Hi, so here is another chapter and I hope that you enjoy it. This chapter was supposed to introduce Jacob but it just didn't fit so no Jacob this chapter but he will come into this story in the next chapter.
Disclaimer-Nothing here is mine just this chapter.
This chapter does delve into the Carlisle/Emmett/Rosalie relationship. Carlisle's relationship's with his 'kids' is not something that I wish was explored a bit more other than Edward. His relationship with Rosalie and Emmett in the books is consigned to chastising Rosalie for not loving Bella more. This story is my way of giving a bit more of a in depth look at this relationship.
I am taking this story back to Rosalie's point of view for the next chapter but there will be another set of Emmett's point of view coming up during the whole wolves debacle.
Nothing here is mine.
And some trigger warnings for the pregnancy and Rosalie's story.
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
Chapter 6-Some People Just Want To Watch The World Burn
Emmett has a conversation with Carlisle as the baby progresses within Bella. And there's an unwelcome voice on the edge of the horizon.
"Experience is a brutal teacher but you learn. My God do you learn" C.S. Lewis.
It didn't go well.
To be honest Emmett was not sure what he had expected but it was clear as time both the friend and the enemy of the vampire, progressed that the pregnancy (if you could even call it that) was not going well.
First it was the speed. She had been back a week and already Emmett knew that Bella looked ready to go at any moment. Granted he didn't know much of pregnancy but from what he had seen in this life and his old one and what he had read when he had contemplated a medical degree that one time in the 1940s he knew enough to know that when a woman looked like that the baby was due to come out. And that it was supposed to take nine months not seven days.
Then there had been the blood spots. The ugly vibrant purple thing that showed up on Bella's skin daily now. She claimed it was just the baby stretching but when the 'baby' stretched and broke a rib on the Tuesday that had been too much. Jasper constantly pushed the edge by a house full of mixed emotions ranging from disgust to horror to love had snapped and thrown so much calm at Edward that he had been walking around in an almost catatonic state for most of the night.
Or maybe that was just Edward now because to be honest sometimes looking at his brother Emmett thought about calling up the Volturi himself just to get the job done. It was too raw, too visceral, to painful to be in the same room as his brother sometimes never mind looking at him.
And against all odds Rosalie and Bella were still locked at the hip which meant that he had to be in the room too looking at the little murderer in Bella's stomach hack her apart from the inside out and the look of utter love that passed on his wives face almost daily when she looked at it moving, stretching, breaking the bones of the fragile human that was trying her best to keep up with it.
What was worse than looking at Edward was looking at his wife. Looking at the thrill and the delight in her eyes everytime the baby moved. Looking at the smile she shared with Bella. Because this was wrong…this was all so wrong. Watching Rosalie come alive (pardon the pun) with that offspring was just wrong. Watching his wife become devoted to it was making his skin crawl. He had gone into this backing his wife but now he had seen the dedication that she was prepared to put in for something he was sure was going to have to use it's teeth to get out of he wasn't sure he could stand it. It was his own form of burning, both he and Edward trapped, watching the woman they loved dedicate their existence to a monster.
More than once when he thought this he could see Edward's eyes shift to him. Knew that his thoughts were broadcast across the room deep and dark enough to give Edward a spark of hope that he could have an ally. He had them in Alice and Jasper, Carlisle too the second Esme showed that she too could shift her approach. The issue was Rosalie. If Emmett could bring Rosalie back to common sense then this whole thing could be over.
He didn't need to be a mind reader to know what Edward was thinking when his eyes burning with misery switched from his wife to Emmett. Edward was pressing for an opening, desperate for any form of weakness and it was always Emmett who had to shake his head a fraction and watch as that small flicker of hope died again.
It wasn't even like it was a choice for him, it was Rosalie, it was his wife, his heart, his…well to some extent his Bella. He was backing the woman he loved because for him there was no other option, there was no Emmett without Rosalie, no light in the eternal starry sky. They had been in each other's lives for over half a century now. There was no way they existed without the other. When the newborns had been coming at them she had hated the idea of him going to fight with the wolves but she had come with him. When she helped their sister in law commit suicide by vampire baby he might not like it but he was going to back her. It was how they worked. There was no Emmett without Rosalie, no Rosalie without Emmett…it was simple love, devotion, trust.
Sorry Edward.
Edward didn't seem to hear him though.
Edward didn't seem to hear much these days.
Alice on the other hand was another story. She kept her distance mostly because Bella and Rosalie were blurry in her vision and it was giving her a headache the likes of which she had never experienced before. When she did spend time with them mostly when Bella was asleep the depths of the hatred in the look that she shot Rosalie was enough to set his teeth on edge the snarl building in his throat. Rosalie for the most part was immune.
Emmett watching in silence from where he was the silent statue wondered just briefly one morning as the sun rose again hot and still in the one day in August that Forks would have sun, if it was simply just down to the fact that Bella had chosen Rosalie. Rosalie who had understood what Bella had wanted in a way that Alice could not. Both his wife and his mother understood Bella's need to have a child more than anyone else in the room. Even Carlisle who loved them all like his own didn't understand it.
And there was a more practical thing to consider. Bella would not take anything that would harm the baby. An IV had been all Carlisle had been able to do and that was just for fluids that Emmett was pretty sure whatever it was in there was rejecting straight from the off. So there was blood in the house, human blood, fresh, hot, pumping away and none of them had fed in what felt like weeks but was in fact days. It was getting harder as well. Nobody wanted to leave the house, all of them poised on the edge to see what would happen next.
Just watching as the world they knew burned down.
"Emmett?"
"Yes Jasper?"
"Can you please try and stop being so fucking dramatic? Your emotions are all over the show and it's giving me emotional whiplash"
Emmett opened his mouth to tell Jasper exactly what he could do with his emotional whiplash but Bella who had been asleep shifted a little on the couch and he realised with a swooping feeling that whenever Bella moved they all moved with her.
Edward was still silent, still watching, forever watching.
"Rose" he said softly. "I am going to get some fresh air on my face"
She could see through the lie, she always could and she was not the only one, he was a vampire, they didn't need fresh air but he had to get out of the room. Rosalie was still sat at Bella's side her eyes on Edward and Emmett shot his brother a look thinking clearly.
"Even think of trying it Edward and I will take the whole fucking back wall out before you even get off the floor"
If Edward had heard him he did a damn good job of not listening. But then again Emmett was not sure that Edward had. He was not sure what Edward heard these days. Wasn't sure if his brother could even see past the nightmare that was unfolding before them.
He stood up and slid out the side door and padded silently down to the garage. He was three point two seconds away from Rosalie and he was primed. He was not entirely sure that the presence of Esme at Bella's side would detract Alice and Jasper and Edward if they saw their opening.
He leaned back against the wall but didn't dare put his full weight against it. One of the problems with being this strong was sometimes you just wanted something or someone to catch your weight and of course there wasn't.
He closed his eyes trying to find something to centre him. Birds, the water…anything.
"Emmett? Son?"
He opened his eyes blinking. He imagined if he was human he might have started crying at the look on Carlisle's face alone. It wasn't until he saw the concern and love etched on his father's face that he realised he had been worried. Worried that siding with Rose in this insane scheme might have cost him the love and trust and respect that had over time come to mean everything to him. Carlisle didn't just play the role of father for the humans. For Emmett he was the father. And Christ knows he shouldn't say it but more of a father than his own had been God rest his soul.
"Carlisle"
"Are you alright?"
"No. You?"
Carlisle let out a small sardonic little smile.
"No son I wouldn't say I am no"
"I'm sorry"
He tried to say a lot in those two words, he wanted to say he was sorry for Rosalie, for standing by her, for helping her essentially euthanise Bella on a wing and a prayer. He wanted to say he was sorry for suggesting that they stay the first time when it would have been easy for them all to get the hell out of dodge when Bella had first been saved from that car. He wanted to say that he was sorry but it was Rosalie, for him baby or monster it didn't matter. It was his wife and he wanted to say sorry for the incredible amount of pain that was circulating in that room.
The world was burning, Edward was burning and here they all were watching it burn. Some people just wanted to watch the world burn.
He would have never have thought he was one of them.
Carlisle to his credit said nothing. Instead his hand came out to squeeze Emmett's shoulder.
"I know son" he murmured. "I know."
"There isn't a way around this" Emmett said finally. "Not for me. It's simple, Rosalie and…and Bella…Bella's body, Bella's choice. Even if I don't agree"
"I know that too."
Carlisle spoke with something heavy in his tone and Emmett wanted to ask him if Edward had told him that Bella had consented over the phone before they had left Rio. He wanted to ask if Edward had planned this whole thing weather or not Bella had wanted it or not. If he had seriously been plotting to attack and forcibly abort his wife's…well whatever it was, but he didn't.
He wasn't sure he could watch Carlisle when he asked that.
Carlisle to his credit though seemed to understand.
"I think" he said carefully. "I think your brother always assumed that this was Bella's choice. I don't think he ever considered it any other way. I confess I was surprised by it too."
"And Rosalie?"
"Oh I am less surprised by Rosalie" Carlisle said finally. "I knew the second…probably when Jasper did. And then Esme…" he trailed off and Emmett knew he was thinking of his wife who had staked her own claim and made it impossible for anything to progress. Even Edward as grief ravaged as he was would struggle to hurt Esme. Even the thought was beyond words.
"I wish to God I could give her what she wanted" he said bitterly. He knew there was a very strong reality that Rosalie could hear what he was saying but if he was being honest with himself it was nothing that neither one of them had said to each other before. She knew, he knew. Children…always children with them.
"Emmett—"
"I just…I love this life…I love her…I love this family and I never wanted children Carlisle but I just…I'd have wanted hundreds with Rosalie. And today I just…if I could have been able to give her a child then maybe…"
He couldn't finish the sentence. His wife was probably listening and he couldn't find it in him to speak aloud what he was thinking which was that if he could give her the baby that she had always wanted, the one part of her human dream that had never changed with wealth, money and power and the heartbreaking maturity that she had been forced to gain…he couldn't say to his father that if there was a golden haired girl dancing around upstairs letting her mother dress her then this would all be over. Rosalie was living vicariously through Bella and he understood it but it gnawed at him nonetheless. This was his wife. And he couldn't do anything but support her and the guilt of that alone was getting difficult to bear.
And this was after a week. With Bella alive. What was going to happen when she died? When it was three hundred years on from now and she was nothing but ash and dust and the monster inside of her reduced to ash.
If there was a way that they could just see what was inside of her! A way to see weather or not this was a human baby inside of her! Or at least something that looked like one because this internal breakdown that came with not knowing was killing him. He didn't have Rosalie's blind faith. He had never had any kind of faith really.
"Sometimes" Carlisle said quietly, so quietly that even for vampire ears it was a strain to hear it. "Sometimes I wish the same thing. I know your mother loves you…all of you but sometimes…"
He didn't say anything but Emmett understood. Sometimes the thoughts of what the unlived life could have been like was too much. It was a brief flicker he supposed. Carlisle and Esme would have never have met, Alice and Jasper the same, Rosalie and him…well…they were born in the same time but two different states and two very different backgrounds…and Edward and Bella…
Having a family with your soulmate mattered less he supposed when your soulmate wasn't even a twinkle in the starry sky.
"Do you hate us?"
He hated that it came out childish-like but he had to ask nonetheless.
Carlisle's hand moved to his neck and his grip was strong when he forced Emmett to look at him.
"Never" he said softly. "I might not always agree with your decisions Emmett but you and Rosalie are my children now just as much as you were before this started. My love for you never chances…never. And…and I do understand it. I don't necessarily agree with it. But I understand it."
He was sure that last bit was not meant for him but for the golden haired daughter that he loved, that he still loved, and the love that he had for her had sprung up out of that acknowledgement that he could the girl who was a little more broken and a little more selfish and less of a good person than he was.
"We should go inside son" Carlisle said finally. "I fear that we need to make plans. I worry…I worry about the wolves, Bella and Edward were supposed to come back from their honeymoon today. They will want to know what has changed. And I suppose they will demand to see proof that Bella is still human. Certainly I imagine Jacob Black will"
Shit. Emmett had forgotten about the wolves.
"They won't like this" was all he said.
"No" Carlisle said still looking out onto the horizon. "No I don't think they will"
He turned and Emmett before he could stop himself grabbed his wrist and pulled him into a hug. Carlisle hugged him back. There was never a moment where he didn't hug them back. Hugs between their parents was different. Esme hugged easily and her hugs were easy to accept but Carlisle always let them do things at their own pace. Emmett could count the amount of times he'd hugged either one of them on one hand. Shoulder pats, arm hugs, headlocks yeah sure but a hug?
But he hugged Carlisle then and he tried to put a lot of things he couldn't say…hell that he could barely think into it.
Carlisle to his credit understood.
"Come on son" he said turning around and going back to the house after they pulled apart and Emmett followed him looking at the back of his head and feeling a great wave of regret and remorse for the terrible inconvenience that he and Rosalie were helping Bella Swan put him through.
And there you go, I hope you enjoy this chapter and I will do my best to bring you the next one together sooner rather than later.
Next Chapter-Jacob Black makes an appearance, Rosalie and Alice's relationship get's dramatically worse. Back to Rosalie's point of view for this chapter.
