Chapter Nine: Garp vs. Roger! A Revelation About Shay!

Chapter Summary: As Garp realizes who he ran into in Loguetown, he starts to hunt down Roger as the memories progress. A shocking reveal happens within Shay's life for the Monkey and Gol family. Later, Shay goes into labor.

There was still a tenseness over the battlefield as the memories settled back onto Loguetown. It was like they now didn't know what to say about the events of Portgas D. Shay versus Rocks D. Xebec. A fight completely unknown to them all. Not even Garp knew about the fight that had happened. Even the role that Shay had played within the formation of the Whitebeard Pirates.

No one had known.

It was like it was a huge secret without it actually being a secret. Whitebeard didn't look ashamed that he had met Shay or the events that lead to them meeting. He never really spoke about his time before the formation of his own crew, and Ace was beginning to understand why. He was starting to see that there was a lot more to this than he possibly could think of.

He had felt the chill go down his spine from when he detached himself from his family. Looking around. All of this was because of him. Because of his choices that lead to all of them being here. Their lives were on this pedestal for all to see and no one even seemed to care. Everything about them was about to go on the line.

He was even forcing those around him not actually within the powers of this Devil Fruit to have to face seeing things they probably didn't want others to know.

His eyes moved to Marco. Even moments for them would be out in the open. Everyone was reacting to these memories as if they were watching a film. Like the people around the world who had been tuning in to watch his execution.

Everyone was to see everything. Because of this, Whitebeard's own past was starting to come to light. It was going further than he could ever had imagined.

The air caught in his throat. Even the Marine who this power belonged to wasn't sure of the full extent of her own power. There could be moments that even Ace didn't want people to see about him laid out for them.

He had to put a stop to this.

Before he could make a move, a hand was around his wrist, and he was turning to look into the golden eyes of his Alpha father. Mihawk shook his head. "Don't."

"Papa—"

"Let us do this for you." It wasn't even a question. Ace knew that none of them cared that their lives were being put on this pedestal but if anything went wrong. It would be on him. "You have to stop thinking this. We keep telling you that it is okay."

He sighed and nodded. "Okay." He whispered.

He hated how Mihawk just always seemed to know what it was he was thinking. What action he might take. Though, he always seemed to know exactly what to say that would make Ace feel better.

The memories had already settled around them, back on the younger version of Garp who was still running around the streets of Loguetown in search of Roger. Garp still looked ashamed of himself, grumbling about how he was young and worried about his wife.

Ace could help but chuckle for a second. Shaking his head.

Garp was cursing under his breath. Rushing through the streets. Pausing only for a second as he recalled just what he had said to Roger before. He turned on his heel heading back into a different direction.

What the hell was a pirate doing going to a cemetery?

As hell if he would let pirates run amok on this island. Let alone one with the highest bounty in the East Blue.

'So stupid, why didn't I realize that was Gol D. Roger sooner?' Garp thought to himself. He had maneuvered through the pathways, coming to the one that would lead straight to the cemetery of Loguetown. As he rounded the corner, he stopped. Roger wasn't far from him, kneeling down before a headstone. He was completely frozen watching the other Alpha. 'He's… singing.'

Sure enough, Roger was singing. Singing softly enough to himself as he cleaned off the headstone. Working at knocking off all the overgrown plants and dirt that was starting to cover the headstone.

It was the song that he was singing that was piquing the interest of Ace. Ace stopped, looking over to Shanks for a second. He knew that song. Shanks showed it on his face too. The soft, fond look that was there as Shanks relaxed almost immediately. "Mom?" Ace muttered.

Shanks just hummed and nodded, not having to verbally say a word while Ace never had to ask his question. Shanks knew the song too. For a moment, Ace could see flashes of himself when he was little, hearing Shanks sing the same song to him. Sometimes just even singing to it whenever he was just working on a task.

Ace's gaze moved over to Garp to see the soft smile on his face that he was attempting to hide. While no one seemed to say a word, the memory continued to play around them. The younger Garp was still standing there, eyeing Roger from where he was. Ace turned his attention back to it. For a moment, thinking of that memory of Rayleigh's when Roger spoke about his Omega father.

Gol D. Valentine.

The name on the headstone was clear now as Roger swiped away anything that was on it. Leaning back into the grass and lounging back on his hands as he stopped singing the tune. "It's been a long time." He muttered, "I have a lot to tell you." Garp just stood there, eyeing him for a second. The contemplation was on his face. As if he was having an internal battle on if he should approach or not.

For a moment, Garp just stood there. 'It's disrespectful to try and do anything with him here. I'll wait.' Had been Garp's thought. For the moment, he backed up, but stayed where his eyes were still on Roger.

"You really gave him a moment." Rouge muttered, looking over at Garp in surprise. Even Ace was surprised. Garp never really showed that much restraint most of the time. Though, he was never around when they were honoring the dead. There was a part of him that was happy to learn this tidbit about Garp. That even though Roger was the enemy, he was giving him the moment of solidarity.

"A cemetery is no place for a battle." Garp stated. Though, he was pretty sure it was the save face. Ace smiled.

The memory started to swirl around them for a moment, taking them away from the odd peacefulness that was between a pirate and a Marine and bringing them back to Dawn Island. More specifically, Shay's place of work. Her small Doctor's office that had been built within Foosha. Even though the room was small, it was like they could all fit into it comfortably.

Ace could only come to the conclusion that this memory was happening at the same time. It was clear that Shay was further along in her pregnancy. Her baby bump far more prominent than it had been before. It fit in with what the younger Garp had been saying about Shay's progression.

Shay was sitting within her office, a lab coat covering her everyday clothes as she lounged back in the chair. Makoto and Katsuki were in the room not too far from her. Working quietly as she went through paperwork that was sitting on her desk. On hand on the swell of her stomach. She only looked up as Katsuki had walked away from his workstation and over to where the Omega woman was sitting.

"Doctor Shay?" Shay looked up, a soft smile coming to her face. Katsuki looked nervous, shifting on his feet for a moment. "I need to talk to you."

"What is it?" Shay questioned.

Katsuki shifted his weight again, sighing as he looked back at Makoto before looking back at Shay. "I was wondering if there was any possible way for me to change my… dynamic."

Shay closed the file that was on her desk, turning in her chair. She didn't look surprised in the slightest. "Which dynamic are you?"

Katsuki blinked, "Wait… what?"

"What dynamic are you?" Shay questioned again.

Katsuki sighed. "Alpha. I don't feel like an Omega. I never have. I always felt wrong, but I never knew how to tell someone."

Shay smiled, "Thank you for telling me." She whispered, pushing herself up and heading over to her cabinet.

Ace blinked. He didn't even know it was a possibility that a secondary gender could be changed. He knew a primary gender could but not a dynamic. This was complete news to him. The only person who didn't look surprised at the memory was Law.

"Wait, people can just change like that?" Luffy questioned.

Law hummed, "It's not an easy process. You have to go on a series of hormone and pheromones blockers and inducers. It can be taxing on the body while also doing it safely. Changing a primary gender is a lot easier honestly." The Omega doctor explained, "Now, getting the body to react properly is where most people run into some issues. There are only two Devil Fruits that I'm aware of that can make the process simple. One can make the change instantly, the other is surgical."

Ace was listening intently, but nothing else could be said before their attention was back on the memories around them.

Shay pushed herself up and headed towards the bookshelves, where she skimmed over the books there before grabbing one off of the4 shelf. She pulled it out, turning and smiling at Katsuki. "This is everything you'll need to know. I'll start getting some blockers prepared for you."

Katsuki took the book, giving his thanks as his eyes stayed on her. She moved back over to her desk, reaching out for the den den mushi that was sitting there. "Doctor Shay?"

Shay made a noise, pulling the receiver off of the snail as she looked over her shoulder. "Yes?"

"Who are you calling?" Katsuki questioned.

She smiled. "Someone who can help much better than anything I can do." She stated, placing her attention back on the snail for a second, punching in a number as she waited.

"Is it really that difficult?" Katsuki questioned. For a moment, he looked guilty as he looked away.

Shay sighed, "Katsuki, I want you to be able to have everything that you want. I'm not fully capable of doing that, so I'm calling in a specialist you could say."

She stopped addressing Katsuki as the den den mushi's eyes popped up and a voice came over the other side, "Shay? It's been so long."

"Hey, Shuta." Shay said back, "I need a huge favor. Do you think you could come to the East Blue."

"Shuta?" Rouge muttered, "I know that name." She looked confused as she was started to mutter. Beside her, Garp's eyes widened as if a revelation had just hit him. "Dad?" Rouge questioned.

"It's been so long that I've forgotten." Garp whispered. "I only met him once."

There was a hum that came over the snail for a second, but it was clear that the other person was just making the noise to make it. "Possibly. Why are you in the East Blue, anyway? I thought you were still on Drum."

Shay laughed for a second, "Yeah, about that…" Her voice trailed off as a smile came to her face. "I kind of got married and now I'm expecting a baby."

The dead silence came next before a loud screech came through that had Shay pushing the snail away for a moment. She laughed, shaking her head before pulling it back. "Oh my God, and I wasn't invited to the wedding?! The audacity!"

"It was kind of a spur of the moment thing." Shay replied, "Anyway, I have an Omega boy here who wants to transition into an Alpha. I'll be starting him on hormone therapy to get started to make the transition easier on the body."

"And you called me because you know I can help in a better way."

"Exactly." Shay was grinning, though that grin had quickly warped into a smirk, "Do you have me on this?"

After a second of silence, the voice finally came back through as the den den mushi's face turned into a smile, "Of course! Give me a couple of months to get to you though."

"It's no problem. See you soon." With that Shay had hung up as the two swapped a couple more words before she was leaning back and smiling at Katsuki. "All set. We'll get you started on therapy and some hormone blockers. It'll help set you up."

Katsuki was blinking at her. "Who… was that?"

Shay smiled, a soft fond one before she was whispering, "My brother."

The stunned silence that followed took over the battlefield. Ace knew his own jaw dropped. Shay had a brother?! That was news to him. He had looked over to Garp, Rouge, and Dragon to see that they were all wearing the same face. Eyes wide, jaw dropped. Garp was the only one of the three who didn't look surprised. Rouge had muttered out, "I always wondered why that name sounded familiar." She whispered. Before she was blinking again and shaking her head, "No way!"

She turned to look at Whitebeard, shaking her head. Whitebeard chuckled for a second, "I think I know who her brother is."

"Who?" Ace questioned, "Why didn't we know about him?" This time he was looking at Garp.

Garp exhaled sharply, shaking his head, "They didn't have much contact except an occasional snail call. From what she told me, he left home when she was just a little girl. I guess, there are many things I never knew." He sighed, crossing his arms, "He was born Portgas D. Shuta, but he got married and had a child."

"Wait a second." Law suddenly stated, taking a few steps forward, "Something they said… he has a Devil Fruit. Doesn't he?"

Garp nodded, "He was your predecessor." He stated, looking Law straight in the eye.

The Omega Doctor froze, the air catching in his throat as the realization dawned on him. He muttered out, "He was the holder of the Ope Ope no Mi?" That's all Ace needed to hear to know what happened. Shuta must have died a long time ago.

"Wait, why are we just now finding out about him?" Shanks questioned.

Garp shrugged. "I suppose the truth of their relation to each other died with my wife." The Vice Admiral stated.

"My guess… she was so young that she didn't necessarily have memories of him." Whitebeard added, "Can't really tell someone about a person if you don't really know them much."

Ace laughed for a second, "They seemed to still be close though."

Garp shrugged. "I can't explain why she never really talked about him."

The mist around them swirled again, this time later in the day and back on the young Garp. They were still within the cemetery, but the only difference was that Roger was getting up and started to walk away.

Roger had noticed Garp's presence immediately. A smirk coming to his face for a moment. "You aren't just some regular man."

Garp stood on guard, lifting his fist. "You aren't either."

Roger smirked, reaching for the sword on his hip. "I love a good fight."

"Same here." Garp stated. The two seemly were talking to each other just by a glance as they both started out of the cemetery. Keeping a distance between each other but taking their stance out of the burial place. "I'm here to arrest you."

"I would love to see you try." Roger stated.

As they got out of the cemetery, Garp was the first to move, his fist hitting Garp's sword just as Roger pulled it out. The haki swarming between the two in a deadlock. Roger was smirking as Garp let one come to his face. "You really aren't a normal man." Garp added. "Which only gives me more incitive to take you down."

Roger bellowed out a laugh as the two pushed each other apart. "You'll have to kill me first." The pirate Captain stated. He twisted his foot bringing him to a stop as he held his sword in front of him. "I didn't get your name. I suppose if you know I'm a pirate, you already know my name."

Garp tsked. "Marine Captain Monkey D. Garp."

Roger smirked. "I'll remember it."

They clashed again, returning back to a complete deadlock. For a moment, he met Roger's eye. 'That… ferocity.' Garp thought. It had caught him off guard for a moment, but he could feel the haki swirling around him with each punch he gave, Roger was blocking with a slash of his sword.

That was until Roger had managed to slash him in the side and Garp had managed to land a fit on the other's jaw. Sending them both flying backwards. Garp snarled as he reached up to his side, the blood coating his hand as he looked up to see that Roger was gone.

"Son of a bitch." Garp stated, pushing himself up and going back after Roger.

Why was Ace not even surprised in the slightest? Roger was kind of a like a cat from what he could tell. Being able to get out a mess easily. Roger had been one of the main influences on why he was so keen on versing Whitebeard. He wanted to meet the same man who went one on one with Roger. Who had been the Captain of his grandmother.

Even at that age, he was at a standstill with Garp.

There was so much that he truly never knew about Roger, only the things he had heard from the people that knew him and the civilians of the world. How highly others spoke about him, to the degrading things from others.

A part of him believed that there was such a large gap between the two of them. He had wanted his name to be known as his. Not from Roger's blood moving through his veins. Not from the fact that he was the son of a Warlord and a yonko. His name.

It was starting to feel like that might not be possible.

But he was still going to achieve that.

The memory was still playing around them as Garp was actively seeking out Roger. Trying to find him again after he had gotten away from him. He wondered if Garp knew that Roger was from there at the time. That he would have known many of the locations, even if he had trouble finding the cemetery because of the addition of new buildings. Roger knew the place like the back of his hand.

Though, there was a thought that passed his mind.

What if Roger had known who Garp was and had faked ignorance to get Garp to come to him? It seemed like something Roger might do from what he had heard. It was hard to tell. Roger seemed so genuine. There was a part that believed Roger actually didn't know how to get there because of the addition of new buildings, that he wouldn't want to gain the attention of the Marines by just waltzing up to one and practically knowing that he would be followed. It seemed like he was overreaching on that.

Back within the memories, Garp had found Roger again, running along towards the docks. He had growled, jumping up and starting to head to where Roger was.

Roger had noticed him immediately, twisting out of the way just as Garp hit the ground, leaving the ground cracked around his fist. "I won't let you get away!" Garp roared.

Roger was snickering, placing a hand on the top of his head to keep his hat secured in place. "We'll see!" He exclaimed, kicking towards Garp, and managing to get another hit in before laughing as he took off again. "Catch me if you can!"

It continued like that as the two found all the way through Loguetown. Switching on who gave blows to the other. Neither man was leaving unscathed. Roger's nose was bloody and Garp's lip was busted open. Both were covered in scratches and bruises. Littered in injuries that the other had inflicted on them.

Just as it seemed like Garp was almost closing in on Roger, a shout of, "Garp! We have to go! We have to leave now if you want to make it on time!"

Garp stopped, pausing as he noticed the smirk on Roger's face. He was laughing again as he waved, "Until next time, Garp! It's been fun!"

Garp was stunned. 'Fun?!' For a moment, he contemplated before he was turning on his heel and starting back towards his ship. 'I'll get you next time, Roger.'

The memory disappeared within the mist, leaving just Marineford around them again as the confrontation settled down. Rouge sighed, looked bored for a second, "I was expecting you two to go full out."

"We were in a town full of civilians!" Garp exclaimed, "Even he knew that!"

Rouge shrugged, "Feels anticlimactic." She added.

"Geez, when did you get a love for violence?" Garp questioned.

Rouge huffed, "I didn't, but seriously though, you two were tame."

"We were in a town." Garp grumbled. "I'm sure you'll see us go full out at some point." He paused for a second, looking at Rouge in surprise, "Wait, you want to see how we fought each other." Rouge smiled. "You brat." Garp added, sighing as he rubbed a palm over his face. "You could have just said that."

Ace smiled as the conversation went on but the memory world around them had warped again, settling back on Dawn Island. This time at the bar where Shay was sitting among the others. It was clear she was even further along than before.

Shay was sitting back, leaning back in her chair as she rubbed a hand over her swollen stomach. A grimace coming to her face a second later. It was clear that she was attempting to hide it, breathing through the pain as she leaned back. She almost looked a bit like a kid as she kicked her legs back and forth. Letting them sway without ever touching the ground.

The others were sitting around her, all either eating or drinking something. All of them having a good time. Shay had stopped grimacing, relaxing once more as she sighed.

"Is she okay?" Luffy questioned.

Ace knew immediately what was happening. They had time jumped in the memories again. The Omega just nodded, humming as Law interjected with, "She's in labor."

"How can you tell?" Luffy questioned, tilting his head slightly. That was right, Luffy technically had never seen someone in labor before. While Ace couldn't completely remember it, he could recall Shanks' scent had spiked when he had gone into labor with Luffy. He was so young, but he could still remember that scent. It was radiating off of Shay. It still surprised him that they could pick up someone's scent like that. Even in memory.

"Well, her contractions. She makes a face each time she has one. They are timed almost perfectly together." Law stated. "She also has a spike of her pheromones indicating that her body is preparing for labor. It's the difference between say a Beta woman and Omegas. Betas don't have that spike like Omegas do."

Luffy made something close to a "hmph" noise as their attention had moved back to the memories. Ace found himself leaning into Marco's side as the memory progressed.

Makoto was the first to notice out of the ones sitting there, eyeing Shay for a moment as he said, "Shay-sama? Are you okay?" Makoto questioned.

Shay just smiled, "I'm fine."

"I noticed this earlier." Katsuki stated.

Makoto looked over to Shay in shock as a smile came to his face. "How long?"

Shay shook her head, "In the last hour or so… maybe every fifteen minutes?" Shay didn't sound sure, but it also sounded like she was trying to downplay it.

"Shay-sama!" Makoto exclaimed, setting his glass to the side as he looked down at Shay's swollen stomach.

"No! No!" Shay shot back, "I'm not due for another couple of weeks!"

"Shay-sama, hate to break it you, but you're in labor." Makoto stated.

"They say Doctors make the worst patients." Katsuki mused, moving from his spot, and moving towards Shay's with a grin on his face.

Shay continued to let the denials as Makoto and Katsuki both moved to help her up. "Let's go."

"I—" Shay started, shaking her head as for a moment, the surprise and denial still remained, "Garp isn't here!"

"I'll call him!" Woop Slap interjected, getting up from his spot and immediately starting off.

"Don't worry about that! Let's think about you right now, Shay-sama!" Makoto exclaimed as the two started moving towards the direction of the small doctor's office.

The mist settled again as the silence came across the battlefield. So, it was time for one of them to be born now. Ace looked over to Rouge and Dragon. There was a moment, he hoped he wouldn't have to see it. He knew how vulnerable childbirth could be. Shanks had told him as much. The person giving birth was basically revealed to most people, they were in a lot of pain, pushing a child out of their body. It was not a moment to broadcast. It was a moment that should be shared between the parents. Not just for anyone.

Maybe, he was just self conscious at the thought.

What if this had been him?

Rouge and Shanks might also have their most private moments shared and still there was a moment that Ace felt guilty. He kept trying to let the reassurances stay at the forefront of his mind, but it was hard. It's what he had to keep reminding himself.

All of this was for him. For his life.

He was going to let them do it. Even if he tried to change his mind now, he was positive that none of the others involved would allow for him to say no now. He could think that there was a bright side to this. He was no longer chained to the scaffold and he wasn't helpless as this was happening. All of their secrets were going to be out in the open. For a moment, he thought about Shanks. How he always seemed to have something up his sleeve.

Then it hit him.

They were doing this on purpose.

The world wanted him dead for the belief of being Gol D. Roger's son. He had heard all the things that people had said about the man. They were going to see him from the view of others who had actually met him. They had already seen some small moments that even left Marines surprised. Surprised to see that Roger could do something that wasn't heartless. How he saved an entire ship of slaves and the life of a young boy who had been drugged and overdosed.

Ace let out a laugh of disbelief. How did he not notice? Roger wasn't the only thing. It also meant showing why they all decided to be pirates or Revolutionaries. There was so much to show the world within their very memories.

If he was being honest, maybe he would even get some of the answers that he had wished he had known for a long time.

How did he not realize it sooner?
