Kara hates grocery shopping…well actually she loves it.
Kara has a complicated relationship with grocery shopping.
She loves the aftermath of grocery shopping, having her cupboards full of her favourite foods and lots of ingredients to try new recipes that she will undoubtedly mess up. She hates the process of actually shopping for groceries though.
She hates being surrounded with people rushing her from all sides when she just wants to take a minute to find the things on her list and try to keep it all in her budget. She can only go either after work or on a weekend, right when the store is the busiest so that doesn't help.
There is just way too much noise and too much bustling for her liking. For quite a while she's been promising herself that one day she is going to get up early before work and get it done then in hope that it will be much less crowded, and she can actually shop in peace without being on the verge of an anxiety attack.
Since Kara fell asleep on the couch early last night, she woke up bright and early so she decided that today's the day to try it out and see if there is any difference, she may even be able to confidently say that she doesn't mind grocery shopping by the end of this experience if all goes well.
Still rubbing sleep from her eyes, she strolls into the store. She knows straight away that today is going to be a good day. First off, she got a cart without a botched wheel, a miracle in itself, and second, the place is practically empty. There's no bustling people or shoving or stress.
The only people in here are the staff, the early birds and the people who have come off night shifts.
With the store being so empty Kara can let herself relax and make her way up and down the aisles at her own pace, checking the nutrition and price of products as she goes without being rushed.
She honestly had no idea that shopping could be so fun and stress free, she has definitely found her new shopping routine.
Her cart gets stacked with all the things she wants, mostly snacks but who cares, and just as she heads down to the produce section to grab some tomatoes for a recipe she sees something that makes her pause.
Kara was just in the middle of dodging around the fruit stands, not interested in purchasing any of them and now her feet don't seem to want to move, her eyes fixated on the most beautiful woman she's even seen.
The woman is oblivious to her mental breakdown, too busy picking out Kale. Kara is pretty sure that's the only turn off about the woman because she is stunning in every way, from her sharp jawline to her silky black hair to her flashy business suit that fits her just right. Kara is speechless.
Unfortunately for Kara, she's still stood there mouth agape when the woman finishes picking her kale and looks up, finding her staring at her with a shellshocked expression.
With an uncertain look on her face, the woman raises a hand in an awkward wave, one that thankfully, Kara manages to return, and she finally snaps her jaw shut. "Uh, can I help you with something?"
Panic fills Kara's eyes, she has no idea how to talk herself out of trouble for staring at a stranger that she is attracted to. "Um – I – no, no. I was just…waiting to get some Kale."
It's not very convincing but the woman takes it at face value, smiling at her kindly and shifting over to make space next to her for Kara to grab some Kale for herself.
"Thanks." Kara mumbles, embarrassed as she reaches for a bunch of kale. She has no idea what she'll do with it when she gets home but she has no choice to get it now, disgusted that such an evil thing is going into her cart with her snacks.
Just as she is about to drop it on top of her other stuff the woman reaches out a hand to her wrist to stop her. "Wait, there's a much nicer bunch over here, let me grab it for you instead."
Kara's brain stops working again, her eyes fixated on the fingers wrapped around her wrist, her skin tingling where the woman's own skin touches her.
The woman grabs a different bunch of kale and promptly drops her hand from Kara's wrist when she notices how Kara is staring at it, amused when Kara's arm moves with her as she tries to pull her hand away.
"Here, this one is much better." She plucks the old bunch of kale from her hand and replaces it with the new one. "This goes great in a soup with carrot."
"Carrot?" Kara's eyebrows scrunch when she tries to stop the disgusted look from covering her face.
She is shocked back into reality when the raven haired woman chuckles at her. "Yes, carrot. The long orange pointy things."
Kara forces a smile on her face. "Right, yes, carrots. Love them. I should try that."
"You're cute." The woman looks shocked that the words have fallen out of her mouth and instantly apologises "I'm sorry, that wasn't appropriate."
Kara instantly jumps in, not wanting the woman to feel guilty. "No, it's alright. My brain has been struggling since I saw you to be honest, you're really pretty."
They have matching pink cheeks and bashful expressions as Kara giggles a little.
A hand is held out to Kara. "I'm Lena by the way."
"Kara. Lovely to meet you." Kara takes the offered hand with a grin, one that is swiftly returned.
"Well, Kara. How about you put the kale back and I make you that soup sometime? Maybe we could watch a movie after?"
Kara is trapped, she so badly wants to go on a date with this woman but if she agrees she will have to eat kale and carrot soup…worth it. "We'll have to head over there to get some long orange pointy things then." Kara points over Lena's shoulder.
Lena smiles at her, relieved and overjoyed. "Are you free tonight?"
"I get off work at 5."
"How about you come by at about 7? Text me and I'll you the address." Lena pulls out a business card and hands it over. "My personal number is on the back."
"That sounds amazing, I'll bring dessert."
Lena raises an eyebrow at her sexily and drops her voice until she is talking in a sultry tone. "What makes you think there won't be dessert anyway?"
