It's time for the epilogue. It's been a rough ride, I know. But I hope you enjoy this alternative perspective from Kyon's Point of View. I had this chapter written before I posted the last chapter, but I decided to expand on it, which is why it took me a little longer to post it.
If you're interested in my final thoughts, make sure to read what's under the line at the bottom. If not, I hope you enjoy the story nonetheless. Please don't forget to review, it really means a lot to me.
I hope you all enjoyed "The Amnesia of Haruhi Suzumiya."
Haruhi's eyes began to droop shut. I leaned back in my seat as I heard her mumble one last thing, "Thanks for always being here… Kyon…"
After that, she was out. I couldn't stop myself from smiling. I brushed her hair again for a moment before letting out a deep sigh.
She was awake for maybe 10 minutes at best and what happens? She gets her memory back, manages to recruit a new member for the SOS brigade and she finally tells me how she really feels about me. Never a moment's rest with this one, but I couldn't be happier to see it again.
Suddenly, there was a light knock on the door. "Might I come in, Kyon?" The all too familiar voice from behind the door asked.
I thought to myself for a moment. Did I really HAVE to let him in? Haruhi just went back to sleep. Whatever conversation we were about to have could wake her up again. Yeah, this wasn't a good time.
I say that, but another glance at Haruhi tells me that my half assed attempt at convincing myself was failing. She's sleeping so hard the girl is literally drooling.
Sighing, I was reluctant to answer, but I ultimately gave in. "Yeah, c'mon in."
The door opened and Itsuki Koizumi stepped in with his unchanging plastic smile. "Afternoon, Kyon." He lightly waved. "How is our charming and fearless leader holding up?"
I glanced at Haruhi again, still drooling. I wonder if Koizumi will notice. "She's doing a lot better. I think she's going to be fine after this."
I heard him deeply sigh, "I'm relieved to hear that." He took his coat off and put it up on a nearby hanger.
"So why else are you here?"
He looked surprised for a moment before settling back into his smile, "I shouldn't be surprised, but you're as sharp as usual." He looked at the sleeping Haruhi and then to me. "Truth be told, something rather… alarming has happened in the last several hours."
Weird, I don't feel like anything too crazy has happened. Honestly, considering how I rejected her while she had amnesia, I was afraid I was about to destroy the world.
He took a seat nearby, "Well for how 'alarming' it apparently is, you seem pretty calm to me." I shot him a look. "I mean you look like you're about to take a power nap."
Koizumi chuckled, "I assure you, despite my calm demeanor I'm actually at my wits end about how to go about this."
Groaning, I grabbed a chair and sat down next to him, "So do you want to stop beating around the bush and tell me what it is then? Maybe I can help?"
Koizumi adjusted himself in his chair and sighed, "Where to start… Some time starting last night, Ms. Suzumiya's emotional state had started going haywire. Because of this, a few closed spaces began popping up here and there and as you know, she still retained her abilities post amnesia. However, it was nothing we couldn't handle, but this continued all night long." He let out a yawn, "I'm actually quite exhausted right now, to be honest."
"No kidding, I don't think I've ever seen you yawn before."
He put his hand to his chin, "Odd, I didn't realize you were observing me so often."
I let out a groan, "okay, so what happened after all those closed spaces?"
Koizumi's eyes drifted to Haruhi, his plastic smile changed to a frown the longer he looked at her. "This morning between the hours of 5 am and 7 am, a peculiar closed space appeared that was centered around Ms. Suzumiya. This closed space was not unlike the one that you and Ms. Suzumiya were in when she was attempting to change the world into something new, back when this club had first formed."
I was honestly surprised at this, causing me to look back at Haruhi. "Around Haruhi?"
"Correct." He adjusted himself in his seat. "One that we espers were incapable of entering."
There was a pit in my stomach that was worse than anything I've ever experienced. Haruhi was about to change the world and none of us were in it? Not even me? "So… What happened?"
Koizumi leaned back in his seat and let out a sigh of relief, "Well, somehow the closed space resolved itself. None of us espers were able to punch into it to see what was happening on the inside, however."
"Does… that mean nothing changed then?"
"No, something was definitely different after it was resolved. Though thankfully, it seems the laws of physics themselves have been untouched." And the smile is back.
I'm really getting tired of this back and forth. 'Things are okay, but not actually okay, but maybe they are okay? Actually this is very serious.' Why is it so hard to get a straight answer from him?
"Okay, so what was different then?"
He had a hand on his chin as he contemplated. Is he trying to find the right words or…? He looked at his watch, "Truth be told, I was actually waiting for Ms. Nagato, I think she can explain this next part much better than I can." He smiled at me.
I let out an audible groan, he's having fun messing with me, isn't he?
Suddenly, there were three light knocks at the door. Just loud enough for me to hear them. I looked back and waited for someone to ask to come in, but heard nothing. Just as I was about to turn back to Koizumi, there were another 3 knocks.
I sighed and smiled, "Nagato, you can come in."
After a moment's pause, the door opened and Nagato stepped in. She looked around until she saw us, walking over and standing next to me afterwards. "Hello."
I waved, "Hey Nagato. Would you mind telling me what's going on? This guy's kind of useless."
He put a hand to his chest, "Kyon, that hurts. I just believe Ms. Nagato is the best person to explain this to you."
Nagato looked over to Haruhi, staring for a few moments before looking back at me. "Earlier this morning at precisely 5:17 am to 6:42 am, the data integration thought entity detected a large explosion of data centered around Haruhi Suzumiya."
"Yeah, Koizumi already said that."
She looked at Koizumi. "Oh. Good." She looked back at me. "After the initial data explosion, Haruhi Suzumiya began manipulating the data around her and…" She paused and I swear I could see the slightest hint of emotion on her face, as if she was struggling with what to say next. "The data integration thought entity believes she created something new."
Koizumi looked almost as surprised as I was. "Wait, Haruhi created something? What did she create?" I blurted out before Koizumi could say anything.
"I see… So she created something…" Koizumi put his hand to his chin, "Then I guess our suspicions were correct." He looked at me, "Kyon, who was it that brought Ms. Suzumiya to the hospital?"
I scratched the back of my head, "Some girl came by. She and I talked for a bit before Haruhi woke up, but she didn't have much to say. I think her name was Jiyuu something?"
"Jiyuu Haruka." Nagato quickly said.
"Kyon, we believe that girl was the one that Ms. Suzumiya created, though we have no idea WHY she was created."
"This is correct. The human known as Jiyuu Haruka has never existed before 6:42 this morning. There are no records of her existence prior to the last 24 hours."
I cut in for a moment, "And you have no idea why she was created?"
Nagato looked at the ground for a brief moment. "With the data I currently possess… There is evidence to suggest that this newly created human is an entity that was living within Haruhi Suzumiya. Monday, I detected an abnormality in Haruhi Suzumiya's brain waves. This abnormality was not the amnesia she was currently experiencing, but the possibility exists that it was related in some form."
"Interesting…" Koizumi tapped his chin. "So you're saying that Ms. Suzumiya and this entity were both inside her body? And this new girl is the result of them splitting?"
"Correct, however this is only a hypothesis. More data is required before reaching a satisfactory conclusion."
This is a lot to take in. The girl I just had a casual conversation with an hour ago didn't exist before today? She and Haruhi were sharing a BODY?! Does that mean she's the one I rejected…? There are so many questions that I really shouldn't be surprised by this point. I always forget that Haruhi's really got a lot of power behind her.
I looked at Nagato and Koizumi, "So what are we supposed to do?"
Koizumi looked at the table for a moment, "To be honest, I believe the best course of action is–
The door handle jiggled and there were some panic sounding knocks at the door "Kyooooonn…!" I heard a high pitched voice.
I laughed, it's so cute how easily she gets flustered. "Come on in, Ms. Asahina."
Ms. Asahina entered the hospital room, flowers in hand. "Thank goodness you're all here!" She looked around and grabbed an empty vase, placing the flowers inside and putting them next to Haruhi's bed. "Get well soon!" She whispered to the sleeping girl. She tiptoed away over to us and heavily sighed. "I'm so sorry I'm late…!" She took a deep breath.
"It's alright Ms. Asahina."
"No! Kyon, earlier this morning there were huge fluctuations in the– oh wait, that's classified… W-well, the temporal rifts caused by Ms. Suzumiya this morning are unlike anything we've ever seen!"
I couldn't help but chuckle, "Ms. Asahina, I'm already filled in. We were just about to start coming up with a plan of how to deal with this." As cute as it is watching Ms. Asahina panic, I'd really rather we figure out what to do about this. So, I looked back at Nagato and Koizumi after Ms. Asahina walked over to them.
The three of them shot one another a look. Almost as if they were communicating telepathically. As fun as that sounds, I can't do that. So can someone say something? "Well? I need some ideas here, guys."
Koizumi looked at me with his plastic smile. "Well Kyon, as I was saying before Ms. Asahina came in… I believe our best course of action is… uh, how do I put this… I think it's best we do–"
"Nothing." Nagato interjected.
Everyone looked at Nagato.
Excuse me? "You… Don't want to do anything about this?"
Koizumi cleared his throat, "I was going to say; Do our best to observe this new girl from a safe distance for the time being."
"Right! I think so too! We can see what effect she has on the time plane." Ms. Asahina excitedly pointed at Koizumi, she's oddly excitable today. She's usually a lot more timid, I guess she's taking things pretty seriously this time.
I scratched my cheek, "Well uh… That might be a bit of a challenge. To do it from a distance, I mean."
All three of them looked at me, "What do you mean, Kyon?" Koizumi's plastic smile seemed to be wavering, just a bit.
"Well, Haruhi just invited her to join the SOS Brigade." I leaned back in my chair.
Ms. Asahina put her hands to her mouth in shock, Koizumi's plastic smile was gone as surprise took its place. Nagato… well, her face didn't change, but if it could, I'm sure she'd have a funny look too.
"Is… That so?" Koizumi looked at the table. "Well, leave it to Ms. Suzumiya to take us all by surprise." He chuckled, "Honestly, I'm ashamed none of us saw this coming. We must not be very good brigade members."
"Speak for yourself." I muttered as I looked back at Haruhi, peacefully sleeping away in her hospital bed. The smile she had while she slept was probably one of the sweetest things I've seen all day.
About an hour or so had passed afterwards and Haruhi was still fast asleep. Nagato had sat down and began reading a book. Ms. Asahina had brought a miniature tea set in her bag and had brewed us all a small cup, even for Haruhi, for when she woke up. Koizumi had brought a small chess set, so he and I had been playing a bit back and forth.
"By the way, Kyon." He looked up from the game board, "I'd like to give you my congratulations."
My eyebrow rose out of curiosity, "What, throwing in the towel already? We've only played 2 games." I said, moving one of my game pieces.
"No, no. As you already know, part of my job in the organization is to monitor Ms. Suzumiya's mood, should they ever undergo massive shifts." He moved a pawn. "It really can be a pain sometimes, I won't lie."
I began squinting at him. What's he getting at? "Okay? So why congratulate me then?"
He smiled, an honest to god smile from Koizumi. "I believe Ms. Suzumiya was in a particularly happy mood earlier, before I came in. Happier than I've ever seen her."
My face began to heat up, "W-Well, that could be for a lot of reasons."
"That's true, but correct me if I'm wrong…" He leaned in close and glanced at Nagato and Ms. Asahina. "Did you both finally confess to one another?"
I grumbled, my face must be red as a tomato at this point. "She–! I uh… Yeah…" I groaned, finally admitting it. It's not that I'm embarrassed about our relationship, I just don't like admitting to Koizumi that he was right.
He smiled and leaned back, "Congratulations to you both, truly." He moved another piece on the board, this time within range of one of mine. "I can't wait to see what the two of you are capable of now that you're together."
I moved my piece, taking one of his with a sigh.
You and me both, Koizumi.
Some hours go by and Haruhi is still fast asleep, thankfully, she's not drooling anymore. It wasn't really an issue, but I'm sure she's going to want to kill me as I tease her about it when she wakes up. The thought alone makes me chuckle.
"Well, I'd say I've spent enough time here. I'm happy to see Ms. Suzumiya is doing well and has even regained her memories." Koizumi stretches, cracks his neck and gives me a pat on the back. "I'd say you and Ms. Suzumiya deserve a day off tomorrow, wouldn't you agree?"
A day off from school? To give up a day of wonderful academic education? He might be right, as much as it pains me to admit. I was so looking forward to it.
"If you'd rather go to school instead, then please forget I mentioned it–"
"No no! I mean, uh… shooo…!" I grabbed my shoulder and rotated it, "It's been a rough few days, you know?"
My horrible acting got a chuckle out of him, "I'll see to it that you have tomorrow off. This isn't usually something the organization would step in for, but I think this is a special case." He yawned himself, "I believe I'll be doing the same, now that things have finally settled down." Koizumi dug into his bag and pulled out a gold piece of cloth. "Could you hold on to this for me?"
Random…? "Uhh, yeah sure. What's it for?"
"I'm not sure, but I believe it's important for you to hold on to."
I really hate how cryptic he can be.
Koizumi picked up his things, stretched one last time and waved. "See you later, Kyon. Try not to say the wrong thing."
With that, he left. On such an odd note, too. Try not to say the wrong thing? To who?
Glancing at Haruhi, she was fast asleep. Nagato and Ms. Asahina both left earlier too. The girl Haruhi created, she's not here either… So who was he–
I heard two loud knocks, but the voice that followed these knocks didn't seem to match up. "Haruhi, sweety? Are you awake?" A woman's voice, kind of familiar too. Is that… Haruhi's mother?
"Excuse me, is this Mrs. Suzumiya?"
"Oh, Kyon? What are you doing–"
Just then, the door knob jiggled and the door slid open. Suddenly, I realized who actually knocked at the door.
The imposing figure stood much taller than me. "Kyon." He said in a deep, stern voice. I'm pretty sure that was supposed to be him greeting me. They both stepped inside, setting their coats on a rack nearby.
Haruhi's Father, Takaski Suzumiya.
Haruhi's Mother, Asami Suzumiya.
I reflexively stood up, not because I was intimidated by her father or anything. Nooooo. It was definitely out of respect. "Good evening, Mr. Suzumiya." I squeaked out.
Takaski scanned the room a little. Before locking on to his sleeping daughter and immediately brushing past me.
Did I say brushing? I meant to say shoving. He shoved me. Thankfully, Asami caught me.
Takaski stood next to Haruhi's bed, slightly readjusting her pillow and blanket to make her a little more comfortable. I'm surprised he didn't grab me by the throat when he saw me, but I guess he wants to make sure his daughter is okay. What a doting father.
"I'm sorry about him, I really am." Haruhi's mother whispered into my ear.
"It's…" Okay? Should I really say that? Honestly, I can't even bring myself to lie about it. "I guess I'm used to the rough treatment." I say instead. "I've dealt with Haruhi enough to know what to expect."
Her mother chuckled, I'm glad she's got a sense of humor at least.
"Kyon." He said my name again, "How has she been?" He turns his head slightly, I can't see his eyes, but I think he's listening.
I almost don't want to answer him. There's a part of me that could say, 'now I see where Haruhi gets her manners from.' But honestly? Haruhi might as well be a nun when compared to her father. As reluctant as I am to answer him, I don't want my face caved in by his massive fists. "She's doing alright. She woke up a few hours ago, we talked a little and then she went back to sleep."
"...Hmm." He looked back to her, "Does she still not remember anything?"
Suddenly, there was this mischievous feeling welling up inside me. Neither of her parents know she's gotten her memory back. With how much this guy's put me through the ringer, maybe a harmless prank might be in order…? Do I really want to risk that? I did just say I didn't want my face caved in, but when am I going to get this chance again? What would Haruhi do?
Oh god, am I really asking myself that?
Throwing caution to the wind, I sigh.
"Well…" I look away from him. "To be honest, I think she's regressed to where she started."
"Excuse me?" Her father stood up and turned around, clearly agitated. Thinking about it again, not really sure what my plan was. "Are you telling me my little girl has amnesia again?!" He stepped closer to me, getting very close.
"Takaski! Would you settle down!" She slapped her husband on the arm, "Kyon, can you please explain?"
Haruhi's mother was a ray of sunshine piercing through that raging thunderstorm that is her husband.
I hate to have her defend me when I'm just trying to have some fun, so I think I'd best kill the joke here. "Alright, the truth is, Haruhi's gotten her memory back. For real." I smile, awkwardly.
Asami's sweet smile turns into a frown, "That was a lousy trick, Kyon."
I'm so sorry, Asami. I promise, I'll never trick you again.
I expected Haruhi's father to be livid, but he actually gave out a sigh of relief. In fact, I even heard him chuckle, "You little snot." He continued chuckling to himself, "You got me good with that." His chuckling got a little bit harder before he settled down. He grabbed a chair and sat in it, suddenly letting himself get loose and sink into it.
I'm very surprised my prank didn't get me killed, but I'm not about to question it, so I laughed along with him. "She was just as lively as you remember too, I think after some more rest, she'll be back to hunting for the supernatural again before you know it." Much to my dismay, because that means I'm going to have to go with her.
"So." Haruhi's father began, "How did this happen?" He leaned in, "I let her leave the house to go find you and suddenly she's in the hospital? Not to mention the fact that she's also got her memory back." Takaski narrowed his gaze at me, glaring daggers. "You didn't do anything to her, did you?" He finished, raising his left brow.
Honesty is the best policy, but I'm not really sure what to say here.
"I uh…" I nervously scratched my cheek, looking around the room to find an answer that I know isn't going to be there. "I'm not really sure what happened." Please don't kill me.
"You don't know?" Asami had her left hand resting on Takaski's shoulder, "You two did find each other, right?"
Another nervous scratch, "Yeah we did but…" Do I really need to go into detail with this? "We met up after she left the house and we talked a bit about… stuff…"
"What stuff?" She innocently asked, "Did you get into a fight?"
"No, no. We didn't fight, but she…" Please, don't make me say it. I know I'm not exactly leaving a lot of hints about what we said, but please figure it out.
Takaski lightly pounded the table, "Would you spit it out already?"
For goodness' sake, "She confessed to me, alright?" I turned away, shyly. I also didn't want to see their faces after just saying that.
After a second or two later I just hear "And?" From Haruhi's father.
"Well, I kind of… rejected her?" I swallowed and felt a pit in my stomach.
Surprisingly, Haruhi's father looked mildly disappointed, "What, is my daughter not good enough for you, Kyon?"
You've got to be kidding me. First he tells me to stay away from her, now he's telling me that I should have said yes? Honestly, I can definitely see the family relation here. I just wish I could understand it. "No, that's– This was before she got her memory back! I just… I dunno. I do care for Haruhi, but getting into a relationship with her while she had amnesia just didn't feel right. She still looked like Haruhi, but… She wasn't the Haruhi that I–" I suddenly realized that I was babbling.
Takaski let out a groan, sinking into his chair again. "Alright, I get it. Just shut up already." He covered his eyes with one of his hands and leaned back into his chair.
"Are you okay, sweety?" His wife grabbed a chair and sat next to him.
"I'm fine. Just wasn't expecting him to go into detail like that." Asami giggled, her face a little red.
I nervously chuckled. When things got quiet again, I sensed that they'd want some alone time. So I quietly began packing up my things to get ready to go.
"Kyon." Takaski calls me. "Come here for a bit." He lightly kicks out a chair, implying I sit my ass down.
I sigh inwardly and walk over to the chair, sitting down across from Takaski.
"I want to chat, me and you, along with my wife." He sat up and leaned forward, keeping his eyes on me.
Swallowing, I nodded. "Well, I'm all ears, I guess."
A short silence followed my question. Takaski glanced at Haruhi, back to me and then looked down at the table. "About the 'deal' we discussed a few days ago. The one about you not seeing my daughter anymore?"
Here it comes. I can hear it now, 'Kyon, I still don't want you seeing my daughter. I'm happy she has her memory back, but as of today, stop seeing her outside of class.' Everyone here knows what you're gonna say, so just get on with it.
"Kyon… I…" He paused, seemingly struggling to find the words. "I'm sorry."
I actually leaned back a bit in surprise, hearing Haruhi apologize is one thing, but her father? "You're… Sorry?"
"Yeah."
Asami leaned in slightly, "Kyon, after you met our daughter, she really changed. Yes, she did get into more trouble here and there but…" She looked to the floor.
"But she was having fun again, with everything." Takaski jumped in. "You lit some sort of spark inside her. I don't know what you did, but I can't deny that it's had a positive effect on her." He sighed again, almost as if he had just finished a short distance run. Is admitting you were wrong really that hard for this guy to do?
"I also want to apologize for taking advantage of you and your family." He dug into his pocket and pulled out some money out of his wallet. A lot of money. Takaski placed the wad of Yen on the table and slid it over to me, "After the accident, I took advantage of your guilt to try and keep you away from my daughter. Then, I asked you to take her in for a week before we got back." He took his hand off the wad and bowed, as did Asami.
"Thank you for taking care of our daughter." Asami said.
"This should cover anything else you had to deal with after we stopped sending you money. Please, give your parents our thanks." Afterwards, they both sat up.
I looked down at the stack of money and back to them, "I…" What should I do? Do I just grab it? I know he said it was for us to have but…
"Just take it already, will you?" Takaski demanded.
Reaching out, I hesitantly take the money and hold it in my hands. I don't think I've ever held this much cash in my entire life. I'm afraid to put it away, but I don't want to walk around holding this in broad daylight. I carefully slip the money into my backpack and sigh, "I'll let my parents know. Thank you both, so much." I have no idea how to properly give thanks for this amount of money, so hopefully that was good enough.
"As for the deal?" Takaski started again, "Hmm…" He looked to his wife, who smiled back at him.
"Kyon, I'm sorry if this is rude but… What does our daughter mean to you?"
I gulped again and could feel the fight or flight instincts kicking in. I breathed in and out slowly, giving myself a moment. "I love her. Truly." I'm really glad she's not awake. Or at least I hope she isn't, I haven't looked back at her for a bit.
Takaski frowned, "Is that so…?" He stood up from his chair rather quickly, surprising Asami even.
"Takaski?" She stood up behind him, obviously worried about his sudden rise.
"You love her, do you?"
Despite the fact that I'm positive this man could knock me out in one or two punches, I stood up. "Y-Yes sir, I do." Dammit, I stuttered. I put on my best stern face. I'm intimidated, yeah, but I'm not about to back down. It's a matter of principle, you know?
We stared each other down for a minute or two. Suddenly, his hand whips out. Not to hit me, but to shake hands. I looked down at it and then back to him. I hesitated for a moment, but firmly grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
"Consider the deal null and void." He smiled.
I felt a weird warm sensation wash over me and couldn't stop myself from smiling, this was weird. I don't think I've felt this before. Is this what it's like to really earn someone's respect?
"However." He pulls me in close, "If you hurt my daughter. I'm coming for you." He gave an almost devilish smile and let go.
Just like that, the warm sensation I had felt was quickly replaced with fear.
There was knocking at the door again. Damn, Haruhi is really popular today, isn't she?
The door opened and there once again, was Jiyuu. "I'm sorry to bother you, but I think I left something here earlier." She nervously smiled and then stopped. "uh… I'm not interrupting something, am I?" She stepped inside and closed the door behind her.
"No, nothing at all." Takaski looked at me, I guess because he doesn't know who this girl is.
Jiyuu began looking at the floor, for whatever it was she left. "I think it slipped off as I was leaving…" She muttered to herself. I noticed she didn't have that golden armband that she had when she came back the first time.
"Who is this, Kyon? She doesn't look like any of my daughter's other friends." Asami whispered.
"Oh, right. This is the girl who found Haruhi while she was passed out on the street."
Takaski looked at me, then back to Jiyuu. If what Koizumi said earlier was right, this is the same person that was inside Haruhi for the last week and a half. Takaski walked up to her, "Excuse me, miss?"
Jiyuu turned around and spasmed upon seeing the large figure standing behind her, "O-oh, sorry! Did you need to leave?"
He chuckled, "No, no. I just wanted to thank you for saving my daughter." He leaned down.
"Wait, you're– I'm so sorry!" She stood up and bowed, knocking into Takaski as she bent herself forward. "I had no idea you two were her parents!"
Asami started laughing, "Don't worry about it! Really, we can't thank you enough."
Jiyuu sighed and stood back up, "I just did what I thought anyone would do." She looked back and forth between the two for a while. "I uh…" She stared at them now, "Sorry, it's just… you both seem kind of familiar…"
I was wondering if she had any memory of her time inside Haruhi, but I guess it's nothing more than some Deja Vu.
"Funny, I was kind of thinking the same thing." Takaski had been moving some things around, still looking for her Armband, although I don't think he knows that's what he's looking for.
"Oh no, please, you don't need to help me look!" Jiyuu bent down herself, almost as if she were trying to stop Takaski from looking for her armband.
Wait… Gold armb– I dug into my bag and pulled out the cloth that Koizumi had given me.
That son of a… I sighed, "Is this what you're looking for?" I held up. "A friend of mine found it after you had visited."
She suddenly had a wide smile, "That's it!" She rushed over and snatched it from my hands, "Thank you so much! I'd be heartbroken if I lost it." She sighed, quickly tying it back onto her arm.
Then, she and I locked eyes.
She stopped and stared at me, just as she did with Haruhi's parents. It was really awkward, but I'm just gonna let her go through whatever motion she's going through.
Jiyuu blinked and shook her head, snapping out of whatever trance she was in. "I'm sorry… You said your name was… Kyon?"
"No, that's a nickname, but you can call me that if you'd like." I smiled.
She sighed, "Thank you for finding my armband for me, Kyon." She turned, bowed to Haruhi's parents. She pulled out a piece of paper and scribbled some numbers down. Then, she walked over to the small table next to Haruhi and placed it there. Finally, she turned to me, "That's my number. Make sure she saves it! I meant to give it to you before I left, but I figured you guys were having a moment." She laughed and opened the door to leave. Before she left she turned to me, "You know, I'm actually really excited to check out your guys' club!" She smiled.
She closed the door behind her, leaving again.
I got a couple odd looks from Asami and Takaski, but I don't think they're suspecting me of anything. Not after everything we just went through.
Suddenly, Asami yawned and stretched, "Forgive me Kyon, we've been worried sick over Haruhi that neither of us has had any proper sleep." Asami walked over to the small lounge in the room and lied down. "If you don't mind, I'm going to get a little sleep now." She yawned again. Moments later, she was out.
"She's a quick sleeper." I joked.
Takaski laughed, "Yeah, she can sleep just about anywhere." He looked back at me. "Thank you again, Kyon."
His sudden thanks was a little out of the blue, but I smiled regardless. "I don't mind."
Takaski yawned and walked over to the lounge Asami was sleeping on, sitting down next to her. Soon after, he was out too. They really must have been tired, although I can't blame them.
I looked back at Haruhi and smiled. I walked over with a chair and sat next to her, brushing my hand through her bangs, just glad to see her sleeping peacefully again. Finally alone with my thoughts, my mind started to wander a bit. I started thinking about everything that had happened.
It's hard to believe how different things are going to be after this. We've got a new member, a new relationship, I've got Haruhi's parents' permission and plenty of other things I'm sure I'll experience down the line. I can't say I'm looking forward to EVERYTHING, but I'm glad I'll be tackling it with Haruhi by my side. I'm happy she's back to normal, I was really worried I'd never see her again.
I'm not sure what kind of things she endured throughout this whole ordeal. Almost getting hit by the truck alone would make a person want to throw in the towel. Not only that, but if Jiyuu was really the one that we've been talking to for the past 2 weeks, I can only imagine what they must have gone through to kick Haruhi's powers into overdrive.
Regardless, I'm feeling optimistic about whatever happens next. I'm sure I'll be run ragged by this crazy girl, but I knew what I signed up for when I finally realized how I felt. I'll probably grumble and groan, sigh a little here and there while she drags me around too. As long as we can squeeze in a few dates once in a while, I think I can put up with it.
All I can say now is…
Rest easy, Haruhi Suzumiya.
With that, The Amnesia of Haruhi Suzumiya is officially finished.
Seeing things from Kyon's perspective was a nice change of pace. I kind of missed writing for the rest of the SOS Brigade, so this was a ton of fun to write. I'm also glad I got Jiyuu to meet Haruhi's parents one last time. It shouldn't have taken me 8 years, but unfortunately that's what ended up happening. There's a part of me that didn't think I'd finish it. I generally don't like leaving things unfinished but when I hit the roadblock at chapter 5, I don't know what it was but I just couldn't get myself to write.
What kicked me back into gear was me going back one day and looking at some of the reviews people had left me, as well as a couple newer ones. It reignited that spark and helped me push forward.
I'm sorry it took so long. I can't say that enough. Thank you guys for reading.
While this will most likely be my last fanfic, I can say for sure it's not going to be my last brush at creating stories. I've still got tons of stories to tell, but those will probably be more visually told instead of through text. Once again, a big thanks to: Martin III, SomeOldBloke, fencer29, Cornelius McMuffin and The Pairing Guy. To anyone new who leaves a review, thank you.
I can't express just how much it meant to see you guys sticking around for my story. Writing these stories has helped me a lot in my life and having someone around to read it made it all the better.
Thank you all again, never stop believing in your dreams and continue to push forward. If you've any final thoughts for me, good or bad, please let me know in the review, or shoot me a DM.
