Prompt: Handcuffs

No matter what he did, Saguru couldn't get in contact with Kaito. He asked Akako many times, hopelessly tried calling his old number even more times, but nothing worked. Saguru was completely cut off from him.

Of course, that meant that he couldn't tell him about the gem.

That led to Saguru getting a bit more creative with how he would pass the news on to the magician. The logical solution was to contact Suzuki Jirokichi. Now, Saguru sat in a room with him, picking a teacup off the plate one of the maids had brought. Saguru scanned her over once when she wasn't looking, quickly determining, with a pang of sadness, that she was not Kid.

"So, Hakuba-kun, what did you want to talk about?" Jirokichi questioned, looking at him.

Saguru took the carefully wrapped package out of his coat pocket and set it down on the table in front of him, in which he proceeded to unwrap it, revealing the gem. "This is a Hakuba family treasure," he said. "We call it Epimetheus's Bane." Epimetheus, Pandora's husband in the Greek myths. The name was always telling us what it truly was, we just never knew about it.

Jirokichi's eyes seemed to shine. "You're telling me that you're offering a jewel for Kid?"

Saguru nodded. "That's exactly it."

Jirokichi looked up at Saguru, carefully studying him. "I've been told that you were Kid's classmate in high school."

What is he hinting at? Saguru wondered, but out loud he said, "I was."

"As long as you aren't soft on him because of that, then I suppose it's all fine," Jirokichi said cheerfully. "I'll take the jewel and publish a challenge notice by this afternoon!"

Saguru relaxed, smiling. "Good."

"See you at the heist!" Jirokichi called out as Saguru got up and left.

Saguru called back a goodbye, but he didn't really concentrate on it. What he did focus on was that finally, he had a way to give Pandora to Kaito.

In hindsight, Saguru really should have considered how his father would feel about him giving away one of the Hakuba family's most prized possessions just to lure out a thief, but in his defense, Saguru had been focused entirely on Kaito.

Of course, this ended with an angry father.

"Saguru." Saguru's father said sternly, glaring at him. "You shouldn't have done that."

"I'm sorry, tousan," Saguru said, despite not really being sorry, but he made himself sound as sincere as possible. "This will only be a one time thing, though." At least that was true, but not for the reasons his father thought.

"What if he never returns it?" Saguru's father questioned.

He won't, and you're going to be pissed when you see the destroyed gem. "We have many family treasures other than Epimetheus's Bane. And if he doesn't give it back, it must be with good reason. I know him, tousan. He isn't really an evil person."

Saguru's father continued glaring at him, then sighed. "Very well. But if I find out that anything horrible is going to happen to the jewel, I will be upset. You know it."

Saguru swallowed. Does an utterly, completely destroyed jewel qualify as horrible?

Kaito was surprised to see another challenge from Jirokichi, but hey, he wasn't going to complain. Any gem could be Pandora.

Kaito just hoped he would be able to find it soon and destroy the organization chasing after it so finally, he could see Saguru again without fear of the other man being killed because of Kaito's actions.

Kaito's heart stopped as he noticed Saguru at his heist. He watched his back for a moment before turning away. I can't bring attention to myself. Besides, we parted on bad terms, didn't we? I doubt he wants a social outing right now.

So Kaito continued along the room in his waiter disguise, giving dishes to all the people who asked for them, quietly keeping an eye on the taskforce.

Soon, Nakamori began his countdown. Kaito readied to take the jewel and leave a note in its place.

Nakamori hit zero, and with a snap of his fingers, that was what happened.

"Kid, where are you?" Nakamori called out furiously, though Kaito spotted a hint of concern on his face and immediately felt guilty. Kaito usually appeared visibly these days, so it made sense that Nakamori would be concerned if he didn't. But right now was not the time. This trick was difficult to perform, but Kaito now had the jewel.

He casually walked out of the room, making it seem like he was heading to get more dishes. He felt eyes on his back and once he was out of sight, he looked back. Saguru was staring at the place he had been. He knows who I'm disguised as now. I have to get out of here quickly.

So Kaito began running towards one of the outside exits. Kaito knew it opened up onto a bridge that led to the building right next to this one. If he could get to the other building, he would have access to his hang glider and would be able to leave.

Come on, Kid… You got this…

A few minutes passed before he reached the bridge. Sighing in relief, Kaito briefly held up the jewel towards the moon shining above, not expecting anything.

Then it glowed red, and Kaito's eyes widened in shock.

"I see you found Pandora," a voice came from behind him, and Kaito whipped around to see Snake and his entourage of gunmen. "Give it to us, Kid."

"No," Kaito snapped at them, immediately closing his fist around the gem. "I won't."

And Kaito dropped the gem, and it landed on the ground, and Kaito stomped on it.

And it shattered.

"No!" Snake yelled. "Kid, you bastard! Get him!"

And the gunmen all came charging at him, firing shots. Kaito dodged most of them but winced when one grazed his arm. I'll get Jii-chan to patch that up for me later, he decided, but the shots kept coming and it was getting harder to dodge them. Can I really keep this up for that long?

"Hands up!"

Kaito startled as the door burst open and Nakamori rushed out, his gun raised at Snake, the massive taskforce flowing in behind him. Snake slowly dropped his gun and raised his hands and Nakamori cuffed him. The rest of the taskforce began detaining the other gunmen as Saguru stepped onto the bridge and walked towards Kaito.

"Kuroba-kun," Saguru greeted, staring at the remnants of Pandora at Kaito's feet. "I'll have so much explaining to do to my father."

Kaito stared at him, confused, but decided to ignore it. He held out his wrists. "The gem is destroyed. I… don't really have a reason to be Kid anymore."

Saguru nodded solemnly. "I know." He took out his handcuffs and snapped them on Kaito's wrists.

Suddenly, Kaito realized the meaning of Saguru's previous comment. "The gem. You gave it to Jirokichi?"

Saguru nodded. "Yeah. I didn't know how else to get it to you."

Kaito smiled lightly. "Thank you." As the rest of the taskforce headed over, he added on, "I guess this is goodbye?"

Saguru nodded again, sadly. "I guess so. I love you too, Kuroba-kun."

Before Kaito could respond, the taskforce reached him, and Kaito found himself being led away.
