A few months later...
It was Christmas Eve and they were sitting on Eliza's roof, looking up at the stars. Kara had flown them up after everyone had gone to bed, wrapping a thick blanket around Lena to keep her warm.
"How early do you think Jamie will be up?" Lena asked.
"Extra early after we made him go to bed before the rest of us," Kara told her. "Don't worry, mom always gets up with him and he helps her make breakfast."
Lena rested her head on Kara's shoulder, "this is nice."
"Our first Christmas as a family."
Lena moved the blanket to share it with Kara, even though the alien didn't need it. Smiling as she looked up at her girlfriends face, Lena leaned close enough to kiss her. She couldn't believe how happy she had been these last few months, sure it had been a bit strange juggling work with living with Kara and Jamie again but her son was starting to open up to her as they spent more time together. When Kara had to leave on a Supergirl call, they'd wait on the sofa together and watch her on the news to make sure she was safe, then switch it off as soon as they knew she was coming home so that she wouldn't worry about them. It was their little secret.
"So what did you get for Alex?" Kara asked when they finally went back into her bedroom.
"You'll have to wait and see," Lena teased her.
"But it's practically Christmas," Kara let her shoulders drop and pouted.
"Then you won't have to wait long, will you?" Lena kissed her cheek and pulled back the covers on the bed.
Kara sighed, "it was so mean putting everyone's presents in that lead-lined box."
"If I hadn't caught you and Jamie snooping around for your presents I wouldn't need it. Anyway, it's just the surprise presents, you can still look at the regular ones."
"You don't need x-ray vision to know what's in those ones - Christmas sweaters, socks and boring stuff always have a distinctive shape."
"So you didn't want clothes for Christmas? I think it's too late to exchange..." Lena broke off laughing as Kara wrapped her arms around her and flew them onto the bed.
"Whatever you got me I'll love," Kara assured her, laying Lena down gently.
"If you don't, it's okay."
"Lena..."
"I'm not very good a picking out presents, that's why I used to get my assistants to buy everything. Lex and Lillian always looked so disapproving when they unwrapped gifts from me that it was easier if I'd asked someone else to buy them, but I wanted to choose things for your family myself."
She'd received a Christmas card and a gift from Lex which were delivered by his lawyer. Lena had taken them to the DEO to open, just in case they were dangerous. Brainy okayed them and she opened the present, pleased to find that Lex had remembered how much she treasured her mothers book of folklore and purchased her another volume of tales. It was probably the first present from him that he'd really thought about. She felt a little bad that she hadn't spent more time on his gift, just sending him a selection of books, unlike her gifts for the Danvers family, which she had spent hours agonising over. Lena didn't want to be responsible for ruining Christmas with unwanted gifts.
Kara had to bite her tongue to keep from saying something about the Luthors treatment of Lena, "I'll love whatever you got me because you love me and put that love into choosing the gift."
Lena brushed a strand of hair away from Kara's face, "I do love you."
"That is my favourite Christmas gift," Kara told her. "I love you too."
Kara kissed her until Lena reminded her that they needed to get some sleep, then they snuggled up under the blankets and closed their eyes.
The End.
AN: Okay so I'm ending it there. I was going to write about Kara wanting to go down and open their presents while everyone else was asleep, but I felt like this was a good place to finish. Another idea was for Kara's skin to suddenly glow green and have them getting upset that someone (maybe Lex, more likely Lillian as she didn't really appear in this story) had attacked at Christmas. If I had written that the story would have gone on longer, I would have written about how Lena offered Clark some of nanites, but that he refused, so Lena sent them to Lois who had to use them after this Christmas attack which affected them both.
