Summary: Harry has always been thrusted into a life which he never wanted to live, all he wanted was to be a normal boy with a loving family, what if Harry is given a chance to actually have his dream. How will Harry grow if he doesn't have to deal with dark lords, death eaters and constant threat to his life. What if he used all his worth to learn magic, and just have fun. AU, Non BWL Harry, Neutral Potters.
Last time on Normalcy is Divine:
Cygnus is the same age as Neville, I will make sure he doesn't get roped into fighting for the good cause crap.' This is the only responsibility that Harry was prepared to shoulder, the only thing he would worry about in Hogwarts would be making sure Cygnus does not befriend Neville and to extension stay the fuck away from war.
Other than that he was going to enjoy his new life to the fullest, and would do all the things he never could in his other life. Who wants an extraordinary life, when you can have a normal one.
"Normalcy is indeed Divine!"
A month had passed since Harry was back from the hospital. Once given all green from the healer, he was finally allowed to do whatever he wanted. Throughout the month he had seen almost all the memories of this life, learned everything he could about the world he had landed in. The new memories had settled in his mind seamlessly, and had actually helped him a lot with regards to checking his emotions and not reacting strangely to the differences of this world.
Talking about differences, there were not as many as he had expected. Most wizarding families had the same allegiance as their counterparts in his old world. The only difference was the way they treated him and his family.
Potters of this world were a very well respected and feared family, the enormous amount of wealth, the connections throughout the world, their history cloaked in rumors about their enemies disappearing, and them profiting off funding the wars, made people sought out their favours for generations.
Harry throughout his memories could see how the wizarding Britain sucked up to his family. Adults went out of their way to be in his and his brother's good graces and forced their children to befriend him. He has always hated this, and it hasn't changed in his new life either. He hated attending all these gatherings and social events, but his parents had made it clear that he would have to attend.
'Appearances are important' his father had told him when he was younger. No matter how much he hated it, Harry couldn't deny the fact, and his mother being a socialite and sort of a social activist, he couldn't avoid it either.
The thought about his mother brought a huge smile on his face. Throughout the month-long reviewing and integration of the new memories in his head had completely superimposed the image of Narcissa as his mother. He just couldn't deny it anymore, her doting nature, her kindness, her strictness, the love she had for his father, the love he could feel for her had completely overtaken his memories of Lily.
He was interrupted from his thoughts by a knock on his door. The door then opened to reveal a grinning Sirius with 2 brooms in his hand.
"Heya prongslet! Come on, it's time for your quidditch practice. We gonna make a pro out of you, then maybe England can finally win the damn world cup." Sirius had taken upon himself to train Harry after seeing the newfound skills on the broom. When asked he simply replied "can't let that talent go to waste! England is in dire need of good players."
Harry was really surprised when Sirius actually turned into a hardcore coach. He expected some tomfoolery and a casual game or two, but this was brutal. Not even Moody had pushed him so hard. According to Sirius, the game was religion and the pitch it's holy ground, and thus he had to be absolutely focused and determined there.
"We should bring Cygnus as well, you could teach him some maneuvers while I do the drills." commented Harry, as he changed into his quidditch clothes. Harry had expected his brother to take a lot of time to warm up to him, but convincing his father to let him ride the brooms and sneaking some chocolates had made his younger brother adore him.
"That is one thing I wanted to ask, how is it that all of a sudden you don't have any problems with your brother? Not that I am complaining, but you two could never be in the same room without fighting."
Harry was not expecting this line of questioning, but he decided it was best if he came forward with the truth. "Uncle Siri, I always disliked Cygnus because I felt he stole mum and dad and you and uncle moony from me, mum always spent more time with him and everything was all about him." He said softly as he watched Sirius' face cover with worry.
Before his uncle could say anything, he continued "But since the incident and the hospital stay, I realised all of you still love me, I saw mum crying, and everyone looked so worried, then I also realised that I was just being mean to him, that's why I am trying to be a good brother to him."
Sirius stared at him for a couple of seconds, then a huge grin broke out on his face. "First things first, never doubt about our love for you, your mum and dad, they love you very much. I still remember how happy they both were when you were born, your father couldn't stop bouncing, he must have hugged about a hundred people in the hospital" he said with a laugh.
" And secondly, I am really proud of you Harry, this is a very mature way of thinking. Always remember family comes first Harry!" Sirius finished as he ruffled his nephew's hair.
"Let's get Cygnus as well, we should also invite some of your friends" continued Sirius as he moved towards the door.
" Um, Sirius, I don't really have friends" said Harry, he didn't know why but he felt embarrassed admitting to the fact. He saw his godfather's head snap back towards him with an inquiring gaze.
" All the kids my age, they all act way too stuffy, their parents force them to be friendly to me and they all talk to me very formally. Like how they talk to you or dad, it really gets so boring, and the first chance they get, they just leave me alone." He said with a hint of disgust in his voice. Harry's disgust was actually directed towards the parents instead of the children themselves.
He saw his Godfather standing there for few moments, before he sat on the chair with a sigh. "Believe it or not Harry, I totally understand what you mean. In Fact your father also went through the same thing. Did I ever tell you how me and your father became friends?" Seeing his godson nod negatively Sirius continued "My parents always told me to befriend the Potter heir in all the social gatherings, and me being me decided to do absolutely opposite of what they said and I never once talked to your father." He said with a small smile.
"Infact, the first time I actually talked to your father was on Hogwarts express, when he entered my compartment? Before this I always thought him to be a pompous git, and when he just entered without knocking or asking my permission, I started shouting at him and threatened him that I would change his hair to pink" Sirius finished with a laugh.
"But then how did you guys become such great friends?" This was indeed shocking to Harry, he had heard a different version of it after all.
"Well, when I threatened him, he just laughed. I could not believe the gall of this man, who just laughed, but before I could do anything he said 'so you like pranks as well huh?' and by the end of train ride, we were best friends, Moony also joined us and the three marauders were unbreakable from that point." Sirius said with a longing smile on his face.
"So my little nephew, you don't really have to worry about making friends now, because once you go to hogwarts you will be with many kids your age and I am sure you will find true friends also" Harry didn't really pay attention to the last part, as his mind was focused on the story shared by Sirius. There was absolutely no mention of Pettigrew!
There was no doubt in Harry's mind that the way Sirius told the story, he wasn't hiding anything or omitting any part, so there was a big chance that Pettigrew was never a part of marauders. Deciding to think about it later, Harry couldn't help but ask "So did mum also threaten dad?"
Sirius gave a bark-like laugh as he answered "Well it's a long story, after our sixth year, I invited James to my house, to spend the first couple of weeks of holidays. There he talked to your mum for the first time and he immediately fell in love with her. At that time your father and I both had a reputation with the ladies, and your mum hated your father for that. After that, he followed her like a lost puppy and tried to talk to her all the time but she never gave him the time of day."
" Then in our seventh year, everyone met the new James Potter, who was less cocky, more focused in his classes and had eyes only for your mother, daily he would ask her out, only to be rejected, finally, one month before graduation, your mother agreed to go on a date and rest is history."
The love story of his parents here was quite similar to the story of his parents from other life, but still hearing his Godfather reminiscence the older days brought a smile to his face. Sirius really loved his parents, they were his family after all. His thoughts were going on a tangent, when he realised he was an eight year old boy who should be very curious about things.
"Uncle Siri, what reputation did you have with ladies?" Harry asked innocently
"Oh, we were considered the snog kings of Hogwarts" Sirius said distractedly as he remembered his youth.
"What is a snog? Is it like a prank?" Harry asked with a fake excitement in his voice, it took all his self control to not outright laugh at the question.
Sirius was broken from his trip down the memory lane when he heard the question. "Well Harry i think you are too young to know what snogging is, and i can't tell you or else your mum would skin me alive, but I promise to teach you all about it when you get older." Finished Sirius as he expertly avoided answering his nephew's curiosity.
"Anyways, we have wasted enough time already, let's get you brother and start our training session" Sirius said as he ushered Harry out of his room.
Later that evening, the Potter clan and Sirius were sitting around the dining table for dinner. Casual conversation and humor graced the table as everyone talked about their day.
"So Harry, Sirius tells me that you have been training hard with him. If you keep up this dedication, I am sure you will help England win the world cup in the coming years." James said enthusiastically as he praised his eldest son.
"Boys and your quidditch! Harry has to grow up to be a respectable wizard too!" Exclaimed Narcissa
"How dare you!" Exclaimed Sirius mildly offended at the notion. "I'll have you know, Quidditch players are massively respectable wizards!" All he got was a scoff from his cousin.
"Nevertheless, no son of mine will grow up to be a broom head without any knowledge of magic! From tomorrow, You will start your lessons in core subjects and no, I don't want to hear any protest. Soon you will be going to Hogwarts, and will be representing both houses of Potter and black. There are things expected of you and I will make sure you are ready for it." Narcissa said with a voice of finality.
Harry was more than happy to spend more time with his mother, although learning basic material again was going to be very boring, still he could breeze through it with his 'superior intelligence'. He looked at his uncle cum Godfather and decided to prank him a little.
"Sure mum, with you teaching me magic and Uncle Siri teaching me quidditch and snogging, I will be the best student in Hogwarts!"
"That's right my so- WHAT?" Narcissa almost screamed as her brain caught upto what her eldest son had just said. She looked towards her cousin, who just sat there with a dumb stricken look on his face. Her wand was immediately in her hand, but Sirius had been quicker as he just jumped from his seat and ran towards the floo
"Come back here you insolent troll! How dare you corrupt my son! Sirius Orion Black I will skin you alive the next time I get my hands on you!"
Harry watched his mother chase after his godfather with amusement clear as a day in his eyes, but soon he felt dread as his mother returned to the dining room, with fury across her face. He couldn't help but gulp at the sight of her angry mother. Maybe he should avoid involving her in his pranks. He looked towards his father who now was the target of his mother's ire. James kept trying to calm his wife down while she just kept on ranting about the man-child of a cousin she had.
'Having a loving family was truly the greatest gift a man can have' Harry thought as he helped himself and his brother to a few more servings of the food.
Soon Harry's days have fallen into a routine, his lessons with his mother and Sirius kept him busy for most of the time. His father had also started teaching him about the Potter financial empire; he was expected to take over it later in his life after all. Harry had every intention of passing the responsibility to his younger brother if he so desired.
The Ministry yule ball had brought along quite a few surprises, this was the first time he had met Cedric Diggory in this life, and he seemed to be just as easy going as he remembered him from his past life. To Harry's relief he had not seemed intimidated by the Potter name and Harry had finally made a friend. On the other hand, he was surprised to meet a young yaxley heir. When introduced, he expected him to be a typical pure blood heir of a dark family, but instead he met what could only be described as a young Sirius Black.
Septimus Yaxley was the black sheep of his flock, the lack of poised manners, blue eyes filled with mischief and the way he would puff up his chest with pride whenever his family members would look at him disappointedly made Harry absolutely adore him. To his credit Harry had surprised the Yaxley heir as well when he tried to bring him in conversation with Cedric about football of all things.
A few light hearted taunts, lots of banter and a lot of laughter had made the three young heirs very good friends with each other. Septimus was delighted to not only find like minded people his age but he also noticed how most people in the hall glanced at the trio. 'Associating with light family, and creating raucous with the Potter heir! Mum is going to be pissed!' he thought with a smirk as he continued enjoying his evening with his new friends. If he was honest with himself, meeting these two felt like a gift from mother magic herself.
Oh how it had all gone wrong, Septimus Yaxley couldn't believe it! He had expected his family to throw another fit about him associating with blood traitors and tarnishing the Yaxley name in front of the most influential people in Britain all the while dragging poor Potter heir in his shenanigans, but instead here was his mother bragging about how great of an heir he was. His grandfather had actually smiled at him, and told him that he was proud of him. Within 24 hours, he had gone from the most hated to the most loved family member. What's the bloody big deal about Harry inviting him over to his place? He could not understand why his cousins have been so jealous of him? Or why would his mother shout out to the world about him spending a day with his new friends. His family was really weird. Well at least he could rub in the fact that he was going to the muggle world to see one of their sports, that's the only consolation he was going to get.
Septimus exited the floo to see the grandiose of the main hall of Potter manor. It was big, far bigger than his house, he didn't understand why they still call it a manor, when it was clearly built more like a castle. From the window he could see vast lands, a quidditch pitch, and a few buildings that looked like stables and barns.
"Glad you could make it septi" he snapped around to see his new friend walking towards him, wearing what he guessed was muggle clothing. "Did I not make it clear enough that we would be going to the muggle world? Those clothes won't do, my friend." Before he could protest, he was led to another wing, where he entered a room, which he guessed was Harry's, which actually turned out to be his wardrobe. "Okay so the muggle clothing is on the right side of the room, pick whatever you want, but please don't touch my underwear" Septimus grinned at the poor attempt at a joke.
Soon he was fitted into new clothes and was back to the main hall, where they were supposed to wait for Lord Potter, yet again he was surprised at how easily he could slip in conversation with Harry. He was exceptionally glad that they were the same age, they would wreak havoc at Hogwarts, he could just hope they would be sorted in the same house. He was interrupted from his thoughts by the arrival of Lord Potter. He immediately got on his feet, and placed his fisted hand on his heart, and gave a deep bow to greet the lord of a greater house. No matter how much his family and the pureblood customs irritated the hell out of him, he wasn't stupid enough to disrespect the Potter Lord.
"Hahaha, None of that stuffy pureblood nonsense Septimus, we are here in an informal setting and moreover you are here to have fun with my son, plus I say you are too young to actually get involved in this house business, so just loosen up!" Harry couldn't help but laugh at the Yaxley heir, as the image of his father had suddenly shattered for Septimus. Harry could clearly see worship in his eyes for his father, as Septimus nodded excitedly like a house elf.
"So listen carefully boys, unfortunately we none of us could make it to the game due to an emergency session of Wizengamot, so I have hired these two gentlemen behind me as your bodyguards, Do not go anywhere without them, I have also informed Highbury of your arrival, so expect more security there, though you will be seated in the box. Now we will floo to our house in Stratford, where you will then go to Highbury by a car, remember the only wizards you are going to meet after this are the two gentlemen standing behind me. I contacted Amos, and he said his son will directly meet you in the box. Any questions?" James finished as he layed out all the instructions.
"Um, what's highbury and what is a car?" Septimus didn't understand why the two Potter's would laugh at such an innocent question.
The day was full of my surprises. Septimus couldn't believe how advanced muggles were, though they lacked magic, but these things, these metallic concoctions they had invented boggled his mind. He absolutely loved these huge metallic structures on wheels. 'Cars' as Harry had called them. They were so comfortable, and boy could they go fast. Harry had shown him something called a Ferrari, apparently those were supposed to be the 'nimbus' of cars, and he could clearly see why. They were clearly built differently and looked way more impressive than the others he had seen on the way.
While he didn't really understand the game, he soon got in the spirit of it, as he cheered on the boys in red along with his friends and the rest of the stadium. 'Quidditch fans could really learn a thing or two' he thought as he sang along with the thousands of other supporters. While it would take time for him to understand the intricacies of the game, despite his friends explaining to the best of their abilities, Septimus was sure in his mind that he was now a proud Gooner.
Over the course of next few months, presence of the Yaxley heir became a normal sight at the Potter manor. He in fact spent more time here than at his own home. He even joined in the quidditch lessons given by Sirius. Everybody in the Potter household could see the friendship between the two and was quite supportive of it. While Cedric couldn't join them as often, when the three of them were together, anyone could see the making of the new generation of marauder trio.
For the next couple of years, their life mostly consisted of learning magic, practicing quidditch and coming up with pranks and mischief in general. The duo had never missed a single match of Arsenal, they supported the team religiously. Bad mouthing Alan Smith, was considered a cardinal sin for Septimus Yaxley, as proven when a Manchester United supporter was on the receiving end of some very colorful words, courtesy of the Yaxley heir.
Harry had also been on a few family trips to America, India, Australia and on the continent, while most were just for fun and for them to spend as much time together as possible, his father would also take him to the different holdings and businesses in different countries, so he could learn the workings of the Potter conglomerate. The more he learned about it, the more he wished his younger brother would step up and take the job from him.
While the lessons from his father and uncle were tiresome, sometimes boring and predictable, the lessons with his mother were totally unexpected. While he didn't have a wand to practice spells, his classes were focused on subjects that didn't require a wand. His most hated subject was slowly becoming his most loved one. He never knew about such deep theory that went into potion brewing.
Harry had absolutely no doubt in mind that his mother was indeed a potion mistress. She had thoroughly explained the uses of different motions of stirring or the use of changing intensity of heat applied. Harry was shocked to learn that all the ingredients had certain properties in their inherit nature, which makes them useful for certain potion. Snape was clearly a jackass of a teacher, and Harry now truly believed he would have loved the potions if he was given proper education.
Since coming to this new world, Harry has been nothing but happy, he had a loving family, great friends, more wealth than he could imagine, and a very peaceful life. If he was being serious, he actually focused on quidditch more than anything, so one day he could turn professional. On the other hand the library in the manor had some of the very rare and old books on magic. On going through them, Harry realised there was still so much he didn't know about his natural gift.
Magic was the most studied and researched subject in the wizarding world, and still nobody had an accurate explanation for it. There were as many theories as the number of authors. There were still so many mysteries that were yet to be uncovered. Harry had dedicated every free hour of his day to study the works on the subject. It was just so fascinating to him, Harry had realised that wizards in general were so used to magic around them that they did not study the functionality behind it. Why would they? If they were getting result, why else would they waste their time? Harry was ashamed to admit it, but he was the same, in his past life, his desire to learn everything about magic slowly dwindled as years went on, but he had another chance now. He was going to use it to his full advantage.
These last few years really felt like a strange dream for him, Harry truly loved this life. He knew he was being a little too selfish and obtuse, but he didn't miss his old life, he just didn't. His parents, his uncle, his brother and now his new friends had more than filled the void in him.
Harry was lying on his bed, thinking about the birthday party he had last night. Turning eleven was a big deal in the wizarding world, and hence his parents had invited nearly everyone of repute in the British wizarding world. He was surprised to see the minister of magic himself there, but then he realised his family name really did carry a lot of weight.
While his birthday had been amazing, it was absolutely nothing on how they celebrated his best friend's birthday. The lucky sod's birthday was on the exact same day as the last match of the premier league, which happened to be the deciding match for the title. The night was something else, Arsenal winning the league, Septimus' birthday, and his father's presence which let them meet the team and actually click photographs with the players and the cup in their dressing room. Indeed, birth of Septimus Yaxley was very very auspicious day.
Harry turned its head when he heard soft taps on the window, to see a brown barn owl pecking the window from outside. He untied the letter see Hogwarts seal on the back of the envelope he flipped it to see it was addressed to him.
Mr. Hadrian James Potter-Black
Second largest room
Family wing
Potter Manor
Berkshire
'Guess it's finally time to start my magical journey' thought Harry as he read through the contents of the letter.
To be continued…
