dropped the wrist and made his way to a clipboard to write something. "And you said you have the flames of Amaterasu?" I nodded and just flicked them on. It hurt and it was making me grit my teeth the longer I kept it up, but then I noticed a level up for Pain Tolerance and then it became much more bearable as it was now level 8.

Ajuka began to inspect the flames and he then grabbed something from the corner of the room. It looked like a red stone and he tossed it into the flames and as it touched it, it began to disintegrate it. This made his eyes bug out of his head. "INCREDIBLE!" He shouted and I swear I need ear surgery now. He then turned to me and I saw Serafall start at the sudden change in his mood. "You must be my test subject!"

"Wha- The fuck?! NO!" I yelled as I turned off the flames and went to get up, only for him to hold me down. I kicked him, but it didn't do much. "Get the fuck off me!"

"You misunderstand what I mean! Do you even know what you are doing?!" He shouts and I can see Serafall is getting concerned. "You indeed have the flames of Amaterasu!" He yells as he holds me down still, but I begin to wriggle free. "Yet you use no magic to call and command them!"

This makes Serafall stop and stare. "Excuse me?!" She exclaimed.

Ajuka finally let's me go and I get up and put a little distance between us, while the, now, freak makes his way to his computer. "I know it is hard to believe, but the calculations are not wrong! You don't use magic at all with this, and therefore it is as if you are willing the flames themselves to appear. If you are fully human, and not of the descent of any magical being, then it wouldn't make sense for you to have imagination magic. However this is not magic, you are literally invoking your own will upon reality with this! Everything about this goes against all known laws of the universe, so in essence, you shouldn't exist Luca." He says as he returns to looking at me. Serafall is now looking at me in wonder and honestly that glint in her eyes is making me slightly unnerved. "You are an anomaly and shouldn't be, yet you are. If you agreed to allow me to run weekly tests on you I could write a thesis! It is entirely possible you are a new entity, and just one test will not be enough to determine it."

He then stood up and then made his way to his desk, pulling out a pamphlet with a summoning circle on it. "I would like you to think about this and call me with this. Know that I will pay you for your time, and trust me when I say I can make you more wealthy than the richest humans on the planet, but nevertheless I would really appreciate your time." He then forced the paper into my hand and I was looking at it for a bit.

"I don't have a choice do I?" He shook his head and I snorted. "Figures... Oh well. I guess I can, but I am gonna be busy for awhile. Gonna have to raincheck this for awhile, Ajuka." I say as I move to stand next to Serafall.

"I understand, as long as you are cooperative, I don't care how long it will take, and if you died I would just reincarnate you as a Devil to do the tests." I can appreciate the casual honesty, but it is still not fun to hear that I can't avoid him after death. "All I can say is that the results show that Luca is Human, but is also more than that, from his strange abilities and sealed away magic. Your curiosity has hopefully been sated dear Sera-tan, and I have just awakened mine, it seems." Ajuka says as he returns his gaze to me... dude is nice, but damn is he creepy when it comes to science.

"Ohhhh don't worry Ajuka! I am just as curious now too though, and I hope Lu-Tan here will tell his Sera-tan all his secrets one day!" Internally I knew I was never going too. She turned to look at me and continued. "So, Lu-tan, ready to go back to the school?" She asked all too sweetly and... did she flutter her eyes at me?

"Why can't I have my scars and disgusting look? All this new attention is unwanted for right now." I thought to myself and then just nodded as she hung on my side and began to teleport us back to the school. "I am marrying your sister, doesn't that bother you?" I ask as she and I make it outside the Occult Research club.

Serafall laughed and then she pressed her breasts up against my chest and got close to me. "Awwww... this is why I like you Lu-tan! You care about my dear So-tan! Don't worry though, powerful individuals in the supernatural community have harems and since you are one of a kind, so far, you need to make babies in the future!" I rolled my eyes at that and she poked my nose with her finger. "Plus I need to be there to make sure you and So-tan don't hurt yourselves on the first night. It'll be a welcome to the family threesome!" Oh good lord. Serafall giggled and jumped back, before striking a pose and teleporting away. "BYE LU-TAN!"

I didn't even get to say bye to her as she did that and soon the door opened behind me. Isaiah was there and he asked. "Back? Good, how was the checkup?"

"Apparently I shouldn't exist." I say with a bored tone and turning around I see Isaiah looked confused. "Yeah that was about my face as well. Don't let it bother you too much. What did I miss?"

He is silent for a moment and then gets serious. "Well apparently a Fallen Angel is trying to get into contact with Sona. I don't know what she wants, but Sona has agreed to a meeting with them." He says and I am honestly surprised at this turn of events.

"Really?" I ask to which Isaiah nods. I put a hand to my chin and think for a bit. "Maybe the ruse worked. They didn't seem smart from when I met them, and I met plenty of Fallen. Get pass the lordship over those beneath them and they can be alright, I guess. Does Serafall know about it?" I ask.

"I am unsure on that. I do know Sona has asked for you to stay out of the meeting, to keep appearances that you are not with them. Buchou wanted to be apart of it as well, and I think she is allowed since they run the territory together. The rest of us are not gonna be there." He says and we begin to head out of the old School building.

"Well I may just tell Serafall anyway. I wanna make sure shit goes off without a hitch, and they may give in better if the Leviathan is there." I say as I pull out my phone to text Serafall. When I send the message I see her look at it, but doesn't respond. Must be busy or something. I looked back to Isaiah. "Sooooo you can make any sword you want?" I ask to confirm something.

"That is correct." He says and then he gets a bit creeped out by my growing grin. "Why, Luca."

I turn and put a hand on his shoulders. "We are gonna make some combo moves, Isaiah." I say and my grin widens further.

He takes a bit, but eventually Isaiah smiles as well. "Well then let's get started. What did you have in mind?" He asks and I begin to head with him to the forests surrounding Kuoh so we can make some combo moves with his swords.
