Chapter 17
Liv stared out the moving car window. She was lost in her daydream. Fitz's voice was a far distance away although he was sitting right next to her in the back seat as they drove back to the ranch house. He was on a phone conference with the mayor of Avila Beach. They were finalizing and summarizing up the events of the day.
Her body moving in motion with the car, a soft smile on her face as the words echoed in her memory. "This is the love of my life, Olivia." Her elbow now rested on the car door, and her finger covered her mouth.
It brought such a feeling through her. The love of my life. Five words that meant everything to her. She put her head down now, shaking it slowly. Could this be real? She closed her eyes. The first sight she saw was their baby. Little Grant looking at her, blue curious eyes trying to focus on his mother's brown eyes.
Now, her shoulders went up. Her life really was complete, and Davis was right. If she wanted this whole situation with the Putney's to end, she had to play a dangerous game. She had to lure them to her. Liv took a deep breath through her nose.
She heard Fitz's voice come louder in the background. "Livvie, you ok?" She felt his hand rub her back.
Liv turned and looked at him, smiling. She leaned back and rested her head on his shoulder, as he brought his arm around her and rested his hand on her shoulder. She kissed his cheek. "I'm just fine Mister." She nestled a bit in the crook of his neck and turned and looked back out the window.
"Did you enjoy your day in Avila Beach?" he asked.
"I did. Thank you so much. It felt good. Did you mean what you said to Cameron?"
"About coming to dinner at the ranch?"
"No, about me being the love of your life, I wasn't expecting those words."
They were turned towards each other now, Fitz looking seriously in her eyes. "One thing that got me elected, first at mayor, now as governor, was my bad habit of telling the truth. It's what most politicians don't have. I only tell the truth Liv. Cameron has been my friend since we met in Ms. Sullivan's class in second grade. I can tell him anything and he should know who I am going to love for the rest of my life."
"Fitz." Liv whispered. God, this man just never stopped making her feel so good. "The things you say." She pulled him to her lips, as she kissed him. She connected her forehead to his. "I can't even describe the feelings you make me feel."
He hugged her, pulling her close to him. "I can say the same thing about you, Livvie." The car came to a stop.
They saw MiMi sitting on the bench in the garden. She had the carriage there with her. Liv could see Grant blinking in the dimming daylight still with his little blue sun hat on. He looked just as Fitz did when he was squinting in the sun on the beach today.
Liv walked up to the garden. She rubbed MiMi's back. "Was he any trouble?"
MiMi took Liv's hand softly. "This handsome boy doesn't know that word, not with his MiMi. He was fine, the perfect little guy." He looked at MiMi, hearing her voice. "Weren't you Grant, you were just fine for your MiMi."
"Thank you." Liv reached in and lifted Grant out of the carriage. She raised him above and brought him down to her forehead. "Hello my handsome boy. Are you enjoying the garden with your MiMi?" Liv kissed him gently.
Fitz walked over, gave MiMi a kiss on the cheek. "Thank you for watching him today."
"No need to thank me, I should thank you two. This guy brings so much joy to me. Your mother would have been so happy with him, Fitz. They way you brought her happiness, he would have doubled that."
Fitz took Grant from Liv. He began walking along the flower trail, holding Grant and pointing out colors. He walked to the back of the garden. Liv watched him, lovingly, and MiMi watched Liv with smiling eyes.
"He loves you, Olivia. You do know that."
She nodded. "Yes, MiMi, I do. Not that he needed to, but he sealed that thought today." Liv crossed her arms. "MiMi, are you familiar with the Putney family?" Liv looked at MiMi's face turn from smiling to a sheer cold stare at her.
She took a deep breath. She closed her eyes. "Charles Putney and his disgusting father. Oh, I am familiar with them. I told Gerry throughout Fitz's childhood to steer clear of them, the man never listened. Did Fitz have a run in with him today? I wouldn't be surprised if Gerry sent Jax to bully Fitz into talking to Gerry again."
"Chip is the man who attacked me, who almost killed me and Grant. He is also the man who beat and killed my best friend, Abby. Abby's mother took me in as a foster child when I was 15. Abby was like a sister to me, her mother, like my mother."
MiMi covered her mouth with both her hands. "Oh Olivia." She pulled in Liv for a hug, something Liv wasn't expecting, but it comforted her. She rested her chin on MiMi's shoulder.
"Does Fitz know all this?"
"He knows everything, and he is on a one-man mission to bring them both down. I am scared for him. They don't know our connection. After Chip beat Abby, before he killed her several months later, I broke both his kneecaps with a bat. They have been after me ever since. Abby lost her life because of it." Liv took a deep breath.
"You should have broken his skull with that bat." MiMi stopped. "Forgive me. I just despise them and all their cohorts. They broke into Gerry's life when he was most vulnerable after Emma died. They had been friends, but Jax knew Gerry was a gold mine as Governor and soon to be Senator, he couldn't see through it though."
"Were Chip and Fitz close?"
"Fitz could sense the evil in the boy. He never did like him. He only hung around him for his father's happiness. Fitz did a lot to make his father happy. He went against a lot of his morals, until he met you, then he did a complete turn around." MiMi smiled. She saw Fitz walking back towards them.
"Dinner is in the beach house, as you requested, Fitz." MiMi kissed Grant. "I'll see you tomorrow. MiMi loves you forever." She rubbed Liv's shoulder. "Enjoy your evening."
Liv turned to Fitz. "Dinner? The beach house? Are you trying to seduce me Governor Grant?"
"That's exactly what I am trying to do." He put Grant in the carriage, as his son was looking at him. "Isn't it Grant? I want to make your mommy…."
"Fitz." Liv warned.
"Feel relaxed." He began pushing the carriage. "What did you think I was going to say, you naughty woman."
Liv smiled and interlocked her arm with him as they walked as a small family to the beach house, the waves hitting shore in the backdrop as they walked, and the smell of salt water in the air. It was the most relaxed Liv had felt in over a year.
After an incredible dinner Fitz had a few phone calls to make. He wasn't going to be at the hearing tomorrow, and he was making arrangements to get messages to him about what was happening. He was nervous for Liv but knowing Davis would be with her calmed him a bit.
Liv had Grant in the middle of the bed. He was lying on his back. His arms and legs were flaring in the air. The boy was wide awake, and Liv was reciting another book to him as he listened to his mother's voice.
"I love you Stinky Face." Liv put a soft kiss on Grant's cheek. "That's you, you're my Stinky Face." She watched as his eyes were wondering. "But Mama, Mama, what if I were a one-eyed monster? Then I would look right into your one eye and say, I love you and I would sing to you until your one droopy eyelid finally closed and you fell fast asleep." Liv smiled. She loved that book. She loved every moment she got to share with Grant.
"Judge Bailey is the one I don't trust; you know how he got onto the bench." Fitz was speaking on the phone to Linda. Linda was going to be in the courtroom tomorrow, being this was her hometown of Los Angeles.
"Fitz, your father appointed him." Linda reminded him.
"Yeah, and my father is friends with Jax Putney. I just don't trust this whole thing. I'll be suspicious if he sends him back tomorrow. Just be prepared, be vigilant, and make sure you get the names of anyone who oversees transport. You have the list I gave you?"
"Yes, I have it with me, digitally on my phone, and I have given the list to my detail, the ones you assigned. This is important to you huh?" Linda was a bit curious.
"The Putney's have gotten away with too much, just because they have money. My father being friends with them for years wasn't a good look, especially for us. I want to make it clear I'm not in their pocket, this administration isn't in their pocket. This has to end somewhere."
"Understood, and very noble of you. I'll be in touch, Governor. Have a good night and good luck with FEMA tomorrow. Is your father coming, he could have some influence." Linda asked.
"No, I'd rather do this on my own. I haven't heard from him. I'm waiting for him to put the gun bill in front of the Senate. Hopefully that comes in the next week. Enjoy your evening." Fitz hung up.
Fitz was stopping at nothing to make sure Liv was comfortable at that hearing tomorrow. He couldn't imagine the emotional pain she would be in seeing Chip up close in the flesh. She was able to outrun him in Oakland, he didn't get close. Now, Fitz was worried what may happen when she sees him in that courtroom.
He wanted this over. This whole ordeal with the Putney's done. He wanted to focus on getting Liv and Grant introduced to the public. He began today, not only taking her in public to the shops, but having a picture of them taken and ordered to be shared, first to his Californian Senate leader and next to his father.
Sanderson would be joining them tomorrow on the tour of San Jose. Sanderson already hinted at a presidential run for Fitz, if there were no secrets. Well, he had Tom send the picture anonymously to Sanderson, to make him think.
At least Liv wouldn't be a secret, and if Sanderson had the faith in him, he would come to him, but after going to his father first. Fitz knew the games his dad's friends played. He grew up watching it. It was like a lifestyle to him.
He saw Liv lying on the bed, Grant in the middle, kicking his little legs, and Liv reciting a book to him. Fitz recognized that book. "I Love you Stinky Face." Fitz said. He plopped opposite Liv's side of Grant.
"Yeah," Liv smiled at him. "He's my caterpillar, my stinky face, and everything else." She looked at Grant who was now focused on the blues of his father's eyes. Liv noticed something different with Grant and she had a feeling what was coming.
She watched as Fitz had his finger in Grant's hand. With his other hand, Grant slowly raised it to his chin, and lifted it to his mouth. He began biting on the fist, drool getting all on it. Liv nudged Fitz. "Look, Fitz, he discovered his hand."
Fitz smiled watching his son nibble on his hand. The look on Grant's face, pure surprise, as he discovered this wonderful thing reached his mouth. "Is that your hand, big guy, you like that hand?" Fitz said looking lovingly at him.
He snapped a picture of Grant with his hand in his mouth. Suddenly, with one finger still in his mouth, Grant gave a big smile to Fitz and turned to Liv. Liv stood up and walked over to the window, wiping tears from her eyes.
"Hey, Liv." Fitz picked up Grant. "What's wrong?"
She shook her head, "Nothing, that was just an emotional moment. I don't know. It was like his first milestone. Then he smiled at you. He recognizes you now."
With Grant over his shoulder, Fitz pulled Liv close to him. "He recognizes both of us, as two people that love him the most."
Fitz handed Liv his phone. "Take this phone. It's secure, Huck already downloaded it or set it up, or whatever Huck does. Keep this one, I'll have him do another one for me for tomorrow. I want to be able to be in contact with you tomorrow."
Liv took the phone. She looked at the picture he took of Grant. It was adorable. The small smile on his face with his little finger in his mouth. His blue eyes smiling at his father, and the tiny curl on his head. Liv laughed. "He looks so cute, so happy."
Liv sent a text to Huck. "Please print six of these, wallet size. Thanks, Liv."
"It's time I give Erin a call and let her know about the hearing tomorrow and Grant. I'll send her this picture of him." Liv took a deep breath, feeling she broke a chain.
Liv took him from Fitz, ready to feed him and put him down for the night. Fitz contacted Huck to get another phone ready for him in the morning. Fitz would be heading out super early. He had to be in San Jose by sunrise to meet FEMA and deal with the press.
She joined him in bed once Grant was asleep, resting her head on his chest. "You know I am going to worry about you tomorrow." Fitz said rubbing her shoulder.
"Don't worry about me, focus on getting relief for those families who lost everything in the fires. Will your dad be joining you?"
"I sure hope not."
She looked up at him. "Fitz, he's a Senator, if anyone can persuade FEMA…."
"Yeah, I know, but I am not ready to see him yet."
Liv wasn't going to push the issue. "Thank you for an amazing day, Fitz, from going to the beach with you to Grant finding his hands," Liv laughed, "it's been just amazing."
"I want to be there for all his firsts Liv."
"I know you do. You know Davis is going back to New York after the hearing, so, I'm taking his advice and staying." Fitz looked down at Liv and now turned towards her. They were face to face now.
"They'll be three cars there after the hearing. Jax works his men in pairs. If there are three cars, they'll be confused. You talk about it with Davis how you want to outsmart them. I know you're going to the airport with him but make it so you're there before him."
Liv nodded, her hand on Fitz's cheek. "I know how to play the Putney game."
"I love you." Fitz said looking in her eyes and coming in for a kiss.
Liv's lips hungrily welcomed his as he pushed her chest to connect with his. Their heads turning, grinding into the kiss, and Liv was lost as his hand rubbed her back and came around to rub her breast.
"Give him your life, Liv" she heard Davis's words in her mind. She pushed his shoulder and straddled his stomach, continuing with the kiss, as his hands were now all over her body, causing chills up and down.
She stopped and rested her head fully on his chest as he massaged her hair gently. He was tired, she knew that. "We'll continue this tomorrow after I finally see Chip in cuffs."
She felt him smile, as he drifted off to sleep. He whispered, "There's nothing I wouldn't do for you Livvie."
"I know Fitz. I love you." She fell asleep quickly after him, just as they were. It wasn't until 3 am when Fitz moved her from him and began getting ready. Liv heard him say goodbye to Grant, give her a kiss, and leave.
While little Grant was discovering his hand, back in Avila Beach, several men walked past the seized sign put up several hours ago, ignoring it completely and entered the enormous beach house to greet their boss, Jax Putney.
Jax had called twelve of his trusted men in, he was ready to go head on to a full-blown war with Governor Fitzgerald Grant and Olivia Pope. The Governor had the whole state of California at his disposal, so that would be complicated.
Olivia had her baby daddy, a skilled guard who was once part of the Secret Service at her disposal. That fool would do anything the young lady asked of him and that would be his demise, Jax was sure of it. Of the twelve men in front of him now, ten of them would have no remorse in killing anyone.
They sat anxiously around the long table, some of them just finishing up their feast of the food spread Jax had out for them. In the middle of the table, six pictures. All twelve Putney disciples were about to get a crash course on Putney enemies.
Ben did not have a seat at the table. He had too much to learn, so he would be directly behind Jax, learning. All the men present had worked for Jax or Chip in some capacity before, so they were well aware of how their boss or bosses operate. Ben could learn a lot from them, and that was Jax's intention.
"Well, gentlemen, shall we begin?" Jax air glided his hand above the pictures displayed for them. "What you have before you is a mission. Don't look as them as people, they are your mission. We are now on a mission to destroy. I have been a patient man. I have sat back and watch things I own and people I love be taken down. I am not standing for it anymore." He looked at the hungry faces of the men before him.
"Before I get started, this involves the new Governor of the state. If anyone wants to walk out now, do so, without any retaliation, that's a promise." Jax waited, no one moved. "Good, that's what I like."
"These two pictures here are those of Olivia Pope and her guard/detail/lover Davis Ferguson. Davis is a skilled secret service agent and former Green Beret in the Army. We have reason to believe he fathered a baby with Olivia Pope so anyone who can get a picture of the spawn would get an extra 10 grand in their bank account."
That caused a buzz in the room, as the pictures were passed around for a better look. "They are expected to be at the hearing for my boy tomorrow in Los Angeles. I don't need you in the courtroom tomorrow, I need you outside. I need you on the perimeter, and you don't let them out of your sight. Ben will be in the courtroom and he will be giving updates as needed" Ben nodded.
"They are going to head back to New York after the hearing tomorrow. Once Chip is required and extradited back to New York, they will follow." Ben gave a tight smile, thinking he sounded intelligent. He saw Jax look up at him with a look of disgust.
"IF he is extradited tomorrow. We still have more time in the thirty-day window. But IF he is extradited, two of you will follow them back to New York. Olivia has been able to outsmart us for months, hiding out. You find their hideout, that's an extra 10 grand in your bank account."
Flip raised his hand. "So boss, we find their hideout, what's the plan after that?"
Jax rolled his eyes. "Do I truly need to outline it for you, Flip? Maybe you shouldn't volunteer to go to New York." Jax said it but didn't mean it. Flip was most gruesome of his men. He could eat a full meal minutes after killing someone in cold blood, with the body at his feet.
"Just asking is all Boss, you know I'm all in." Flip nodded.
"OK, Boss, hold up." Buzz spoke next. Buzz was one of the details tricked at the rest stop. "What if they travel separately? Look what happened at the rest stop."
"Glad you're a thinker Buzz, someone should be in this group. Lose one follow one, that's how it works. If you lose Olivia, follow Davis, you lose Davis…."
"Follow Olivia." Buzz said. "They'll wind up together sooner or later, especially with the baby."
"The baby is not to be harmed. Do you understand that? If the baby is with them and they both die, you get that baby to me." Jax confirmed.
"What does the baby look like?" Buzz looked over the other pictures. "You don't have a picture of the kid? Is it a boy, girl? What should I be looking for?"
Jax rubbed his face. "Didn't I just say I needed a picture of the baby?" Jax shook his head. He remembered Olivia calling his bluff about knowing the baby was even a boy. "just stick to these two. So, it's safe to say Buzz and Flip, you'll be heading out east."
They nodded in unison. He moved the next two pictures over. "He needs no introduction." Jax held up the picture of Fitz.
"The pretty boy Governor. God, I hate that man. My brother is going to serve 6 more months in the slammer because of him and that new domestic abuse law." Little Man pounded the table. He may have been nicknamed Little Man because of his built, but his skills in martial arts had him able to fight like a big boy. "I'll be happy to get that guy, I don't give a rat's ass if he is Governor."
"Easy Little Man, not so quick with the Governor. He's not that easy to get to." Jax reached for the other picture. Jax never would have thought in a thousand years he would ever make an enemy out of Big Gerry Grant, but Jax couldn't trust him any longer.
Before Jax gave any background, he lost himself in thought, of when they first met at the hospital so many years ago. Big Gerry was his first true friend in Santa Barbara, and while they both did each other favors none of them would brag about, Fitz wins in the end. Fitz being Gerry's boy, Jax knows Gerry would never choose him over Fitz, so enemy now it is. He'll string Gerry along for as long as he could though.
"Senator Fitzgerald Grant, the Governor's father." Jax passed the picture along.
He heard a chuckle from Doug. "Pretty boy's father, you could take one look and tell. Senator, that's a joke. I'll work with Little Man on this one."
Jax nodded. "Okay, but again, not easy access, he's normally in DC, so…"
"I like long trips Boss." Doug threw Gerry's picture back the middle of the table. "I got this."
"These two are part of the Governor's detail. One is Tom, the other Luther. I need someone on them while following the Governor, someone to report back to Little Man, where the Governor is, are they with him? These are his best two, so you need to stay away from the Governor when they have him."
"Gladly" Tad and Ref said in unison. "We'll keep an eye on them Boss, not a problem.
"Good, so with the six of them covered with six of you, the rest will be in the tech room. We need and have high tech surveillance to follow, listen, and communicate. There is a team ready to train you down the hall."
"Not for anything Boss, how long you staying here? I mean that Seized sign outside is hard to miss." Buzz reminded him.
"The seized sign will be gone tomorrow, while you're giving me the outcome of the hearing."
"But I'm not going to be inside. How am I…" Buzz shut up with the look he was getting.
"Will you find a way?"
"Yes, I'll find a way, of course."
"Good, if the outcome is he goes back, here's the plan. If he gets another hearing, we can hold off on a plan."
They continued into the hours of the night. Jax still had to go to the tax offices to straighten out the shit Fitz put him in with the property. This was Fitz's way of keeping Jax from the trial, but Jax was on it. Fitz wasn't going to win so easily.
What Jax was unaware of was Huck had the same pictures Jax was showing his team in a folder for Fitz in the morning. Fitz knew each guy Jax was going to use, the only roadblock was which guy would be used for what. Huck had been able to hack into the weak ass security computers Jax had set up at Avila Beach. He was just waiting for a team to input any data. Huck figured a meeting was going on, as he waited.
Big Gerry sat in his DC Senate office. "Senator." He looked up to Barbara's voice, his clerical assistant. "It's almost midnight, do you plan on heading out."
He put both hands over his face and gave a hard rub down. He was exhausted, not having slept well in over a month now. "A few hours Barbara, I have some bills to finalize."
"Ok, I'm heading home." She looked over Gerry's shoulder to the lighted phone. "What an adorable baby." Barbara said.
Gerry looked down at the screen, not realizing he left it on to Grant's picture. "My brother's grandson." Gerry lied.
Barbara tilted her head a bit. "Certainly has the Grant gene. I would think it was your grandson. He looks just like him." Barbara pointed to the picture on Gerry's desk of Fitz as a baby.
"Yeah, the Grant genes run strong. Have a good night, Barbara." Once Barbara was gone, he looked down at the picture again. "He's putting your little life in danger, Grant." Gerry paused; he repeated the name. "Grant." He took a deep breath. "Grant Thomas Pope." He shook his head.
He had forced his own grandson to lose the Grant last name because of power, because of stupidity, and now Fitz was on a vendetta he didn't realize himself how dangerous it was.
Gerry had seen the coverage of Fitz speaking from Avila Beach this morning. He saw what had happened to the Putney property. Fitz was one bold man, he couldn't deny that about his son. Jax, though was one stupid man. He acted before he thought things through.
If something happened to Chip and Jax finds out Fitz is a father, well Grant is as good as gone. Maybe not gone as dead but gone as lost in the Putney empire. Three different senators had already come to Gerry.
They had made it clear to talk Fitz out of going through with the extradition hearing. "He has something on the Governor of New York and the Attorney General. If Fitz wins this round in California, he's going to lose terribly in New York." Senator Girard from Colorado warned.
"Look, my son is changing laws I worked years to put in place in California, he's on a mission and I can't stop him, we just have to see how this plays out."
Girard chuckled. "Fitz wants to be president one day; he shouldn't have Putney on his bad side." The three senators turned and walked out.
"Too late." Gerry whispered.
Now, at midnight in his DC office, he hit the call button. "Fitz" lit up on his display. It was only his tenth time calling today, and Gerry had hopes one day Fitz would answer his call. He just wanted Fitz to know what he was up against if Chip got sent back to New York.
As the other times Gerry had tried to reach out to Fitz in the past month, Fitz didn't pick up. He looked at the picture on his desk again. Grant was two months old now, more milestones, Gerry thought. He wondered if Olivia had stayed.
Of course, she stayed, at least until Chip was sent back to New York, Gerry figured. If Fitz's story was accurate, Olivia would stop at nothing to seek justice for her sister. Gerry had one of his aides from DC working on getting all the evidence from that case. He needed to know what Fitz was up against with Olivia.
He also wanted to be sure Olivia was telling Fitz the complete truth. If Gerry could recall, the girl Chip allegedly killed was a red head. How the hell could she be Olivia's sister? He picked up the phone one more time, but before he could try Fitz again a text came through.
It was from State Senator Sanderson in California. Attached was a picture. Gerry read the text first. "Heading to San Jose to survey wildfire damage with Fitz and the FEMA tomorrow. Going to discuss presidential run. Before I do that, want to tell me what the hell this is all about?"
Gerry opened the picture. "Oh God." Gerry whispered to no one. He was looking at a picture of Fitz and Olivia in a small store on Front Street, both smiling at each other as Olivia was putting a pair of sunglasses on to Fitz. Fitz's hand clearly on her shoulder.
Not answering the text, Gerry stood up and called to his detail to get the car ready. He needed to head out. Out to California and join FEMA on that tour of San Jose. "Fuel the plane," he told his detail. "We're heading to San Jose." He paused. "Yes now." He hung up in disgust.
Olivia walked through the strange halls of yet another public high school. It was her third one in three months and it was only her sophomore year. She saw shadows moving all around her, not connecting faces to the bodies. She had no desire to know anyone here.
She had been to four different foster homes. Two of them were in the same district as one high school so the month of September was spent in the same school. The last school she attended before getting sent back to the group home was filled with fights and filth. She guessed she could consider this one an upgrade.
Gazing up at classroom numbers, Liv was looking for room 209, her honors Algebra class. She despised math, but at least she was good enough at it to be in an honors class. It meant she had some hope of making it into NYU, if she were to continue dreaming big.
Without warning, she walked dead on into a person, one of the other zombies joining her in the confides of the corridor. The girl, Liv would notice, dropped her two books she was holding in her hand, and Liv's schedule she was holding fell to the floor with the books.
"Oh no!" Liv said. "I am so sorry, that was totally my fault." Liv went to pick up the books, as the girl rubbed her shoulder. It was the shoulder Liv bumped into. "I was looking up at the numbers, not in front of me."
The girl reached out for the books as Liv handed them to her. "It's fine, I'm fine, I was distracted as well." She smiled at Olivia and put her hand out. "I'm Abigail Whelan, Abby for short. I'm looking for room 209 and I have no idea if I'm going in the right direction."
"Olivia Pope." Liv said with a smile. "Not to avoid the subject, but you have the most beautiful red hair I have ever seen. It's just so gorgeous." Liv felt herself blushing after she said it.
"Thank you." Abby smiled. "Not many people have the nerve to tell me, they just stare."
"Are you new here?" Liv asked. "I am, that's why I am lost."
"Not new, my class was finally changed to the honors class, they had me in the wrong one, now I'm just looking for the room 209."
"That's the room I'm looking for also. I think it's right there." Olivia pointed.
From that moment on, the two girls were inseparable. That afternoon, Abby walked Olivia to the group home, where she would want Olivia to never return to.
By some miracle, after a month of nonstop sleep overs and afterschool visits to the Whelan home, Abby finally talked her mother into becoming a foster parent for Olivia. After 3 years of losing count of foster homes, Liv found one to call home. It was the first time Liv cried since her mother's funeral.
Erin Whelan took Olivia in her arms. "This is your home now, I will never replace your mother, but I will treat you like my own daughter. Don't ever think you are intruding, or you are not welcomed here, you are now family.'
Abby shrugged and hugged Olivia. She whispered to her, "welcome home."
Olivia was sitting on the balcony of the Ranch beach house, listening to waves crash to shore. She was trying to find the nerve to call Erin. It wasn't a subject she felt she could make a quick conversation with. "Oh hey momma, yeah, I had a baby two months ago with the Governor of California." Liv took a deep breath. She would call her on the way to the hearing.
Fitz had left early after their fantastic night last night. Liv was dreading seeing Chip in the flesh at the courtroom.
She was waiting for Davis. Huck was coming to get Grant ready when he woke up. He would take him to the ranch house then do some more work for Fitz. Liv liked that Huck was more behind the scenes.
The Putney's didn't know about Huck and that's how Liv liked it. Huck would do more damage finding things out. Huck was never unprepared for a battle, and he liked the one up the technology in the ranch house gave him.
Yesterday had been so emotional with Fitz walking around her with her in public. Jax would not be able to attend the hearing for Chip now, thanks to Fitz, and Jax was able to see Olivia and know she'd be there without his presence.
"Today, Abby, we begin our long journey to your justice." She felt tears fill her eyes as she thought of the memory of first meeting her. "I promise you; he will get his due justice."
Liv heard Grant's little grunts as Huck entered the room behind her with him. She turned with a big smile on her. "You can't be a super spy with this one around. His little noises will give you away all the time."
"Yeah." Huck handed him to her. " He was awake in the crib, sucking his fingers. Guess he discovered his hands?" Huck was wiping some drool off his hand. Liv laughed.
Liv's mouth opened in surprised delight. She held Grant above her face. "Did you find your hands again? You like them? They taste good. Daddy was so happy for you." She kissed him as she pulled him into a hug.
"How are things with you? Did you hear what Fitz did yesterday?"
"With Jax? Yeah, it's all over the news. He's holding nothing back. He's good Liv, really good. Jax doesn't know which way to turn next." Huck sat next to Liv on the balcony.
Grant was leaning now in Liv's lap. His hands were taking turns making their way to his mouth, and drool was getting on Liv. Huck had to laugh. "Your shirt is going to be soaked."
"I was just thinking about Abby, about when I met her for the first time in our high school. Today, Huck, hopefully it's the beginning to the end."
"This could have ended months ago if you just would have let me…."
"Huck." Liv stopped him. "Do you think it will happen? Will I finally get to see him behind bars?"
"I don't think he makes it to New York." Huck shocked Olivia with that statement.
Her eyebrows crossed in confusion. "Why would you say that?"
He shrugged. "I think Jax has so many tricks up his sleeve, owns too many officers, judges, whatever, so I think he has a plan B, C, and D." Huck looked out towards the ocean. "Fitz offered me a job here."
Liv turned slowly and looked at Huck. "Define job." Liv said job with her quotation symbol.
"He wants me to run a behind the scenes security operation from the Governor's mansion. Much of his technology is outdated and he would like me and a team I choose to make it up to date and…" Huck shrugged, "you know, be on top of things."
"Like a spy. Spying on the people of California?" Olivia asked.
"I wouldn't put it that way. It's more technological. He didn't like the fact his father heard his conversation when he called you, he just wants things done, run right, and I don't blame him."
"He's trying desperately to keep me here and out of New York, away from Chip."
Grant began to stir around on Liv's chest. She let him latch on as she continued to talk with Huck.
"What's wrong with that Liv? He has a son now, he loves you, is it really so wrong for him to want you close, to want his son close?" Huck shook his head. "Whatever you decide to do, you know I'll be by your side, but this is something you have to think about Liv. You decided to have Grant. I know you made that decision on the love you have for Fitz. It's a special love, Liv. Look at him, he's innocent in all this."
Liv shook her head, agreeing with every word Huck said. Huck's lecture wasn't too much different than the talk she had with Davis. Huck and Davis knew her better than anyone, keeping her safe better than anyone could have done. She rubbed Grant's tiny back. "He's the reason, Huck. This guy right here, he's the reason I will stay, if it wasn't for Grant, I wouldn't do this to Fitz."
"Do what to Fitz, Liv? You're not doing anything to him. Don't you think if he wanted nothing to do with you, minus Grant of course, he would have said something a long time ago? You know he loves you, and you Liv deserve happiness. Grant is the bonus that completes your relationship. Let Fitz plan it out, he hasn't disappointed yet."
"Huck you know as well as I do it's not going to be that simple. What happens when Jax learns Grant's paternity? The way Fitz has been destroying him, the way we destroyed his son, Jax will go down in a blaze of glory ruining everything for Fitz, endangering Grant in the process." She pulled the now sleeping Grant on to her shoulder, walking in to change him on the bed.
"How's this, Liv, how about we take it day by day? Today is the first step in getting Chip behind bars. You know Jax has friends in the right places, that's why Davis being back in New York will be important." Grant was now in Huck's arms, Liv woke him up to change him, and he was staring at Huck now.
Liv stood with her arms folded. The television was on, and the news was reporting the Governor's tour of the San Jose wildfire damage. "We have learned through sources that Senator Gerry Grant will join his son, Governor Fitzgerald Grant on the tour of the damaged area. The Senator, former Governor of California, has vowed to keep on FEMA and whatever commitment they make to helping the families that have lost so much. Please stay with us for continuing coverage."
Olivia looked at Huck. "Did you know Gerry was coming today to do this with Fitz?"
"No, I had no idea."
"I don't think Fitz did either."
Davis had come into the beach house. "Hey Liv, Huck, and hello little Grant." Grant focused his eyes on another voice now, while in Huck's arms. Liv grabbed her cell phone, one Fitz had given her. She snapped a picture of the two super spies looking lovingly at their soon to be godson.
"The car will be ready in an hour Liv. I'll meet you outside. You ready for this?"
"I've been ready for over a year now." Liv looked at Huck. "Regardless of the outcome today, Davis is heading back to New York after the hearing. We'll have three cars outside the courthouse, you know that Jax…."
"Yeah, I know Liv, Jax will have his army in place. We'll be ready."
"Oh, while I have both of you here, I have something for you. I bought it on our outing to Avila Beach yesterday." Liv reached into the bag that was on the side. She pulled out the knives she had purchased.
She took Grant from Huck as the two of them examined their new toy. "Holy shit, Liv." Davis was the first to speak up. "This is like the holy grail of knives, this is sweet."
Huck was still examining his. "This is usually a hunting knife; this will cut through skin as smooth as cutting through cheese." Huck closed his eyes. "I can only dream of slitting Chip's throat with such perfection, such smoothness." Huck's eyes were closed, and Liv took a hard swallow looking at Davis.
"Huck!" Liv snapped him back to reality. "Grant is ready, MiMi said to bring him to her. I have three bottles made for him, so grab them before you leave."
"Uh, sure thing Liv. Oh, and here." Huck handed Liv the pictures she requested last night.
"These are great. Keep one for you, Huck, don't show MiMi, I'm giving her one later on."
"And the others?" Huck asked.
"Me, Fitz, you, Davis, MiMi, and Erin." Liv recited.
"Cool." Huck handed Grant to Liv to say goodbye and he went to get the bottles.
She held him in her arms. His left hand went to his mouth, and he began chewing on it. "Davis, look, he discovered his hands last night."
Davis looked over. "That's great little man. Soon, we'll be showing you how to protect your mommy." Davis kissed his forehead as Davis put the knife in his pocket and headed out with Grant and Huck.
Davis turned to leave with Huck. "See you in an hour, Liv."
Today would be an emotional day, but she was ready. She's been ready for this since she cradled her blood soaked best friend dead in her arms. Chip would finally get what he deserved.
