Today was the day. The day Kim dreaded yet was excited about. She laid awake thinking about the day ahead. Her mind spinning in circles. The only thing keeping her somewhat calm was Adams tight hold on her. It seemed to get tighter the more awake she became. She physically removed his arms so she could get up and use the bathroom. When she returned Adam had woken up. "Darling. Why are you awake?" He asked as he opened his arms for her to crawl back in. "I couldn't sleep. My head is spinning. I'm nervous, excited, fearful and more. I just can't stop thinking you know?" Kim was staring at the ceiling as she spoke.
"Kim it's going to be fine. It will all work out. I know you worried about going back to work but you are a bad ass cop! You got this. And the kids will be fine. Once they make a friend they will love school. I'm positive it will all work out. How about you try to get more sleep. You need it." Adam pulled her into his chest. "I can't sleep. I've been awake for hours now. But you go to sleep. You need it too." Kim kissed his chest and relaxed into his hold. "How about a workout and then maybe you will be able to sleep a bit?" Adam suggested as he rolled them over so he was hovering above her.
"Maybe just a little workout." Kim giggled as she kissed him soundly on his lips. Mid kiss she bit his lower lip tugging it gently. Adam groaned at the sensation. He removed her shirt quickly before attaching his lips on her neck. He bit lightly on her pulse point which caused her moan loudly and grab at the hairs on the back of his head. He wanted to suck on her pulse point but he knew he couldn't. A hickey was not work appropriate. He moved her collarbone leaving a trail of feather lite kisses that had her moaning softly.

"Well this has been an interesting early morning conversation. But to answer your question I was left to mechanical devices. And I keep it hidden in my closet. Sometimes I even used it while you were traveling. Especially when I was pregnant, my hormones would take over and be out of control and I just needed that release." Kim looked down to see Adam wide eyed but smirked madly. "Now that's something I would like to see." He winked at her before sitting up to kiss her passionately.
"I hate to break this up but I have to get ready for work. Want to join me for an actual shower?" Kim asked as she started to get up from Adams hold. "Yeah that sounds nice then we can get the kids ready together." He followed her into their bathroom. He got the water started as she brushed her teeth. He brushed his teeth after she finished and got into the shower together. Adam made sure that he spent time massaging her shoulders and massaging her head as he worked to wash her hair.
"Adam you don't need to baby me. I'm a big girl. I can wash myself." Kim complained. "Darling just take it. Let me take care of you it's a tough day. This makes me feel like I'm helping." Adam kissed her before she could comment back. She relented and allowed him free reign to baby her. Truth was she was enjoying it. But she didn't want to stroke his ego any more than this morning already had. After their joint shower they both got dressed and then worked to get the kids lunches prepared and then get started on breakfast for the kids.
Lily was being fed by Adam as he rocked her gently. This was just a part of his new schedule. It was going to be different being a stay at home dad with a newborn but he was excited to pitch in to get it all done. He had been a stay at home dad before but it was just with Jackson who stayed with Nadia during the day so it wasn't as hard. Between Lily's schedule and all the house work it should be interesting. He couldn't imagine how single parents get it done everyday. His parents always had partners that helped get things done so they never truly had to do it alone. This should be interesting for sure.
Once lunch was finished they headed upstairs to wake the kids and get them dressed for the day. Luckily the school didn't have uniforms so the kids could choose their favorite items to wear. At least that would mean they were comfortable in something before going into an unfamiliar setting. Adam woke Emma and Kim woke Jackson. They worked to dress them and then brought them down to get breakfast. "Are you guys ready for today?" Adam asks as she sets their breakfast in front of them. They both had mixed emotions just like Kim.
"Okay guys it's time to go. We will drop you both off and then I have to head to work but daddy with be home all day if you need him." Kim wanted to make sure they were comfortable as they walked through the doors. The kids slowly walked towards the garage as Kim grabbed her badge and gun for the first time in 6 weeks. It felt foreign in her hands but she knew it would subside the more it was at her side again. They got in car except for Kim would took a separate car so she could leave right from the school for work. They drove in silence the nerves could be felt in the air. It was stifling and he only hoped the kids were relax when they got to the school.
As they arrived at the school they all got out of the vehicles and started to walk towards the school. Kim carried Lily and Adam carried Emma who was shaking in his arms. Jackson choose to walk into the school. They visited his classroom first as he was less nervous about starting school. They stopped outside his classroom and they got down on his level to give him hugs and wish him a good first day. "Hi I'm Miss Lauren. Who do we have here?" She asked
"This is Jackson Burgess and today is his first day of school." Kim responded. "Well Jackson it's nice to meet you. Can you tell me who is here with you today?" Lauren asks. "My mom and dad and my sisters." Jackson answered proudly. "You have such a big family. Do you want to come in and join the other kids playing?' Lauren asked as she welcome into the room. Jackson nodded and hugged his parents before heading. "We love you buddy!" Kim called out trying to hold her tears back. Adam rubbed her back. One down one to go.
Adam once again carried Emma who wasn't shaking as bad now but was still scared. "It's going to be okay sweetie. You can do this! We love you so much!" Adam whispered in her ear making her smile. Kim walked beside them with her hand in Adams back pocket. They got to her classroom and held her closely. They waited for the teacher to be finished with the child ahead. Emma shakes in their arms. They try to soothe her fears as best they can. As the teacher approached Emma buried her face in Adams neck. She started to cry softly. He kept whispering soothing words to her trying to calm her fears.
"Hi. Good morning. I'm Miss Lucy. Can you tell me your name?" The teacher asked Emma trying to see if she would speak. Emma didn't move. "Sorry she's really scared about starting school." Kim explained. She watched Adam rock Emma slightly. It melted her heart. "I completely understand. I have read her file so we understand the unique situation here. We will do everything we can to help make her feel comfortable here." Lucy states soothing the parents fears. Kim texted Voight to let him know she would most likely be late since she was still at the school.
"Sweetie can I place you down. We can walk into the room together okay?" Adam whispers into her ear. He felt her nod so he placed her down and held her hand as they walked in together. They saw her eyes light up seeing all the toys,games and books. She walked quickly to the craft tables to start coloring. The relief was felt around the room. "Are you okay with staying here now?" Kim asked her while sitting next to her. "Will daddy be here to pick me up after school?" Emma asked softly. "Absolutely sweetie! I promise you!" Adam stated confidently. She nodded before hugging her parents. "We love you so much! And we are so proud of you! Have a great first day baby!" Kim says as they leave the room.
They got back outside the school. This time Kim buried her face in Adams chest as she cried. She couldn't believe they just left the kids in school. It was one of the hardest things she ever had to do. Adam was getting his fill of crying women today that's for sure. He was going to need a nap after all of this. "Darling it's okay. They are doing great! It's going to be fine. Now come on you have work today and you are already late. I promise tonight dinner, family time and private time if you know what I mean!" Adam wiggled his eye brows. Kim laughed before kissing him. "Sounds good baby. Okay let me head out. Here let me get Lily in the car and then I will head out." Kim moved to get Lily in the car seat. She sighed heavily as she realized she couldn't stall any longer.
"It will be okay. I love you darling! Have an amazing first day back. Go kick some ass baby!" Adam gave you a very long passionate kiss before smacking her butt. He winked and walked her around to the drivers side of her car. They kissed one last time before she entered the car to drive off. She was really doing this, going back to work. She sat in the parking lot staring at the building getting the courage to go inside. This was real, this was happening, her leave was over. She heard a knock on her window, she was surprised to see Platt looking in at her.
"Come on! It's like riding a bike! I know it's harder today because the kids went to school but you got this. Come on. I will walk you in." Platt had a soft spot for Kim and her family. No one saw this side of her except for those in Intelligence. Kim slowly got out of the car, hands shaking. "Put them in your pocket. Don't show that to anyone beside your team. They have your back." Platt walked in step with Kim as they entered the 21st district. Patrol officers nodded their heads at her when she walked in. She scanned her palm and entered her code opening the gate.
She walked slowly up the stairs trying to calm her nerves. She hit the top of the stairs slowly and quietly. "Welcome back!" Dawson yelled as he ran over to her. He hugged her and swung her around. He was excited to have his partner back. Everyone came over to hug Kim and to welcome her back. She was thrilled with the warm reception and that they didn't go over the top. "Hey how are you feeling after seeing the kids off to school?" Erin asked her knowing her time for that was coming. "God it was so rough! Jackson did well, Emma cried and was shaking and buried her face in Adams neck. It was heart breaking. Then once we got outside I cried. It was horrible! How do people do this everyday?" Kim sighed.
"I don't know girl. I can't even imagine how hard this must be especially with two kids. But you are strong and so are the kids. This is going to be an easy day I promise. We got this." Erin tried to make Kim feel better about the situation. Kim sat back at her desk and noticed that things were missing and moved. It had accused to her that someone probably used her things while she was gone but she wasn't go to make a big deal about it. That was till she noticed her family photo was missing. "Guys did someone use my desk? My family photo is missing. I definitely left it before I went on leave." Kim was confused.
"It was on the desk up until last week. It feel off and broke. We are replacing the frame it will be back this week. I'm sorry I should have told you before hand." Kenny spoke up quietly. Kim nodded and moved on from the topic. "Okay we have a case, it's a simple B and E. Rixton and Dawson look for camera footage in the area, Jay and Erin you will look for signs of entry and damage to the property. Kim you and I will talk to the victim. Let's roll!" Voight calls out the orders as the team grabs their vests to head out.
They arrive at the scene and are met by the first responding officers who had called in for back up. It was over kill but they were new and didn't feel comfortable with the case. Single female victim can make male officers uncomfortable. They list a whole host of possible issues when alone with victims of the opposite sex in the academy. Which is why it's recommended they wear body cameras, to protect themselves. But they didn't who knows why. The team enters the property to see the victim standing alone looking out the windows.
"Ma'am I'm Sergeant Voight and this is my team. How can we help you?" Voight asks softly trying not to startle her too much. When she turned around he heard two separate gasp from the room. The victim and Kim. "Nicole? You are the owner of this apartment?" Kim asked confused and taken aback. "What are you doing here? Why is she here?" Nicole barked out. "Detective Burgess is a member of my team. What's going on here?" Voight asked looking between the women.
"Nicole used to date Adam. She showed up at our months ago looking for Adam. Hit on him in front of me. Tried to get him back. I was just surprised, I'm fine to work the case." Kim explained but didn't want this to effect her judgement on the case. "Okay so let's do the interview so we can get this finished up and you can go home to the kids." Voight assured her. "He really had kids with you?" Nicole asked skeptical of the situation. "Yes Nicole. We have three children together but thats not what this is about. Let's focus on your case." Kim left no room for argument.
As they spoke Kim and Voight noticed Nicole was super nervous and didn't hold eye contact. She looked around as she spoke and her hands shook. She was beyond nervous but they weren't sure why. Sure her apartment was broken into but this was more and they knew it. "Nicole we need you to be honest here. Something else is going on. We can't help you if you don't talk to us. This is our job, trust us." Kim pleaded. They needed to know everything. But before she could speak Erin appeared with a photo in hand and showed it to Kim.
The gasp could be heard blocks away. "Please tell me this isn't real? Please tell me you are not dating the man who intentionally hit Adam with a baseball to his chest. Please tell me you didn't cause that?" Kim was teetering on the edge and Erin and Jay tried to hold her back. "I didn't know he would that. He was talking about having to face some arrogant prick that night and when he mentioned it was Adam I told him we had dated. I didn't know he would hit him in the chest with a ball. Maybe the arm or leg but I didn't think the chest!" Nicole was rambling on but Kim only saw red.
"This is all your fault! The pain he's in, the surgery to save his life! My children scared to lose daddy. My daughter wondering if daddy was going to die like her parents before, my son crying because daddy was there to read to him or hold him. Luckily our youngest is too small to know any better. The fear I had waiting for him while in surgery, my friend left her sick child at home to come sit with me. Don't ever come near us again or so help me god I will have you arrested!" Kim slapped Nicole so hard she fell to the ground.
Kim walked out after that. "Take her back to the district, ice her hand. She can't work this case at all. She's too close to this. Send Dawson and Rixton back. Stay with her, she's too worked up right now." Voight ordered knowing Kim would kill for her family. They all would. Though they all understood how she felt, they had never seen her so angry before and they had never seen her strike a victim. This was some what scary for them all.
Erin found Kim crying by the car. All the emotion just pouring out of her. The pent up emotions from the whole experience was pouring out now. It was heart breaking to see but was certainly needed. "Come on let's head back to the district. Get you some tea. Calm you down some." Erin left no room for argument, just opened the door and motioned for Kim to get in. Kim didn't put up a fight, the fight had left her after fleeing that apartment.
Mouse was the only one upstairs when they returned. He had been told about what went down and had a cup of tea already on her desk waiting. He was one of the most thoughtful members of the team and often forgotten because he stayed behind each time. But he was more important than anyone else. Doing the jobs no one else could do. And right now he was amazing. Kim quietly thanked him before sitting down at her desk. She needed to calm down but her heart was racing and so was her mind.
She knew she needed to tell Adam but it would ruin the day. She was so torn. The injury was a sore spot in his life and the after effects seemed to hang like a dark cloud above him. Maybe this would give him clarity into the situation. She decided to call him and ask him to come to the district. He knew something was up but didn't press since she was insistent on him coming to the district. She stared out the break room windows while she waited for them to arrive. Erin worked the case still with Mouse both checking in with her occasionally. When Adam arrive Platt opened the gate for him. She had no idea why he was coming but was happy to see him and Lily.
"Hey guys where's Kim? What's going on?" Adam asked very confused by the situation. "Break room. I will take Lily so you guys can talk." Erin took Lily leaving Adam more confused and nervous. "Darling. What's going on? Are you okay?" Kim turned at the sound of his voice and rushed into his arms crying all over again. Now he was even more confused and freaking out. "Kim. I need you to talk to me. What's going on? I'm freaking out here." Adam pulled away slightly so he could see her face. She was unharmed so that was good.
"We had a simple case today." Kim started but she was still crying and her breathing was ragged. "Okay if it was simple why are you crying?" Adam asked softly kissing her cheek. "I saw Nicole. She was the victim." Kim explained. Adam was still confused. "Nicole your sister or Nicole my ex?" He had no clue where this was going. "Your ex! She's dating that douche bag who hit you! He knew about your past with Nicole and he took it out on you! That's why all this has happened! She admitted that she thought it would hit you but in the arm or the leg. She didn't think he would hit you in the chest!" Kim yelled through her tears. Adam sat stunned.
The door opened briefly with a box of tissues handed to Adam before the door closed again. He seriously had no idea how to respond. He now understands when people say they are shell shocked, he knows what that means now. He decided to calm Kim first and then deal with the rest. "Darling. Kim. I'm okay. Yes it was all very scary but I'm okay now. Healing well. That's the important thing. The rest we can deal with. The kids are doing okay after it and you and I are solid. I just need you to breathe for me. You are going to hyperventilate if you don't regulate your breathing." He spoke softly and held her in his arms.
Once her breathing calmed down some he got her a water to drink and help wash her face a bit. It was tear stained and her makeup was a mess. She was still beautiful but he knew she wouldn't want people to see her like this. She snuggled into his side sighing being thankful he was here with them. It could have been worse. Though she was still angry. "I'm sorry." Adam spoke up as she closed her eyes and rested her head. "Why are you sorry?" Kim was now the confused one. "I brought Nicole into our lives. This all happened because of me." Adam explained. Disappointed in himself.
"No baby! This isn't your fault! You told her to leave and not come back. This is on her. I don't even know how to deal with her and all this." Kim's eyes were still closed when a knock came on the door. Adam got up to open it. "Not sure if she needs this or not but I'm sure her hand is still stinging." Voight offered an ice pack. Adam looked between the two of them. "She slapped Nicole so hard she fell to the ground. I'm damn proud of her!" Voight smiled and then left them. Adam smirked as he brought the ice pack over to her. "Which hand?" Kim lifted her right hand and it was definitely red. He placed the ice in her hand and sat next to her again.
It took another hour before Kim emerged from the break room. Jay spoke when he saw them. "Just waiting on arrest warrants. We know who broke in and we are going after Nicole as well. Not sure it will stick but we are trying for negligence. She will learn to keep her mouth shut at least." Jay left for the break room as Kim and Adam just hugged. Finding relief that she was being dealt with for her actions. "Okay I'm taking Miss Lily home for food and nap. Then we will get the kids. Get back to work. See you home. Love you darling!" "Love you baby!" They kissed softly before he left down the stairs with Lily asleep in his arms. She couldn't love this man anymore.
