There was a certain irony in the fact that Near's only shelter from a lonely reality was the very boy who condemned him to it in the first place. But there was something so comforting about the familiarity of their odd dynamic. Near figured that's what kept them both coming back, long after they were divided by their mentor's tragic fate.
