Government Questioning

Alec's POV

When I awoke the next day, it was by Ethan throwing me out of the bed and onto the floor unceremoniously with Psychic. "Morning Ethan," I grumbled tiredly and with a hint of annoyance.

[I'm hungry and want breakfast. Besides, we have that meeting today and it's eight in the morning,] Ethan told me.

"Yeah, yeah, give me a minute. Unlike you, I wanted to sleep in a bit more to not have as much dread for what's happening today," I muttered as I stood up and exited my room to the kitchen.

After making a quick breakfast, I went over what had so far been said about me, looking through the video of me and All Might fighting Nomu and the League. The video itself was almost 12 minutes long from the beginning of the USJ attack until the heroes showed up, though I felt personally that it was longer. I guess I could chalk that up to distorted feelings of time when under combat.

Most of the comments were a mixture of praising me for my actions and that of my Pokémon, though a clear favorite for them appeared to be Arco, based on the descriptions I was getting. Variations of bipedal canine that transformed sounds about right. And a series of debates that were in short; who did more during the fight. Some expressed worry that the League managed to escape, while a select few talked about me, questioning whether or not I turn on the heroes, though there were a fair amount of comments on those comments about how that wasn't likely.

"So, the general populace is still in favor of me, though some are understandably worried. I feel like the politicians I'll see today will mostly be in the latter category to the point of paranoia," I noted to myself as I ate.

[Yeah. Though are you sure about who we're bringing with us? I mean, it's a good team, but I feel as if you're trying to make a point,] Ethan asked.

"I'm sure, Ethan. Just consider yourselves a backup plan in case my original plan doesn't end up working out," I answered as I finished eating and went to take a shower.

"Just please be careful. Zzzt. This isn't like back home where you already had the respect of almost everyone in the room," Zip pointed out.

"I will, Zip. Just stay hidden for the meeting, alright," I said as I closed the door to the shower room.

When I got out, I noticed it was around 8:30, so I had some time before Midnight came to pick me up for the meeting. "Might as well get some training in," I noted, heading towards my Training Ground with Ethan and Zip following.

A few hours later

I spent most of the morning training my team and helping Cotton get her leg back. She was healing pretty well, and I estimated she should be able to walk unsupported again in a week, and with two she'll be back to her old self, only leaving at 11 for some lunch for myself and my Pokémon and getting into my suit. Around noon, I headed back to the training grounds. "Alright, I'll be leaving soon, but I want you all to stay here until I return unless something happens that forces you all to leave. If that happens, stay away from populated areas and wait for me to find you. Got it?" I told my Pokémon, those staying nodding in understanding.

[My hero, are you absolutely sure about this?] Royal asked.

"I know you hate corrupt governments, but the rules are different here. We can't just go blasting everything we don't like without consequence," I told her, petting her snout.

[Alright. I'll trust you, but I don't have to like them,] Royal responded.

I then returned the other five Pokémon I would be bringing to their balls and attached them to my belt, visible, but in a position where I could easily grab them.

Though I did have to say, Best Jeanist did a good job with my suit. It was a standard black suit and pants, but with dark blue highlights and tie, and black dress shoes. Nothing too different from what I usually wore to formal events, either something for my father's company or someone who wanted to invite the World Champion to some big fancy event and my PR manager signed me up to go when I wasn't bailing on her to do my own thing. Stepping out, I could see Midnight approaching with a man I didn't recognize.

Midnight was wearing what appeared to be a standard business suit and long skirt, which was a bit of a far cry from her borderline indecent hero outfit. The man meanwhile looked like he was a lawyer of some kind. Either way, I wasn't sure whether or not to like him.

"You ready to go Alec?" Midnight asked.

"Yeah, I'm all good. Who's this?" I asked, looking at the other man.

"Namaji Karachi. I'm a political lawyer assigned to you today," the man answered.

"Why would I need a lawyer? I'm perfectly capable of speaking for myself," I questioned, slightly annoyed by what the man's presence meant.

"That may be true, but I have experience with being an intermediary between UA and the government, so Principal Nezu felt my presence was required. All I ask is that you leave most of the answering of questions to me or Midnight, but if you wish to answer I would appreciate being at least signaled," Karachi answered.

I let out a sigh. "Alright. Just know that any questions that attack me directly I'll definitely be answering," I told him.

"Understood," Karachi replied.

The four of us then got in a small limousine and it started driving towards the meeting location, with enough room for me, Midnight, Karachi to sit in the back while I was also serving as a lap for Ethan.

"You're bringing your Pokémon with you?" Karachi asked, likely noticing the Poké Balls on my belt, and if he somehow missed seeing Ethan, he needed help.

"I don't go anywhere without at least a full team. Besides, your government is going to have to get used to the idea of seeing Pokémon since we don't exactly know when I'll be leaving," I noted.

The lawyer looked thoughtful at that, then gave a small shrug. "Alright. I suppose they can come, but try to keep them from messing around," he said.

"They won't. Ethan's the only one I'll keep out and even then, he knows how serious this is and will stay close to me. Right, buddy?" I replied, directing the question at Ethan.

[Yep. Not in the mood for wandering anyway,] he answered.

It took about 30 minutes until we arrived at the building, and immediately I was annoyed. Not by the building, though it was a bit too grand for my tastes and was a factor, but by the paparazzi outside, gated off to the sides from the main entrance with security guards providing a further barrier.

"Why am I not surprised this meeting was leaked to the public? Can't get anything private, can we," I commented sarcastically.

"We can just ignore them. We're on a timetable as it is," Karachi told me as he opened the door next to him and stepped out, Midnight gesturing for me to go next before exiting. As I stepped out, cameras immediately started flashing and a whole bunch of questions were asked, but everyone was speaking at once that it was just one giant mess of words.

Karachi took the front, walking a bit in front of me while Ethan walked by my side and Midnight was a bit behind me. I kept my expression neutral and calm as I walked, not wanting to seem aggressive or confident. "Don't give the Mandibuzz any fresh meat to use if you can help it", to quote my dad.

After what felt like an hour, but in reality, was probably only a minute, we stepped inside as the doors closed behind us, lowering the volume of the crowd outside. Ethan let out a huff of annoyance. [I hate the paparazzi. If I could get away with giving them a good Dark Pulse, I would,] he growled.

"I hear you, Ethan," I muttered in agreement.

"We have a few minutes before we have to be in for the meeting, but just so you know, apparently it's being live-streamed across the internet," Karachi told me.

"Well, that's not suspicious at all," I commented dryly.

"Why do I get the feeling that we'll be on the defensive most of the time?" Midnight asked.

"Because there's a good chance that we will be. From what I've been able to gather from my contacts in the government, most are heavily suspicious of Alec. The only reason they haven't ordered him or his Pokémon to be locked up is because of the public support and a lack of evidence to do so," Karachi answered.

"So this isn't a hearing, this is a… what's the phrase people in this dimension have? Witch Hunt?" I asked for clarification.

"While I wouldn't put it like that, it's pretty close to the truth," Karachi sighed.

I was about to respond when we noticed a man approaching us. "Mr. Kirkland, the committee is ready for you and your entourage," he told us.

"Best not keep them waiting," I said with a hint of tiredness to mask my worry.

Following the man, we stepped into a room and I could see news crews set up around the edge of the room, all pointing cameras towards me as I entered. A few armed guards were standing in front of the news crew, though I could tell they were here for me and to protect the politicians, I didn't let them phase me. I've handled armed opponents before and knew how to deal with them. The politicians were sitting on a raised podium on the opposite side of the room from the doors I entered through. There was then an opening between it and another sitting area with mics where I would be sitting, with other people sitting in the audience spots behind that.

Thankfully, the written language of my world and Japanese were pretty similar, so I easily found my seat, which was in between Midnight and Karachi, Ethan hopping up on the desk and sitting down on his back hunches, though I could tell from his body language that he was ready to jump up and defend me at a moment's notice. I could also tell that a few of the guards and politicians were giving Ethan suspicious looks, no doubt wondering why he was here and what I planned to do, but I ignored them.

Honestly, they didn't look all too different from the politicians I'm used to dealing with. Being World Champion gave me a lot of power, one that needed some political insight, though my standard tactic of casual intimidation mixed with respect might not work so well here. I'd have to play it carefully and just tell the truth. That's all they're going to get unless they provoke me to the point where action is the only way to get my point across, but that's why I brought the Pokémon I have.

The man that sat in a slightly higher position than the others had a name tag saying Tanki Kururugi, Prime Minister, on it. Interesting. So the leader of Japan was leading this meeting. Not entirely a bad thing, this means I'll be speaking right to the head of the political Arbok. No, I take that back, that's being cruel to Arbok. No Pokémon could ever be compared to the mess and a half that was politics. When the last people took their seats and 1:00 rolled up, the Prime Minister started the meeting.

He was a man that appeared to be in his late forties, with a single horn that stuck up a few inches from his forehead, light brown hair, and blue eyes, wearing what was probably the most expensive suit here.

"Welcome everyone. Today, we're going over the sudden appearance of one Alec Kirkland, who by all accounts does not exist, and has brought forth at least a dozen confirmed creatures of untold destructive capabilities. To start off with Mr. Kirkland, is there a reason you've brought one of your creatures into the meeting?" Kururugi asked, not even trying to hide the suspicious look he was giving towards Ethan.

"First of all, they're called Pokémon and I would appreciate them being identified as such. Second, it's the same reason you have all these armed guards here. I don't like to go somewhere defenseless," I stated plainly.

"You expect to attack us?" another politician who I didn't bother reading the name of, asked. Where he got that impression I have no idea.

"I've already been attacked unexpectedly twice in the past week I've been here. I don't want a third," I answered. In the corner of my eye, I could see Midnight getting a bit nervous, and Karachi sending me a warning look.

"Very well. Let's start with the proceedings," Kururugi said, and so the questions began.

Two Hours Later

"This is getting old," I thought to myself. After being asked the same questions of different variations for the past two hours now, Karachi and Midnight answered most of them to the best of their capabilities, this was proving to be the exact thing I was expecting. A witch hunt. They weren't trying to find out the reason I was here, they were more concerned about trying to get rid of me. And frankly, the feeling was starting to be mutual.

Going as far as to question my morals and make up things I could potentially do, most of which hadn't even entered my mind until they spoke about them. My personal favorite, and the one I had to try the most to suppress my laughter, was saying that I could mind-control them all. Honestly, that was the most tempting, but I didn't even have the Pokémon here to do that if I wanted to.

I had grown bored about an hour into the meeting, not even bothering to fake a smile, instead leaving a thinking scowl as the politicians did everything they could to demonize me in the eyes of the public, and Karachi and Midnight did nothing to change the situation, just kept it on repeat.

Plan A: Let the Lawyer handle it: Failed

Time for plan B: Slight intimidation with the truth and simple logic. Chance of success: slim, but not impossible. Now just to wait for the right kind of question.

"How do we know Mr. Kirkland doesn't intend to harm the public after gaining their trust? It's certainly not impossible," one of the politicians gave off another reworded question.

"Because you have nothing to stop me even if I wanted to," I said before Karachi or Midnight could, much to their surprise.

The politicians were, for once, speechless. A pleasant sound. "I apologize for Mr. Kirkland's words. It was uncalled for," Karachi said in slight warning, but I chose to ignore it.

And apparently, I wasn't the only one. "No, please. If Mr. Kirkland has something to say he should say it," Kururugi said, holding up a hand. "Now please, explain to us what you mean by that?" he asked. He kept his voice neutral, but I could see the faint hope in his eyes, probably thinking I was finally going to say something wrong and reveal my "evil plans".

Jokes on him.

"To put it simply, my Pokémon as a whole are too powerful for even All Might to defeat," I replied.

That just brought around a set of chuckles among the political body, but I kept my expression neutral, showing I wasn't joking. "You can't be serious. That Nomu the League of Villains brought took down several of your Pokéman like they were nothing," someone said, almost condescending.

"It's Pokémon, not man. As for Nomu, that thing was designed to fight All Might at his full strength for likely hours at a time and had an insane regeneration ability that is stronger than what's seen in the video of me beating it thanks to Serpent's Toxic I had her use at the beginning of the battle, and it fought my first six Pokémon in waves. If I had all twelve at the start, Nomu might have lasted five minutes at most, even with how much my Pokémon were holding back, and that's without All Might supporting me," I stated.

Some of the politicians paled at that, good look for them. "So, you're just biding your time to take over the world? Is that it?" one of the politicians spoke, getting control over their voice.

"If I wanted to take over the world, why are we still here talking? Why haven't you heard of me before the USJ Incident? Why is UA still standing? Why are all the students and staff still alive?" I questioned. That got them to shut up, and I could tell that they didn't know how to counter that without making a fool of themselves or destroying the narrative they were trying to create about me. The people behind me started whispering, asking questions themselves. Good.

I then continued. "When I first got here, I only had six Pokémon. Each of them could have taken out at least a dozen heroes before going down. But my Pokémon hold back because they aren't naturally killers. Even wild Pokémon don't aim to kill each other on a normal basis. The only reason that Nomu was an exception was because it was the only way I could think of to stop it before it harmed myself, my Pokémon, or worst case, any of the students. Now, I have over a dozen, and I would only need one to take over right now. But I don't, because I don't want to. I'm just a lost interdimensional traveler."

I could see the slight confusion on some of the politician's faces, and the audience behind where I was sitting continued muttering to themselves.

"I'll make this perfectly clear. My arrival here was a complete accident. And until I can return home, I'll be staying here. So, why don't we stop this farce of a hearing, and move on with our lives?" I suggested.

"This hearing is happening because you are dangerous and don't know your intentions!" one of the politicians shouted. I saw Ethan smirk at his shouting out of the corner of my eyes.

"Every person in this room is potentially dangerous. You're only concerned about me because you don't, and can't, control me like everyone else here. And I've made my intentions perfectly clear. To return home. Unfortunately, I don't have the capabilities to do just that, so for now, we're stuck with each other," I answered calmly, but with a slight hint of annoyance at how open-ended his statement was.

"You expect us to just sweep this whole incident under the rug?! You're an unknown!" the same politician shouted.

As much as I wanted to remark that that's what politicians do all the time, I reframed from that statement. It wouldn't get me anything.

"What I expect is to treat me like a guest to your world. And so far, UA's been more accommodating than this witch hunt I'm sitting at," I answered calmly, but with a hint of warning. Midnight paled and Karachi was trying to subtly signal me to stop talking, but I wasn't about to.

The politician then stood up and slammed a hand on his desk. "Witch Hunt?! This whole thing is to-"

"Mr. Neguchi, please calm yourself," Kururugi interrupted in warning, stopping the politician's shouting. Neguchi then sat back down, visibly flustered about his behavior. The prime minister then turned to me. "What is it exactly that you want, Mr. Kirkland?" he asked.

"The same thing that's been said, for the last twelve times. To return home. But, I am willing to offer you this; get off my back, and I'll pretend that this little witch hunt against me never happened," I told him.

"You must understand that we can't just let you walk around freely without any way of knowing or countering your capabilities," Kururugi stated calmly, but I could see the worry in his eyes.

Alright. Time for Plan C. I gave a quick glance towards Ethan, who gave me a slight nod.

"You wish to know my capabilities?" I questioned with an overexaggerated interest.

"Yes, that is the whole point of this hearing," Kururugi said, sounding a bit unsure. The politicians looked curious as to where I was going, as did Karachi and the audience/press. The guards tensed slightly, and Midnight looked worried.

I smirked in my mind. Well, it would be rude to refuse his invitation. "Alright. Perhaps a visual demonstration is in order," I said as I stood up.

"Alec, no-!" Midnight started but it was too late.

"Ethan!" I shouted as I threw all five of my remaining Poké Balls and unleashed Flare, Vanguard, Shark, Bulwark, and the massive form of Royal into the room, the latter of which almost filled up half the room, and Ethan used Psychic and pulled the guns from the guards.

All this happened in a split second, and the politicians and guards quickly panicked, while the rest of the audience seemed worried, but also was in slight awe of my Pokémon.

"Alec, what are you doing?" Midnight asked as she grabbed my arm as I walked past her to stand in the center of the room.

"They wish to know of my full capabilities, Nemuri, I'm giving them a demonstration of that power. Please, trust me on this," I answered, giving her a look that she seemed to get.

She let go, and I continued on to stand in the center of the room, right in front of Royal who was glaring down at the politicians in the room like they were the most disgusting thing she ever saw, and to her they most likely were, while Ethan walked up with me, the guns still controlled by Psychic. The rest of my team looked across the room, keeping any of the guards from charging in and attacking, not that I would expect them to, based on how they were all but crapping themselves.

"This is just a fraction of what I'm capable of, and I have no desire to use this power on the people of this world, only those who intended to do me, and those I care about, harm," I stated.

Kururugi managed to pull himself together. "This is what I've been meaning, you could destroy us all with your beasts. Creatures that only you can command, either they have to be secured, you agree to work directly with us, or we lock you up which is the preferred method!" he said, his voice filled with fear, then his eyes widened even further when he clued in what he just said. On live television too.

"And that right there is the difference between us," I said, still keeping my voice calm. Everyone was now looking at me, except my Pokémon. "You look at my Pokémon and only see a massive threat, and in a way, you are right," I started, then pointed at each of my Pokémon, starting with Ethan. "Umbreon are known to secrete a paralyzing sweat when attacking their prey, or when threatened by predators and humans." I then pointed towards Bulwark. "Aggron aggressively defend their territory to any and all intruders in the mountains they call their home, even from their own kind." Flare. "Volcarona's wings are said to burn as hot as the sun." Vanguard. "Aegislash can possess people and even drain their life force in some cases." Shark. "Garchomps are some of the most fiercest predators to walk my world, with those arm blades capable of cutting through steel with ease." And finally, Royal. "It's said that in ancient times, Reshiram burned half the Unova region when the kingdoms fell into corruption, carving out one of the two massive rivers there with her power."

I could tell that a few politicians were about to give some statement about what I said confirmed my Pokémon were dangerous, but I spoke up before they could.

"However," I started, stopping any statements in their tracks. "Umbreon are also known to aid lost travelers who get lost at night, guiding them with their glowing rings to towns or cities. The reason why Aggron attacks people who trespass on their home is because they pride themselves on maintaining it whenever it is damaged. Planting new trees and bringing up new soil after a forest fire or flood. Volcarona provided warmth to people when an ice age wreaked havoc in the Unova region and was considered a deity for centuries. Aegislash can sense the quality of leadership in a person and actively seek out those people. Garchomp's, despite their aggression, are also quite gentle to those that they trust and can be quite calm in the presence of people. Reshiram's main goal in life is to seek and show the truth, and will reveal herself to those who share a similar goal." I said all of this with a soft smile, my team showing a softer side to them as well when mentioned.

"What's the point in all this?!" Neguchi questioned.

"My point is this. My people once treated Pokémon like you treat Quirks. You fear the ones you can't control or the ones that you consider too dangerous. Operating under this illusion that your society has no flaws. Well let me tell you something, it does. I've had the opportunity to read up on your world, and frankly, some of the stuff I've read was outright disgusting. Anyone who has a "villainous" Quirk, your society forces them to think they could be nothing other than villains, which most of the time brings out a self-fulfilling prophecy. People who try to figure out the depths of their powers are ridiculed and arrested for "disturbing the peace" when they're just trying to figure out the limits of their power or worse, lose control of it. Your heroes operate like they're celebrities, looking for approval, fame, and money, more than trying to keep the world safe and improving your society. They do nothing unless someone's life is in danger. And don't even get me started about the treatment of those who are unlucky enough to be born Quirkless. In short, you only accept the bad of Quirks to keep up this image that you have some form of control over your superhero society. My people could have remained that way with Pokémon, but we didn't. A few of us asked one simple question, which brought countless others. What if? What if we tried to learn about Pokémon? What if we tried to live in peace with Pokémon? What if we sought companionship with Pokémon? A few asked those questions, and now we live in peace with Pokémon, accepting both the good and the bad about them, working together for the benefit of both. That is my point. You need to see past the flaws and lies of your society and open your eyes to the truth. That my Pokémon, like your Quirks, are a good, as well as a bad thing," I stated firmly.

The whole room was silent. Looking around, Midnight, the audience, and reporters seemed to be listening to my words, showing signs of interest, knowing acceptance, or disagreement. The guards were mostly impassive, likely not listening fully, but trying to figure out how they could contain me without making my Pokémon attack, though a few showed signs that they were getting what I was saying. The politicians were stunned, but then a few of them started laughing.

"That is completely ridiculous, boy," Neguchi said, saying "boy" like he was insulting me. "Our society is perfect with zero flaws. These "flaws" you're bringing up are nothing more than internet conspiracy," he stated in a tone that said he thought he had me, but before I could respond, someone I didn't expect did.

[You and those like you are blind fools who corrupt themselves to the truth,] Royal's voice suddenly rang out from the room, much to everyone's shock, except myself and the other Pokémon.

"Was that for everyone, Royal?" I asked her calmly, keeping my gaze on the politicians.

[Yes, my Hero of Truth. Even those watching can hear me,] she answered.

"You… you're capable of speaking?!" Kururugi asked in a mixture of awe, fear, and surprise.

[Yes. Though I don't use my telepathy often, I will say my own piece. And I will tell you this, if not for Alec, I would have burnt down this building with all of you politicians within it without mercy for the lies, greed, and corruption you spread to fill your own dens with gold but never using it for the betterment of your people. My only regret would have been all the innocent humans who would have perished as a result, dying blind to the truth hidden from them by their rulers,] she answered, giving a harsh glare at the Prime Minister.

"If I may ask then, why do you let him enslave you and make you fight against your own kind?" Kururugi asked, maybe trying to find a way to make me look bad through Royal, but I wasn't too sure, his eyes seemed to hold genuine curiosity. Not that I was too worried about that. If I was, Royal would have attacked me ages ago. Even with me being her trainer and a Speaker.

[While you might view this as a form of enslavement, working with a human is anything but. Over the many centuries I have lived, I have seen countless humans work alongside Pokémon. Pokémon provide protection to humans, who aren't as capable of defending themselves from us. While Humans allow Pokémon to reach heights we never knew possible. And while there are a few who would abuse this relationship, most people and Pokémon work together for a common goal. That is the truth, one that I see clearly,] Royal answered.

Kururugi and a couple of other politicians seemed to be thinking what had just been said, which was a good thing. Some started whispering a few things to each other while the Prime Minister seemed to be thinking hard, but most just glared or looked skeptically at Royal.

"Very well then," Kururugi said softly, though his voice rang across the room. "Ms. Midnight, UA has currently agreed to house Mr. Kirkland, correct?" he asked.

"Y-yes, sir," she said, caught a bit off guard, but quickly composed herself.

"Then it is my belief that Mr. Alec Kirkland shall be allowed to continue living there until he is capable of leaving. If something else comes up that forces that to change, then we will discuss it at that point. Mr. Kirkland, you're allowed to leave. But please give the security detail back their weapons," he asked.

I held up the four Ultra Balls and Master Ball and returned my other Pokémon. "Ethan," I said calmly. The guns floated back to the guards, who took their weapons back and put them away.

I then turned to leave, Midnight and Karachi quickly following along as the reporters and other audience members started trying to ask me questions, but the guards kept them off me as we moved to exit the room.

Once out of the room, I let out a sigh of relief. "Well, that went better than I expected," I commented, trying to reduce all the tension around me.

"You almost doomed yourself with that little stunt you just did," Karachi started. "What were you thinking, letting your Pokémon out and using them to threaten everyone?" he questioned in slight anger.

"In my defense, he did want to know what I was capable of. I simply provided a demonstration," I pointed out.

"Regardless, it may have been best if you had just let me handle it," Karachi said.

I shot the man a glare. "You were doing nothing but letting them run around in circles for hours, I took matters into my own hands and cut the loop. Now, if it's all the same to you, I'd like to go back to UA. I need some sleep after that," I said.

"Yes, I suppose we should leave. Thank you, Karachi. I'll handle things from here," Midnight said, placing a hand on my shoulder and guiding me towards the exit.

"I hope you fully realize what I had said also applies to you," I said calmly.

"I know it applies to some heroes, but I'm not sure how it applies to me," Midnight replied as she took her hand off my shoulder.

"You teach at one of the most prestigious hero schools in the country, yet you don't do much to tell the next generation of heroes the flaws of this society and how they can combat them, just help to show them how to use their Quirk to maintain the status quo. Even All Might is guilty of that in some regard. My hope is that you realize that you can still change things," I answered just before we stepped outside where the limo was waiting for us.

Reporters snapped their cameras once again at me and asked questions, but I ignored them as me, Ethan, and Midnight entered the limo and the driver headed back to UA. All the tension I had been feeling finally left as we drove away. For now at least, the government wasn't on my case, which was what I wanted. Now I just had to hope Nebby can escape from Necrozma and find his way here. Things seem to be going well. Now hopefully that will last for a bit.

And Alec has just shown everyone that he's not a person to be messed with. Boy was the meeting tense to write once Alec took control.
