Growing up in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, was... well, she didn't really know any different. She had nothing to compare it to really. It had been home to her since as long as she could remember.

Well, from about the age of three or four.

It was strange though. She never really fitted into the southern way of life.

She didn't want to follow rules or expectations. She didn't want to have to be 'kind' and 'considerate'. she also certainly did not want to give respect to those that did not deserve it.

She supposed, in a way, that southern hospitality malarkey was actually just shrouded in lies and fake smiles because there was absolutely no way people could be that nice.

Like, seriously, look at its past.

Despite that, she grew to love the music, the food and the outdoors. She became accustomed to the way of life, even if it wasn't up to the locals standards. Hell, she even got a little bit of an accent.

Her dad, a sharp but kind business man, worked all over the state. Sometimes he was away for a few days, other times a few weeks. She didn't know exactly what it was he did - he seemed to dabble in a bit of everything, but what she did know was he made money. A lot of it.

Her mom on the other hand, not so nice.

Well... it wasn't that she wasn't nice per se, just more rigid and stern than her dad. Kayla always felt a little out of place around her mom, like they weren't operating on the same frequency, but she had long since gotten used to it. Her mom, for whatever reason, definitely wasn't as affectionate or tolerable to her as she was to her older brother, Dylan, but Kayla just assumed that was because he was the oldest; ergo, the favourite. She knew she wasn't planned. She had been born only fourteen months after her brother, which is where she thought the resentment came from.

Which lead her, conveniently, to her brother Dylan. He was outgoing, loud and incredibly confident. A bit of a kiss ass at times, but loveable none the less. An easy going nature that attracted people to him in crowds. A star of football and the basketball team, because one sport clearly wasn't enough right?

Hence, the kiss ass.

But she loved him none the less. Hell, she even sort of loved her dysfunctional little family, even if it wasn't the 'Stepfords'.

Well... the Stepfords weren't werewolves.

Not that she was one. She wasn't 'blessed' with that gene, for whatever reason, despite the fact her dad and brother were.

She had always joked about getting a paternity test but, for whatever reason, that joke never went down well with either of her parents. Even though she was just joking. She was too much alike the Hale's to be anything else.

Her dad, John, was the younger brother of Talia Hale. An Alpha of the most respected among their kind. A sort of monarch among the werewolves. That was, until she, along with ten other members of their family, burned to death in a house fire.

And no, not because of faulty electronics, but arson.

Murder.

She didn't remember the events surrounding that time much. Her family said it was because she 'shut herself off' but maybe it was for the best. Who wanted to remember a time that agonising?

Almost an entire bloodline, several generations, wiped out. Children included.

The only remaining relatives alive and well were her cousins, Derek and Laura. Luckily, they had been at a school lacrosse match that night otherwise she was sure they would have burned to death too.

However, there had been one survivor.

Her uncle Peter.

The youngest of the three Hales, the only without a family of his own.

He had somehow escaped the basement that the others had perished in, but that had left him basically comatose for the last five years, nearly 70% of his body covered in burns.

The damage so severe, it was something even a werewolf couldn't heal from.

Since that tragic night, her dad had been on hyper alert ever since. He was guarded and wary, always taking steps to protect and conceal their identity. Honestly, she was surprised he hadn't made them move several times over and change their last name, as the name 'Hale' was well known in the supernatural and hunter community alike.

She supposed, sort of like royalty. Their bloodline was, not only one of the purest, but one of the oldest too, which - naturally - made them either respected, or hated and hunted.

So far though, they had lived in peace for the most part. A few blips here and there, young and inexperienced hunters trying their hand, but failing. One thing her dad was really good at was protecting his family.

Unbeknownst to her, this morning of the 17th of November 2009 was different to any other day, even though it started relatively the same.

She got up, showered, put on her make up, dried her hair and curled it, throwing on some shorts and a jumper before heading down for breakfast, despite the fact she was running late.

She was always running late.

Time management wasn't her strong suit.

She took the stairs two at a time, making her way through to the large kitchen and dining area, seeing the spread her mom had already laid out, everything from toast and waffles to fresh honey pots and freshly squeezed orange juice, enough to feed an army.

Well, two hungry werewolves, but they could eat just as much as one.

Her mom didn't even turn to look at her as she dragged her feet into the kitchen, heading to the kitchen island and grabbing a couple slices of toast, spreading some chocolate sauce on top and loading it up with freshly cut banana slices, taking a large bite from the corner so chocolate sauce dropped down her chin.

Her dad, dressed in a neat suit, glanced up from the bar stool and above the paper he was reading, pointing to her chin with a smirk as, in the background, her mom left the room to tend to the laundry that had just finished in the dryer.

She rolled her eyes but smiled, using her thumb to swipe the sauce from her chin and lick it from her fingers.

"You were back before curfew last night?" her dad asked, a playful edge to his voice as he tried to hide his smirk, like he already knew the answer to that question.

"What? Of course" she said, playing it cool with a shrug, "I beat it by three minutes actually"

"Uh huh" He muttered, not falling for her lies, "Kayla, sweetheart, I can hear your heartbeat and although you're getting better at controlling it you haven't mastered that art yet"

"Damn" She muttered under her breath, chewing noisily before swallowing the heap of food in her mouth, "Okay, fine, but if it's any consolation it was a total emergency – like full blown, flashing lights emergency"

Her dad just chuckled lightly, putting the newspaper down and reaching for his mug of coffee, taking a small sip, "Oh, really? Did this 'emergency' happen to involve a horror movie marathon accompanied by copious amounts of junk food?"

"You're good" Kayla told him, leaning back against the counter top, pointing a finger in his general direction, "Not great, but good – first of all it was a crime movie marathon because studying the worst serial killers in American history? Count me in, and second, it's not classed as 'junk food' if it contains fruit and, newsflash, 'fruit salad candy' must otherwise that name is incredibly misleading" she pointed out with a smirk, unable to keep a straight face at the irony.

"Just don't blame me when you fall asleep during school then" Her dad smiled, "And don't let your mom know, you know how she gets"

"Yes, yes I do" Kayla agreed, throwing her head back as she chewed on the toast, "s'e thin's i'mma 'ex up 'll my m'le friends" She said through a mouthful of toast, sending her dad a playful look, "Whi' Imma not"

"Sorry kiddo, even my werewolf hearing couldn't pick up on what you said" he chuckled, folding up his paper, "mind repeating?"

"I said-" She started to say before closing her mouth and promptly swallowing, "- I said she thinks I'm going to sex up all my male friends, which I'm so not going to do. Her views are seriously out of date" she claimed before plastering a pretend, thoughtful look on her face, "Unless things get really boring in school because then I'd be totally up for it" she joked.

"Ha-ha" Her dad dead-panned, sending her a smirk – thank god they had almost the same sense of humour, "she just worries. You're our little girl. It's scary seeing you grow up so fast"

"Dad, I'm fifteen" she protested, "maybe she should be a little less concerned about my virginity, and more about her ability to parent"

The friction between her and her mom wasn't a secret. She was a daddy's girl through and through, but that wasn't because she was being a bitch, it was because, to her, it was obvious her very presence wasn't exactly welcome. She put it down to being an 'accident'.

Her mom was definitely not the most maternal and, quite frankly, should've stopped at one kid.

However, a little too late to use the coat hanger now.

Fifteen years to late, even.

Her dad frowned, keeping his voice hushed as he leaned towards her.

"Kayla... don't start this. Not today okay?"

"I'm not starting anything"

He cocked an eyebrow, remaining cool and calm despite her teenage anger, quick to rise.

"Your mom loves you"

She snorted, "could've fooled me"

She caught a strange look in his eyes, like a sad glint filled with guilt but as soon as she spotted it, it was gone just as quick, almost making her think she had imagined it.

"Just... don't give her a hard time today, okay?" he asked, "it's family movie night tonight and I want us to pretend we are just a normal family okay?"

She sighed, but being a daddy's girl she couldn't say no to his request.

"Fine. I'll be nice"

"That's my girl" he said, leaning forward to ruffle her hair affectionately as she batted his hand away but secretly enjoyed it - her dad, the one parent she actually had a good relationship with - was really a softie and she loved being treated like the perfect little daughter because, god knows, her mother never saw her like that. She always had something to say. Nothing was ever good enough.

Her B in Economics should've been an A.

Her A in Biology should've been an A plus.

Her actual A plus in maths was a cop out because 'anyone can do maths'.

Her friends were 'obnoxious and childish'.

She didn't approve of her outfit choices.

She certainly didn't approve of her very casual dating - and by dating she meant, second base at most.

Every aspect of her life her mom had something o disapprove of, so she had stopped trying for approval long ago.

She reached for the coffee pot, pouring herself a large mug and scooping in six heaped teaspoons of sugar into the dark liquid, keeping it black as she raised it to her lips, about to take a sip but Dylan, her older brother, skateboarded into the kitchen, grabbing her coffee cup before she could put it to her mouth and skidded to a stop next to the table, giving her a playful smirk.

"Thanks for the coffee sis" he grinned, giving her a thumbs up as he took a massive gulp.

"Hey" Kayla protested, her hands in the air, "Get your own you lazy ass"

It seemed karma had it our for him because he suddenly started coughing loudly, his face screwing up as he dumped the coffee on the table and stuck his tongue out, fanning his open mouth with his hand.

"Ah ah ah that's hot, hot, hot, hot, hot" he repeated over and over again and Kayla just chuckled, reaching up and flicking his forehead, "serves you right Dyl"

"Plus ew" he said, "how much sugar do you need anyway? It's coffee not an exorcism"

"Salt you idiot" Kayla jabbed, "Exorcisms require salt, not sugar – maybe you need some coffee in your system, reboot you, get those clogs working"

"Oh you think?" he smirked, suddenly grabbing her forward and wrapping her in a headlock, "why so much snark this early in the morning little sis?"

"I will kick your ass" she warned, trying not to chuckle, "I will kick your ass big time"

"Bring it" he told her egging her on as he rubbed his knuckles across the top of her head, "c'mon, let's see if your skinny ass can win"

"Kids" she heard her dad mutter, shaking his head and Kayla just thought 'gladly - challenge accepted' before raising her foot and kicking him in the back of the knee, causing him to falter and let go of her and she just laughed, dodging his hands as she picked up her coffee, giving him a sarcastic smile.

"Cheers Dyl" she told him cheerfully, raising her mug, "And the winner of the match is... wait for it... wait for it... wait for it..." she trailed off as Dylan just rolled his eyes, cocking an eyebrow at her, "the human – booyah, in your face"

"We will continue this after school" Dylan smiled just as their mom walked through, now changed and dressed up in a fancy black office skirt, high heels, her bobbed hair tied back in a pin.

"Continue what?" she asked curiously, clipping in her earrings, "and no fighting in the kitchen Kayla, what have I told you before?"

Of course, her fault yet again.

Dylan stuck his tongue out at her, playing up being the favourite as he smirked cockily because he never got in trouble.

"Don't worry mom, Kayla couldn't beat me anyway" Dylan smirked and she just threw him a playful glare, "with all her gymnastics I think she is more... cheerleader material than boxer"

He sent her a grin, showing that he was just teasing and Kayla just screwed her face up, holding up her hand.

"HA – that's funny... why would I want to wave pom poms around the place while shouting out the alphabet? Please Dyl... that's your level of schooling"

"Yeah..." he trailed off, "those cheerleaders can teach me the alphabet any day..."

He got this dreamy look on his face and Kayla just smacked his arm, rolling her eyes at her brothers typical guy response.

"Such a guy" she muttered, "try thinking with your upstairs brain, you might learn a few things"

"Now where's the fun in that?" Dylan grinned, nodding his head before glancing down at his watch, "ah... look at the time, gotta run... catch y'all later" he saluted them, placing a foot on the skateboard as he grabbed a couple muffins, stuffing them in his hoody pocket and picking up a waffle, "and I'll pick up that toffee chocolate popcorn for our movie night tonight"

"Make it a big bag" Kayla called out to him, "a really big bag Dylan... SUPER BIG OKAY?" she hollered to his retreating figure skating down the path before disappearing from sight.

"He better make it a big bag" she muttered, shaking her head as her dad just looked at her amused.

"Kayla-" her mom chirped, "-you better not miss the bus again – I'm late for work and don't have time to drive you in" she warned, staring at her sternly through her eyelashes.

"I'm not going to miss the bus" Kayla told her, trying to keep her attitude under control, "I'm getting a lift with Harry"

Her mom quirked a brow, a disapproving expression twisting her sharp features.

"Why?"

"Because his older cousin is taking him out driving. Relax, he has his learners permit"

"I don't think that's such a good idea"

"In case, what? He crashes and falls into my vagina?"

Her mom's mouth twisted into a thin line, clearly having no patience for her running her mouth.

"Enough"

"Whatever" she muttered under her breath, having gone off her breakfast and she put the last bit of toast down, her mom's attitude leaving a bitter taste in her mouth, "I hear his car. Gotta go"

She didn't spare her mom another glance, walking around the kitchen island to place a kiss to her dad's temple before grabbing her bag and leaving the house, not knowing this was the last morning they would ever spend together as a family.

A/N) eeeek I'm excited. This story is going to be unlike anyyy of the others I've written. You'll see Kayla in a whole new light. You'll see her as a broken and bitter young girl and her relationship with Aiden? Oh boyyyyy. I've only explored it in flashbacks and Kayla talking about it, but it's going to be insane. Hot, toxic, full on and dangerous. Lots of secrets going to be revealed - so I hope y'all stick around and watch it play out because it's going to be CRAZY. Haha so hope you all liked and please leave some reviews / see you all soon :)
