I'm back with more 😚
Miyuki is now starting to develop more into her demonic side and acting like a toddler, I wanted to develop Kaede's priestess training a little. As well as how Kikyo and InuYasha are coping as parents. I'd love any suggestions you think would add to the story. I appreciate reviews and feedback
"Look mama, I have fangs! I look like papa!" Miyuki cried happily, opening her jaw wide to reveal her sharpened teeth, her jaw had been hurting for some time as her teeth came in. Crying, unable to eat and chewing things constantly, her mouth swollen and painful. Her mother made made medicinal tonics to ease her pains to make it easier, explaining it was a process that would eventually pass. But when she wasn't in pain, she took pride in the fact she had started teething. Ever since she met her uncle, ever since she had crossed paths with her mothers enemy, she had realised how many dangers were in the world. But she had begun to realise how many people were protecting her. Slowly learning about herself and recognising things in herself that her parents also displayed, her eyes bright and golden like her father. She was now two, now a toddler no longer needing constant carrying from her mother, though she still enjoyed it. Learning a sense of independence and developing her own personality, curious of the world around her. Unfortunately inheriting the name the demon princess of the village, while her parents called her their little snow princess. She was staring to show stronger resemblance to her parents, or most notably the demon heritage of her fathers lineage. Her eyes had become more feline like her mothers, their brownish gold hue turning pure amber when she was upset or angry. Though she was still learning to control the demon blood in herself, due to her young age, her parents were able to soothe her. Though the teething process hadn't been easy, Miyuki needing to chew things in order to cope with the pain. InuYasha often allowing her to gnaw on his fingers due to coping with the pain better, saying they felt like needle pricks rather than the pain it would cause a human. Now she was very proud of the baby fangs she was growing as she got older. Her previously shortish hair had grown out to reach her chest, having been cut into a hime style like her mother, but she had the same fluffy fringe as her father. Though she lacked his ears, which was a common ongoing joke. Many of the local villagers commented on how pretty she was, a mini Kikyo running around, expressing curiosity of what she would look like when she was older. Often seen in trees, the woodland area or pottering around the rice fields for frogs and other creatures, she enjoyed exploring her home.
Kikyo smiled, her daughter was growing fast, becoming a lovely young child, a sense of pride in knowing she would help nurture her daughter into the person she would someday become. Blessed with the fact compared to many Hanyou or other children, Miyuki was able to grow up with her family. The demon blood in her becoming stronger, she was far more agile than the other village children. She enjoyed foraging for mushrooms, berries and other interesting things, she enjoyed helping her mother gather medicinal herbs and joining her during visits to help other villagers. She also enjoyed playing with her father, tickling his ears and joining him on hunts for food. She was learning many things from those around her, things she would carry into adulthood and hopefully protect her as she got older.
Kaede had now been a trainee priestess for over a year, having celebrated her eighth birthday. Though she was younger than Kikyo when she became a priestess, it was a ritual that she would inevitably partake in. She had wanted this due to idolising Kikyo since she was little, but also inheriting spiritual powers herself. She now discarded her previous village kimono for white priestess attire, people praising her for following in her sisters footsteps. She still wore an eyepatch after the injury she suffered, worried it would scare her niece to see such an injury, having a nasty scar across her eye where she was shot. But Miyuki never looked at her differently, merely asking if it hurt and if she could see ok, becoming angry and her eyes glowing if someone made fun of her auntie. Kaede's view of demons had changed immensely since InuYasha became her brother-in-law, realising how much he loved her sister. Realising that not all demons were monsters like Mistress centipede or all the other demons she had met. Though she admitted that Sesshoumaru was a jerk but he was softening due to being an uncle. Kaede would still babysit if Kikyo had to leave the village for work, explaining to Miyuki of what to expect when she became old enough to train as a priestess. Despite being so young she had become a teacher, no longer carefree as she was before. Teaching Miyuki like a mentor while also enjoying playing with her, lessons of balancing her spiritual essence and demon blood, of the weapons she would use to fight demons. She knew Miyuki would face hardship all her life, the life she would be expected to lead as someone who would battle wicked demons and entities. Demons would see her as a traitor for fighting other demons, while seeing her as an enemy for fighting demonkind. Humans would be untrustworthy of her due to her demon blood and worry she would become corrupt. Knowing her uncle would never accept a weakling as part of his bloodline, no matter their familial relations.
InuYasha had officially become co-guardian of the village, the forest had become his land which he drove demons from, lacking the castle his father and brother had, but he never enjoyed the life of being a snobby lord. He had found the place he belonged with no desire to ever leave or change, protecting his daughter, wife and sister in law from danger. He had become the role model to his daughter, the one he wished his own father had been. Though he had never known his father, he had heard stories of him, how influential he was and how many people had loved and admired him. Wishing his mother could have met Miyuki, she would have doted on her granddaughter and spoiled her rotten. He had expected the changes in which Miyuki would face as a hybrid, though she aged the same way a human child would, she would stop ageing around the age of eighteen like all demon hybrids, though her life would be vastly shorter than his own or a full demon. He was fiercely protective of her, driving off any attempt of villagers to bully and mock her for any reason, the same way he had been suspicious of Sesshoumaru. Glaring from a distance or making sarcastic comments that would make people wary of upsetting his daughter. Being so young she wouldn't understand the malice that people would say about her, but she would understand it was bad from her parents reactions. He wanted to shield her from that for as long as possible.
But what scared him most of all was the enemies that would come after him, just like his fathers enemies had come after himself and Sesshoumaru to which they defeated him. Tsubaki had already made it obvious she considered Kikyo a rival and had tried to attack Miyuki last year, something he didn't want repeated. Sesshoumaru and himself had made enemies in the past, which would come after Miyuki as revenge, he couldn't let that happen. He wouldn't allow a familial repeat of someone coming after his daughter due to his past mistakes. In which he had forged the KuraiTsuki from Sesshoumaru's fang, infusing it with not only his brothers blood but his and Kikyo's, a blade capable of protecting Miyuki as she got older. She would need to learn how to use it, wield it and channel its power, but that was a long way off yet. Labelling it the Dark Moon fang, or Dark Moon Blade, designing the handle to the shape of a moon, like the symbol on her grandfather and uncle's foreheads. Using black fur on the handle like his Tetsuigha, using moons around the base and the blade itself having a crystal sheath, designed with cracks and lines expected of such a design. The powers the blade would hold someday were unknown as of yet, but he'd been checking in with the design.
Myoga and Totosai had arranged for another robe of the fire rat and a ribbon to be made for Miyuki as a form of armour when she became a priestess. She was weaker than her father and wouldn't heal from wounds as quickly as he would. Now that she was a toddler, InuYasha decided to share with Miyuki of her family heritage, though he was wary of how much he told her as to not upset her. But she needed to understand where she came from, as she would hear stories throughout her life. Her late grandmother Izayoi whom had been a princess who fell in love with his demon general warlord father Touga, choosing her as his mate and marrying her in secret. Explaining their love story and how her grandfather perished to save his wife, which Sesshoumaru had resented him for ever since. How Izayoi raised him, her knowledge of medicine and happier memories of his childhood, Myoga had told her stories of her grandfather, but due to her young age avoided any that may traumatise her in some way. Expressing his joy that Miyuki resembled her grandmother, of how lovely she was and what kind of woman she would be as she got older. She had learned that her father had inherited the Tetsuigha her grandfathers sword, while Sesshoumaru had inherited the Tenseigha. InuYasha often having to swat the old flea away due to his newfound love of Miyuki's blood, expressing its sweetness due to her DaiYokai blood, but also her mothers delicate flavour as a potent priestess. Miyuki was less irritated by it than her father, the flea becoming like a grandfather to her. But she did often wonder why her father disliked Myoga so much.
"Remember Miyuki, no biting people, that's mean and it might make someone cry. Only use your teeth to nibble papa if they hurt or on scary people who want to hurt you" InuYasha reminded her. He knew that Miyuki may become upset and bite people as a response when they were mean, but that would hurt them. He knew people were already distrustful of her and would weaponise it against her. He'd grown up being the freak, the monster, the half breed, all the awful things people had said about him his whole life. He wouldn't let that happen to Miyuki if he could help it.
"Yes papa" Miyuki nodded, she twirled happily as she skipped around the hut, happily adorning her homemade kimono from her parents, a bright yellow kimono decorated in maple leaves, matching her eyes. Chanting to herself about her fangs. The yellow of the material matched her eyes, she was like pure sunshine and she appeared adorable. He'd done some trading to gather it, giving it to her as a present. He could see how happy it made her and that was all that mattered to him.
"InuYasha, I need to visit Kaede and see how her training is coming along, I'll be back in the evening, would you mind watching Miyuki for the day?" Kikyo pressed. She was worried about her sister, they had been together their whole lives and being apart was a big change for them both. She didn't want to interrupt Kaede's training too much, but she didn't want to isolate her and make her feel abandoned either. Kaede had been her responsibility since their parents had passed, she loved her dearly and would never stop caring about her. If she took a horse she would be able to get back faster, thus easing InuYasha's worry for her wellbeing.
InuYasha smiled, turning his attention to Miyuki "Hey Miyuki, it's going to be a papa and daughter day, will you be good while mama is gone?" he asked. He worried about Kikyo being alone, being his mate meant she had a target on her back more than ever. He remembered the night they crossed paths when he was a human, how exhausted she had been and how she collapsed. He didn't want her falling into that same state. Now that she was a mother and a wife, her wellbeing mattered more than ever. But he wouldn't show that to his daughter, he would ease her worries and make sure she was entertained and happy.
"YAAAY, I get to play with papa!" Miyuki cheered, would he take her to forage for mushrooms? Would he teach her to hunt or would they play hide and seek? Her father always made her laugh, he enjoyed playing with her. He never got upset when she played with his ears, always careful never to pull too hard. He let her ride on his shoulders, sometimes she would fall asleep on him. She would always become bashful when approached by someone, hiding behind her father for safety. She carried profuse love for her family, very attached to them and rarely seen away from them.
"Will you be a good girl?" InuYasha smirked, Miyuki was the most well behaved child in the village and was known for her sweet nature. But he always reminded her as to ease his mate and assure Miyuki had good manners. Though she was still a toddler, he was heavily preparing for the future ahead of her so she would always be protected. The last thing he wanted was for her to ever come to harm. He was slowly realising that Miyuki may have a telepathic link much like Kikyo had, allowing her to share her thoughts and communicate with her parents. Though much like her demon powers it was triggered by her emotions.
"I will" she agreed, she knew that if she did something bad she would get into trouble and she didn't want that. She didn't want her mother to worry as she knew she would be busy. She knew it would make her parents happy if she behaved so she would try her best to be a good girl. Kikyo softened, smiling in amusement.
InuYasha approached, cupping Kikyo's head and stroking her hair affectionately between his fingers, breathing in her scent, "She'll be fine Kikyo, I won't let anyone hurt our baby" he promised. He knew as a new mother, Miyuki being their firstborn, she would have worries and issues with being apart from her daughter. But she had nothing to fear, he wouldn't let her wander nor would he allow anyone to hurt her. The village would be safe with him to protect it, he knew Kikyo felt responsible but this took priority, she was allowed to be selfish. If he was willing to threaten his brother over Miyuki, whatever random demon got any funny ideas would be toast, they wouldn't be alive to see the next day. He'd make them regret coming after his child.
Kikyo smiled, her cheeks flushing pink but a love bubbling in her chest, she loved how safe she felt with him, she loved how sincere he was, knowing how to ease her worries and never belittle her for her concerns. He never lied to her, he never put on false airs with her and he was always sincere. They had become more comfortable sharing their feelings with one another. He knew how much she loved their baby, she knew how much she hated to be apart from her so young, something he sincerely admired and loved. He supported her and she greatly appreciated it. "I'll be home as soon as I can" she soothed
Kikyo grabbed her straw cape which she wrapped around her tightly now that the weather was getting cooler again, she placed her kasa atop her head and assured she had her bow and arrow in case of danger. Taking the shell of her mother in law which InuYasha had gifted her shortly after they met. Colouring her lips with rouge, her brown eyes intense and wary. She comforted her horse, making sure the saddle was in place, the reins weren't too tight and the horse was calm. They had a long way to go. The villagers came to see her off, wishing her well and a safe return from her journey. Miyuki gripped her mothers leg tightly, her eyes filled with worry "Be safe mama" she mumbled sadly, her mother hadn't left the village alone before. Papa always went with her but now that auntie Kaede had gone into training her parents shared duties. She didn't like the idea of her mother going alone even being so powerful. What if she got hurt or lost and couldn't find home. Part of her wanted to go with her mother so she would be safe, but she knew she couldn't do that.
Kikyo knelt and Miyuki swiftly jumped into her arms, nuzzling against her mother happily "Papa will take good care of you, you just be a good girl and wait for me to come home. He'll help you train and you can forage for mushrooms while I'm gone" she smiled. Saying goodbye to Miyuki was the hardest, enjoying the way her daughter smelled, so soft and warm. She soothed her daughter so she would feel calm and know she would be safe. She just needed to wait for her and she would return to them both. She wondered what mischief her husband and child would get up to while she was gone, the stories she would hear from the villagers. She smiled at the thought, knowing they had fun.
"I'll get some for you too so you can enjoy them when you get back" Miyuki grinned, she knew her mother was a good cook and enjoyed when she brought gifts home. Due to her sense of smell she could tell when something was poisonous or not, sometimes they made good soup or could be dried for flavour. She knew that the foraging would come in handy for when her mother was making medicine, able to indicate which herbs from another by their scent. She knew the long journey would leave her mother hungry and tired, what if a bad person tried to hurt her like the one her uncle saved her from?
"Thank you" Kikyo smiled, kissing her daughters head fondly, lowering her to the ground as she prepared her horse.
InuYasha scooped up Miyuki before approaching her with a concerned expression "If you bump into Tsubaki along the way, give her hell..." he smiled. He knew that Kikyo resented Tsubaki due to attacking her daughter, their previous rivalry one sided. But after making an attempt on her daughters life it had become mutual, wondering when the dark priestess would make herself known again. He knew Sesshoumaru was keeping a close eye on them these days much to his displeasure, but he called it duty.
"If she attempts something again after this long I'll be surprised" Kikyo laughed, Tsubaki knew that if she tried anything against her daughter again, she would kill her. Kikyo had had always spared others, even enemies if she felt they could be redeemed or weren't worth killing. But since becoming a mother she would do anything and everything to protect her family. She approached her husband, placing her hand on his chest and kissing him affectionately, Miyuki watching them with curious eyes. Before heading along the long path towards the temple and away from the village. InuYasha and Miyuki watched her leave, a sense of sadness in their hearts.
Miyuki gripping her fathers robe tightly, she felt a sense of fear watching her mother leave. It didn't feel right and her mind worried that something bad would happen "Mama will be ok won't she?" she pressed. Holding back the urge to chase after her mother and hide on the horse to go with her. She had to be a good girl, she had to behave, she didn't want to get into trouble.
InuYasha smiled reminiscing on old times, KIkyo was tougher than she looked and it was one of the reasons he fell in love with her. Under the mask of proficiency, bravery and leadership, she was lonely. Kikyo had never felt happiness until they found one another. The loneliness she had once felt had never bothered her again "Hey Miyuki, did you know when papa and mama met, she pinned papa to a tree?" he explained. He remembered when he heard the story of the shikon jewel, becoming obsessed with gaining its power to become a full demon. Kikyo was the protector back then and harassed her to no end. Her aim had been scary and admittedly he'd been a little afraid of her, while respecting her power. Looking back on the story, it amused them both to no end thinking about how much they had grown since.
Miyuki directed her gaze to him, her eyes bright and full of curiosity "Mama shot you?" she asked. She could never think of her mother harming her father, they loved each other very much and never fought. Sometimes they argued or had intense conversations but neither had ever argued negatively. It felt so odd to think of her parents that way.
InuYasha laughed "Na, mama loves me too much for that, but she shot her arrows into my robe and I got stuck. I'm sure if any mean demons try to hurt her, she'll just use her arrows on them" he soothed. Kikyo could have killed him that day if she wanted, he was pinned, unable to escape and at her mercy. The same way he could have left her to die that night when she collapsed after fighting demons. They trusted one another, understood one another, but that didn't mean they didn't know how to get under one another's skin. He knew how to tease Kikyo, which often got her flustered.
Miyuki blinked as she processed this information "Mama's really scary" she reflected
InuYasha nodded, Kikyo had a reputation as a priestess for a reason, she had earned it. She still had many enemies and adversaries who considered her a threat. But he respected her immensely as a woman, hell she'd earned Sesshoumaru's respect which wasn't easily done. "She can be, but mama also loves us very much, just like you love us. And you'd hurt someone who tried to hurt mama right?" he asked. Kikyo had protected this village all her life, it was her home, she made sure no demons ever harmed the village. Even bandits knew she was a threat and steered clear, his presence just increased it. But now it was the home of her family, she had more to protect, more at risk.
Miyuki nodded adamantly "Hai!"
Kaede sat inside the temple in silence, her fingers formed into the prayer symbol, channeling her ki and spiritual power with all of her concentration. Remembering everything her older sister had told her, that her power came from within, that it flowed through her like water. Her powers were affected by her emotions, the stronger the emotion, the more powerful the priestess. However, the heavier the influence of the emotion, the weaker the control over said powers. If a priestess allowed her emotions to consume her, her powers effectiveness would be tarnished. Allowing her enemies to overpower her and ultimately kill her. Having to be away from home for so long, the adamant weeks of training, enhancing her power, it wasn't easy. She missed her family, she missed her sister, she missed her brother in-law and young niece. All of those things weaned her powers, so she had to calm herself and remember what was at stake, those who were relying on her. Now she had a bigger respect for Kikyo than ever, Kikyo had been her age when she became a priestess, raising herself while learning to wield her powers and protect their home. At least now she could alleviate the responsibility from Kikyo slightly and act as her ally. Learning to wield the bow and arrow more efficiently for battle, trusting in her instincts, gut feeling and all the lessons she had been taught. Such as the sealing arrow Kikyo used, as well as many other forms of magic. The sense of jealousy she had subconsciously formed towards her sister, believing she would always be in her shadow in comparison. Which she had learned to overcome by understanding her value. Finding courage and strength within herself, no longer comparing herself to Kikyo and finding her own abilities. She would never be Kikyo but then the same went for any other priestess, no spiritual power was alike, nobody was ever the same. Their potential, powers and skills differed on each girl. There were priestesses who had powers that Kikyo didn't and vice versa. Tsubaki was the only known dark priestess on the continent.
Her life was changing so much, she could barely recognise the girl she used to be, looking in the mirror and seeing a stranger. It was hard to believe it had been a whole year since Kikyo and InuYasha were married, mated and had a daughter. They had formed a bigger family, a different life, bringing two different worlds together. Now she had newfound responsibility, she had become an auntie to a quarter demon that would look to her for guidance. The distrust and hostility she had once shown demon-kind had altered, realising that not all demons were evil. There would still be wicked and malicious demons out there, but good ones like her niece and InuYasha also existed. However, she had also met bad demons, realising that they could be beautiful, luring in naive prey with their disguise. Taking advantage of the naivety of humans, she had met her secondary brother in law, whom she was still distrustful of. Sesshoumaru had been keeping his distance as of late, though stories of him still reached their village. InuYasha's handler Myoga would bring them stories of what the demon lord was up to on his travels.
Miyuki was growing up fast, her demonic blood becoming stronger and curious of the world around her, learning of how people perceived her and what to expect from others. Due to her weakened demon blood she was able to blend in easier than a half demon, but her visibly demonic traits and inhuman beauty was apparent. Making people wary of her. Kikyo and InuYasha were obviously protective of her due to this, InuYasha having experience of bigotry due to his demon blood and he didn't want his daughter to endure the same treatment. Kikyo's education on demons had been altered after falling in love with InuYasha, and understanding his view of the world. Understanding that not all demons were bad and not all humans were good. Tsubaki had since backed off after her attempt on Miyuki's life and Sesshoumaru's threat, but she still harboured bitterness towards Kikyo. The jewel which she coveted had been destroyed from existence after Kikyo made the wish for the jewel's influence to disappear from the world. Kikyo had become stronger via her powers since childbirth and falling in love with a Hanyou. Her emotions empowering her rather than weakening her. Tsubaki was now cursed that Kikyo had deflected and redirected at her, forced to wear an eyepatch and hide the scars from the incident. Kikyo's only grudge against Tsubaki was harassing her daughter and family, rather than the one sided rivalry of the latter.
Kaede knew she couldn't rely on her sister for protection as much as she used to, she had other priorities and Kaede would have to learn responsibility. Her injury had fully healed but she now had a scar across her eye, impairing her previous vision and forced to wear an eyepatch. Kikyo still harboured guilt despite it being an accident, but Kaede ensured her she held no resentment towards her. She still on occasion visited Miuki and helped her with training and such, telling them stories of what she had missed while she had been away. However, Kaede couldn't ignore her training and the village would cope with her being away. She was mostly residing at the temple, while training she worked for her room and board, helping with meals, cleaning the temple and other tasks. Donations from villagers were greatly appreciated, as it helped with her schooling. She tried to write as much as possible to keep in contact with her family, though Miyuki's slowly developing telepathy made communication easier. Having inherited the spiritual gift from Kikyo, which Kaede wondered if she had inherited too.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps behind her, slowly opening her eyes to acknowledge them "Kaede, your sister has informed us she will be visiting" the priest explained calmly. She had travelled a long way from the village by horse, putting her duties on hold to check on her sister. Her presence was greatly welcomed due to being such a highly regarded priestess.
Kaede smiled to herself, it seemed Kikyo had missed her as much as she had. They could have privacy to discuss things and reminisce on old times. More than anything she wanted to make her sister proud and prove her potential. "Arigato, I appreciate that" she replied, finishing her prayer and getting to her feet. They had a lot to discuss.
Kikyo sat opposite Kaede, it had only been a year and so much had changed, Kaede would be training for another three years, by that time she would be eleven years old. Becoming a fully fledged priestess ready to protect other villages. Remembering her own difficult journey of training and how much it had changed her life. She had raised Kaede herself after their parents passed, it had been the two of them for so long, it felt so strange seeing her grow up. A bittersweet sense of pride and yet sadness, knowing Kaede was becoming strong in her own right, yet wouldn't rely on her as much as she used to. "You appear well Kaede, the priest has informed me you're learning quickly. It seems my lessons rubbed off on you" she smiled. She had taught Kaede herself when it came to archery, giving her the upperhand where other priestesses wouldn't. However, everything else she would need to learn alone.
Kaede smirked "I learned from the best" she chuckled, she admired Kikyo for a reason, everything she knew she had learned from Kikyo. She was the best teacher she could ask for her and would become the same mentor to her daughter. She knew people would compare her to Kikyo, that people would ask about her when Kaede became a fully fledged priestess. But to her she would always be family, she would always be her big sister and nothing more. Only she knew about the struggles, hardships, conflict and insecurities that Kikyo struggled with, only she saw Kikyo at her most human.
"Miyuki misses you, she asks about you and when you will next be visiting" she reflected, she didn't like her family separating or being apart. Being so young she didn't like such big changes in her life, Kaede had been there since she was born. Kaede had helped look after her when Kikyo was forced to travel to a village to fight demons or aid the sick or wounded. Kaede had told her stories or fed her, she was family. Now that she was a toddler, she was used to Kaede being a constant in her life, rather than moving away to train.
Kaede softened, she knew Miyuki would be facing bullying and ostracising as a toddler, she would be showing more demon traits. Not all of the villagers approved of InuYasha or his marriage to Kikyo. Many believing he'd corrupted Kikyo and the child they bore was proof of that. "I can't believe she's already two years old, she must look so much like you" she hummed. Luckily she would always have someone on her side to look out for her, people who would protect her and help her navigate life, but it would be anything but easy for her. When Miyuki was born she had her fathers eyes strongly, now they changed to his colour when her demon powers activated. Now she was older she would have his fangs, claws and her mothers sharp eyes. But she would strongly exhibit her demon blood compared to children her age.
"She has InuYasha's curiosity, she loves to get into mischief just like him. But she's very bashful of the other children, but she's always so mild mannered with everyone. She loves picking herbs and mushrooms" Kikyo reminisced. She was eager to understand the world around her, which as a future priestess would enable her efficiency. She loved exploring her home village and educating herself on anything she found. She wasn't good at forming friendships yet, but she harboured a sense of longing and loneliness, the desire for connection. But she enjoyed foraging in her free time, helping her mother with medicine.
Kaede sniggered, she could imagine Miyuki getting into trouble just like InuYasha. Miyuki wasn't like the other children, but that was a good thing, the world needed more variety. "I bet the villagers love that, I bet she sneaks vegetables all the time. Another little demon in the village, troublemaker..."she trailed off. She knew not all the villagers were ignorant, hateful and paranoid, many were warm natured, welcoming and kind. "She's not... she's not being bullied is she?" she asked hesitantly. She knew that bullying was the one thing that both Kikyo and InuYasha worried about after her pregnancy was confirmed. How their baby would be treated by everyone else.
Kikyo frowned, it had already started by the time Miyuki was an infant, and it wouldn't stop as she got older. "Some... she's been accepted by mostly everyone, due to their respect for myself and InuYasha. But some ways cannot be changed, Miyuki's demon blood scares them. They avoid her, stare at her, watch her" she stated in a pained tone. She had seen villagers whispering and muttering amongst themselves about Miyuki, due to her child's enhanced hearing she would overhear it. Often glaring at villagers or gathering Miyuki in her arms and covering her ears. When they weren't gossiping about her, they would leave when they saw her coming, pretend to be occupied or busy. They would intimidate her by staring at them, causing her to become upset or leave, other times they would watch her as she explored the village, observing and talking amongst themselves.
"They haven't hurt her have they?" Kaede insisted, she knew InuYasha had been bullied by his brother growing up, even when he was a child. He had faced many wounds and injuries from protecting himself from enemies. Humans would do the same to any half demon, let alone a quarter breed. So long as Miyuki had demon blood she would never be accepted by others. The thought of them harming Miyuki in some way while she was a child, it angered her deeply. Miyuki was her niece and she would do anything to protect her.
Kikyo laughed, no matter how tempted they were, it wouldn't happen. Sesshoumaru had ensured nobody would trespass in the territory, leaving his scent everywhere to ward off other demons. InuYasha was a fiercely protective father and kept his daughter close. Everyone was aware of how strong he was and wouldn't touch her. "InuYasha watches her like a hawk, with how scary he looks at them or his passive threats, I doubt they would lay a hand on her". Even if the village was his home and he'd been accepted, he knew that hatred and ignorance would always follow.
Kaede snorted, given how much InuYasha loved her sister, he would convey that same love to their child. Miyuki was rarely seen away from her papa and followed him around like a shadow "She's a daddy's girl" she teased. InuYasha had never known his own father due to him passing away before he was born, only hearing about the stories his brother and Myoga told him. InuYasha knew Miyuki had imprinted onto him and looked to him for guidance. She would share stories of her father when she was older and live in his shadow. InuYasha had a sword made for her preparing for when she came of age, just like he had. He wanted her to be safe and loved, all the things he never had as a father so she would never be lonely.
Kikyo nodded "InuYasha has been telling her stories of her grandmother, sharing tales of his adolescence and helping her navigate the world. Now that her demonic traits are becoming more prominent he's shielding her from harm more than ever. We just want her to be safe". Kikyo knew Izayoi had been the most important person in his life, the first person to love and accept him as a half breed. Losing her had broken his heart, losing his protection when she died. Legally by birth he was a lord, a prince; the son of a Demon Lord General and a human princess, but the world wouldn't see it that way. Izayoi would have doted on her grandchildren if she could, proud of her son for finding the love he had always wanted. As parents, they needed to protect Miyuki until she was old enough to protect herself.
Kaede hardened, she couldn't understand the hatred towards Miyuki, while the fear of demons was understandable, she had never done anything to prove people's fear. "She's a toddler, stronger than the average one yes but she's still a child. She would never hurt anyone" she scoffed. Just like her father she was part human, more human than him, she was fully emotional, empathetic. Capable of perceiving emotions the same as anyone, but due to her demon blood people wouldn't see it that way. She would always be seen as the monster purely because of her father, because of the fact that they had bad experiences with demons. They refused to see her as anything other than the enemy.
"We know that, many villagers insist they are aware of this. But you cannot stop people from being hateful, InuYasha and I expected this when we fell in love. The line between demons and humans will always exist" she sighed. Many villagers had sent their blessings and even donations to the temple and their home since the birth of Miyuki. Accepting her as a future priestess and member of the village. Some had even given Kikyo or Miyuki small gifts, which she was always grateful for. But Kikyo knew that their love would always be taboo to someone else, no matter how they felt. Humans and demons had been enemies since the beginning of time, it was a painful reality they both had grown up with and so would their daughter.
"Sis, you always put your work first, you focused on nothing but protecting others your whole life. After InuYasha, you found peace, you felt whole, you had the chance to be selfish and have a normal life. You're a mother now not just a priestess. Miyuki's your daughter, she will always come first, she's part of you and him. All that matters is how you feel" Kaede insisted. As much as she admired Kikyo for her strength, dedication and duty as a priestess, the same as everyone else, admiring her sisters beauty. Kikyo had always been lonely, as if something from her life was missing. Once she met InuYasha that loneliness eased away, feeling whole and content with her life. She had seen her older sister blossom and she was proud of her. It didn't matter what everyone else thought, how they felt and what they wanted, this had been Kikyo's choice to make and she didn't owe them that explanation.
Kikyo softened, Kaede had truly matured and it was showing, her training and relationship with her newfound family was rubbing off on her. She had truly come to love InuYasha and Miyuki as family. When she became a priestess herself, she may befriend, protect and even form alliances with other demons, half breeds and more. She wouldn't have the same ignorance and hatred for demons like everyone else. "I'm proud of you Kaede".
"Y'know I still find it funny how you found your husband, you shot him to a tree because he was trying to steal from you. Leading to you getting married and having a kid together" she teased. Kikyo had been dedicated to her role, discarding, love, happiness and repressing her emotions which made her stronger. Her soul was pure, selfless and perfect, as expected of a priestess. However, she diverted her path upon meeting InuYasha, briefly weakening her powers as she fell in love. But after mating with him, marrying him and bearing his child, instead of weakening her powers only increased. She became stronger, more than she ever had been previously. Not matching the legacy of Midoriko, but her powers were close to that potential.
Kikyo blushed, she remembered the first night she crossed paths with him, on his human night. He preserved her life, while she returned the gesture out of good will. Over time they were drawn to one another and fell in love. Upon reflection it was certainly an amusing tale "We were enemies back then" she protested. She had no idea of what to assume of InuYasha, given he was always hostile and moody with her. But over time she learned it was just a shield he used to protect himself, hiding his weakness from others.
"Yeah but we all know how kind you are, you could have killed him and you never did. It was love at first sight" Kaede grinned. Kikyo had shown her true colours even back then, she never killed InuYasha no matter how many times he harassed her, merely pinning him or intimidating him to back off. When she sensed him nearby, she always asked him to join her or accompany her, such as when she observed the village or was playing with children. Over time he became comfortable with accepting her offers allowing them to become closer. Kikyo slowly opened her heart to him and even asked if he had ever considered becoming fully human. However, instead accepted him fully, marrying him as a half demon. Fate brought them together, the red string of fate binding them, leading to their life together.
"I was ignorant, the stories I'd heard about demons caused me to believe they were all evil, wicked and corrupt. But through meeting InuYasha I changed for the better" she reflected. Kikyo was ashamed of the person she used to be, proud of herself for her growth and education. Now that she understood her husbands struggles, as well as the struggles her daughter would face, it made her stronger. She wanted to create a safer world for her daughter, for her husband, for future hybrids. She wanted to prepare her daughter for the dangers she would face. Not everyone would accept her as a priestess, and not everyone would accept her as a person.
"And in turn he became a simp and a house husband" Kaede cackled, InuYasha's only weakness was Kikyo, he followed her around like a shadow and made sure she came to no harm. If he so much as heard whisper that she was sick, struggling or in some form of trouble, he ran to her side. Kikyo was the most important woman in his life and that would never change. He'd gone from a fiercely independent loner to a married family man, moving past his desire to live alone to living with people who loved him. Such as when he gifted Kikyo his mothers rouge, showing how much he cared for her.
Kikyo flicked her head "Honestly, since when did you get so cheeky" she chuckled
InuYasha wandered around the village, Miyuki walking beside him while clinging to his trousers. Now that he was sole protector of the village while Kikyo was away, he had to be extra vigilant. Making sure that nobody had been hurt, was seriously ill, no accidents and no attacks. He was good at helping people carry their grains of their carts were damaged, helping villagers to their homes and so forth. However Miyuki stayed close to him, wary of the villagers. She could feel eyes on her, but she tried to pay them no mind while her papa was around, keeping her head low, remembering to be polite and considering that many were not as mean as others. She meant no harm and she hadn't done anything wrong, she knew her father would protect her and scare off any bullies. Plenty of villagers had brought offerings to their home, temple and even given her treats sometimes, many praised her for being so special. How she would be the village priestess someday, discussing her mother and future. Her gaze fell upon some children, kicking a ball around happily, sharing laughter and arguments between them as they played. Miyuki watched them with bright eyed curiosity, it looked fun, a sense of longing filled her. She wanted to have fun too, but what if they didn't like her, what if they were scared of her. She'd never spent time with anyone aside from her parents, she'd never strayed away from them.
InuYasha acknowledged that his daughter wanted to play, the same way as a child he had wanted to play ball, but when he caught it, they all scattered and left him by himself. Miyuki was of the age where she wanted to socialise with other people, forming friendships and bonds. He didn't want her to grow up isolated and lonely, he wanted to encourage friendships where possible. The village children were aware of her, they knew about her, she was part of the village as much as they were. "Miyuki, do you want to play?" he asked.
Miyuki nodded, but she gripped his leg tightly "But... what if they don't like me?" she asked. What if they said something mean to her? What if they threw things at her and chased her away? She didn't want them to pull her hair, hurt her or call her names. She would rather avoid them than get hurt. As much as she wanted to play and have fun with them, she didn't want to be bullied, she didn't want to hear the same mean things adults said about her. She'd rather spend time with her papa and help him than be by herself and lonely. She knew people thought her eyes looked strange, that people would notice her fangs and claws, even though they were normal. People didn't like her, so why would they ever want to be friends?
InuYasha hummed, his daughter wariness was justified and her fear of being judged even more so. But where he could nurture her life for the better he could. He knew some children in the village had crushes on his daughter, due to her demonic beauty. But he needed Miyuki to understand from his point of view that there was nothing wrong with her and never would be "Miyuki, you don't think papa is scary do you?" he asked. Miyuki would never think of him as frightening, she would never look at him as a monster, nor would he feel the same about her.
Miyuki stared at him accusingly, a look of shock and anger on her face "No! Papa isn't scary, you're the best papa ever" she insisted. He always gave her warm hugs, he let her ride on his shoulders and he kept her safe. He scared off mean people, he helped her search for food and he loved mama very much. He let her play with his ears and never complained if she pulled too hard. When she had been teething he let her bite him even if it hurt. He always told her very cool stories about his life, about her grandparents and about her powers. He told her about how much he loved mama and how they both loved her very much. She couldn't think about how anyone would ever think her papa was scary or mean.
InuYasha smiled, seeing Miyuki get sulky and defensive never failed to make him smile. That streak of himself shining through her "And you aren't scary either, you're just different, but not everyone will like that. You can always ask, but if they are mean, papa will protect you" he soothed. She was the most loving child he had ever met, she always wanted to help others and very well behaved. Sure she had tantrums on occasion but she was a toddler, it was expected. Given she'd been attacked before she would be on her guard and cautious. She only snapped at others when she was deeply angered, much like himself, often insulting them. He'd found himself close to tears from laughter when she had called elderly villagers stupid because they insulted her papa.
Miyuki nodded, bashfully watching the children before mustering up her courage and approaching, gripping her Kimono for comfort as she hesitantly came forward. She wasn't good at talking to people and she was worried about saying the wrong thing. She watched the children hesitantly, she could feel herself trembling with fear. The echoing sounds of their footsteps, the ground beneath their feet, their screams of joy, the rustle of the leaves, all of it ringing in her ears. The ball suddenly rolled towards her, to which Miyuki froze, scared to touch it, gazing at the bright red colour, matching her papa's robes. One of the children gazed at her, watching her as if to attempting to predict what she would do next. Miyuki swallowed, not daring to move in case they hated her, she didn't want to do something wrong that would lead them to say something mean. Aware her father was watching from nearby, but she didn't want to run away, she didn't want to ask him for help so soon. "M... My name is Miyuki" she mumbled
One of the children blinked, approaching Miyuki curiously while keeping eye contact, staring her down with curiosity. He'd heard Lady Kikyo had a baby, but nobody had ever seen her in person before. Now that he'd met her he realised she was different than the other children "You have funny eyes" he stated bluntly. They were an abnormal colour, he'd never seen anyone with such yellowish eyes.
Miyuki stiffened, she knew people would express to her mother how they appeared strange when she was an infant. Her genes of her fathers golden eyes and mothers deep brown forming into a tiger eye appearance. She couldn't change them, nor could she make them any different, she fiddled with her fringe shyly "Papa... and mama like them" she stammered.
"Are you going to steal our ball?" another asked, demons always liked to steal things from villagers, such as food and other things. Would she do the same? Probably because she thought she could get away with it.
Miyuki shook her head adamantly, she had enough clothes from her parents, she didn't have any toys but she found amusement by herself. She had never wanted to steal anything from anyone. She felt tears prickling her eyes but she refused to cry, did they hate her already? Even though she hadn't done anything. Was this what they meant when they told her people would treat her differently because of her demon blood? InuYasha watched from the background, listening intently, a low growl emitting from his lips. He felt himself taken back to his own childhood, the same cruel words of ignorance from humans. Now these kids were judging his daughter and they barely knew her, history repeating itself. So far she had introduced herself and hadn't done anything to engage a fight, nor had she been actively hurt. He was so proud of how brave she was being, standing her ground and defending herself, without lashing out at them. But he was glaring, prepared to scare off these kids if it got worse. "I... I wanna... play... I want to... can I join in?" she asked shyly.
"You're being mean her eyes aren't weird" another child responded, her eyes were the same colour as Lord InuYasha, at least a little bit. He wasn't mean, he wasn't evil, he was very kind if not somewhat grumpy. She couldn't help the way she looked, she had inherited some of it from her father.
"She's lady Kikyo's daughter" another mentioned, she was going to be a future priestess someday just like Lady Kikyo and Lady Kaede, he needed to be more respectful. Yes she had demon powers but she also had spiritual powers like Lady Kikyo, so she wasn't a bad person at all. He was just being stupid.
"Eh? This girl with funny eyes is Lady Kikyo's daughter?" the same boy asked, he knew Lady Kikyo got married and had a baby, but only the adults spoke about her. Said she was pretty but she was strange looking. Aside from her eyes, small fangs and claws, she didn't look any different from anyone else, maybe her eyes were a little sharper. But she looked like a normal girl. He thought demons were supposed to be scary looking.
InuYasha sighed he was going to have to say something, this kid was the ringleader, though the other kids were welcoming, obviously if he said no they had to listen. He'd have to intimidate him for his daughter to be included. "You kids worried she'll beat you? Scared to lose?" he scoffed. Though she was stronger and faster than the other children, Miyuki had never used these powers to bully other children. She had an advantage but she was no cheater. The kids stiffened, noticing InuYasha watching them from nearby with scary eyes.
Miyuki pouted defensively, she was glad her papa was defending her but she was hurt they would assume the worst of her so soon. She couldn't help having these powers "I won't cheat" she argued. She would be able to find the ball if they lost it, she would be able to play longer than them due to stamina. If she got hurt she would heal faster than them, none of those were bad things. Assuming that she would take advantage by cheating and trying to beat them was mean, she could say the same about them.
"Let her play" one of the kids argued, the boy relented and allowed Miyuki to join them.
InuYasha smiled as he watched his daughter join the children to play ball, relieved nothing bad happened, though he was surprised so many of the other children stood up for her. But then many of the children had become attached to Kikyo and played with her, thus they would recognise Kikyo in Miyuki. He was proud of Miyuki for standing her ground and not backing down, her stubbornness shining through. But in the end it paid off and she was able to play ball with the other children. The same fear of what happened to himself as a child frightened him, the painful words he grew up with still lingered in his heart. That despite Miyuki being weaker in demonic blood, she would still be ostracised for it. She would always be different.
Kikyo wandered down the mountain, a sense of content in her heart and relief, the visit had been very comforting and reassured her that her sister was coping better than she expected. Kaede was doing fine, albeit slightly homesick and exhausted from training, but she was finding her feet, but then the first year was always the hardest. Her skills in archery were far more efficient, though she still had a long way to go due to her vision being impaired. Kikyo still felt guilty that her sisters future had been damaged due to her poor aim, maybe if her arrow had missed her, Kaede wouldn't have struggled so much. She was becoming stronger in barriers and her spiritual power though not as great as her sisters was becoming potent, soon she would be learning sutra magic, spells and other powers. The strain on her body would be immense, putting herself through great mental strain in order to become her strongest self. She would become a priestess in her own right, leaving their home to journey and protect other villages in need of their help. She was still naive due to her young age, having not experienced the true duty of a priestess as of yet, the hardships, sacrifice and more that came along with it. You couldn't save everyone and casualties were expected, but Kaede would learn that in time. But she was proud of Kaede, she was becoming a powerful person, their parents would be proud of her, following in her footsteps. The path they both believed they would follow had been changed. Kikyo was now a mother alongside being a priestess, teaching her daughter to follow in her footsteps, she no longer had to protect the village alone. She felt more whole and content than she had in the past, she had a different destiny but one that she embraced happily. She gazed at the burnt sky, the oranges, reds and pinks of the sunset staining the sky, the gentle autumn breeze tickled her skin and flustered her hair. Thinking of her home, thinking of her small hut where her husband and child awaited her, she didn't regret the choices she had made.
Miyuki giggled as she held the ball to her chest, her heart beating fast in her small chest, throwing it into the air and kicking it. The other children hurrying behind her
"Miyuki-chan, wait up, you're too fast"
"Catch her!"
InuYasha watched as Miyuki played with the other children, her speed made it harder for the other kids to catch up but she played fairly. She would allow them to catch up with her, then quicken her pace to tease them, before kicking the ball to someone else. Their previous reservation had eased, aware that Miyuki meant no harm and she just wanted to make friends. He remembered how much he wished he could have played with other children when he was her age, how much he wished someone would show him friendliness. Though envious that he was robbed of this as a child, he was happy that his daughter was able to fit in better than he did. She was able to act her age, embracing her adolescence rather than traumatised from a young age. Suddenly, he caught a familiar scent and smiled, she'd made it home faster than he anticipated, the scent of the incense temples used clinging to her. He didn't smell any blood on her meaning she hadn't been attacked by demons on the way home. He turned to see Kikyo approaching, having discarded her previous grassy cloak and kasa, untying her hair and wearing the rouge he had gifted her with. Seeing her wear his mothers rouge, treasuring his gift and wearing it with pride warmed his heart "Okaeri" he greeted. Kikyo approached, observing her daughter playing with other children, her anxieties of Miyuki being able to make friends lessened, though she wondered if part of that had been due to InuYasha intimidating them. Had she been alone bullying may have occurred. Her influence on the village protected Miyuki, they knew that should Miyuki be harmed or disrespected in any way, Kikyo would not tolerate any of it. She could see how happy Miyuki was, her eyes bright and wild, excited like a young animal playing in the wild. If she had a tail it would be wagging wildly, if she had ears like her father they would be twitching happily.
"How's the brat? Has she been sassing her teachers much?" he joked, Kaede had a big personality, she was stubborn, quick learning, brave and resilient. Kaede bore a strong resemblance to Kikyo, minus the freckles, but she lacked a lot of patience that her older sister had. He didn't doubt that stubbornness may mellow out or even help her in battle someday. Kaede reminded him of when he was a child, refusing to admit weakness and always willing to prove her worth. But she compared herself to Kikyo, diminishing herself, hopefully her training would help boost her confidence.
"She's homesick as expected, but she's studying dutifully, her barrier skills and archery have improved. But she's got a long way to go" Kikyo smiled. She missed her family, she missed what was familiar, all the pleasures of life she previously enjoyed she had to cast aside. She had lessons all day, she had to pray in the temple, perfect her combat, archery skills, meditate and clean. Learning about different kinds of demons, their demonic aura, influence and more. She had to learn about prayer beads, sutra scrolls, protection spells and more. There was a lot she needed to educate herself on. The process was long, it was stressful and made you question yourself, Kikyo remembered her own journey and how challenging it had been, but she learned well from it.
"She's just like you, strong willed and efficient" he laughed, Kaede had faced many demons so young, she was nearly kidnapped by Mistress centipede, she'd met his half brother. Her village had been attacked on many occasion, yet she always bounced back. She never showed fear to anyone, always snappy, sarcastic and hostile. She listened well and performed her duties to her fullest. Kikyo had taught her well before she attended training.
"It seems I had nothing to worry about, you handled babysitting alone rather well" she teased. She had worried that InuYasha would end up chasing her if she tried hiding in the village somewhere. Making sure she didn't get hurt or fall asleep somewhere so he had to find her. Sometimes she got bored when her father had to aid the villagers, occupying herself somehow. But she had befriended some of the local children and it was going smoothly, meaning that should herself or InuYasha be busy in the future, she could let her spend time with other children.
"Only cos I had to scare them a little, you shoulda seen how scared she was to say hi" InuYasha muttered, she'd been shaking like a leaf, averting her gaze and on the verge of tears. Prepared to run away if things turned sour and hide behind her father as she cried. Kikyo chuckled, she had been as protective as she expected, though luckily he hadn't gone overboard, reaching over to tickle his ear affectionately. InuYasha reached over to wrap his arm around Kikyo, gently pulling her close to him, nuzzling her head affectionately "We missed you" he mumbled. He hated being away from Kikyo for too long, he felt a sense of loneliness and longing when she was gone. She was always on his mind, his thoughts drifting to her. Her intense brown eyes, her soft gentle smile and playful giggle. Kikyo smiled, as had she, the journey felt longer without InuYasha by her side, he'd been her shadow for so long, to not sense his presence felt strange. She never had to hide her worries, stresses or problems from him, she could openly convey her negative emotions.
"Lady Kikyo is back!" one of the kids yelled, approaching the couple with bright smiles
"Lady Kikyo, your lipstick is so pretty" another praised, Lady Kikyo had never worn lipstick before, but it suited her. She looked so pretty wearing it, so bright and red like a flower.
"How was your journey?"
"Is Kaede coming back soon?"
Kikyo smiled as she watched the children gather around her with bright smiles and eager questions. Before becoming a mother she had always been good with children. Many of them following her as she wandered the village, often gathering herbs or merely observing to ward off demons. Then she spotted a familiar face, her heart filled with maternal warmth. Miyuki rushed towards her mother, an expression of joy on her face as she leapt into her mothers arms, nuzzling her happily to which Kikyo smiled, kissing her cheek. Her daughter was back in her arms again, though apart only briefly they had missed each other very much.
"No fair Miyuki!"
"You're hogging all the attention"
Miyuki turned her head, pouting, everyone was whining at her for showing affection towards her mother. She was allowed to be selfish, she was worried about her. There were all sorts of mean people out there that hated her mama, she was home safe and she was happy. They were just jealous because her mama was so cool "She's my mama! I'm allowed!" she huffed. She gripped Kikyo tightly, glaring at them sulkily as she held onto her mother refusing to let go. InuYasha smirked, holding back the urge to laugh, she had definitely inherited his stubborn streak. She adored receiving love and affection from her parents, doted on by them both. Arguing with other children who had previously admired her mother, occupying all of her attention. She wasn't the only person who idolised Kikyo, she was just as clingy and protective towards her mother as Kaede.
"Did you have fun Miyuki?" Kikyo asked, her cheeks were rosy from running around, her eyes wild and bright like a star. She was beaming with happiness and she was very enthusiastic. She was pleased to know her child could enjoy some normality in her life, it was all she had ever wanted for her. The fear that other parents in the village may get their children to avoid her worried her, she couldn't stop them but it still hurt her. Knowing Miyuki was forming friendships warmed her heart.
Miyuki nodded proudly, happily expressing her activities with her mother "Hai, I got to play ball and papa made sure nobody was mean" she smiled. They had played catch, kicked it around and even picked flowers. Sometimes they had to stop because the other children got tired while she didn't, but she knew it was because they were fully human. Her stamina was higher than theirs so she got tired a lot less easily. Nobody made fun of her, nobody accused her of cheating and nobody tried to isolate her, they all played together and had fun.
Kikyo peered at InuYasha knowingly, so her suspicions had been correct, she imagined the scary expression he would have been wearing and tried to restrain the urge to laugh. InuYasha averted his gaze, blushing awkwardly, knowing he would be teased about this later. "I see and are you hungry?" she asked, it had been a long day, they would all need food. Her journey to and from the temple had been treacherous, she had needed to tend to her horse, making her way in the darkness and avoiding demons. Resupplying her arrows, and assuring she wasn't robbed or injured.
Miyuki's eyes brightened eagerly, her stomach growling eagerly at the mention of food "Hai" she admitted
Miyuki pottered around the hut, preparing the cutlery for dinner while her mother roasted meat, mushrooms and soup for her family. Rice was boiling in the pot. She had been able to gather the mushrooms she had promised while out with papa and they had meat left from papa's last hunt. It was so tasty and smelled so nice, making her stomach growl louder. InuYasha helped her to assure she didn't hurt herself and everything was in place, making sure she didn't pick up too much.
Kikyo tended to the fire as she watched the food cook, the orange glow of the flames reflected in her eyes. She wasn't naive, she knew her husband reflected upon his own experiences due to being a father, worried of history repeating itself. It was only natural he would feel this way, "InuYasha, when Miyuki was playing with those children, you remembered your past didn't you?" Kikyo asked cautiously. She didn't blame him for feeling that way and only wished she could heal the wounds he carried in his heart. The loneliness he had been subjected to before he found his family.
InuYasha sighed, Kikyo's perception was so accurate sometimes it scared him, she always knew the secrets that laid in his heart. Yeah he wouldn't deny it, the memories were there, that trigger of his past which had caused him trauma. The memories of wanting to join in, to play, to be accepted, only to be turned away, they caused him so much pain. Wishing he could play with other children only to be treated like a freak. Miyuki was only 25% demon and yet she wasn't fully human, the fact that she had demon in her would always make her an outcast. The worry that Miyuki would be treated the same, that she would never find comfort or solace anywhere, because she couldn't fully fit into either world. Aware that if she was rejected, Miyuki would remember it, crying for hours, filled with self hatred because she didn't fit in. Blaming herself that nobody liked her, that she scared other people. Feeling ashamed of her demon blood, just as he had for his human blood. Miyuki had a compassionate heart so she would never hate anyone, but she would take things to heart and internalise it, she would remember the cruelty and distance herself from others. She would put up walls to protect herself just as he had, disconnecting from the world around her and living an isolated life. But when she did get angry it was rare, she would lose control of her demon blood, her fangs and claws would become sharper, her eyes would turn pure gold. Her eyes would glow with a demonic hue, having slits instead of normal irises, her powers would unleash wildly. She would throw a tantrum and cry, breaking things and lashing out at people. People would become afraid of her, scared to approach, thinking she would have gone feral and lost control, scared she would hurt them. Rather than seeing a little girl who was upset and frightened. But instead she was accepted into the group and allowed to play, they hadn't treated her coldly and slowly warmed up to her. She was able to have a form of normal childhood. "Its the demon in her, she'll never fully have a normal life, just like me. She'll always be different but to people who aren't us, that's not a good thing". Sesshoumaru may acknowledge her as family and slowly warm up to her, but he would always see her as shameful to the family. Demons would mock her for being weak, her lack of demon blood and power. Humans would see her as a monster, corrupted and worry she would lose control. She would be judged by both sides.
Kikyo felt a pain in her chest, she knew InuYasha was right but she still felt anger and sadness that her daughter had to suffer because of their love. The way both sides fell so naturally into such a hateful mentality. Miyuki was her daughter, her baby, her firstborn, she would never love anyone as much as she did her baby. She could never hate her or reject her her blood. She knew what she was getting into when she became pregnant, she feared for the life her baby would face someday, the consequences of her relationship with InuYasha. The same pain her deceased mother in law had felt upon becoming pregnant with InuYasha, when she became married to a DaiYokai instead of another nobleman human. But InuYasha would be able to resonate and understand that pain, because he had experienced it, he had felt it, trying to make sure Miyuki never felt that same loneliness. She felt relieved that InuYasha was able to mentor and guide his daughter through her life, so she could feel comforted and brave.
"But there are half demons like me out there, ain't many but they exist. We can only hope when she gets older she finds them, so she can have friends" he smiled. Plenty of humans had mated with demons and married, bearing other half demons like him, not all would appear human though. More commonly was a demon father who mated with a human mother, but on occasion male humans fell for demon mothers who bared their children. There would be other children like Miyuki out there somewhere. Quarter demons were even rarer than quarter humans, when half demons married full blooded demons where they had very little human blood. Kikyo softened, she knew other half demons like her husband existed, wondering where in the world they could be hiding and if their daughter would meet them someday. Preferably they stayed hidden, living isolated lives where they didn't get into trouble and lived semi peaceful lives. Other demons who didn't hate humans, maybe someone out there would accept Miyuki someday.
