Chapter 12
Dr. Woodard slowly opened the door to Amanda's room. He sighed; this was a risk. Amanda was headstrong, and if she was true to her word then she would never talk to Elizabeth again. He stood in the doorway waiting for Mandie to look up. It felt like hours past, she still didn't look up.
"Amanda, how are you feeling?"
She looked at her father-in-law. Oh, how he looked so much like Joe. Mandie could feel a lump in her throat.
"What are you doing here? I asked mother NOT to send you up here."
Noah took a couple steps forward.
"We were worried about you. I would like to make sure that you were in tip top shape."
He walked to the edge of her bed and set the food on the side table.
"Please let me do a check up on you and the baby."
Mandie considered this. She had to put the baby first.
"Fine."
Dr. Woodard smiled. "Good."
There was awkward silence as Dr. Woodard examined Mandie.
"The baby semes to be in good health. You just need to take it easy for a couple of weeks."
"Weeks!" Mandie thought.
Dr. Woodard cleared his throat.
"I'm sorry, I'll take it easy." Answered Mandie.
He sat down and sighed. "If you don't mind, I would like to know what happened. Everything was going so well. You and Joe were so happy…"
Mandie couldn't hear whatever else he was saying. Memories of Joe filled her mind. Tears spilled down her eyes.
"Amanda!"
Mandie quickly snaped out of it.
"What's wrong?"
"Get out of my room!" Yelled Mandie.
Shocked and surprised he quickly stood up.
"I'm sorry. I just wanted to know what happened to my son."
Mandie covered her face with her hands.
Noah knelt beside her.
"Amanda please tell me what's going on?"
"He's gone!" Cried Mandie.
…
The parlor door swung open. Both Elizabeth and John turned around. In walked Dr. Woodard and Mandie.
"Amanda!" Cried Elizabeth. She quickly got up to assist Mandie to a chair.
Noah sat down.
"What's going on?" Asked John. "You look pale."
"I think Mandie has something to tell us."
Mandie could fell all eyes fall on her as she shifted uncomfortable in her chair.
"I-I don't know were to start." She said. Her voice shook at every word.
"They took me to this house. It was awful! I asked where Joe was." At this point tears were streaming down her face. She couldn't talk. The lump in her throat was too big. She could feel her mother's loving arms wrap around her.
"He's dead." These words can out no more then a whisper. Mandie was afraid, very afraid.
Elizabeth and John looked at each other then at Dr. Woodard.
"Amanda honey, please could you speak up." Asked Elizabeth.
Her shoulders shook. The words wouldn't come out. She didn't want to believe it.
"He's dead." She yelled. It felt horrible saying these words, but something inside her felt good that she was telling her family. They know the horrible thing, that she felt like was digging a hole deep down in her heart. She covered her face with her hands. She heard her mother gasp, like she was losing another child all over again. She could see in her mind Dr. Woodard's face which is full of sorrow. Her Uncle didn't have any words to say, he was just looking of into space, like it was the end of the world.
Mandie shoulders shook this was not a dream, but real life. How could this happen to her, to her family. Silence filled the room, as everyone though about Joe.
"Amanda, I'm so sorry." Her mother said. How could she help her daughter who just lost her husband.
John stood up and walked other to Mandie. He grabbed her hand and helped her up. Mandie looked at her uncle's face searching for something. He quickly brought her close to his chest, wrapping his arms around her. He held her a tight as he dared, putting his head on hers. The thought of Joe dead seamed to swallow him whole. There were only two feelings that he felt, he just lost his son-in-law, and his pregnant niece lost a husband. An hour passed quickly as the family tried to help Mandie in this time of loss.
Dr. Woodard was the first to speak.
"We all should get some sleep. It's been a long day, and Amanda needs to rest up."
Elizabeth and John helped Mandie up to her room. How much of this could she take, how much can the baby take. Elizabeth quickly changed Mandie into a nightgown. They laid her down in her bed.
"Good night honey." Said Elizabeth. Her kissed her on her forehead. She walked to the doorway.
She looked at John. "Are you coming?"
He looked at her. "I'll be there in a moment."
Elizabeth nodded and left.
John sat on the edge of Mandie's bed.
"I love you."
Mandie smiled through all the tears.
"I'm so sorry this happened, and if there is anything that I can do to help just let me know."
Mandie sat up and hugged her uncle. "Thank you."
"I should go."
Mandie grabbed onto her uncle.
"Please don't go!"
Mandie moved to the other side on the bed.
John sighed. He slipped into the bed with her. He could feel her body getting closer to his. Her head on his chest. John could feel tears on his chest.
"Why did this happen to me?" She cried
"I don't know. I don't know." He kissed the top of her head.
"Lord help her. She needs you right now!"
I fixed the mistakes! Thx for letting me know! ;)
