Chapter 8
Even though they knew what the creature was now, he still hadn't shown back up.
"He's waiting", Alex says, "that was a scouting trip".
"Waiting for what", Kara asks. It's been a week and everyone is on edge, not knowing when this creature is going to show back up. The DEO satellite has been sending out signal blasts for whenever he does come back but they haven't had any luck.
"I don't know", Alex says, "but he was checking something, response times, whether we would engage, something".
"Well as of right now it's technically not a threat", J'onn says, causing Alex to spin around.
"Not a threat", she exclaims, "it's a 100-foot alien that was able to just disappear. Who knows what it could do?".
"Yes but it hasn't actually done anything and it disappeared and hasn't come back. We can't waste resources standing around waiting for it to show up. Brainy, keep the alerts and the signal blast but move on. Danvers, go back to training recruits", J'onn orders.
"Yes sir", she says, heading back for the training rooms.
Kara sighs, wondering what this alien could want when her phone rings. "Hey, Nia. What's up?", she answers.
"Ms. Grant is looking for you and I told her you were dealing with something but she doesn't care", Nia says.
"No problem, I'll be there soon", Kara says and flies off the balcony.
"You were so excited about this project last week", Sam says, "Go down to the lab and work with them. Stop worrying about whatever it is that you're worrying about hard enough to make you chew on your pen".
Lena snaps up, pulling the pen away from her face, shocked that she didn't even realize it. "Ughh", she groans, "it's this stupid alien. Kara has taken it upon herself to do extra patrols, even though she hasn't been on a real patrol in months. She gets in late and leaves before I even get up".
"Ahhh", Sam smiles knowingly, "You're frustrated".
"Yes, I'm frustrated. This damn alien just disappeared", Lena snaps.
"Uh uh. Not that kind of frustrated", Sam teases, "You need to get laid".
"God Sam, really", Lena says.
"Yes really", Sam says, "Go home early. Order something nice and tell Kara you want to talk".
"Ugh maybe", Lena says, "We haven't had a date night in a while".
"Exactly", Sam says, "tell her to chill with the patrols and that you miss her and the puppy will be licking out of your hand… or you know somewhere else".
Lena laughs as Sam wiggles her eyebrows, "Don't let Alex hear you talk like that or her face will match her hair".
"Oh please she loves it when I talk like this", Sam smiles, thinking back to the other night when Ruby was at a sleepover, "she just doesn't like hearing about Kara's sex life".
"And vice versa", Lena laughs, "that night Kara called her away she was so confused why Alex would decline her call. I wouldn't want to answer the phone naked in bed with my girlfriend either".
Sam laughs and gets ready to say something back when Lena's phone rings. "I'll leave you to it then", she says, ducking out of Lena's office.
Lena groans accepting her fate and picks up the phone, "Ms. Luthor. There's an issue in the labs".
"Tell them I'll be right down, Jess", Lena says, grabbing her cell and heading out. "Guess I'm going to the labs anyway", she mutters to herself.
"It's your job to edit all of these", Cat rants, not even bothering to look up. "I understand you're out there saving the world and whatever", she waves her hand flippantly. "But with your gift", she smirks over the rim of her glasses, "It really shouldn't be an issue".
"Of course Ms. Grant", Kara says, holding the stack of articles ready for print that she has to read through, "I'll get them done today".
"Well…", Cat says, expectantly, "I don't care how fast you are, you can't get them done if you're still standing here and if they aren't done how am I supposed to drag my legacy out of the pit Andrea Rojas dug it into".
"Of course", Kara says, turning and leaving the glass cage.
She makes it back to her office and sinks down into the chair with a sigh.
"Oh hey Kara", Nia says, poking her head around the corner, "How's it going?".
"There's a Dheronian somewhere and we can't find it so Alex is freaking out. I've been patrolling all day and I haven't proofread any of these that need to be released tonight so Cat is freaking out. I've been patrolling all night too and I haven't slept in our bed for longer than an hour, so I'm tired", Kara lists off.
"So great", Nia says sarcastically, coming into the office and closing the door behind her. "You're even more stressed than Alex and I didn't think that was possible", Nia comments, pointing at the crinkle.
"Yeah well she's been going home to Sam", Kara says, raising her eyebrows.
"Ohhh, good for her", Nia says, leaning forward, not wanting to miss a single detail.
"That's another thing to add to the list", Kara laments, "I haven't even gotten to tease her about it".
"Well", Nia thinks for a moment, "Take the articles home or to Lena's office and just work from there. Grab some lunch and go be in the same room even if you're both just working".
Kara sighs, "True. Thanks Nia".
"You bet boss", Nia salutes and leaves.
"Working lunch with Lena", Kara muses aloud. It doesn't take her five seconds to make up her mind and pack up the files and her laptop.
Lena sighs as she sinks down into her desk chair. After getting the team in the labs back on the right track, Lena made her way back upstairs not wanting to get too drawn in that she takes over the project and knowing that she has a lot of paperwork to get through if she wants to relax tonight.
With a small smile on her face from her errant thoughts, she quickly sits up at the familiar sound of Kara landing on her balcony. Turning she takes in the lovely sight of her girlfriend, takeout bag in hand, laptop bag slung over her shoulder, and a big smile on her face.
Kara walks in, straight to Lena's chair, leaning down to give her a chaste kiss, "Hi".
"Hello darling", Lena greets, pulling Kara back down by the collar of her shirt.
"What was that for?", Kara asks, looking concerned.
"I love you", Lena says, and at Kara's looks, admits, "You always know when I'm having a bad day".
"Yes I do", Kara answers, leaning closer again, "because I love you". She kisses her again before holding out her free hand, "Couch?".
Lena takes her hand and rises, following her and the smell of food.
Kara quickly unpacks the food, lays it all out on the table, and starts to eat.
"So why'd you bring your bag?", Lena asks after a couple of bites.
"I've got a bunch of articles to proof", Kara answers, stopping to take a bite, "and Nia said I looked stressed so I should come work with you".
Lena smiles at the thought, "As long as you aren't distracting".
Kara gasps in mock indignation, "Me? Distracting?". She leans over to whisper in Lena's ear, "I think you have us confused, darling", she says, mimicking Lena's sultry tone.
Lena just bursts into laughter, "I do not sound like that".
"No you don't", Kara admits, "When you do it, it's sexier and way more distracting".
"Well, then", Lena says, raising her eyebrow at Kara before biting her lip and smirking, "it sounds like it works".
"Very well", Kara admits, starting in on her third sandwich. "It is ok that I work here right?", she asks. "I know I've been out patrolling a lot and I miss you so I figure, even if we're just working, it's still better".
Lena leans over to kiss her cheek, "Definitely better and I've missed you too". Kara smiles at this, as Lena continues, "But I was also hoping to run something past you?".
"Yeah shoot", Kara says.
"Since you've been gone so much, how about a date night tonight?", Lena says, "as long as you finish the articles".
"Yeah", Kara cheers, "That sounds great. It doesn't look like this alien is showing up anytime soon and I have to have these articles in by 4 anyway". Kara finishes the sandwich scooting closer to Lena and pulling her into her side, "What do you want to do?".
"I was hoping just dinner, relax, and watch a movie", Lena says, looking up at Kara hopefully, "Something simple".
Kara smiles at her, kissing her forehead, "That sounds perfect, Lee".
"Yeah?", Lena asks.
"As long as we can cuddle", Kara says, "absolutely".
Lena leans up and Kara meets her halfway in a sweet kiss, "Ok then I just need to finish up this paperwork before I head home". Lena pulls away and starts cleaning up the remnants of lunch. "You're welcome to stay here and work. You just may be motivation and not a distraction", she says, looking over her shoulder at Kara and winks.
Kara speeds the trash into the trash can and Lena into her chair before Lena can even blink. "Then you better hurry up and get that paperwork done", she teases from her place on the couch, laptop, papers, and pen ready.
Lena tries to give her a stern look but the corner of her mouth lifts at the eager, loving look from Kara, "You too, Supergirl".
AN: I know super short chapter but big things are coming up and I wanted to get this filler in to give myself time to work the next couple out.
As always, thanks for reading. I can't believe how far this little series has gotten. :)
