Kayn looked very nervous and excited.
"Father, can you do me a favor first?"
A question Zed did not expect. Kayn had never asked for a favor before. "What is it?"
"I'd like to know if she's really is dead and at least bury her body."
Ah, he figured something like that.
"You want me to do a big search for her body?"
Kayn nodded cautiously. "Yes, if it's not too inconvenient for you, Father."
Zed sighed. Kayn's urge to always please Zed was really big. Zed wondered if his son would ever get a little braver with him.
"I will arrange that in a moment. And then we'll go to the healers."
Zed smiled and tried to calm Kayns down a bit. He put a hand around his shoulder and squeezed him.
Then they both left the student quarters and Zed led them to a small workroom. In there, some masters were sitting and studying the documents they had received from Beixing. Good, they were at work. So hard that no one noticed their presence.
Zed walked straight up to Ysdra.
"Master Ysdra."
She startled noticeably and looked up. Her eyes grew wide and she stared at the two for a moment.
"Lord Zed, Young Master Kayn, sorry I didn't notice you. How can I help you?"
"I did notice. I want you to conduct a large-scale search for Bailong Beixing. Bring her to me. Alive or dead."
Ysdra did not seem surprised by this task. "Of course,I will initiate everything right away. If I am allowed one more question?"
"Ask."
"What happens to Master Kayns son, basically he is an heir, but he is also a bastard-"
Kayns blushes in embarrassment and makes a move that suggests he wants to run away, but Zed holds him and presses him against him. After that, he will not move any further.
"Mind your own business and don't talk about my grandson like that!" Zed hisses and turns away, leaving the room.
"Don't listen to them, I will teach them respect." Kayn was still shaking and nodded slightly. "Thank you father."
Zed had thought this would be a problem, but he hadn't expected an Order full of Assassins to blaspheme like this.
He would deal with it later. Right now, though, he wanted to see his grandson. His shock had given way to joy and excitement. The thought of being able to raise a baby with his family from the beginning warmed his heart.
Shortly after, they both arrived at the infirmary. A healer received them.
"Lord Zed, Young Master Kayn, how may I be of service?"
"We would like to see the baby we found."
"Of course, Room 3."
Zed nodded his thanks and put an arm around Kayn's waist and pulled him to him to reassure him. Just before they entered the room, Zed stopped for a moment.
"Don't worry, I'm here for you."
Kayn nodded his thanks but couldn't make a sound.
Carefully Zed opened the door and they both entered.
It was one of the smallest rooms. The sickbed had been converted, blankets had been placed on the bed so that a kind of border was created and the baby in the bed could not fall out. In the middle of the bed was a bundle of white linen to see, in there was indisputably the baby.
On the side of the bed was a small table and chair with a pair of baby bottles on it (Zed wondered where they came from).
And a healer was sitting at the table writing something on documents.
The healer slowly and quietly turns to them and greets them both quietly.
Both understood this and walked towards him.
"You want to check on the baby?" Asked the healer in a whisper.
They both just nodded in response.
"Good." He stood up and walked to the bed. Carefully he then took the bundle in his arms and turned to Zed.
"No, give him to my son first." Whispered Zed.
"Of course." Understanding, he turned to Kayn.
"It's best if you sit on the bed for this."
Kayn did so. Then the healer carefully put the bundle in his arm and showed him how to hold it.
Kayn's eyes grew wide as he got a better look at his child, then single tears ran down his cheek.
Zed sat down next to him to get a better look at the baby.
Zed had not seen many babies, but this one was much smaller than any he had seen. His skin was very pale, almost like Zed's own. He already had a good bit of raven black hair on his head.
His eyes were still closed and he has some of his fingers in his mouth. There was also no denying that he was Kayn's son. His eye features, nose and mouth were like his father's.
Zed felt something in his heart that he had not felt in a long time. He had a strong desire to protect this little bundle of life from everything.
"Kayn... He's wonderful."
Kayn just nodded in response and couldn't take his eyes off his son.
Kayn carefully pressed a kiss to the baby's forehead.
Zed knew that Kayn had the capacity to love, even if he did everything he could to make everyone else think otherwise, and he was pleased that he had developed it so quickly to his son.
"He's so small...is that the normal size for a two week old baby?" Kayns asked, voicing a question that was also on Zed's mind.
The healer sighed, "To be honest, no. I didn't believe he was 'already' two weeks old at first, he's not even as big as a newborn."
Zed and Kayn looked at each other worriedly.
"Is that dangerous?" asked Zed.
"Not necessarily. Right now we can tell that his health is fine, considering the circumstances. But he could have problems in the future. We should keep a closer eye on him."
Both nodded.
As long as he is doing well, it doesn't matter that he is small. And if he is not well, Zed will do everything he can to make him well.
"Father, can I give him our last name?"
Zed raises his eyebrows. He really wanted to give him his name? Even though it's a farmer's name?
"If that's what you want."
"Fine then, his name is Shieda Shi-Mei now."
Zed smiled as he could hear the pride from Kayn's voice.
"Do you want to hold him too father?"
Of course he wanted to! Zed took Shi Mei out of Kayn's arm and held him gently. He was really light as a feather and Zed was afraid he might break him with the slightest movement.
The little one then started to make noises and opened his eyes. He had the brightest blue eyes he had ever seen. They were literally glowing. Zed was trying to remember if Baixing had such bright eyes, but he couldn't remember.
"He certainly didn't get those eyes from you" he chuckled.
"True, although Beixing doesn't have such bright eyes either... But tell father do you feel that too?"
The white-haired one wondered what he meant. Feel what? "What do you mean-"
Then he felt it too. A strange kind of magic pulsed inside the little one. It felt like a rapid heartbeat. It was almost unnoticeable so faint it was. Zed had never encountered anything like it and couldn't tell what it was. Frowning, he looked at the little one.
"Yeah, you're right."
"Do you have any idea what that could be?"
"I'm afraid not, I've never sensed anything like it." He turned to the healer. "Do you know what this is?" The healer looks surprised and didn't know what was going on.
"I'm sorry, my lord, but I don't know what you mean."
"So you don't feel it?"
He shook his head.
Strange. Maybe the magic was only felt by people who had an affinity for magic?
To the little one, though, all the chatter around him seems to get on his nerves and he starts to fidget.
He grumbled and took his fingers out of his mouth. Then he grabbed Zed's top with the same hand and clawed at it.
"Very tasty" Kayn said sarcastically.
Zed could only laugh in response.
"Maybe Shen knows what that magic is."
"Yeah maybe..." his son immediately became nervous again.
"You know you can't avoid talking to Shen about him."
Kayn sighed "yeah I know."
"You really don't have to be afraid. He'll be very surprised but not angry. I'm sure."
Zed was sure Shen will be VERY surprised.
