Time jump: A few hours later
Craigen watched Chapel storm out of the interrogation room, slamming the door behind him as his teammates pushed him away. Looking down at the video feed he actually felt bad for the man. Barba sat himself up, spitting the blood that pooled in his mouth. Chapel had gone mad after Barba once again refused to answer his question.
In reality, they had nothing on him. No proof that he was the one responsible for killing the rookie cop. For all, they knew it could have been one of his men. Many were there to witness the cop hit Olivia. Running a hand over his head he sighed in frustration. Craigen knew Olivia was pissed at him. She truly believed he didn't care what happened to her, but that was far from the truth. He cared for her as a father would. All he wanted was all of this over so he could take her back home. He just wanted her safe.
That night he couldn't intervene no matter how much he wanted. He couldn't show her any affection or unwanted attention. It would have brought up too many questions they couldn't answer. So he turned a blind eye.
Glancing back at the laptop he watched the man. Barba had not spoken since they left the manor. He refused any food or water they gave him. Chapel taunted and insulted him, trying to get a rise. There was only one moment where Barba flinched and that was when Chapel mentioned his daughter and Olivia. But that was it. If they wanted to charge him with something, they needed to hurry. If he knew Olivia as well as he did, she's already looking for a way to get him out.
"Cap." Amaro slowly stood from his desk, the others following the motion.
Craigen looked up scoffing softly to himself. "Of course, she would."
Olivia stepped out of the elevator with a small army behind her. She stopped in the middle of the hallway, her eyes coldly scanning the station. Behind her stood a handful of Rafael's men. One of them stood just behind her, with a coat in his hands. Turning her head just enough to see the lawyer, he nodded making his way towards Craigen.
"What's this?" Craigen took the file handed to him.
"Should be enough for you to let Rafael go." Olivia's voice was cold, her eyes aiming at her target. "Should that not be enough, I have a court order signed by a judge ordering the immediate release of Rafael Barba."
Rollins snatched the paper from her hands. "What he have on the judge?"
Olivia chuckled. "All I did was show him the exact file in your hand." Looking around she frowned at not seeing Chapel. "Where's Chapel? I sure hope he isn't the one interrogating Rafael."
"Why would that matter?" Amaro asked.
"There is an order of restraint against the captain and the Barba family. Should the captain violet the order he will be arrested." The lawyer was quick to respond. "Now, if you would be so kind as to release my client."
"Fin, bring him out." Craigen ordered.
Olivia turned to the men behind her. "Get the cars ready to go."
The one holding the coat nodded. "Yes ma'am." He froze catching sight of Barba being let out. "What the fuck?!"
"Jesus para!" Barba stopped the young man from going after Fin.
"Para?!" Jesus squealed. "They-"
"Didn't do anything." Barba cut him off. "The detectives didn't touch me. This was all Chapel."
Olivia grabbed the coat handed to her and held it to Rafael. "Cars are waiting."
Putting the coat on he turned to his lawyer. "You know what to do, handle it before tomorrow." Sliding his hand over his side, he grimaced at the pain emitting from there. "Let's go I'm in need of a hot bath." He was startled by Olivia's hands grabbing his face. "Liv?"
"You have a busted lip." She muttered to herself. "Bruised jawline as well."
Placing his hand over hers, he pulled it down to his lips. "I'm fine." Kissing the inside of her hand, he lowered it to his side. "I've had far worse than this." Looking around he raised a brow at the number of Angelicos with her. "You brought an army."
"We were planning on storming the place if they didn't let you go." She joked.
"What the hell is going on here?" Chapel walked back into the bullpen. "I'm not finished with you." Before he could reach for the gang lord, Jesus got between them. "Move."
"We have a court order for his release." Olivia spoke up.
Chapel grabbed the file only to toss it aside. "The officer died after he insulted your vieja. You don't take lightly to that Rafael."
"Perhaps, but I was nowhere near that officer after last night." Barba shrugged. "Now, if you will excuse me I will be going home."
"Maybe drop the obsession towards Rafael and actually be a cop and do your job." Picking up the file she slammed it against Chapel's chest. "I told you he'd be home before dinner."
Fin leaned into Craigen with a light chuckle as his partner walked into the elevator. "Now that was badass."
"That was reckless." Craigen snapped. "She's becoming rouge."
"Come on cap, it's Liv we're talking about." Fin wasn't sure what to think of his reaction. "They wanted her close to him and judging by the mark on her neck, she's done that. They wanted her to gain his trust, it's clear she's done that too. We've taken dozen of shipments and getting closer to nailing him. So what is she swirls from the straight line? She's doing what they wanted."
"That straight line is what keeps her safe. It's what keeps her in our line of vision." Amaro chimed in. "We don't know what her next move will be this way."
"That's why Elliot is there." Fin sighed. "He'll keep an eye on her. Let her do this her way. If there is something I learned in my UC days is lose the leash. You try and tighten that leash you will get her killed."
Stepping out of the building Barba laughed at the number of men standing outside. "Did you leave any of them back home?"
"I wasn't joking about storming the building."
Helping her into the SUV, he climbed in after her. "The kids?"
"Not aware of anything. Jack is with his fiancé. Allison is at a friend's house, I'm picking her up later tonight. Damon is at home, but he's been locked in his room all day." Leaning over she pulled his coat open. "Your side hurts?"
"Chapel didn't hold back the punches." He stop mid chuckle wincing.
Unbuttoning his shirt, she untucked his undershirt and raised it up. His right side was bruised, but there didn't appear to be any other damage. "A hot bath will soothe that."
"Will you be joining me?"
Looking up she rolled her eyes at the smirk on his lips. "You'll get hurt."
"Mm, a little pain is always good." Grabbing her jaw, he pulled her down for a kiss. "It lets me know I'm still alive." Sliding a hand around her waist he hauled her over him. Pulling her left leg over his lap, he forced her to straddle him. "Because sometimes this feels too good to be true."
She quickly stopped his hands from reaching her jeans. "None of that until that bruise of completely gone."
Tossing his head back with a groan, he prevented her from climbing off him. "At least stay like this until we get home." Giving in with a huff, she laid her head on his shoulder. "Thank you."
"For what?"
"This. I don't think I have ever had someone storm a station and demand I am released." Barba chuckled.
"Hmm, if not me then who else?" Reaching for the necklace he wore she played with it aimlessly. "Did you do it?"
"Do what?"
Placing a hand on his chest, she braced herself up. "Did you kill that cop?"
Barba clenched his jaw, looking straight at her. "Would you believe me if I told you I didn't?"
Looking into his green eyes she tried reading him. Not trusting someone had become second nature to her. Ever since she joined the SVU she learned everyone lied. But as she looked at Barba she found nothing that told her he was lying to her. His guard was down. "Yes."
"I didn't kill that cop. I don't know who did it or why he was killed." Barba was being truthful to her. Did he care? No. "I thought about it. After seeing him put his hands on you, I wanted to. But someone beat me to it."
"Sir, we're here." The driver pulled up next to the steps by the house. Javier opened the door for them.
Olivia climbed off him blushing at the look she got from Javier. "Shut up."
"I'm not saying anything." Javier choked on his laugh. "Couldn't wait for that ride huh?"
"Me?!" She didn't if she should be offended by that comment. "I had to keep him restraint."
"Any word from Ryan?" Barba regretted the moment he jumped out of the car.
Javier shook his head. "No, but we have a problem with tonight's shipment."
"Is this a must-be there problem?"
"Yes."
"You need to lay back for a moment." Olivia reminded him. "You can barely walk."
"I'm fine." Gone was the playful and cuddly man from the car. Barba had switched to the man many feared. "I'm going to take a shower and get out of these clothes. Have whoever is the problem in my office by the time I am done."
Olivia huffed at the stubbornness in that man. "Fine hurt yourself, I'm on my way to pick up Allison."
"Liv, take Jesus with you." Barba motioned to the driver.
"I will be fine." Snatching the keys from Jesus, she jogged towards the driver's side. "Javier, call me if he overdoes himself."
"Have you meant the man?"
Knocking on the door she was greeted by Allison's friend's mom Melinda. "Hi, is she ready to go?"
"Yeah, they are just packing their stuff away." Leasing them into the kitchen she offered Olivia a glass of water. "How have you been?"
"Good."
"That's good."
Tapping her fingers on the countertop, Olivia dreaded coming here. At first, Melinda was kind and welcoming whenever Olivia came to pick Allison up. But recently she was acting awkwardly. Take now, for instance, Melinda refused to look directly at her. She was over-friendly and even over-polite at times.
The vibration on her phone came as a saving grace. Looking at the screen she was faced with Elliot's name flashing.
E: Call Craigen. There is a shipment going down tonight. Rafael will be there to oversee it.
Olivia rolled her eyes. 'So much for not overdoing it.' Excusing herself for a moment, she walked out of the house and dialed Craigen's number.
'Olivia?'
"Yeah, ther-" She hesitated for a moment. Every fiber of her body was yelling not to do it. She knew the consequences for Rafael getting caught. It was her job. It was the reason she was here.
'Liv?'
"Yeah, there's a shipment coming in tonight." Her chest felt heavy with pressure. "Barba will be there over-"
Windows shattered as bullets hit the house. Dropping to the ground, she covered her head as they continued to shoot. Looking towards the street Olivia caught sight of a black sedan speeding away. She could hear Craigen calling for her through the phone, but as she jumped up only thought one thing.
Was Allison okay?
Running into the house, she yelled for the girl. Getting no response Olivia ran across the kitchen and into the living room. "Allison?!" Opening every door in the house, she pushed open the last one finding the two girls huddled together. "Oh, you're alright." Falling in front of them, she pulled them into her arms. "You're alright."
"We bunker down as soon as we heard the shots." Allison's voice trembled from both the adrenaline and fear. "What happened?"
"I don't-"
"My mom!" Kate took off running yelling for her mom.
"Wait!" Olivia attempted to stop her, but the girl was fast. "Kate?!" Entering the kitchen she ground the girl frozen. Getting closer she looked over the girl's head to find Melinda dead on the kitchen floor. Reacting quickly she covered the girl's eyes and pulled her into her arms. "Come let's go outside."
It didn't take long for Craigen and what part of the squad could to show up. Chapel and his team were following closely, ordering the officers on scene to secure the area. Olivia sat behind an ambulance with both girls at her side wrapped in the same blanket. Even Mother Nature was aware of the tragedy that had happened when she started pouring on them. A loud commotion caused the two girls to stiff beside her.
"Move!" Barba's angry voice boomed like thunder.
"Sir, this is an active crime scene." A young rookie clearly not knowing who he was talking to, kept him away from his goal. "You ca-"
"You have three seconds to let me through." His tone dropped to a deathly calming one. "That is my wife and daughter!"
Craigen was the one to step up and save the poor kid. "Let him through."
Pushing the kid aside, he jogged toward the three females. "Allison. Liv."
"Daddy!" At that moment being held by her father, the teenager was long gone. In her place was the little girl in need of her father's protection.
"You two alright?" Cupping his daughter's face, he searched for any harm done to her. "Either of you hurt?"
Olivia shook her head. "No we are fine, but-" Looking down at Kate she tilted her head. "Melinda didn't make it."
Letting Allison take her seat back by Olivia, he kneeled in front of the girl. "Kate, lo siento."
Her eyes began to water. "Why would anyone want to kill her?"
"I don't know cariño, but I promise we will find whoever did this." Caressing her cheek, he offered her a small smile. "Until your dad gets back, you will be staying with us." Turning to Olivia, he took her arm and pulled her away from the girls. "Are you hurt?"
"No." Grabbing the back of her neck, he pulled her into his arms. It was then that Olivia noticed just how soaked his clothes were. "Why are you soaked?"
"I ran out of the house when I heard." He stated in the most obvious tone of voice.
She was stunned. "You ran from the house to here?"
Barba nodded. "Jesus called me. He went after the shooters."
She didn't know what to say to that. This man ran nearly 2 miles to get here. "You're are a great dad."
Barba scrunched his brows together. "It wasn't just because of Allison."
"Hmm?"
"Liv, the moment Jesus told me what happened, I was scared for both of you. I don't want to lose either one." Cupping her jaw, Barba kissed her softly on the lips.
Neither were aware of the detectives staring at them. Elliot had pulled up with Rollins and Javier to pick them up. Sharing a look with Craigen they both agreed.
They needed to pull her out.
