Judge Hanley remained seated behind the Judge's Bench until the two deputies who identified themselves as Joshua Smith and Thaddeus Jones, but who Sheriff Clitterhouse identified as Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry, had paid the Bailiff and exited the courtroom. Even after the two had gone, Judge Hanley lingered behind his bench shuffling and stacking papers.

"Brubaker, do you plan to represent Sheriff Clitterhouse?"

"He hasn't asked me, but if he does, I plan to decline. I think there may well be a conflict of interest being as I am the one who located the money under the floorboards in his house, Judge. I doubt the man would want his own defense attorney testifying against him."

Judge Hanley chuckled, "Yes, yes. I suppose you're right. In fact, I'm inclined to request a special judge for that case as well. I'm not sure I could be completely impartial, knowing what he did to those two...deputies."

"You realize he'lll likely try to implicate us for aiding and abetting," Brubaker said rather cautiously.

"Governor Moonlight is a personal friend of mine and I think he is quite familiar with the names Hannibal Heyes and Kid Curry. Perhaps a visit to the Wyoming State Capital is in order here," Judge Hanley told the attorney.

Brubaker smiled. "Are you saying there's some truth to those amnesty rumors, Your Honor?"

"I'm saying the Governor himself just might have a say in the outcome of this upcoming trial. Perhaps a plea bargain won't be out of the question in exchange for certain... extenuating circumstances to be deemed insubmissible at the trial."

Brubaker nodded, once again impressed by the Judge's wisdom and common sense."It's surprising what greed can do to a man," he mused.

"How long have you been a lawyer, Brubaker?"

"Eight years sir."

"Give yourself another twenty and you'll discover nothing about human nature will surprise you."
