Prompt: Birds
Saguru came back the next day. Even though Kaito had told him to leave, Saguru still worried about the other man, and Akako was his best bet to learn about Kaito's current condition. However, she was too much of a good friend to Kaito, because when Saguru asked for his current location, Akako's answer was a flat "No."
Yeah, maybe asking for Kaito's location wasn't the best idea, because now it just made Akako entirely unwilling to cooperate. Fuck Saguru's life.
"I just want to know how he is," Saguru protested.
"Physically? Fine," Akako responded. "Mentally? Ask him at his next heist."
"He doesn't have one scheduled yet!" Saguru argued.
Akako sighed. "Knowing him, he'll have one scheduled soon, because how dare he take a longer break from heists."
That made Saguru pause. "You're right. He doesn't take that long of a break between each heist. Why? Why is he even Kaitou Kid?"
Akako froze at that, then turned away. "I don't know what you're talking about. Ask him yourself."
Saguru frowned. "You're lying. You do know."
"Why does it matter to you?" Akako questioned.
Saguru paused, then said, "I want to help Kuroba-kun in any way I can."
Akako stared him in the eyes, then sighed, seeming to give in. "Alright. He's after a jewel called Pandora, said to glow red in the moonlight and give immortality to any who drink its tears."
Saguru stared at her, then continued staring. Evidently Akako got impatient because she snapped her fingers in front of his eyes. "Speak."
Saguru started back and shook his head. "Right. Immortality doesn't exist. Magic doesn't exist."
"You're literally standing in a witch's house," Akako pointed out. "Don't tell me that magic doesn't exist."
Are you actually a witch, though? Saguru wondered, but didn't say so out loud. Alright, I'll put aside everything I've ever learned and believe that Akako-san is a witch. Which means… "Kuroba-kun wants to be immortal?"
Akako shook her head. "No. He wants to destroy Pandora so others can't be immortal."
A shiver went down Saguru's spine. "Snake."
Akako looked at him in surprise. "You know about Snake?"
Saguru nodded. "Yeah. Bad encounter with him once. He's after Pandora, right?" After Akako confirmed this, Saguru took a wild leap and guessed, "He probably killed Kuroba-kun's father too, right?"
"You're smart," Akako groaned. "Yeah, he did."
"So Kuroba-kun… became a criminal for good reasons," Saguru whispered. "I… kind of expected that, honestly. Not the magic gem part, but… yes for all the others."
Akako glanced down at her nails. "Can you leave now? And please don't give me a surprise visit again. You have a phone, you know."
Saguru paused. "Oh. Right. I do."
Akako nodded. "Great. So use it." And with that, she shut the door in his face.
When Saguru got home, his hawk, Watson, landed on his shoulder and lightly nuzzled his face. Saguru smiled, stroking her feathers, before settling down at his desk and pulling out his laptop.
Time to research about Pandora.
Kaito wished that he wasn't living in an old abandoned greenhouse, because really, this greenhouse was, well, old and abandoned. And his doves deserved better.
He sighed as he fed the doves. He had bought enough food for them to last the whole week, but soon he'd have to go out and buy again, with a different disguise and in a different store, probably. That's how it had always worked ever since Kaito had gone on the run.
As Kaito idly fed his doves, he thought about Saguru, then squeezed his eyes shut as he remembered what he'd said to Saguru. The cruelness of his words, and then his love confession…
He started to feel water well up in his eyes, and he blinked it away. Don't think about Hakuba. Not right now.
A soft coo sounded near his ear and he turned to see one of his doves. Kaito smiled lightly. I should concentrate on you guys for now. Hakuba, later.
As Saguru sat at his desk, he went over the few things he knew about Pandora. The internet turned up few results on the gem and more on the Greek myth, and even the few results on the gem treated it as fictitious, nonexistent, no less a myth than the one of the Ancient Greeks. But something bothered him about what Akako had told him about Pandora.
"He's after a jewel called Pandora, said to glow red in the moonlight and give immortality to any who drink its tears."
What was Saguru missing?
"Said to glow red in the moonlight and give immortality to any who drink its tears."
There was something on the edge of Saguru's mind, something that sounded familiar…
"Said to glow red in the moonlight."
And that was it, wasn't it? A gem said to glow red in the moonlight.
Saguru got out of his seat, almost startling Watson, and hurried downstairs to the basement. Rifling through the dust covered boxes, he made a small "Aha!" sound when he found what he wanted.
Saguru pulled out a gem and walked back upstairs and to the nearest window.
As he held it towards the window, it glowed red.
