Maura Isles took a step back and took a good look at the woman she knew as Clem. And then she realized her weekend lover was a hooker. Call girl. Lady of the evening. Even worse, a street walker. She went from shocked to pissed.
"You're a hooker?" She stepped in close to Clem and hissed, "I slept with a hooker? I gave myself to a hooker?" She didn't wait for Clem to answer. "Is this what you meant by public service? Who paid you?" Her mind flashed through her conversation with her mother. "Did my mother send you?"
Jane was completely blindsided by everything Thea was saying, but she knew she needed to shut her up fast.
"Thea, can we please go somewhere and talk?" She gave her one time lover a sad and pleading look.
Against her best effort, Thea felt her resolve slipping. This woman needed her help. Before she could change her mind, she nodded and motioned toward the elevators.
As Jane was about to ask why they were going to the elevators, she heard her last name being called.
"Rizzoli! Rizzoli!"
She turned to see her lieutenant trying to get her attention. She shoved Thea into the elevator and called out, "I'll be back in less than 10 minutes!"
She hadn't realized Thea had hit the button for the basement until the door closed. Before she could say anything, Thea started in on her again.
"They know you by name here? How many times have you been arrested?!" She shook her head, formulating a plan. "It doesn't matter. We can get you off the street and get your life turned around. Ok?"
The doors opened and Jane watched as Thea went to the ME's office and unlocked the door, ushering her in. She quickly shut it and stood, hands on hips, looking up at the woman she knew every inch of body.
"Thea, shut up! I am not now, nor have I ever been a hooker. I am a detective with the joint Vice-Drug Crimes Unit. I am undercover. On Monday, I start my new job as a homicide detective." She flopped down on the couch and took a deep breath. "My real name is Det. Jane Rizzoli." She looked around and then back at Thea. "Why do you have a key to the new chief medical examiner's office? I think his name is Isles. Dr. Isles."
"I am Dr. Isles. Dr. Maura Isles, and this is my new office. I started this Monday." She looked at the woman she now knew was named Jane and started to laugh, hysterically. Jane began to laugh as well and soon they were rolling on the couch, laughing until they cried.
Wiping her eyes, Jane stood up and told Maura she had to get a move on. Maura nodded, dried her eyes, and then shut her office door. The sadness of the last few days had lifted and she spent the rest of the day in a haze of bliss.
Jane also felt lighter and did a quick background on Dr. Isles to get her address. She was going to swing by after work and see where, if anywhere, they might go as a...couple. Or something.

That night
Maura had done some snooping of her own and found out that Jane Rizzoli was the youngest detective in department history, male or female, had been first in her academy class, had a stellar reputation and was known for her tenacity. It was because of this last trait that Maura was fairly certain the detective would be stopping by that night. As such, she had hurried home, started dinner, changed the sheets on her bed, and shaved her legs.
She had just taken the roast out of the oven when her doorbell rang. Taking a deep breath she opened the door and was not surprised to see a fresh faced Jane Rizzoli on her doorstep. They smiled at each other like goofy high schoolers until Maura waved her in.
"I just took dinner out of the oven. Would you like some? It's a roast."
"Sure."
They stood staring at each other for a few moments, before they both moved into each others waiting arms. Jane picked Maura up, who wrapped her legs around the taller woman's waist and then they were kissing.
"I want you."
Jane nodded. "Where?"
Maura looked around and then ground out, "Bedroom. Once is not going to be enough." As Jane carried her up the steps, they only stopped kissing long enough for Maura to tell her where the bedroom was. Once they made it there, very little was done delicately. Their coupling was fast, hard and for the first time, both women got to hear their name, actual name, fall from the others lips.
Naked, they collapsed in a sweaty heap, panting.
Jane was the first to speak. "I thought I'd never see you again." She turned on her side and touched Maura's face. "I love what you do to me, my body...my soul."
Maura turned on her side and mirrored Jane's movements. What she wanted to say was, "I love you," but didn't know if that was the right thing or not. She opted for kissing her lover and then smiling at her. After a few minutes, she did bring up that which she really wanted to know the answer to.
"Jane...what happens now? With us?"
Jane had been expecting this question, and had spent all day thinking about the answer. She opted to ask her own question. "What would you like to happen?" Jane wanted her to say that they could move-in together, get married, which had surprised her, and grow old together. She held her breath while she waited for Maura to answer her.
"If we were doing this in the traditional order, I would say date, then a relationship, then co-habitat and then...something very permanent." She glanced up at Jane, afraid she would see a woman trying to run out of the house. What she saw was a face filled with a smile and...love.
Before the moment could become too emotional or sappy, Jane took Maura's hand and kissed the knuckles. "Dr. Maura Isles, will you be my girlfriend?"
"Detective, are you asking me to go steady?"
Jane rolled the blonde under her and began kissing her. "Yes I am."
Maura answered, "Yes," as she slid her finger between Jane's lips, circling her clit.

When they finally got around to eating dinner, they chatted and learned about each. And they laughed at the idea you would have rampant sex, become relationship official and then learn details about each other.
Jane knew they needed to address how they were going to handle work.
"Maura, I need to keep us under wraps for a while, ok?"
Maura considered what Jane had just said and placed her fork on her plate. "Ok, but why? Your job?"
Jane pushed her plate away. "Yeah. I am starting with a new unit, cops are not known for being open minded, there is a stigma about female cops in general, and then my family. My mother."
Maura was a tad confused. "My mother knows about us. And my mother was surprised you were my first. All girls boarding school and all." Maura took a drink and continued, "In fact she told me she had experimented when she was in boarding school."
Jane nearly choked on her wine. "Do you discuss all of your lovers with your mother? Is that why you thought your mother had paid a call girl to sleep with you?!" Jane wondered just what kind of family Maura had.
"No! We...we don't have that kind of relationship. I mean, I was adopted and I am loved, but we aren't...close." She shrugged. "My mother had the odd maternal instinct this week and called to check on me. I burst into tears while on the phone with her, and it all came pouring out."
"You cried over...me?"
"I cried over the loss of you. Of the one thing that ever made me feel normal." She shrugged. "I told you I graduated from medical school before I could buy alcohol, and I was pretty awkward. This weekend with you was the first time I ever felt cared for, loved. Normal, I suppose. And I thought I would never see you again, never feel that way again."
Jane reached across the table and covered Maura's hand with her own. "I cried over you, too. In fact, I was crying so hard driving back, I had to pull over." She smiled at Maura. "Being with you was the first time I felt safe and free, sexually. I felt connected with you and feared I would never feel that way again."
Maura couldn't help but ask, "Because I am a woman?"
Jane didn't have to think at all before answering, "Yes and no. Yes, I wanted to try having sex with a woman, but not just any woman. I mean, I had gone to that same bar three other Friday nights and had some offers, but it just didn't feel right. And then I saw you and I felt something. Something I had never felt before."
"Ok. And your family has no idea you might be interested in women?"
Jane shook her head. "No. I mean, I've only ever dated men. My mother is a staunch Catholic." She shrugged. "I have no idea how she is going to react. She may be happy I have found somebody or she may be upset it's a woman. Either way, what she thinks isn't important, but we need to be on a strong foundation before we bring my crazy family into our relationship. I am not ashamed of you, of who you are or who I am. Whatever happens with my family is whatever happens." She leaned forward and kissed Maura. "And I just want to prove myself with the homicide squad before I start sharing personal details about my life."
"Could it be dangerous for you if they found out you are sleeping with a woman? Such as, not backing you up?"
Jane shook her head. "I...I...don't know. I don't really know that much about the squad. My partner is a guy named Korsak. Solid guy, animal lover, but I don't know." She chewed on her upper lip. "Can you live with that?"
Maura nodded. "I can." She stood up and cleared the table, handing the dishes to Jane with instructions on how she wanted them rinsed and placed in the dishwasher.
As they finished that task, Maura began to fidget and Jane noticed. She came over and wrapped the doctor in a hug from behind. "Maura, I want you to know that I will never let anyone hurt you if it is within my power. I promise."
Maura turned in Jane's arms, wrapping her arms around the taller woman's neck. "Will you stay with me tonight?"
Jane broke out in a radiant smile. "Let me go to my place and get what I need for work tomorrow." She kissed Maura again and said, "I'll be right back."

Jane had hurried through her apartment grabbing what she needed for work the next day, knowing it would be a calm day full of finalizing paperwork, etc. She was just about out the door when her phone rang. Flipping it out, she cursed when she saw it was her mother.
"Hi Ma."
"Janie! Are you coming for family dinner Sunday?"
Jane rolled her eyes. "Yeah, Ma."
"Frankie says there is a new medical person in the bottom of the station?"
That caused Jane to drop her pillow, which had her toothbrush, pants and shirt shoved down into the pillowcase. "What?"
"Frankie says a new medical coroner lady is taking over the crime lab. He says she is single and hot. You know anything about her?"
"Yeah, Ma, I met her today. I can't believe Frankie would objectify her that way. She is an accomplished doctor and the Chief Medical Examiner of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Not some bimbo."
"So invite her to dinner with us Sunday."
Before Jane could protest, her mother hung up. "Fuck."
A/N: This is Jane, pre-Hoyt. This story will conclude at Hoyt and then continue as a series in the Bar Fly universe I know how it ends, I know what questions I want answered.
