Chapter 6: A Sinful Melody Part 2
To most people Lincoln Loud was just your average twenty-one year old. Well as average as any twenty-one year old walking through a mall could be... (That sounds a little bit too average.)… Oh, he's also lost in another universe... (That's better.)
Lincoln kept placing one foot in front of the next as he aimlessly meandered about the Royal Woods mall. When he saw the mall from outside it looked exactly the same as the one he knew, but now that he was inside he could see all the differences. Most of the stores Lincoln knew had been replaced with others. The tiny "Noddy's" toy shop he used to visit as a child was a giant "Toys R We" in this universe.
'Probably time I went and found that music shop.' Lincoln thought as he looked up at the giant skylight.
He knew he'd agree to meet her there, but a part of him still wanted to run and hide. 'It might be a trap.' His mind raced. She might be Luna, but she wasn't his Luna. They had no true emotional bond.
'Now Lincoln, you can't run away from your problems forever.' He could almost hear his mother chastise him. He knew she was right… but he wished she wasn't.
Thwack!
Lincoln groaned as he fell onto his rear.
"Hey, watch it!" A man said looming over the fallen Lincoln. Having not paid attention to where he was going Lincoln had accidently smashed into someone.
"Lincoln? Hey buddy, how've you been?" A man with frizzy red hair and asked as he reached down to help Lincoln up.
"Mister Spokes? Lincoln hadn't seen the door-to-door salesman in years but he still looked the same.
"Mister? Since when do you call me mister?" The man asked tilting his head.
"R-Rusty?" Lincoln was absolutely shocked. He knew rusty and his father shared a lot of family traits, but this? Lincoln felt like he was looking at an exact copy of Rodney Spokes. Complete with shabby looking suit.
"Well duh. What's up with you man? Why are you looking at me like you haven't seen me in years? We had poker night the a couple weeks ago."
The taller man asked as he reached over to grab hold of Lincoln's hair. "And what's with the rug? I thought you said you'd never be caught dead wearing one these?" Rusty asked as he tried pulling the 'rug' off of Lincoln's head.
"Ow, Rusty! That's my real hair!" Lincoln yelped.
The man quickly let go. "Wow, it really is real." Rusty took a few steps back. "How did you manage to grow it back? Let me guess, Lisa?" Much like the Rusty in his universe, this Rusty seemed well aware of Lisa's many experiments.
"And why do you look so young? Did Lisa create a de-aging aging ray!? Please tell me she created a de-aging! I'm sick of paying alimony!" Rusty begged with tears in his eyes. "Take me back to the good old days!" He yelled shaking Lincoln violently.
"That's not how de-aging works." A sour faced girl with long sandy brown hair and a very prominent pointy nose said. If Lincoln had to guess he'd say she was around the same age as Lynn's daughter.
"Oh Marla, I forgot you were here." It looked almost like all of Rusty's emotions had been sucked away once the little girl arrived. "Lincoln. Marla. Marla. Lincoln." He said waving from one to the other.
"I'm not an idiot. I know who Mister Loud is."
Lincoln gave a little wave. This was starting to get uncomfortable. "Hello Marla."
The girl crossed her arms and continued to look at him with that same sour expression. "Is Lacy here?" She asked.
Guess she knew one of other Lincoln's kids. "No sorry. I think she's still at home." He replied.
It was time for Rusty to speak up again. "Ok, you asked the man now go play or something." He said using both hands to shoo her off.
"So what's up? Explain." He motioned at Lincoln's… everything.
'I might as well tell him the truth.' Lincoln thought. "I'm from another universe." That was easy.
"…"
"…"
"Lisa?"
"Lisa."
"C'mon. Follow me. We've got a lot to talk about. Hah, I bet you're gonna hear that often." His-not-friend chuckled as he led him to a nearby store.
"Welcome to "Rusty's Secondhand Furniture Emporium"! Your one stop shop for all your secondhand furniture needs!" He exclaimed proudly as a man was shot through the shop's front window. "Ignore that." Rusty said not even bothering to look.
At first glance Lincoln could tell store wasn't nearly as extravagant as the man's boisterous exclamation made it seem. It looked more like a pawnshop for used beds and couches than an actual furniture store.
But Rusty seemed pretty happy with what he had.
"Now step into my office, Lincoln." The older man said as he led Lincoln to a couple couches in the far left corner of the store. "Grab a seat bud." Rusty said plopping onto a lazy boy. Lincoln sat down, a spring shooting out of the upholstery right next to him. "Just watch out for springs." Rusty added as if it was completely normal.
"Marla! Get the duct tape!" Rusty hollered leaning over the back of his seat.
Within seconds the girl stomped over and abruptly smacked a piece of tape over the hole.
"Thank you."
If looks could kill Marla would be locked up for life. "…whatever..." She grumbled and headed off to do whatever a kid her age does in a used furniture store.
"So that's really your daughter?" Lincoln asked watching the girl disappear.
"That's what her mother tells me. But who knows. Maybe she's yours." Lincoln swore he saw a glimmer of hope in Rusty's eyes.
He was about to tell the older man how absurd that sounded until he remembered his older self had at least six children with three different women. "…that's a bit harsh, don't you think?"
Rusty made a little tsk sound. "Eh, she isn't really that bad. It's her mother." He visibly shivered. "She's really a dragon in disguise. Never ask a girl on a date when you're blinded by hay fever." He warned.
Lincoln raised a finger. "I got a question. Why if you didn't like did you marry her?"
Rusty reached for a lever on the side of his seat. "I ask myself that question every day." He kicked out a footrest.
"Uh-huh." Lincoln squinted. Having known a version of Rusty in his universe he was pretty sure he'd driven the poor woman to it. He wiggled some as he tried his best to find a comfy spot on the overly lumpy couch. "So according to Lisa I got sucked into some kind of black hole and tossed out here." He tried getting back on track.
"A black hole? Wowee, that's something. What did other Lincoln say when he found out?"
"You see that's the thing. We don't know where he is." Lincoln replied.
"What do you mean you don't know where he." Rusty asked leaning forward.
"I don't know." Lincoln honestly didn't know what had happened to the other him.
"Okay but how are we going to get him back?" He asked for once in his life sounding serious.
Lincoln just sat there looking at the dirty rug underneath their feet. What was he supposed to say?
A now very pale looking Rusty said as he sunk back into his seat. "He might be dead. You know that right?"
It was weird that Rusty was the first one to verbalize what everyone else had secretly tried to deny. "I-I know. He and my whole universe." Lincoln said leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "Rust, I don't know what I'm gonna do."
The man continued to sit there in shock. "We played poker a couple weeks ago." He repeated what he had said earlier. "…fuck…" Rusty gulped trying his best to swallow down his sadness. He had gotten some practice putting on a strong face for his father and little brother when his mother passed away.
"What's he doing her?" Said a tall man carrying a sofa on his back. Much like Rusty this man had frizzy red hair and a face littered with freckles.
"Rocky?" He waved to the young man. "How are you?"
"Oh, shit. You gotta go Lincoln."
"W-what, why?" Lincoln asked as he was suddenly shoved towards the exit.
"Rocky's still pretty upset about what happened at his wedding."
"Wedding? Wait, Rocky got married? Congratulations!" Lincoln's heels skid over the tile floor as Rusty kept pushing him faster and faster towards the exit.
Rusty was practically drenched in nervous sweat once they reached the exit. "He was gonna until Lucy left him at the altar because of you."
"M-me? What did I do?" Lincoln asked stumbling a couple steps out the furniture store.
"Not you, other you. Never mind. Here take this." Rusty said reaching into his back pocket. "Call me as soon as you find out what's going on, OK?" He said handing Lincoln a worn business card.
He understood. "I will. Oh, and Rusty. Please don't tell anyone else about "you know what"."
"J-just go, now." Rusty said pointing at nearby side corridor.
Leaning to look over Rusty's shoulder Lincoln spotted the fuming Rocky making his way towards them. That was enough to send him stumbling into a run as Rusty went to intercept his much taller little brother.
Yeah. This was a good time to go. The slightly overweight young man went off again. It was odd how similar this world was to his own. Right up to the mall. Lincoln still remembered the day Lynn showed them to him and his friends. Since then they had used them to get about the mall and escape mall security.
Eventually Lincoln came to stop once he reached the mall food court. Leaning against a white pillar he slid down onto the cool tiled floor. 'Damn. I haven't run this much since Lynn still lived at home.'
"A-are you alright?" 'Shit! Did Rocky find me already?' Lincoln thought looking up. But what he saw wasn't an angry redheaded giant but the most beautiful blonde woman he'd ever seen. If cupid was real Lincoln was sure he just got a headshot. She had frizzled blonde hair that hung just past her shoulders. Her smile was little crooked and the dark rings around her eyes made her look like she hadn't gotten a lot of sleep lately, but her eyes… her actual eyes… they made him feel like he had fallen into the bluest pools of water in the entire universe. So blue that Lincoln hadn't even noticed her slightly snug white and vertical striped yellow uniform.
"I-I-I." Lincoln stammered as he stood up.
"A-are you sure you're ok?" She stammered back.
"Uh, y-yeah. I'm fine. Thanks!" Lincoln practically shouted that last part. "S-sorry." Lincoln said reaching to rub the back of his neck. Something he often did when embarrassed. Almost like a nervous tick.
She smiled and looked off to the side. "It's OK!" She slammed her hands over her mouth. She hadn't meant for it to come out that loud.
"Y-You're..." Lincoln felt like a fool just standing there but he was completely mesmerized with her. "…beautiful."
She reached up and started twirling a strand of her hair around her finger. "You really think so?"
"Wait, how late is it?" He asked looking up at the giant clock in the middle of the food court.
"Six thirty!" He was late! "I gotta go! Nice meeting you!" He waved as he ran off to find the music store.
"B-but… what's your name?" She was left standing there watching him disappear.
"Who was that?" A slightly tubby young woman asked walking up.
"I-I don't know." Sadness clouded her features. "I didn't get to ask him." She whispered looking down at the floor.
That sounded like her alright. The larger one sighed. "I'm sure you'll see him again, Loan."
"I hope so."
"You're late dude!" A raspy voiced Luna Loud yelled as Lincoln ran up to her.
"S-sorry." He said falling to his knees. "Need. To. Catch. My. Breath." He was exhausted.
"This is just sad. You need to get in shape." Luna said looking down at her half unconscious "brother".
"…huff… sorry… huff… Luna…" Lincoln reached up for a hand. "C'mon you, get up." Luna said grabbing hold and tugging him up onto his feet like he weighed nothing. Years of lugging around sound equipment had made her plenty strong. Back when she first started out Luna had a roadie named Chunk, but sadly the poor guy had a nasty fall and ended up needing a hip replacement. After that his body just couldn't handle the strain.
"Ok, I-I'm good." He said stabilizing himself.
The woman was an odd mixture of amused and annoyed. "Why were you late anyway? Lincoln's aren't supposed to be late."
"I guess I just lost track of time." 'Staring into the eyes of the most beautiful woman I've ever seen.' He thought. "So why did you want me to meet you here?"
The corners of Luna's mouth lifted as she thumbed up at the sign above their heads.
Lincoln looked up. "Loud's Sound?" He read out loud. "This is your place?" He asked looking back down at her.
"It sure is." A new voice joined in the conversation.
"Ours." The Luna corrected.
"I bought it for you." A woman around Luna's age said walking up to them. She was taller than Luna, but not by much. Her frame was far slimmer and her hair was long and blond, almost bleached, and hung to the small of her back. She wore a plain white shirt, a pair of blue jeans and some black boots.
"So this is the little-little man?" She slipped an arm around Luna's waist. "Guessing by the confused look on your face I should probably introduce myself. "Name's Sam."
"Sam. As in Sam Sharp? Wow. You two are still together?" Lincoln asked looking from the one woman to the other. "Even with the…?"
Luna gave her wife a quick peck on the cheek. "Yeah. She liked it so much she put a ring on it."
"Well a store. Rings are way too mainstream." Sam informed Lincoln. "I wanted to give her a life full of music. And after the accident…" She turned to look at Luna. "This seemed like a good way to do that."
"So you two own this whole store, huh?" Lincoln asked walking to the front entrance.
"Nah, I just man the cash register. I got no interest in being boss. Too much work." Sam answered.
"That's just because you're lazy." Luna said.
"Look who's talking." Sam replied and the two broke out in a chuckled.
"I'd show you the inside, but we've already locked up. Maybe if someone knew how to read a watch this wouldn't be an issue." Luna's mouth set in a hard line. Her expression reminded him a lot of his mother's whenever she got annoyed with them growing up.
Lincoln gave her a lopsided smile and lifts his wrists up. No watch.
Luna turned to look at Sam. "Make a note. "Buy Lincoln a watch"." She informed her wife. "OK, time to get serious. You need to prepare yourself. Tonight's gonna be hard. There are a lot of things we 'all' need to talk about." She made sure to emphasize the word "all".
"All, as in…"
"All of us." She cut him off. The tone of Luna's voice sounded far more somber than Lincoln was used to. "Look Lincoln, I promised I'd be there for you." Luna said placing both her hands on his shoulders. "But let's be real. Our brother is gone." She took an audible gulped. Lincoln could tell see she was trying her best to hold back a flood of emotions. "S-sorry." She said trying to hide her face behind her hands.
"Babe…" Sam ran her hand slowly up and down her wife's back. "…are you OK?"
"I-I'm fine. Sorry." She whispered. Luna had tried her best to keep her feelings about the whole situation hidden from them. When Lynn called to tell her about what happened she kept her cool. But in truth it hadn't really hit her until after she met this version of Lincoln. On her way back to the music store Luna quickly dipped into a nearby bathroom and locked herself in a stall. She curled up and wept like she hadn't in years. Her brother was missing. No, the father of her children was missing.
Luna took a shaky breath. "O-ok. Sorry." Luna Loud does not cry. Luna Loud is strong. And she would continue to stay strong for her family, her wife and most importantly her children.
Luna coughed into her fist in a feeble attempt to cover what had just happened. "As I was saying, this isn't going to be easy. Some hurtful stuff might come out. Things that will hurt all of us. You and us."
Luna was right about one thing. This wasn't going to be easy.
"…well, c'mon. We got a bus to catch." Luna gave a sniffle as she walked past him.
"Bus? Don't you have a car?" Lincoln asked quickly falling in step with the two women.
Luna gave Lincoln her best annoyed mom face. "We normally carpool, but you had to go and be late."
"Carpool?" Riding carpool sounded even less Luna than riding public transport.
Luna pointed to their exit. "We're all about saving the environment, bro."
Sam snorted. "That and gas costs an arm and a leg."
The bus drive home was quiet. They all knew what was waiting for them once they got to the house.
Lincoln sat alone at the back of the mostly empty bus while Luna and Sam sat a couple seats in front of him. He could tell by the way Luna's shoulders went up and down that she was crying. Hey, who of us hasn't cried on public transportation?
He pretended like he didn't notice. He knew Luna didn't want to be seen like this, and he knew they knew he was looking out the other side of the bus as a way to show respect. She might be a Lincoln's sister, but she's Sam's wife. She was Luna's person.
"Yo dude." A raspy voice shook Lincoln from his thoughts. "This is our stop." Luna said making her way to the exit.
Standing up Sam reached over and gave Lincoln's hand a little squeeze. 'Thank you.' She mouthed and followed her Luna out.
"Can you believe this bitch!?" The two heard Luna shout as she ran towards a turquoise coloured sedan next to the sidewalk. "She couldn't have waited for us?" What followed was a bunch of random phrases strung together in such a way that it sounded like she was swearing. The forced British accent didn't make it any easier.
"Don't mind her. She's just venting." Sam said as she and Lincoln calmly made their way towards the "Loud House". "Just so you know. I got your back too." She gave him a little shoulder bump. "We outsiders got to stick together."
He never considered himself an outsider within the Loud family. Not until just this moment.
"You two ready?" A now much calmer Luna asked as the front door swung wide open.
"You're late."
I just wanted to say thank you to all those who have reviewed thus far. I appreciate the feedback.
You might be able to tell, but I struggled getting some of this right. Those in between parts are always the worst.
Take care and stay safe.
