6. Changing Residences
Story Start: One Week Before UA Starts, Rikayo Support Inc, Toyohashi Branch
I followed Snapdragon and Adamant as we headed for what looked like a mix of office and warehouse building. With us were all of the available Minami and Nishiryu family members. Azula and Katara looked rather excited in their different ways, not that I blamed them considering just why we were here. Rikayo had been the Agency's go to support company from the very start. Every Hero working for it got their gear from them and the Legacy Heroes of the Agency had even gotten their first Hero Costumes from them. And now it was Azula, Katara, and my turn.
Entering the building, we were directed to a part of the warehouse section which was set up as a series of testing areas. Azula, Katara, and I were each assigned a different support specialist who took us into a locker room one at a time to go over our new costumes with us and provide any help that might be needed in putting it on the first time. (Hey, it could happen.)
We decided for simplicity's sake to go alphabetically so Azula went first. When she came out ten minutes later she was wearing a bodysuit made out of what I had quickly realized early into my residency at the Tower was the Agency's go to faux spandex fabric. Azula's was a mix of reds that gave off the sense of shifting flames (especially when she moved) with little bits of black mixed in to add a bit of smoke to the imagery. There were thin pieces of rib armor that were painted black in a way to look like more smoke was curled around her torso. She also had thin armor plates going down the outside of her arms and legs though these were painted to blend in with the flames of her bodysuit. A belt with pouches for gear went around her waist, colored to blend in with the bodysuit as well and the same black shoulder armor I remembered from the show finished off the body portion of her costume, just thinner here than they had been in the show.
Her ebony hair was kept in a top knot styled ponytail, held in place by a golden yellow flame shaped hair ornament and her golden eyes peered out from behind her Heads Up Display that took the form of a clear but durable looking visor, the ends connected to a headphone set whose sides were flame patterned, their black headband blending in with her hair and a small extendable mic poking out of the left ear piece, a couple of small knobs behind it.
While Azula had gone with (pun intended) flare in her outfit, Katara apparently decided to keep her aesthetic a bit more simpler. Not to say that it was just one solid color but rather than have, for example, a mass of waves for her outfit pattern, it was a bit more like abstractly shaped puzzle pieces in shades of blue. Actually…I narrowed my eyes and pulled out my phone, going to the Avatar Folder of my Photos App and selecting the Korra album. Huh, talk about coincidences, that was the same pattern used for a 'Plugsuit Week' picture for Korra by Re-Maker, just with the grays swapped for different shades of blue. There was even the wave symbol on the suit just above the breast area and a lightly tinted blue visor and mic like on the picture. (The visor was also connected to earphones, a blue wave pattern to match Azula's flames, a brown covering of the headband to also hide in her hair)
What was different though were the combat boots replacing the heels, the thin plates of armor, and the pouch belt. Like Azula's, they protected her ribs, arms and legs, and patterned to match her bodysuit. And as she turned in a circle for Kanna's inspection it looked like she had a small ten pound water bladder on her back, the pouch holding it being made out of the same material as the bodysuit. That was a good idea, emergency water for if she could for some reason not make her own and a little extra protection for her back.
"So what do you think of their Costumes Tac?" Adamant asked with a grin as she stood beside me.
I gave the pair another look over, said pair looking at me (Azula with a raised eyebrow) and I cocked my head as I said "Well, they definitely look good. (Azula practically preened while Katara looked pleased as well) And it looks like their mobility and range of motion isn't too affected by the outfits while having some armor to help take a hit. That said, the true test will be the first time they get in an actual fight while wearing them."
Jasmine chortled and said "Too true Tac! But that comes later. For now, let's see how you look in yours."
I followed the Support Tech who would be helping me into the locker room. Given the secret of my gender, the leader of the Support Team for this branch was the one that worked on my gear and once the door to the locker room was closed and I dropped my light disguise she said in a happy manner "Just so you know, it wasn't easy keeping the others in the dark about the dimensions of your body and gel suits. It felt like I was some kind of mad scientist building her doomsday weapon right under the noses of her coworkers at the nine to five job she used to fund her nefarious plans."
I couldn't help but snicker a little at that mental image and the team leader grinned at me for a moment before she turned serious and led me over to a cart holding several cases. As we approached it, she said "Needless to say, this Hero Costume would be damn near impossible for most people to put on by themselves. Thankfully, you can make an extra pair of hands to help you with it. If you'll make a Light Clone to watch over my shoulder, I'll walk you through the process."
I nodded and formed the requested sentient construct. First up was the bodysuit made out of the Agency's go to material. Because it wouldn't actually be seen, it was a uniform black. Thankfully it's zipper was on the front so that after making a quick privacy curtain out of light I could easily put it on by myself no problem. As I changed behind the curtain the tech leader explained that it was made that way so that even if I didn't have time to put on the full costume for some reason I would still be able to have a small measure of protection under a light shell simulacrum of the rest of the costume.
When I came out the tech leader had me go through a few mobility exercises. We then put the clear gel suit with ropes of lights embedded in them on. This one was sealed from the back and so needed a second pair of hands (clone or construct) to put on. Once it was in place, I ran through the same mobility tests again.
Once the tech leader was satisfied with my range of motion, we moved onto the really fun stuff, my armor. Both me and my clone listened attentively as she opened each case and walked us through the maintenance I would have to do to keep them in proper working order. Once that was done, she showed what order the pieces were put on, along with how to hook the gel suit lights to the 'light motors' on my shoulders.
Once all of the pieces for the body were on, the tech leader ran a series of tests on the systems in my helmet using a tablet before she nodded and unhooked the helmet from the external battery and handed it to me. We spun up the light motors then spent about ten minutes going through how to operate the helmet's systems both without being able to use my hands and using them with the body capture system. (I probably looked weird with my hands moving through the air interacting with a screen only I could see, but it gave me more options than just voice commands and eye movement manipulation of the systems.)
Once that was done, we made sure I could reach all of the compartments holding my gear, followed by testing the lights at my wrists. The final test was for the mechashift sword and shield and I grinned under my helmet as they unfolded from their forearm compartments. A few more mobility tests later and we were ready to show the others.
Outside with the others, after twenty minutes of waiting, Azula crossed her arms impatiently and stated "This is taking far longer than it did for me or Katara. What on Earth could Tac have designed that would take this long to put on and run system checks for?"
"What indeed?" Snapdragon asked with a mysterious smile, Adamant snickering next to her. Jasmine chortled and even Kanna smiled in amusement. But all four remained silent when the others questioned them. The two support technicians traded looks of amusement between themselves. Their leader may have kept things close to her chest on the manufacturing aspect but you couldn't fully hide making armor and mechashift equipment. It was going to be quite the unique costume in an Agency filled with durable but body fitted bodysuits and minimal armor.
Thirty minutes after the pair entered, the locker room door finally opened and as I stomped out in my armor I enjoyed the looks of surprise on my non teammate and bosses' faces. Ozai (Phoenix when on the job) in particular looked like the teeth of her mental gears had skipped a few times. Apparently they had all expected another form fitting bodysuit and the difference was rather jarring.
Katara blinked after a few moments of staring and said "Well, that's certainly…different."
"Different is right Katara, I am suddenly feeling rather exposed." Azula stated.
Jasmine chortled and said "I admit, it's been quite some time since we had a 'Tank' type Heroine in the Agency's ranks that didn't have a durability enhancing Quirk. I imagine it'll take a bit of time to get used to the sight of that armor in our halls."
There were sounds of agreement from the other Nishiryus and the Minamis before the tech leader got us all moving again to a testing area where we could really put our new costumes through their paces. It wound up being a pretty fun day all things considered. Kind of a shame the Costumes were then sent to UA to hold onto rather than coming back to the Tower with us though. Regulations could be such buzz killers.
Time Skip: The Next Day, The Tower, Conference Room One
UA had a delivery for me, brought by Nezu, Aizawa, and Shiori Kan, aka Vlad Queen. The pair were with Nezu today due to being the homeroom teachers for the upcoming classes 1A and 1B respectively. I was seated across the table from the trio as the pair of teachers each pushed a pile of twenty folders to me and Nezu stated "These are the final forty who were accepted into UA's Hero Course. I would like you to look them over and tell me if you happen to recognize any of them from the media of your home dimension, and thus have any foresight into how to train them in their abilities."
Nodding, I pulled the 1A folders over and began looking through them. The Recommended students were the first files and I found myself raising an eyebrow at the heterochromatic teen with two toned hair looking up at me: One Todoroki Shoko, daughter of the Number Two Hero and with one hell of a burn scar over her left eye. I read through her information for a moment before I said "Right, well I don't know Todoroki from before but I can tell you that the first thing I'd do with her is heal that burn scar of hers."
"Oh, certainly." Nezu said in agreement.
"Second thing is we're going to need to see if she can replicate some of the more eccentric types of ice. I remember one kind that forms in space which is said to be strong enough to take a five hundred pound bomb going off and shrug it off. Third we need to test how slowly and uniformly she can form her ice. If she can do it slowly enough, it can be used either as a prying technique or an impromptu jack. We should also see how hot she can get her fire while keeping a minimal size, having an on command blow torch would certainly be helpful for her."
Aizawa nodded and made a quick note on her notepad.
The second Recommendation student was Yaoyorozu Momo, with Creation for her Quirk. Reading through her file I snorted as I said "Alright, I can tell you right off the bat this lady's Quirk Doctor got their Quirk Analysis wrong. I don't care how densely they're packed, there's no way for a human body to have enough lipids to make some of these objects. Most likely she's tapping into some kind of energy reservoirs and the Lipids are being used as energy to matter converters. And if she has a reservoir, it might be possible to turn it into an inventory to store things she made previously. We should also look into getting her to make items out of nonstandard materials which otherwise would not be feasible to make something with. For example, you're hardly going to ever find a diamond big enough to make a combat staff out of but if Momo makes one it'll certain hit a lot harder than a steel one."
The third one I actually recognized, and like Azula and Katara, was from Avatar, and was Azula's teammate in the show even. Akurobatto Tylee, Quirk: Shatter Point, able to see points in the 'auras' of all things where a blow would cause disruption. Tapping the paper, I said "This one I recognize from before, she's actually from the same series as the Minami and Nishiryu families. She was an acrobat who fought using chi blocking via pressure point strikes. She was basically the monster hiding in every Elemental Bender's closet since she could take away their bending. If she's anywhere near as competent of a fighter here as she was in that series then all I can recommend is we give her an option for ranged combat."
Nezu looked rather amused at that while Aizawa made another note.
Fourth one was a pink skinned and haired girl with yellow sclera and horns sticking out of her fluffy hair. Ashido Mina, Quirk: Acid, able to emit acid from any point of her body, able to control the strength of said Acid, and a bit of resistance to the substance as well, though if she made it too strong it damaged her skin. I recommended getting her some small tanks to hold acid connected to a sprayer to give her more range than just throwing handfuls of acid would give her.
Number five was Asui Tsuyu, Quirk: Frog. A mutant type, she had a frog like body and all of the enhancements such a thing implied. But she also had the temperature weaknesses of frogs as well. I recommended Aizawa getting at least one book on frog abilities, preferably a complete comprehensive guide and treat it as a checklist for what the girl could do. (She proceeded to tell me not just the title but also the author that wrote the book she already planned to use as said checklist. Good to see her being proactive.)
After Asui was Bakugo Katsumi, Quirk: Explosion. I could tell just from her ID Photo that she had as much of a volatile personality as the nitroglycerin she sweated. Seeing that her file only mentioned her shooting off explosions from her hands, I made the suggestion to test whether she could detonate from other points of her body. An explosion from the back of her elbow would give her quite a punch.
Number seven was Fenton Dani, an American transfer, Quirk listed as Ghost, which allowed her to turn herself and anything touching her intangible, gave her flight, and turn invisible. Tapping my finger on her file, I said "She looks like a male character from back home called Danny Phantom. I didn't see much of the show to be honest but a YouTube Channel called Death Battle covered him once. A science experiment by his parents turned him half ghost. He could do a lot more than just fly, phase, and cloak. He also had a sonic weapon in his scream, ectoplasmic blasts, and a duplication ability similar to my Light Clones. I don't know if Dani here can do the same but it'd be worth testing."
"Interesting." Aizawa said as she jotted that down.
The Eighth student was Hawkins Virgil, the gender bent Static Shock I had worked with to stop the Zero Pointer in the Entrance Exam. Like Dani, I had some advice from the Death Battle episode done on her male counterpart.
After Hawkins was Iida Tomoyo, another legacy Hero and younger sister to Ingenium. Her Engine Quirk manifested in her legs and I said "We should see about getting a scan of those engines in her legs. With me there to heal the incisions, it might be possible to add a cooling system that would allow those things to run both harder and longer."
Nezu nodded and said "Something to bring up with the Iida family at some point."
I nodded and added "Parkour is also a must, along with dual grappling guns to help her run up vertical surfaces, though it'll probably tricky for her to get the timing down for that last one."
Jiro Kyoka was tenth and I stared at her picture for so long, Nezu actually leaned forward in concern and asked "Tac, is something wrong?"
Looking up, I shook my head and said "Nothing's wrong, it's just that I recognize her."
"Oh? I assume not from one of the series from your home reality given your reaction to her photo." Nezu stated.
I shook my head again and said "You're right, she's not from one of the franchises from back home. No, I know her from after I came here. I had to regrow her right arm from the elbow down, she was one of the victims of that band of Villains that attacked during the press conference Kanna set up."
Aizawa frowned and immediately made a note while Nezu clasped her hands together and said "Oh my, I was unaware one of our upcoming students had experienced such a traumatic event. Aizawa-"
"Already noted her down for at least one session with Hound Dog to take place first week of class." Aizawa interrupted and Nezu nodded her approval before she added "And keep an eye on her for phantom pains and phantom itches. There haven't been reports of them from any of Tac's patients that I know of, but best not to take any chances with one of our students."
Aizawa nodded and made another note which were soon added to with my suggestions for what she could do in regards of augmenting her Quirk Support Gear Wise.
Following Jiro was Kirishima Eiko, a ravenette with a Hardening Quirk.
Midoriya Izumi was the twelfth down the list. The curly haired verdette had Orbit for her Quirk, which for the most part was just like what the name suggested: she could make objects orbit around her body. The interesting thing was that much like an electrical magnet wrapped in wire, those objects spinning around her gave Izumi energy increasing her strength. The more and faster objects orbited her, the stronger she got. I made a support gear suggestion of having gauntlets that had motor-less fan blades set in them that could be opened on either end to both generate wind streams and provide thrust for flight, possibly even having matching pieces of gear on her legs. Nezu's delighted cackling lasted for a good two minutes after I made that suggestion. (I would later learn that Izumi was way ahead of me, having thought of that a little over ten years ago when she was seven.)
After Midoriya was Minami Katara followed by Nishiryu Azula. Other than a few mobility enhancement skills I had seen them use in the Avatar show, there wasn't really much to recommend given they were both Legacies.
Following Azula was a character from Fire Emblem Fates, Nohr Elise. She actually shared her Quirk with her sister Hoshido Sakura. (Apparently they each took a different mother's name.) It was kind of crazy that they had the same Quirk like that, as was the fact that Sakura would be in 1B. Naturally as Healers both would be apprenticing under Recovery Girl while they were at UA. The shared Quirk was a strange one too, the sisters were basically shock absorbers, they took in kinetic force, able to either return it immediately or store it for future use. OR, and here was the weird part, they could apparently turn that kinetic force into healing energy. Somewhat worryingly, there was actually a note that this girl that I remembered from the game as a ball of sunshine had gone on to (and won) the regional championships for Eskrima, same with Staff fighting competitions.
Slowly looking up from the file when I finished reading it, I gave Nezu a look and asked "Nezu, did you give me a fake file as a joke?"
Nezu's cackling did not inspire confidence.
Moving on!
Student number sixteen was Shoji Mai, with Dupli Arms for her quirk giving her three pairs of arms rather than one, able to make extensions on those limbs that could end in either hands, eyes, ears, or even a nose. Definitely someone to get e quiped with half a dozen batons or brass knuckles.
Number seventeen was one Silverspirit Yayen. She had an anthropomorphic wolf body with black and grey fur, a few touches of red to it.* Despite that though her Quirk wasn't Wolf Body, but instead was Wolf Pack. She was able to take any material in a short radius around her and turn it into wolf constructs (even less solid things like air, electricity, or fire could be used.) Conservation of Mass was still a thing though so the constructs were only as big as what she had to work with. Still, with air being a viable option, I didn't think she would have too many problems with having something to work with.
After Silverspirit was Stacy Gwen, Quirk: Spider Attribute. Like Asui, her Quirk gave her certain abilities without making her look like an actual spider. Girl had the spider sense, increased durability, strength, and web generating.
"Sure are a lot of transfers from America." I muttered.
"It's mostly because All Might operated in the United States for a time before coming back here." Nezu said and I gave a soft 'Ah' in understanding.
The penultimate student was yet another girl with animal features. In this case, Tokoyami Fumiko had a bird head. Her Quirk Dark Shadow was a sentient shadow entity that she could summon and control. Dark Shadow grew stronger the darker it was but the stronger it got the harder it was to control. Tapping the file, I said "I recommend we get this girl the brightest type of hand held flare possible, and have her keep them in arms reach whenever she's expected to use her Quirk at night or in buildings, tunnels, or caves."
"Logical." Aizawa agreed.
I thought for a moment before I added "We should also see if it's possible for Tokoyami to use Dark Shadow as a flight method."
"Now that would be an interesting sight." Nezu said even as Aizawa made a note.
The last student was one Uraraka Ochako, Quirk: Anti Gravity. If she touched something with all five finger pads of a hand then she could cancel out that object's gravity, including herself and other people. She currently had a weight limit of three tons and if she overused her Quirk or used it on herself for too long then it made her incredibly nauseous.
Lightly frowning, I said "Ignoring my initial thought to train this girl by simulating a zero g flight path, aka a vomit comet, (there goes Nezu with the cackling again) I think we should see if she can do that trick with magnets and paper clips, and if so get her a cable launcher so that way she can latch onto things out of arm's reach."
Aizawa nodded and as she wrote that suggestion down stated "It might be a good idea to give ALL of the Hero Course students a training session or two in Zero G so that way they know how to operate if they run into a Villain with a similar ability." She then frowned and said "Of course, the problem is that planes are normally rather narrow."
"That shouldn't be a problem with Tac's constructs, I'll clear it with the appropriate authorities." Nezu said happily.
Should I tell her? Yeah, I'm going to tell her. Leaning forward and making a small construct in the shape of circular tube with line markings allowing the others to see it rotating, I said "I can also set up something to train them in increased gravity as well."
Nezu cackled and said "I foresee us hiring your services once or twice a year after you graduate Tac. Perhaps you should consider offering this service to others once you turn Pro as well."
"Hm, if we do it out over the ocean I could have constructs large enough for several groups, maybe have it available every three or so months, I'd still be going to the hospital on Saturdays after all." I mused.
"You two can work out the logistics of such an enterprise at a later date, for now can we get back to going over the students' files? We still have Vlad's to do after all." Aizawa stated.
"Right, sorry about that." I said, putting Uraraka's folder on top of 1A's new stack and pushing it away before pulling 1B's towards me instead.
The first recommended student of 1B was Honenuki Juzo, a woman with a skull like appearance due to not having any lips over her teeth with the Quirk Softening. She was able to 'soften' anything non living via touch, to the point of apparently being able to swim through previously solid materials, and return them back to their original solidity with another touch. I recommended Vlad talk with her about having seismic and audio sensing tech added to her gear since I could see her serving as an underground rescue hero dealing with collapsed cave systems.
Tokage Setsuna was 1B's other recommended student. Her Quirk was called Lizard Tail Splitter and it reminded me of Buggy's Devil Fruit from One Piece but with regeneration added in. (Though said regeneration apparently took a lot out of her.)
Awase Yosetsu was the first student to earn a spot in 1B through the regular Entrance Exam. The black haired teen wearing a bandana across her forehead had the ability to weld both organic and inorganic objects in place so long as she was touching them making her good for both restraining villains and creating emergency support for collapsing structures.
After her was the speech bubble headed Fukidashi Manga, Quirk: Comic. She could use her Quirk to create Onomatopoeia that spawned various effects, reminding me of the one girl from Fairy Tail. I recommended Vlad to look into teaching her Onomatopoeia of different languages since they could sometimes be quicker to call out than their Japanese counterparts.
The fifth student of 1B was Hoshido Sakura, Nohr Elise's sister. Like Elise, Sakura had gone on to win Regional Championships, though in her case it was for Archery. Apparently she was extremely good with multiple types of bows, from the super tall Yumi bow to the compact compound bow. I recommended having her speak with the Support Course about obtaining specialty arrows, turning her into a Hawkeye or Green Arrow.
Hyuga Hinata was the first Naruto Character I had encountered in this world since Kushina. Her Quirk Surround Sight gave her three hundred and fifty nine degree vision along with the ability to view the various layers of something. While she was apparently trained in throwing knives, like Tylee of 1A she was also trained in pressure point strikes.
Student number seven was Jacobson 'Cass' Cassie. Her Quirk was titled the same as the series I knew her from. Animorph allowed her to 'acquire' any animal she touched and shift into that animal. She even had the thought speech ability which would allow her to communicate with others while shifted. No mention of a time limit in her file but I told Kan to look into that since there had been a two hour limit in the series where if a person was morphed that long they were stuck in that form permanently (unless the Eliminest stepped in). There was a note that like in the series Cassie's parents ran an amusement park/zoo/animal clinic so she already had access to quite the number of animal forms.
I recognized Johnson 'Skye' Daisy from Marvel's Agents of SHIELD series. She had Vibrokinesis listed for her quirk and a special note from Nezu that she was an incredibly gifted programmer and Hacker. (The rodent actually had a list of the federal watch lists this girl was already on.)
Kaibara Senko was a short haired dark brunette with Gyrate as her Quirk. She could spin any body part at high speed. Frowning slightly at that explanation, I looked up and said "It might be possible she could add a kind of tube around the arches of her costume's boots and spin them for high speed movement, though her balance would have to be damn near perfect for that."
Kan nodded and noted that possibility down.
Kendo Itsuka was definitely giving me 'big sister' vibes as she gave the camera a confident grin. The teal eyed orangette had a body expansionist Quirk centered in her hands called Big Fist. Like the two healer Sisters it was noted that she had reached Regionals for martial arts competitions, though she wasn't the only one.
Like Daisy, I knew May Melinda from Agents of Shield. Her Preternatural Reflexes Quirk made her a real monster to fight against, making it seem like she could predict what her opponent would do. She was also noted to be fire arm trained, a real rarity in the severely anti gun Japan. (Though given she was a Chinese-American transfer from the States…)
Monoma Neiro had Copy for her Quirk, allowing her to temporarily Copy the Quirks of others she makes physical contact with, up to three Quirks for five minutes. My immediate suggestion was to teach her how to cold read people so that way she could make educated guesses about a person's Quirk before they used it.
Like Hinata, Nefertari Vivi was only the second person I recognized from the One Piece franchise. Her Quirk of Textilekinesis brought to mind the World Building the Crossbrain did for the SI fanfic 'This Bites!' where the Cloth Cloth fruit used to be a Guardian Devil Fruit for Vivi's country before it was lost. Given my own One Piece fanfic where my character had that same devil fruit, I had an actual list for Kan about what could be possible, first and foremost of course being sure Vivi knew how to fly using her control over her own clothes.
Student number fourteen was Shiozaki Ibara and she had the Quirk Vines which replaced normal human hair with thorny vines that she could grow, manipulate, and even detach. She could regrow more vines so long as she had enough water and sunlight. I don't know why, but the first thought that came to my mind after reading about her Quirk was that she could pull of a Dr. Octavious, aka Doc Ock. Vlad looked a bit piqued when I shared the thought with her.
Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu was silver haired and had a Quirk very similar to Kirishima's but instead of Hardening had Steel for her Quirk.
Marvel really had a strong showing in these two classes. The next student was Togata Pryde Kitty, who I immediately recognized as Kitty Pryde, aka Shadowkat of the X-men. She had an older sister who would be a third year of the Hero Course this year and the two sisters shared the same Quirk as their mother: Permeation. It allowed them to turn intangible though it was noted that their clothes didn't turn intangible when they did so.
That bit of information made me frown and go back to the 1A folders to look at Dani's file. When I didn't see any mention of her losing clothes, I looked up to the teachers and asked "Any idea why Togata's clothes don't go intangible while Fenton apparently doesn't have that problem?"
"Similar Quirks doesn't automatically mean they have the same limitations." Nezu stated.
"Togata has already put in a request for her hero costume to be DNA doped so that she does not lose it every time she goes intangible." Vlad stated and I gave a nod at that.
Tsuburaba Kosei was another with slightly 'abnormal' facial features, her eyes being ovals in both pupil and over all shape. Her Quirk Solid Air was pretty self explanatory, she could make platforms out of the air she exhaled. Needless to say, breathing exercises to increase lung capacity would be a must. I also made a recommendation to see about getting the girl some weapon training because the ability to breathe weapons into existence were too much of an edge to not take advantage of. (Aizawa nodded in approval when I said that.)
Tsunotori Pony was yet another transfer from the States. Her body showed a mutation Quirk in her ancestry of the equine variety, having digitigrade legs with hooves for feet, a short tail to go with the long blonde hair that reached her mid back, and a semi equine facial structure with wide eyes. Her Quirk however were the pair of lyre shaped horns on the top of the head. As the name Horn Cannon suggested, she could shoot the horns off her head and she would immediately regrow new ones. She could also apparently control their flight, though currently she could only do that for two of them. Definitely potential though for use as flight implements.
The second to last student of 1B was Yui Kodai. The shoulder length bob style ravenette gave off a rather stoic appearance in her ID photo. She had Size for her Quirk which allowed her to alter the size of any non living object that she touched. Like Uraraka, her Quirk was canceled by touching her fingertips together. My immediate thought was that this girl could be a one woman supply convoy carrying an entire relief task force's inventory making it much easier to get the supplies to trouble spots.
Yurei Perona was the last student and I immediately recognized her as the Ghost Princess of the One Piece series. Like Robin, her devil fruit from the 'source material' had transferred over into her Quirk. Called Empty Ghost, it allowed her to form ghosts which could suck any emotion she wanted out of a person making it perfect for taking the will to fight out of a villain or remove the panic from civilians. It also gave her the ability to generate implosions. And finally she could see and communicate through them. She also apparently was a student of the Parasol-Fu school of combat.
I let Vlad know of OP Perona's ability to astral project but given her ability here to communicate through her ghosts it kind of felt like splitting hairs. I also brought up OP Perona's Entomophobia as a possible concern down the line. (Though considering the gleam Nezu suddenly got in her eyes I feared what the principal would come up with to 'help' Perona overcome said phobia if she had it here.)
After I closed Perona's folder, I pushed the two stacks back to the teachers and our discussion shifted to what I was most likely going to need in my stand alone housing unit that was going to be situated between the two Class 1 Dorms. Thankfully I was not in the habit of going on cooking sprees so I didn't need a ton of kitchen gear beyond the basic fridge, freezer, sink, an oven just big enough to bake a pizza, and a microwave. Well okay, there was one more thing I needed.
Aizawa rose an eyebrow and asked "An air fryer, really?"
"Hey, don't knock them, they're better than microwaves when it comes to reheating solid foods and they're great for cooking smaller portions." I said. Seriously, I loved the air fryer I had back home.
Nezu chuckled and as she marked that down on her own notepad said "I believe we should be able to get you one of them with little trouble Tac. What about a tea kettle or a coffee machine?"
"Pass, I don't drink either, and while I'm sure a staff member well visit at some point, I don't think it'd be worth having one of them just to spend the majority of time taking up space in my cupboards."
"Rational." Aizawa said with a nod.
"Indeed, We'll just have to bring a thermos of our preferred beverage when we check up on him I suppose." Nezu said before she continued "Moving on, are you alright with just a recliner for your living room or would you prefer a couch to lay on?"
"Let's stick with the recliner for simplicity's sake, though if I could get a couple of folding chairs for visiting teachers as well I'd appreciate it." I said.
Nezu nodded at that and asked "I remember you mentioning once that you purchased an entertainment system, will a forty eight inch screen tv suffice or should we go bigger?"
I cocked a head for a moment as I remembered what the tv in the spare bedroom that served as my game room had been. Remembering that it was thirty two, I said "Forty eight should be plenty."
We continued to knock out the details. Both Aizawa and Vlad thought that I was crazy for turning down a jacuzzi but I was perfectly fine with just a shower stall that I could actually stretch out in rather than having to lift up my knees to clean my legs like what I had here at the Tower. I did go for a Queen sized bed though since I had actually rolled out of my Captain's Bed more than once in my sleep. I made a light construct railing after the third time it happened, and yes, Kushina found it absolutely hilarious when she found out.
Once that discussion was finished, the discussion turned towards what I would actually be expected to do as a Hero Course Teacher's Aid with my abilities. The creating opponents for the other students and provide on site healing for any really bad injuries was a given, but there was also what role I would take in different kinds of emergencies and how I would help the homeroom teachers run herd on the students if something came up in one of the two dorms.
The final thing we covered was Azula, Katara, and my arrival to the school. Given my open status as a dimensional traveler and my not so well known status as a quirked male in a world where that just didn't happen, it was felt that I should travel straight from the Tower to the university by air rather than take any chances bringing myself, the other two, and all of our stuff by car and moving truck. And yes, Nezu assured me she had already received Jasmine and Kanna's permission for me to bring Azula and Katara to the school that way.
After that discussion, the trio left the Tower and I tracked down Katara and Azula to be sure they knew about how we were getting to the school in four days time.
Time Skip: Day Before Classes Start
The sun had just cleared the horizon as I made the last few taps on my phone to lock in our flight path. At my feet were a few boxes holding almost everything I had accumulated over my ten and a half months in this world, a book bag on my back holding the rest. The elevator doors a level below me opened and I heard Azula and Katara come climbing up the steps. Their own luggage was being carried by a small number of light clones shaped like the Pokémon Machamp and Katara said "Thanks for the help Tac, I wasn't looking forward to making multiple trips up these stairs with everything."
"Yes, that would be annoying, even if we put them into their ramp configuration." Azula stated.
(Yeah, the stairs could be angled into a ramp if needed, which I found pretty cool.)
With both my passengers here and our flight path accepted by the flight authorities, it was time to make our ride. Light coalesced in front of us into a triangular hull with wings that ended in VTOL propellers and a tail fin on either side of the wider end of the hull. The cockpit was set practically right up to the nose and had only three seats set in a triangle formation but the storage bay was plenty big to hold all of our things.
"Huh, never seen a helicopter like that before." Katara said even as we all began moving our gear to the storage section.
"Well I was originally going to go with an Osprey but that seemed a bit overkill with just the three of us so I improvised." I said with a shrug.
Soon as our luggage was loaded, we made for the cockpit and I made a ladder for the two to use. (They were both sensibly wearing jeans so it didn't have to be steps) Once all three of us were seated, strapped in, and had a set of Agency provided radio headsets on so that way we could actually talk on the way there, I formed a mesh bubble canopy then began flicking a series of switches on a switch board on my right side. Right tail control, left tail control, right rotor angle, left rotor angle, right rotor propeller, left rotor propeller.
As I did so, Katara asked "Why are you doing that if you're controlling this construct mentally?"
"Helps with the visualization." I said and Katara gave a soft 'oh'. After the sixth switch was flicked both rotors began spinning and I toggled my mic on before placing my phone in a slot on the dashboard in front of me as I said "Toyohashi Control, this is Flight 384 from Tsutsuji Agency to UA University, requesting permission for take off."
"Roger Flight 384, Take Off Corridor is open, you are cleared for take off." A flight control officer from the local airport stated.
My left hand reached over to a throttle and pushed it forward, the rotors building up speed as I did so and we lifted up into the air. Once we were twenty feet off the ground, I spun a knob on the two handed joy stick with my right thumb and the rotors tilted forward to a forty five degree angle. We began moving forward while continuing to accelerate until we reached our assigned height at which point I set the rotors to fully horizontal. UA here we come.
Time Skip: Arrival Over UA
UA actually had multiple helipads around the campus. It was understandable given the large amount of training areas for teaching future Heroes as well as what the Support Course got up to. Emergency medical evacuations were always a possibility and it would be a pain to haul the material the Support Course needed farther than necessary to where said material would be used. That said, even I wasn't expecting the helipad I had been assigned as my arrival point to be located no more than fifty yards in front of the Year One Hero Course dorms with a one lane path connecting to the main road in front of the dorms.
As we came in, I could feel Azula's raised eyebrow as she asked "Are you really going to be dormed in that middle building? It looks more like a military ammunitions storage bunker than a residence."
Fair enough since said building was a one story square block of concrete with no windows. However...,
I chuckled and said "It actually shouldn't be as bad staying there as it looks, Nezu said she didn't want any students trying to sneak a peak through windows but I'll have screens where windows should be with cameras showing what's outside, and I'll be able to have them display other locations as well if I want."
"That seems kind of paranoid, even for housing a person with your circumstances." Katara said uncertainly.
I shifted the rotors to vertical and began our final descent to the pad as I said "Maybe, but I appreciate it none the less." 'Especially given the circumstance you and Azula don't know about.' I silently added.
Nezu, Aizawa, and the blocky Cementoss were standing on the edge of the helipad as we came down, a squadron of small robots standing behind them. As we set down and I popped the hatch, Nezu cheerfully said from Aizawa's shoulder "Welcome students, I hope your trip was pleasantly uneventful."
"Well, no Villains decided to imitate anti aircraft artillery or interceptor aircraft, and there weren't any spontaneous thunderstorms to fly through so there's that." I said cheerfully as I made a ladder for the other two even as I vaulted over the edge of the cockpit to land on the ground with bent knees.
As I opened the storage part of the helicopter's hull Nezu chuckled and said "Good, good. The rest of the students of 1A and 1B finished arriving yesterday so once you have finished settling in Minami and Nishiryu I recommend you familiarize yourself with them. Tac, there is a final staff meeting planned for noon. Cementoss will be staying with you in order to show you where to go."
I nodded my understanding and with the little robots carrying our gear and the helicopter construct released, we made our way to the separate buildings.
Time Skip: Noon
The staff meeting took place in a conference room on the tenth floor of the back right building on the main campus structure, incidentally (or not) giving us a good view of the dorms for all of UA's students. Almost everyone was already present, we were just waiting for one last staff member. (And I was still surprised that All Might of all people would be teaching here this year.) As Power Loader came in at practically the last second, I turned away from the windows and made my way to sit between Vlad and Aizawa.
"That girl is going to be the death of me." Power Loader said with a heavy sigh as she didn't so much sink into her chair as plummet.
"Hatsume still trying to start building early I take it?" Present Mic asked with a grin.
Power Loader grunted and said "What's worse is that everyone has already turned in their signed copies of the safety rules but her. It wouldn't surprise me if those sheets of paper have started collecting dust by now from where she dropped them and never even read them."
I frowned at that and leaned forward as I said "I'm sorry, I know the Support Course isn't why I was brought on, but wouldn't a failure to turn that in be a reason to kick her out of the school?"
Power Loader grunted and said "Hatsume is eccentrically driven, but she's good. ('When she's not making explosions.' She grumbled) I'll be giving her another copy after the meeting and ensuring she reads all of it with the understanding that if she doesn't she's out of here."
'Explosions?!' I thought in alarm, wondering HOW Power Loader could know that when she wasn't allowed to actually build things yet. Then again, there would have been an entrance exam for Support Course as well so she would have already seen this 'Hatsume' in action.
"Well since we're already on the topic, I suppose we might as well start with the Support Course this meeting. Are there any other troubles besides your enthusiastic student we must address?" Nezu asked with hands clasped on the table.
There weren't, and most of the other staff had nothing to report beyond a few returning students who could need a little extra help with their studies. Then we got to the Hero Course and oh boy…
Rivalries that had to have an eye kept on to keep from going too far in training, Modifications/Additions of support gear and outright costume changes, who was close to having their Quirk undergo an evolution and the extrapolations of what said evolution could entail. It all came off as a reminder session rather than a briefing but good grief, what did I agree to?
And then we got to the first years. Aizawa leaned forward and said "It's too soon to tell with Minami and Nishiryu of course given their arrival this morning, but observation of 1A's common room, kitchen, and dining area show no immediate concerns when it comes to interclass interactions." She then frowned a little and said "That said, Bakugo has both quite the mouth and the attitude in her, though Midoriya seems to be able to keep her somewhat calm."
Nezu hummed in understanding and said "Well, she's hardly the first aggressive student we've taught before." She gained a frown of her own and asked "What about Jiro?"
I perked up a little at the mention of the former amputee and Aizawa's frown turned thoughtful as she said "She seems to be functioning fine. I did inform her upon her arrival yesterday that we wished for her to see Hound Dog at least once this week. She seemed rather embarrassed we knew about the incident but said readily enough that she would do so."
We all looked towards Hound Dog in question and she gave a somehow distinctly canine sort of grunt as she said "She contacted me by email last night, wanted to know how soon we could do it, so the first session will be tomorrow at six, I'll know whether or not she needs more after that."
There were a couple of blinks from the staff and Nezu smiled a little as she said "It says good things that she's not trying to put it off until the end of the week."
There were sounds of agreement from the others at that and I leaned forward getting everyone's attention as I said "I talked with Dr. Liaou after our meeting and she was able to get confirmation that none of the amputees I treated so far have reported any Phantom Symptoms from their regrown limbs so I think we're good on that front. I'll keep an eye on her during class though just in case."
Nezu nodded in approval at that and we shortly moved onto 1B. Like with 1A there weren't any immediate concerns but after reporting that Vlad bit her lip with her front teeth for a brief moment before she sighed and said "I think I might have another student for you to see soon Hound Dog, Monoma was rather disgruntled about being assigned to 1B, I suspect she may have an Inferiority Complex brought about by her Quirk."
I blinked, ran that through my head for a moment then winced as I said "Ooh yeah, a mimic put in the 'second' class, that's not going to do her self esteem any favors. Sorry Vlad, I should have realized when you guys were showing me the class register."
Vlad waved a hand and said "Not your fault Tac, it's not like we have psychological profiles made before we accept students."
Aizawa grunted and said "We can only go by what we observe while the test takers are on the campus and Monoma did not display such a thing during the test."
"Send her to me sometime this week and I'll see what I've got to work with." Hound Dog stated and Vlad nodded.
The meeting ran for another five minutes then Nezu ended it as she said "Alright, I believe that's everything everyone. Tac, could you stay for a moment?"
As the actual teachers stood up and left, I remained seated wondering what this was about. When the door closed, Nezu hopped up on the table and walked down it before settling down in front of me as she asked cheerfully "Are your accommodations satisfactory?"
I nodded and said "Everything seems to be in order." My lips twitched upwards and I said "Thanks for giving me pants with the uniforms rather than skirts by the way. My grandmother might have been Scottish but I don't think I'm ready to actually start wearing kilts anytime soon." It was one thing to have a light disguise wearing a dress, but there wasn't a single one in my closet and I didn't plan to change that anytime soon.
Nezu chittered in amusement at that for a moment and said "You're quite welcome Tac. Every once in a while we get students uncomfortable with wearing skirts for one reason or another so you're hardly the first to wear them." She then grinned and said "You're actually not even the first male to attend UA."
I blinked in surprise at that and asked "Really? Even with how few males are in this word?"
"Quite, we had a rather promising American named Dexter come through our Support Course twelve years ago. Very bright lad." Nezu said happily.
"Dexter huh," I said before I asked "Short red hair, glasses, probably really short height wise?"
Nezu nodded and said "That's him! Someone else from one of your world's media then."
I nodded and said "He's from Dexter's Laboratory where he had an absolutely massive lab hidden under his house that his parents had absolutely no idea about."
Nezu chittered in amusement at that again before she turned serious and stated "Don't hesitate to let us know if we need to make any changes to your dorm Matthew, you'd be surprised how much being dissatisfied with something seemingly minor at your residence can affect your work."
I nodded at that and said "I'll let you guys know if anything pops up."
Nezu nodded and five minutes later I was exiting the main campus building as I headed back to the dorms. As I did so, I saw Aizawa leaning against the wall, apparently waiting for me as she pushed off of it and said "Tac, I've got a favor to ask you to do for me tomorrow morning."
Well this should be interesting.
