Chapter 2: Dreams and Visions
The sun was hot overhead, glimmering off the golden wheat the swayed lightly in the breeze. She was wading through it, heading towards some unknown destination. It scratched her face and pulled at her dress as the chaff covered tops swung above her pointed ears. She was about to stop walking when she abruptly came to the end of the field.
The ochre field lay behind and before her was a field of rich green grass sloping away into a hill that overlooked the sea. Atop the hill, her back to the child, stood a figure silhouted against the afternoon sky. Hesitantly, the girl stepped forward, edging onto the green grass and moving up the gentle slope. The grass which seemed to glow with life, pressed back against her feet with each step she took. The magic around her seemed to deepen as she neared the figure.
As she came upon the figure, now distinctly a woman, ElemmÃrëornendil, or as her mother called her, Elemm realized the woman was pregnant. She looked at her belly and then her gaze slowly lifted to the woman's face. Her skin was browned from the sun and her hair was white- blonde but Ellem knew immediately who she was looking at.herself. The form was different, but the soul was still the same. Her future self gazed ahead over the water, where a mass of black clouds swirled and swelled. It was only then that Ellem saw the tears flowing down her future face and suddenly realized tears were streaming down her own as well. The darkness that loomed before had seemed to grow closer since she had begun looking at it only moments ago and Ellem felt the fear and loathing it exuded wrapping dark tendrils around her heart.
She could feel her pulse racing as she reached over to touch the vision of herself, but as if sensing her intention, the woman suddenly turned. She stared down at the child, her eyes boring into her own. It was her eyes that transfixed the girl, they were not like her own, the color of pale green glass but instead a translucent blue. Like star sapphires her eyes glowed with a hidden light as tears streamed down her face. The woman reached down and clutched the girl's shoulder, "How," she whispered, "how can we dispell such a darkness." With that she turned the girl toward the horizon over the cliff's edge, the sea roared far below and to the east, but it was the darkness.she could feel it calling to her on the breeze. With a jerk the woman pulled her back from the cliff's edge and she realized with horror she had taken several steps towards the edge. The woman's face was now level with her own as she locked eyes and said, "They who are lost must be found."
With a start the girl awoke, a scream caught in her throat, the haze of the dream still pressed in around her. She tumbled from her bed with a crash as she struggled to pull air into her lungs. Cool air rushed into her as she began to scream, the darkness and the woman that was her but not her all thundered through her mind, the fear and the hatred overwhelming her.
Amani awoke at the sound of the crash and in an instant she was in the room, clutching the hysterical child. The girl trembled violently as she wept, her body curled into a fetal position on the floor. "Child, child," Amani whispered soothingly, "please calm down, it was only a nightmare." At this the girl's trembling subsided somewhat and she said, "no ma, it was more than a dream," and with that she looked at Amani, meeting her eyes. Amani's face paled as she let a small gasp escape her mouth, "what has happened to your.eyes." Elemm touched her wet face, "what has happened to them" she whispered, though in truth she already knew. Amani touched the child's face hesitantly, amazed at her eyes which had changed from green to a cloudy pale blue.
Amani stared at the cup of tea before her as she listened to the sound of the two children playing in the yard. "Well Amani," said the Doctor as he watched his son and the elf-girl chase chickens around the coupe. "Yes," she said, looking up at him, "what do you think?" "Well, you know I am only a human healer but it seems to me that she is fine, I cannot account for this change in her eyes, but her vision seems fine. Perhaps it is normal for these people to undergo such a change." "No," Amani sighed, "she is special, it was the dream that did it.she has a special purpose, that much I am sure about." "How can you be so sure," he questioned; looking at her with a certain amount of pity, she had always been his friend and it saddened him to think of her as many people judged her to be.mad. "I know because before her mother came to me, I dreamt of a child with blonde hair and blue eyes who danced in the fields singing songs in a tongue I could not comprehend. While I thought at the time I was going to birth the girl, I see now that Elemm is the child, the promise of my dreams. For in her sleep.she sings those very songs, though no one has taught them to her."
