Catalina is staying at Windsor Castle with her daughter, Mary, when she hears the news. "King Henry wants you to leave your apartments here and take up residence at the More," a messenger says. "You ladies must pack Her Majesty's belongings and prepare yourselves for the journey."
Catalina sighs. "I guess I should have expected this. Mistress Emma, can you please pack up my personal belongings?"
"Of course, Your Majesty." I curtsey to her and head over to Catalina's desk, where she stores her papers, including her letters from Anne. I begin tidying everything up when Jane walks over to help me.
"How long do we have to pack?" Catalina asks the messenger.
"Around an hour," the messenger replies. "The King wants Mistress Anne to use these apartments once you have left."
I should have known better than to trust him—or is he keeping with history? No, I didn't tell him about this. So, what did Henry mean when he said he wanted us all to be on his council? There is no way he could've meant it. He is just like every other sexist man. King Henry believes that all women are good for are producing heirs. Well, the six of us will prove the opposite. I know I certainly will when I become Queen. I won't let him get away with everything he's doing to my friends.
Jane offers me a friendly smile when we finish packing Catalina's letters before we move to different areas of the room. Jane packs some of Catalina's embroidery with help from other ladies, while I help Mum and Mummy pack her clothes. We keep our eyes on the messenger at all times as we pack. Catalina walks over to the window and looks out. "Can I say goodbye to my daughter?"
"No, Your Majesty. The two of you must leave Windsor as soon as possible."
"That is uncalled for!" I yell. "At least let them say goodbye! This is the last time Princess Mary will see the Queen before she dies in 1536! Have a heart!"
"I am simply following orders."
"That is what everyone says," I growl at the end of my sentence and pass one of the dresses to Mummy. I don't want to tear it up on accident if I fly into a rage. "If you were married and had kids, would you let your wife say goodbye to them before she had to leave, knowing she'll never see them again?"
"That has nothing to do with the situation."
"It has everything to do with the situation! This is exactly what King Henry is doing now!"
"I am following orders, and you must all vacate the royal apartments with immediate effect."
He walks toward me, and I try to stifle a gasp. I recognise those cold blue eyes and dark hair anywhere! He might only be a boy now, but I know exactly what he will become by 1540. "Watch it, Culpeper."
Culpeper steps back. "How do you know my name?"
"Like you care. You do not care about any woman, or if you do now, you certainly won't by 1540. You better watch yourself or you might find yourself on the bad side of a soul stealer."
"Is that a threat?"
"That's a promise."
"Do you two know each other?" Catalina asks.
"Sort of, Your Majesty. He is one of the people who will bully me in the future."
"That explains your attitude towards him. But he must do more than bully you if you are making that sort of threat."
"He does, Your Majesty, but I dare not say what he does."
Culpeper keeps watching us as we pack the Queen's belongings, and I notice his gaze focuses on me more than on anyone else. It makes my skin crawl, and my heart beat faster. "Mum?" I whisper.
"Yeah?"
"Can you do something to scare him away? I don't like the way he's looking at me."
We look at him, and he's still looking at me. "I can see into his mind, and it's not pretty." Mum looks at me again. "He's imagining you naked."
"Is there anything you can do to stop that?"
"No, but I can scare him off for now." Mum drops something on the floor. "Oh, butterfingers!" She exclaims, and she bends down. She looks like she's going to pick it up, but I hear her whisper something in a language I don't recognise. The red object comes to life and heads straight for Culpeper. It grows bigger and starts growling at him.
Culpeper screams like a little girl and runs.
"Great job, Mum," I beam.
"I do my best." Mum kneels, and her stomach returns to her hand.
"What was that?" Catalina asks.
"That was my stomach—or rather, one of them."
"Why did you scare Culpeper with it?"
"Emma didn't like the way he was looking at her, and I wanted to teach him that he can't always get what he wants."
"Oh, dear. At least no one was hurt by your stunt."
"If he did get hurt, he would've deserved it considering what he does to me in the future," I say.
"Don't tell me he rapes you," Mum says. She turns to me with a pleading look in her eyes.
"I'm afraid he does. He also tries to rape Kitty, but I attack him. He... let's just say he doesn't get out of that situation."
"You kill him?" Catalina asks.
"Yes, Your Majesty."
"In that case, considering the circumstances, he would have deserved it. I normally do not condone violence, but Culpeper will deserve it when the time comes."
I never thought Catalina will react like that, but then again, a lot of things that happened to me have surprised me. We continue packing without any more incidents, mainly because Culpeper doesn't turn up again. However, when we finish, a group of ladies who left Catalina's service come in. They are serving Anne, so Anne and the King must have turned up. They are beginning to unpack Anne's belongings, and before long, Anne herself arrives. "Catalina," Anne smiles.
"Anne." Catalina's voice sounds warm and caring. "I trust your journey here was uneventful."
"Of course." Anne looks at each of us. "I was not expecting you lot to still be here."
"An event held us up, but we are all right. I have no doubt that the man will be running to the King now to try and get us into trouble."
"I will do what I can so you and your household do not get into trouble."
"Thank you, Lady Anne. Well, I guess we should go."
"No, wait!" Anne grabs Catalina's arm as Catalina goes to walk past her. "I know we will not be on the best of terms now—"
"That is not your fault or mine."
"I know, but I will do everything I can to help you and Princess Mary. If I can do anything to help, write to me and let me know. I will talk to His Majesty and do what I can to assist."
"Thank you, Lady Anne."
"Have a safe journey, Your Majesty." Anne lets go of Catalina and moves to one side. Catalina spares Anne one more smile before she walks out, and we pick up her trunks and follow her out.
We begin climbing on our horses and prepare to leave when King Henry walks over to us. "You should have left by now," he tells Catalina. "Master Culpeper says one of your ladies scared him."
"He deserved it. Ruby said he was looking at Emma funny."
King Henry turns to Mum. "That is no reason for you to scare him like that."
"I was able to get a quick peek in his mind as his emotions were strong, Your Majesty," Mum says, "and what I found there degraded my daughter in the worst way possible. I wanted to teach him that such thoughts are unacceptable." She climbs on top of her horse. It snorts but stays still. It moves around a little, but at least it is not trying to throw Mum off. We had a few incidents of horses throwing Mum off because they can sense her soul-stealing abilities. At least I haven't been thrown off yet. Maybe my hybrid nature helps them calm down.
"You cannot use your—what was it you used to scare him?"
"My stomach, or rather, one of them. The one I used is my soul-stealing stomach, so Culpeper got off lightly."
"Well, I will talk to him about his behaviour and tell him such thoughts surrounding your daughter is unacceptable. However, do not use your stomach to scare someone in the future. Only get it out if you are going to kill them. The same goes for you, Mistress Emma. Do you both understand?"
"Yes, Your Majesty," Mum and I chorus.
"Because of what happened, Mistress Ruby, Mistress Sarah Jane, Mistress Emma, I am prohibiting you from serving the Dowager Princess any longer."
"Dowager Princess?" I ask.
"The three of you will transfer to Mistress Anne's household."
I look over at Catalina, and her eyes are sparkling with unshed tears. Her bottom lip quivers, but she quickly composes herself. However, when I look at Jane, I realise she is openly crying. "You cannot take them away from me," Catalina says.
"Emma did say her loyalty lies with the queen second, whoever that may be."
"Queen Katherine is still Queen because you have not annulled your marriage," I say. "Until that happens, we are not leaving her household."
"I am not requesting you to leave the Dowager Princess' household, I am ordering you."
"Too bad that you cannot command us. We are not your subjects."
"While you live in my reign, you are my subjects!"
I look over at my parents. There is nothing we can do to change his mind, so I climb down from my horse. Mum and Mummy follow me, and they start crying. "You will unpack your belongings and settle in," King Henry commands before he turns and walks away. The other ladies and Catalina help us get our trunks, and we move them back to our room at Court. Does Anne know we are staying? Probably not if King Henry just told us to move back in, and he is walking in the opposite direction to Anne's apartment.
When we return, Anne's head snaps up. "I thought you three were going with Queen Katherine. Did the King change his mind? Is she staying after all? Please say she is!" She jumps up and runs over to us.
"It's only us," I say. "I'm so sorry, Anne. It's only the three of us."
"But..." Tears fill Anne's eyes, and they begin to flow down her cheeks.
"King Henry commanded that we stayed. We couldn't fight him."
"But you are not from this time! Surely you can go after the Queen and still serve her!"
"The King has forbidden it."
"But Jane, Maggie, Joan, and Maria are still with her."
"At least Queen Katherine has some friends with her, and we will help you."
"But I want to..." Anne realises the other women who aren't in on our secret are watching us. She dries her eyes and turns to the others. "I am feeling tired. Mistress Sarah Jane, Mistress Ruby, Mistress Emma, will you help me turn in?"
"Of course, Lady Anne," Mummy says, and we follow her into her bedchamber and shut the door.
"It feels wrong without the others here," Anne says as she looks around the recently vacated room. "We should all be here, talking and laughing, preparing for the future."
"I know," I agree, "but it will only get worse."
"Once I'm gone, you three and Jane might be the only ones left."
"Not the only ones," I correct. "Joan is certainly there, but I don't think the others are. I think Joan leaves shortly after Jane dies."
"So, when wife number four arrives, it will just be the three of you?"
"We'll be back together within a couple of decades," I promise. At least I know I can keep that promise.
AN: That is book four of Emma's Six complete. I am a little stuck on book five, which I called The Reformation, so it might be some time before that comes out. However, I hope to post a Sarah Jane Adventures, Rainbow Magic, Twilight, and Titanic crossover book on Wattpad under the same username. If you have a Wattpad account, keep an eye out for that. I will try and start writing book five soon, but I cannot make any promises. I hope you enjoyed this book, and I will see you in the next one.
