And here's the last chapter! Hope everyone enjoyed!
Prompt: Free Day
Kaito had been stuck in his cell for a few days before an officer arrived to escort him out. Kaito looked at him in confusion, but the officer refused to elaborate, so Kaito figured someone else would explain it to him in due time.
He was right.
He reached an interrogation room and the officer opened the door, gesturing for him to step inside. He did so, and stared in surprise at the familiar face he saw.
"Tantei-kun," he greeted.
"Just my name is fine," Kudo Shinichi said. "I'll call you Kuroba, if you'd like."
Kaito swallowed. That's right, he wasn't Kid anymore. He had no reason to be, after all. "Alright. Yeah. Kudo."
Shinichi gestured for Kaito to sit so, and having nothing better to do, Kaito complied. The other man spoke. "I've gotten the PSB to drop all charges on you."
Kaito's eyes widened. "Huh? Why?"
Shinichi sighed. "Yeah, it was a long conversation, but they eventually agreed that your actions were for the good of the people. You're a free man now, Kuroba. And as for why…" He smiled. "As Kid, you helped me many times. I owed you something, at least."
Kaito stared at Shinichi before choking out, "Thank you."
Shinichi rolled his eyes. "Just don't go around stealing any more gems now, okay?"
Kaito nodded assuredly. "Okay." He had no reason to, after all.
Shinichi got up and walked to the door, but he paused before he opened it. "Oh, by the way… There's someone waiting for you outside." He opened it. "See you, Kuroba."
"See you, Kudo," Kaito whispered back as Shinichi left.
Who's waiting for me?
The answer was Hakuba Saguru.
As Kaito spotted the detective, a smile grew on his face. "Hakuba!" he called out, catching Saguru's attention.
Saguru spotted him and immediately smiled as well. "Kuroba-kun," he greeted. "Kudo-kun told me the good news."
"He told me too," Kaito said, still grinning. "Wow, he really gets around."
"Might want to rephrase that," Saguru suggested.
Kaito thought about it, realized what Saguru meant, and said, "Nah. My wording is funnier."
"Anyways…" A light blush appeared on Saguru's face and he turned away a little, breaking eye contact with Kaito. "This may be a little early, especially since you just got out of prison and all, but… You love me. I love you. So I was wondering…"
Kaito's eyes widened, feeling his cheeks heat up as well. "Oh," he breathed out. "Yeah. Sure. Of course."
Saguru smiled. "Great. Now, there's this place I'd like to try out…"
Kaito listened along to Saguru's ideas for date locations, and finally, they agreed on one. After getting a fresh new set of clothes Saguru had bought beforehand, the two headed to their date location.
The first time Kaito had been truly happy these past five years was when he destroyed Pandora and got his revenge. However, that moment had always been clouded in grief.
The second time Kaito was truly happy these past five years was this date with Saguru. And unlike the first time, nothing could possibly taint it.
"Do you have anywhere to live now?" Saguru asked Kaito after their date.
Kaito startled, staring at him, then said, "Not really. I can crash at Jii-chan's place, I guess, or Akako's. Or I could go back to where I was before I was arrested…" His eyes grew wide with horror. "Oh no, my doves!"
Saguru chuckled, looking at Kaito fondly. "They're fine. We found out your most recent location and I saw all your doves there. I couldn't just leave them, so I basically gave them part of the Hakuba Mansion."
Kaito sighed in relief. "Oh, phew. I was so worried…" He smiled at Saguru.
Saguru felt his chest grow warm. "Well, speaking of the Hakuba Mansion… Would you like to move in?"
Kaito stared at him. "...huh?"
"Well, you have nowhere else to stay," Saguru said. "And, well, maybe this is too soon since we just started dating, but I have been in love with you for years, and I'm guessing it's the same with you. I'm fine with you moving in. In fact, I'd love for you to move in."
Kaito coughed awkwardly. "Yeah, uh, this is a little fast. But yeah. Sure. I'll move in." A blush tinged his cheeks. "I'll just check in with Jii-chan and Akako though to make sure I can crash at their places whenever."
Saguru nodded. "That's smart. And speaking of friends, maybe you could meet up with Aoko-san again."
Kaito's eyes widened. "Yeah, I'd love to see her again, it's been so long…" He grinned. "You said she had something going on with Keiko?"
"I said probably," Saguru clarified, but Kaito was already going on.
"She'd better fess up when I talk to her," Kaito said stubbornly. "I'm her best friend, she can't hide that from me!" He paused, then said, "Well, I was her best friend…"
"You probably still are," Saguru said reassuringly. "Ready to head back to my place? I'll call Aoko-san over when I can."
Kaito grinned. "Great. Your father will be fine with this?"
"I'll have a talk with him if he isn't," Saguru said.
Kaito leaned forward and kissed Saguru. Saguru immediately kissed back. Moments later, when Kaito finally pulled away, he said, "I love you."
Saguru smiled. "I love you too."
