Chapter 21: A Phenex, Fox, and Cat
"I have to ask." Orochimaru said as he put his empty wine glass on a tray from a waiter who was carrying a tray of empty cups. "How did Jiraiya pass?"
Naruto felt a lump in his throat.
His guard up, Naruto stood straight.
"He died… protecting me." Naruto replied sadly, Orochimaru leaning in to hear his more mumbled words.
"May I ask who he was protecting you from?" Orochimaru asked as he looked at Naruto.
"I… I don't think I got his name." Naruto answered as he slumped. "All I remember is from a quick glance after he got me…"
Naruto's left shoulder ached at the mention of the attacker. Pulsation after remembering the bastard who took Jiraiya's life.
"He had blue skin and a massive sword wrapped up in bandages…" Naruto said as that was all he could remember.
'Kisame Hoshigaki.' Orochimaru thought from the simple description Naruto gave him. 'He is a Warlord, but also a hired killer, so it makes sense to how the old toad croaked…'
Before Orochimaru could ask another question, he was interrupted.
"Naruto, come on, we are going to do a photo!" Regulus shouted, getting Naruto's attention.
"Okay!" Naruto replied, turning to Orochimaru and bowing. "Excuse me."
Naruto ran to Regulus, Orochimaru's analytical eye never leaving the kitsune.
Grabbing another drink… or three, Orochimaru walked out on an empty balcony, putting two of the drinks on the thick marble guard rail.
"Tsunade… Jiraiya…" Orochimaru whispered before he drank the entire wine glass in a second, putting the empty glass down before picking up the fill glasses. "I am the only one who survived… huh…" His eyes got teary at the thought of his deceased teammates. "I guess I won our bet. Sad that I can't be with you two."
He poured the wine from the cups.
His way of honoring his friends as the Festival of the End continued, all who partied parting a stray thought to the heroes (Devil, human, Yokai alike, Dead or Alive) and thank them for bringing the future peace.
Next Morning, Phenex Mansion…
"FUCKING DUMBASS!" was heard through out the shaking mansion, shouted by Layla.
Riser sat on his knees, massive enflamed welts on his head with his peerage nearby.
Layla held a scowl on her face as she glared at her third son.
She gripped her hands, which burst into flames.
"You caused a big problem over your sister trying to make friends!" Layla asked to make sure she wasn't going crazy.
"Of course, Riser did it to keep…"
Riser had his face removed, Texas Chainsaw style, from a backhanded slap from his mother, muscle being torn and skull exposed before it started to heal with fire.
"Shut. Up." She stated coldly, her son's mouth closing while her gaze turned to his peerage, who stood straight and nervous. "Yubelluna."
"Yes, Ma'am?"
"Where were you when Riser was looking for Ravel?"
"I was… talking to a friend from another peerage." Yubelluna answered honestly, knowing it would be worse to lie to Layla.
"So, you were disregarding your duty to keep your King under control?"
Yubelluna instantly sat on her knees, expecting punishment.
Which she got.
"No…" She whimpered as a bowl of sour pickled plums appeared before her, her lips puckering at the sight of them.
Layla turned her attention to each member of Riser's peerage, punishing them accordingly.
"Now, for you, my son." Layla said as she turned, riser knowing his punishment was going to be worse. "Are you going to pull this kind of stunt again?"
"No… I promise mom…" Riser stated as he started to panic as a black flame appeared in Layla's hand.
"Well, you see…" Layla said as she grabbed Riser's jaw, forcing him to look her in the eye. "I don't feel like you are. So, Mommy is going to… Make sure you do."
Phenex Mansion, Garden…
Riser's screams of pain were heavily dampened and muffled by the sound sealing seals as Jonathan sat across from Ravel with Sabo before them at a gazebo table.
Beside Ravel's chair was Loona and Onimaru, resting next to her chair.
Around the table, Danjuro and Manami serving them Golden Tips Imperial, Danjuro's favorite tea, and tea cakes.
"Delicious." Ravel said as she snacked on a pastry, smiling brightly.
"Yes, it is, Ravel." Sabo said, shoving four of them into his mouth, nearly choking when Danjuro smacked him in the head.
"Where are your manners, Lord Sabo?" Danjuro asked, glaring at the Young Devil, who was now taking a slow, appreciative bite before sipping his tea, earning a nod of approval from Danjuro, who smiled.
"Ravel, you looking forward to this weekend?" Sabo asked casually, accepting another pastry from Manami, who smiled at him.
Ravel's cheeks turned pink as she avoided his gaze, causing Jonathan and Sabo to lean forward, smirks on their faces.
"Yes… I am." Ravel said timidly, her pink cheeks becoming red.
"So, you happy you made a friend?" Jonathan asked, Sabo having informed him and Layla on how Naruto and Ravel were interacting.
They appreciated their second son looking out for his baby sister.
"Yes, Naruto is a good friend."
"And he is cute." Jonathan added.
"Yeah, he is cu…" Ravel had steam puffing from her ears as her face was red as a beet, Sabo and Jonathan howling with laughter, Danjuro chuckling behind his hand as Manami poured Ravel more tea.
"Not funny." Ravel mumbled with a frown.
Meanwhile, Bael Peerage…
After a rushed breakfast and removing his bandages, Naruto stood in a clearing with one of his spare Shirasaya katana's instead of Shigure and Yubashiri.
He stood still in concentration.
Naruto's eyes opened, swinging his sword down.
The rock was cut cleanly in two.
'Okay, so stone is off my list.' Naruto thought as he wiped his head.
Using what he knew about cutting fire, feeling out the rhythm of the stone, Naruto cut it.
'Now to move on to steel.' Naruto thought as he turned to a slab of steel he had gotten from Rob, who was doing some maintenance work and was going to toss it, but after hearing Naruto's reason why he needed the steel, he gave it to the kitsune.
Naruto closed his eyes.
'Feel the rhythm of the steel.' Naruto thought, focusing as the world enveloped him.
The sounds of the trees.
The flutter of the blades of grass.
Naruto's eyes opened and he swung.
"NARUTO!"
Naruto flinched, his shirayasa blade hitting the steel.
"FUCK!" Naruto exclaimed, looking at his now damaged blade. 'The edge is completely blunted in that spot!'
He sighed in relief before Koneko tackled him.
'At least I didn't do this to Shigure or Yubashiri.' He thought in relief as he scowled, turning to Koneko. "Why did you distract me? My blade is damaged!"
Koneko rolled her eyes with a shrug.
"It's just a piece of metal. You can get it replaced." Koneko said nonchalantly, as if she hadn't cost Naruto a lot of money.
"That isn't the point, Koneko." Naruto argued, stomping on the ground with his cheeks puffed out. "Anyway, why are you here?"
"I wanted to hang out, why? You don't want me around?" Koneko asked as she threw on her best 'hurt' tone, her eyes becoming big and watery. "Oh… oh I see… fine. I guess I'll…"
"No, you don't have to leave!" Naruto stated as he put his hand on her shoulder in a panic, falling for Koneko's trick. "I want to spend time with you! I was in the wrong…"
'Got him.' Koneko thought as she 'shuddered' while taking a deep breath. "r-Really? I can stay?"
"Yes, now stop crying." Naruto whimpered as he pulled out a handkerchief and dabbed Koneko's eyes carefully.
"I will… if you teach me how to use that cutting fire jutsu…" Koneko whimpered.
"Sure, I'll teach you…"
"And Shadow clones…"
"Oh, sure I can…"
"And Rokushiki…"
Naruto stopped, looking Koneko in the eye with an 'Are you done' questioning look.
"Yeah, I'm done, but I am serious." Koneko said as she took the handkerchief and finished drying her eyes.
"Ugh…" Naruto said as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "Fine, I can teach you that stuff… but if you want to use Homura Saki, you are going to need a blade."
Twenty Minutes Later, Asmoda…
Naruto's eye twitched as he, Koneko, and Liban entered Vulcan's shop.
"Hello, welcome to… Hey, Naruto, you are a little early for sword maintenance, aren't you." Vulcan said as she put away the metal she was carrying, wiping her hands off before approaching the trio. "Oh, hello…"
"Vulcan, this is Koneko." Naruto introduced his blacksmith to his friend, who was looking over some of the items on sale. "Koneko, this is Vulcan."
"Nice to meet you." Koneko said with a polite bow.
Liban snickered.
"You two look like sisters." Liban pointed out as he looked at Vulcan and Koneko.
"We do not!" Koneko and Vulcan said in unison, looking at each other in confusion.
"Anyway, I do need a small amount of work done…" Naruto said nervously as he pulled out the damaged shirayasa blade.
"What happened!" Vulcan shouted as she took the sword from Naruto's hand.
"I was practicing to cut steel… but someone," Naruto glanced at Koneko, causing her to shudder. "Distracted me and I ended up just hitting steel and dulling the blade."
Vulcan face palmed but pulled her hand back with a smile.
"Well, it is not as bad as it could have been." She said as she put the sword on a shelf, putting a tag on it with information and a number. "It will probably be a week or so before I get to working on it, Naruto. Is that okay?"
"Yeah, that's fine." Naruto said as Vulcan got behind the register, he himself pulling out his wallet. "I have the second shirayasa to use for training."
Vulcan nodded as she rang him up, Naruto's face dropping as he saw the price.
"No issue if I get a discount, right?" He asked jokingly.
"Nope." Vulcan replied with a big grin.
Liban stood with Koneko, helping her as she looked over the blades she could get as Naruto's earnings dropped significantly.
"So, what kind of weapon or armor piece are you looking for?" Vulcan asked Koneko with a lot of sunshine behind her as Naruto looked at his empty frog wallet, crying.
"Naruto is going to teach me how to use Kitsunebi-ryu, so I need a sword." Koneko explained to Vulcan. "However, I am a boxer type fighter, so maybe a small sword would be better."
"Uha, I see." Vulcan said as she crossed her arms, one hand scratching the base of her ear slowly in thought. "Oh, I know."
Vulcan walked over to her show case, kneeling down to open the case and reached in, grabbing what she wanted.
"Here." Vulcan said as she held out the weapon, locking the case with one hand. "Try this out."
Koneko took the blade and unsheathed it.
It was a Japanese tanto, being eleven inches in length from handle to blade tip.
The sheath was a dark brown stained sheath, with the Sageo wrap being a deep royal purple.
The fuchi, kashira, and tsuba were blackened copper in color, the tsuba itself being circular with a lotus motif engraved in it.
The Habaki was copper, but had a smooth and polished look to it.
White Sting Ray skin had been used for the Samegawa as the menuki were dragons reaching outward.
The Ito Wrap was black.
The blade itself has a normal hamon pattern.
"How does it feel?" Liban asked Koneko, kneeling to see her eye to eye as Koneko swung it a few times.
"I like it. Feels right." Koneko said with a smile. 'Now if I can learn how to cut fire, then if Rias has to fight the Phenex asshole, we have an ace up our sleeve.'
Koneko sheathed it, and was eventually crying as well after paying for it.
Elsewhere…
Lucci looked at his phone with Hattori.
A smirk was on the leopard's face as he watched his student outright humiliate his opponent.
'You still have a long way to go, kid.' Lucci thought as he put his phone away, getting ready for his job with his comrades. 'But I'll be back to test you again, so continue to get stronger and impress me again.'
Evening…
"You are doing what tomorrow?" Koneko asked as she ate dinner with Naruto and the rest of the peerage, Sairaorg and Kuisha gone for business this night.
"I am going to the Phenex Mansion tomorrow for a sleep over with Ravel." Naruto repeated as he ate his meal.
Koneko was livid.
'NO fucking WAY am I going to LET that girl steal him from me!' Koneko thought, making a plan.
Skip, Afternoon…
"There, that should do it." Ravel said as she finished checking her room… again… for the seventh time.
She had wanted everything to be perfect for her first friend and especially her first sleep over.
A knock from the door pulled Ravel's attention.
"Come in."
"Lady Ravel," Danjuro said as he entered Ravel's room. "Our guest has…" Danjuro felt something rush past him. "Arrived."
Ravel barreled to the front door in glee, a bright smile on her face as she skipped down the stairs.
Before she reached the foyer, Ravel slowed her roll and made sure she looked good before walking out.
"Oh, hey Ravel." Naruto greeted with an arm wave.
"Welcome, to the Phenex Man… why is she here?" Ravel started to say politely before she deadpanned as she saw Koneko standing next to Naruto, both having backpacks with them.
"Koneko said she was also your friend, so I invited her along." Naruto admitted smiling so bright it blinded Ravel.
'So… cute…' she thought as she looked away.
"Well… next time, ask beforehand." Ravel said as she scowled as she continued to look away. 'She is going to throw a wrench into my plans for a great sleep over!'
Ravel ushered Naruto and Koneko in.
"Greetings, Young Bael, Young Toujo." Danjuro said as he greeted the mansion's guests. "I am Danjuro, but please call me Gentle."
"Okay." Naruto and Koneko said before they bowed. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Gentle."
Danjuro smiled at their politeness.
"This," Danjuro said as he motioned toward his wife. "Is my wife, Manami."
More greetings were exchanged.
"You two are adorable." Manami said as she smiled at the children… who were exactly her height.
Naruto became red at the accusation.
"I am not cute…"
Manami touched his ears, and with expert motions, Naruto was putty in her hands, smiling as his tail swayed back and forth.
"So, Phenex, what are we going to be doing?" Koneko asked Ravel, who glared at her.
"Well, I was thinking of playing outside after you two drop off your bags." Ravel stated as Danjuro took Naruto's backpack, but Koneko kept hers with her.
"Fine by me." Naruto said in his lulled state, enjoying Manami's petting.
"Follow me." Danjuro said as he started to guide them to their rooms for the night.
Ten Minutes Later…
Naruto laughed as he wrestled with Loona in the grass.
"I got ya. Surrender!" Naruto laughed out as Loona licked his face.
Ravel sighed in relief.
Koneko and Ravel sat at a nearby small table with a parasol in the center.
'I am happy Naruto and Loona are getting along.' She thought as she turned and saw Onimaru just sitting nearby, glaring at Naruto and Loona.
"Your Tenko seems uptight." Koneko said before she drank from her glass of lemonade.
"Shut up, third wheel." Ravel grunted under her breath.
BUT… Koneko heard this grunt.
"I know Naruto better than you do." Koneko said in a dull, flat tone.
"AH, NO~"
Loona tackled Naruto in his fox form, pinning him down as she licked him all over.
But then Onimaru raised a paw and smacked Naruto.
"ONIMARU!"
Said Tenko just rolled his eyes and walked toward a nearby oak tree, curling up before he lay down, taking a nap.
"Ugh, what is with him today?" Ravel asked as Naruto approached the table, carrying Loona on his back.
"Hey, Naruto." Koneko said as she pulled up her bag and opening it.
"Yeah, Koneko?" Naruto asked, putting Loona on the ground before sitting down… with her jumping into his lap, nearly crushing him.
"Check it out."
Naruto looked over Loona, his eyes widening as a big smile appeared on his face.
In Koneko's hands were their old Yugioh card binders.
"You still have them?" Naruto asked in excitement, his tail wagging quickly back and forth.
"Yep, I was able to keep them over the last few years." Koneko said as she pushed them toward Naruto. "I was wondering if we could play a few…"
"YES!"
Koneko glanced at ravel, and smirked cockily.
'Me: One. You: Zero.' Koneko thought as she watched Naruto build a deck.
Ravel growled with a glare.
"What game is this?" Ravel asked curiously. 'I won't be left behind, Third Wheel.'
That evening…
"… Thank you for the meal." Naruto and Koneko said as they clapped their hands together.
Manami and the other maids smiled at the thanks they two young devils gave them.
"Thank you for the meal." Ravel said in delay, not wanting to seem disrespectful.
'Oh, she is playing 'catch up' already.' Layla thought as she giggled at her daughter's attempts.
Currently, it was only the Lady of the House, her youngest child, and their two guests at the table.
Riser was… out of commission.
Jonathan was out on business.
Ruval… was doing whatever he was doing.
Sabo and Kisara took a trip to France on one of Sabo's many whims.
'I feel like something is calling me.' Sabo had told his mother before they had left the day before.
'Hm, I hope nothing happens to them.' Layla thought as she drank some juice.
"Lady Phenex, can I shower in a little bit?" Naruto asked as he felt icky from all the running that he had done earlier.
"I feel the same." Koneko said as she felt the same way.
"Of course, Manami, show them the bath please." Layla asked Manami.
"Of course." Manami said with a bow.
Manami led Naruto and Koneko toward the door.
"May I…"
"You may." Layla interrupted Ravel, allowing her daughter to leave the table and follow after Manami's group.
Manami led the trio to the bath area.
"Enjoy your time." Manami said with a smile as she shut the door.
"Okay, so who…" Ravel started to ask before her eyes popped out of her skull as Naruto and Koneko started to undress. "What are you doing?"
"Uh…"
"Getting undressed to bathe?" Koneko asked in confusion as she and Naruto looked at each other.
"But… Naruto should go alone…"
"Huh? Why?" Naruto asked as he stripped his pants, leaving himself in his underwear.
So red and steamy was Ravel's face, she collapsed, eyes spirals.
"Stupid bird." Koneko mumbled, tossing Ravel out of the bath before locking it.
"Hey, you two need to be nice." Naruto said as he grabbed a very fluffy towel and wrapped it around his waist.
Koneko rolled her eyes as she grabbed her towel.
They entered the bathing room, the tub was like a miniature pool, deep enough for the two of them to float in.
Naruto jumped in, Koneko using her hand to feel the temperature before slowly entering, foot first before she hesitantly entered, both sighing at the warmth as they took some sponges and covered them in soap to use.
"Can you get my back?" Koneko asked Naruto as she turned her back to him, having finished scrubbing her front.
Naruto took the sponge and scrubbed her back.
"Koneko… you don't have to hide yourself from me, you know." Naruto said as he didn't find it correct that Koneko was still hiding her ears and tail.
Koneko didn't answer, staying quiet.
Naruto pouted, his lip jutting out as he held up his finger, partially transforming his hand so his nail was a claw.
Koneko sat in her thoughts, before she felt something run up her back.
A yelp and a puff of smoke later, Koneko sat in the tub with two large cat ears and a cat tail.
"There, that is…"
Koneko's fist caved his face in.
"DON'T…" She shouted as she panted in fear.
She didn't want to acknowledge this part of herself as she reapplied her transformation, her ears and tail vanishing.
"Koneko…" Naruto whimpered as he looked at her with pity.
"Don't… do that…" Koneko said as she shuddered, sinking into the water enough for her nose to be above the water.
"I'm sorry." Naruto apologized before he sank into the water and put Koneko into a one arm hug, leaning his head to touch Koneko's.
Koneko reciprocated, both closing their eyes as they enjoyed the warm water together like they did when they were young.
Meanwhile, Ravel had recovered and was trying to break in the door.
Thirty Minutes Later…
"What movie are we going to be watching?" Danjuro asked as he and Manami sat with Naruto and Ravel while Koneko put in the movie.
"A good one." Koneko said as she wore shorts and a large shirt.
Ravel's nose scrunched at Koneko's choice of clothing.
She herself wore flannel pajamas, red and black.
Manami and Danjuro wore t-shirts and sweatpants.
Naruto wore shorts and a tank top, which Ravel could not stop looking at him via glance.
"Can we get a specific name?" Manami asked as Koneko took the remote and double clicked on the 'Stop' button, small words appearing stating that 'the Movie would start when they hit play'.
"A good one." Koneko said as she sat down, Naruto entering fox form for Koneko to have enough space on the couch with Manami sitting on her husband's lap.
Koneko hit play.
"Koneko, what is this movie?" Naruto asked as he snuggled into Koneko's lap with his tail being in Ravel's lap, who was running her hand through his fur.
"Reanimator." Koneko said as the movie started.
Meanwhile, Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, France…
"Why are we sneaking in to this place, Sabo?" Kisara asked as she looked behind her.
They had arrived in the dead of night, and instead of going off to enjoy their time in France, Sabo decided to sneak into CITY HALL!
"The calling, it is here." Sabo whispered, not really sure if he was going insane. "I can feel it. It's getting stronger."
"Well, if we can't find what is 'calling' you then we should leave in a few minutes." Kisara stated.
She didn't mind the break in, but didn't want to get in trouble with Layla, having seen what she did to Riser's peerage.
The duo continued to search, but to no luck.
Sabo took his hat off and face palmed.
'I must be crazy if…'
"It's you."
Sabo turned and saw no one.
However, before him and Kisara was an instrument of death.
The Half-Moon.
The Machine.
The Silence Mill.
The Regretful Climb.
The National Razor.
In one word…
Guillotine.
Sabo instantly felt it.
Mass amount of energy radiating from the dull blade. It took the shape of what could be called liquid human.
It was black, red, maroon, and gray with white circles for eyes.
"You were the one calling me?" Sabo asked.
He got no answer, but the air around him seemed to lighten.
"Sabo, who are you talking too?" Kisara asked as she didn't see anyone else in the area.
"Kisara, we are leaving soon." Sabo said as he held out his hand.
"Oh, thank good… what are you doing?" Kisara asked as she saw a Knight piece appear in Sabo's hand.
Without words, Sabo tossed the piece into the air, arching forward before it landed on the Guillotine.
Light burst from the contact of the Evil Piece and the Razor, blinding both devils.
As it died, Sabo saw the energy he felt collect itself, taking human shape before him and Kisara.
"What did you do?" the being asked as they looked at their hands, now flesh and blood.
The Guillotine was gone.
It was now this being standing before Kisara and Sabo.
"You are my Knight… uh, do you have a name?" Sabo asked.
"WHAT!" Kisara shouted as she felt panic starting to set it.
"I have… no name…"
"Well, then I guess I'll give you one." Sabo said as he closed his eyes, lip jutting out as he thought.
"Sabo, you can't…"
"Law…" Sabo cut her off, opening his eyes to stare at the very naked human. "Justin. Justin Law, that is your name."
"Justin… Law…" Justin said as he looked over himself. "I like it, master."
Chapter 21, DONE!
Well, I had a lot of fun with this chapter, BUT the location of the Guillotine was a bitch, so if I am wrong and if anyone knows where it is actually located please let me know so I can make the changes.
Yes, Justin Law is a part of Sabo's Peerage, and he is an actual Guillotine, specifically the one who chopped Louis the 16th's head off.
