PS 13 – The Brother
"Sakaki…?" said a surprised Yusho under his breath.
"That's impossible," said Leo, "not even Sakaki Yuya is the blood child of Sakaki Yusho."
"In this world no," continued Yuto, "but in my universe, I'm the eldest child of Sakaki Yusho and these are my brothers, Sakaki Yuri and Sakaki Yugo," Yuto signaled to each of his brothers.
"You really think I'll believe that!" shouted Kurosaki.
"I don't care if you believe me or not," said Yuto, "it's the truth. We are brothers and we came from a different universe. A universe which wasn't divided in four dimensions and had all summoning methods since I was a little kid, even pendulum summoning."
Nobody looked convinced.
"There's a simple way to prove it," said Yuri taking out a card from his deck. Yuto and Yugo understood, and they also took out cards from their decks.
Starving Venemy Dragon DARK – Level 7/PS 1 – DRAGON/FUSION/PENDULUM/EFFECT – ATK 2500/DEF 2000
Clear Wing Fast Dragon WIND – Level 7/PS 4 – DRAGON/SYNCHRO/PENDULUM/EFFECT – ATK 2500/DEF 2000
Dark Anthelion Dragon DARK – Rank 7/PS 10 – DRAGON/XYZ/PENDULUM/EFFECT – ATK 3000/DEF 2500
"Those are…?" said Sawatari.
"Pendulum fusion, pendulum synchro and pendulum xyz cards," said Reiji. The others recognized them as the different monsters the brothers used to attack them.
"That card…?" said Rin with complete shock on her face. She knew what the brothers were trying to say because almost two years ago, Yugo had an accident with his motorcycle and after waking up, started talking a lot of nonsense about some brothers, a powerful card that could destroy worlds and another universe.
"You remember Rin?" asked Yugo, "I showed it to you almost two years ago."
"What?!" said Gongenzaka, "That's impossible, pendulum summoning was just created some months ago by Yuya."
"As I said, we are from a universe which had pendulum summoning," said Yuto, "back in our universe, our world was destroyed because of some circumstances and my brothers and I died… or at least we thought we did."
"What do you mean?" asked Kaito.
"After dying, we woke up in the places of the Yuto, Yugo and Yuri of this universe in their respective dimensions," answered Yuri, "we don't know why so don't even ask."
"The accident!" said Ruri looking directly at Yuto, "Your memories were messed up and for almost two weeks you forgot even the simplest of things."
"I didn't forget," said Yuto surprising Ruri, "I'm not that Yuto you knew."
"Wait!" said Kurosaki, "Then, what you're saying is you three are from a different universe, not even a different dimension, a whole other universe… let's say I believe it, I still don't understand what you're trying to do." Kurosaki was angry, there was a big possibility the guy he had been with for the last two years, who fought with him during the invasion was not really his best friend.
"The same thing you have been doing all along, Shun," said Yuto looking at him, then looking at all of the people in the room. "The same thing you all are trying to accomplish by stopping this war… protect the people you care for. When we died, we left our little brother behind in a dangerous situation; we're going to bring him here."
"Little brother…?" said Crow, "You mean…?" Everyone looked behind the brothers to the unconscious person inside the ARC Machine.
"Yuya?" asked Yuzu.
With that Reiji understood everything and what they were trying to do. He just looked with a nervous expression at the form of Yuya. There must be something we can do, he thought.
"Yes," said Yugo, "our Yuya didn't come with us, so we're going to bring him here."
"But why do all of this?" asked Rin.
"She's right," said Serena, "you all seem to know Academia pretty well and have been in this universe since before the war started."
"The war was inevitable," said Yuri, "and one way or another we were going to get involved. We just took advantage of it."
"Took advantage—?" said Kurosaki. "You call attacking our home and turning people into cards an advantage!" He then turned to look at Yuto.
"Did you know about the war since the beginning?" he asked, "Did you help them kidnap Ruri!?"
"How many things did you told them?" asked Kaito, "I always thought the attack to the Clover Branch was too perfect!"
"An Obelisk Force member brought that information to us," said Edo with a thinking face, "and during the fight from before, Yugo was never surprised about the cards used by the students."
"Also, what about all these preparations?" said Sora, "You must have had a lot of time to do all of this!"
"Was mistakenly taking Hiiragi Yuzu to the Synchro Dimension really an accident?" asked Reiji.
"Back in Synchro, there were rumors of people disappearing," said Crow, "someone even saw a hooded figure turn a person into a card. At first, I thought it was Academia, but the timing doesn't add up with the first time they arrived. Was it your doing?!"
"We fought together, Yuto" said a defeated Kurosaki, "you're my best friend. Why?" Ruri and Kaito were looking at the eldest brother with despair all over their faces.
"Yugo! Please tell me everything's not true!" said Rin who had tears in her eyes.
"You taught me to enjoy dueling," said Serena to Yugo, "was all of it a lie too?"
Two brothers couldn't look at their friends. Yuri couldn't start to comprehend how difficult it must be for them. At least, he didn't have to deal with it, maybe the only good thing about starting in the Fusion Dimension when they first appeared. There was nothing in the world that was going to make them stop things now, not when they were so close.
"What about Yuya?" asked with a low voice Yuzu. She was looking down and her bangs covered her eyes. "Was becoming his friend part of your plan? Gain his trust and then do this to him!" She raised her teary-eyed face.
"No!" said Yugo, "We really like this Yuya!"
"Not enough to not kill him, it seems," said Reiji. That caught the attention of everyone.
"We—" started to say Yuto just to be interrupted.
"What's going to happen to Yuya after you fulfill your plan?" asked Reiji, "From what you told us, the original Yuto, Yuri and Yugo of this universe no longer exist. You three don't even have their memories."
"You're going to kill Yuya?!" asked Sawatari. Everyone had different expressions of horror on their faces.
"No!" shouted Yusho. Even if Yuya was not his by blood, he was his son. He wasn't going to let them do it.
"We're doing him a favor!" said Yugo looking a little conflicted, "This Yuya is doomed to turn into a demon, you have already seen it!"
"Yuya will not turn into a demon!" shouted Yuzu.
"Yuya's stronger than that!" shouted Reira surprising everyone. All the people who weren't in the room while the Professor explained the origin of the four dimensions were confused by those last sentences. Yuya turn into a demon?
"It doesn't matter what you all have to say," said Yuri shutting up everyone, "we're going to bring our brother back." Looking at his brothers, he saw the doubt in their faces, but with a look between them, the hesitance banished; they were not going to back down.
Suddenly, a little earthquake shook the room. Everyone let out surprising noises and tried to maintain balance. From behind the large group at the entrance of the Throne Room, the hallway stretched as if in a Mirror House and inside the room, the columns stretched up too.
"What's going on?!" asked Ruri out loud.
"Yugo?" asked Yuto looking at his brother. The synchro duelist went to look at the computer.
"It's working!" he said.
The three brothers turned to look at Yuya, behind him and over the ARC Machine, they saw a tear in space appear. The people outside knew they were running out of time and talking to the brothers wasn't taking them anywhere. They needed to find a way inside to stop them.
"Yugo, continue!" said Yuto.
"Please! You have to stop this!" said Yusho.
In a last desperate attempt, Yuzu tried with the only thing the three brothers had in common in this universe; their love for Yuya.
"Yuya already considers you brothers," she said, "he likes you all… even you, Yuri, who we just recently met. Can you three not learn to love him too?"
It was the right thing to say as the three stopped. Yuzu wasn't lying, Yuto knew as he heard it himself and he was pretty sure his brothers knew it too because they cared for Yuya, even if he wasn't the same one. Yuto already loved this Yuya so his brothers must feel the same, after all, their love for their little brother was one of the things they had in common.
The moment was interrupted by another earthquake, this one stronger than the last. The tear over the machine opened more, making it bigger and suddenly the decks of the three brothers lighted up. Yuto, Yuri and Yugo took out their ace monsters which were the cause of the light. The distortions over space started again with the room stretching itself even more. The tube with Yuya started shining an even brighter green light.
Then everything came abruptly to a halt as if time itself stopped.
In front of everyone an illusion appeared.
A 12-years-old-Yuya was sitting in a couch with a sad expression on his face. Some guys at school had laughed at him because of his magic tricks. From behind him, going down the stairs was a 16-years-old-Yugo.
"What's the matter, Yuya?"
"…nothing," said Yuya without his usual spirit.
After seeing his little brother's expression, he got an idea.
"Hey! Want to go on a ride in my D-Wheel?"
Yuya's expression changed to a little smile with obvious surprise. The D-Wheel was his big brother Yugo's most precious treasure, it was until just recently he got the permit to drive it.
"Really?"
"Yes! C'mon!"
Yuya started to get up and then remembered something.
"What if big brother Yuto or big brother Yuri find out?"
Yugo's face changed to a thinking expression which was quickly replaced with a big smile.
"Then we just have to keep it a secret! Don't worry, we'll not go far, and you have to listen to everything I say."
"Deal! Let's go!"
The image blurred and changed to two people riding a motorcycle. It wasn't going fast because of the little passenger holding out to the driver. You couldn't see their faces because of the helmets, but the laughing sounds they were letting out was a dead giveaway they were enjoying themselves a lot.
"Yuya…" said Yugo remembering everything about that time; the first time he gave a ride to his little brother on his D-Wheel.
The illusion changed again.
You could see a 10-years-old-Yuya walking in some sort of greenhouse because there were a lot of plants everywhere. He was looking for one of his brothers, the only brother who enjoyed plants more than people. At the back of the room was a 14-years-old-Yuri watering flowers. At the sound of steps, he looked behind him preparing to send away the person interrupting his precious time with his babies. When he saw it was a nervous looking Yuya he continued with his activity.
"Do you need something?" asked Yuri.
"Big brother Yuri, I— Can you—"
Yuri let him try for some minutes until he decided to stop his nonsense babbling and turned to look at his brother.
"Yuya, what is it?"
"Canyoupleasehelpmewithmyhomework?" asked really quickly Yuya.
"Try that again?"
"Can you please help me with my homework?" asked Yuya slowly this time.
"Just that? Yeah, sure" said Yuri, "let me finish this and I'll help you."
"Really?"
"Why the surprise?"
"I heard you got into a fight with big brother Yugo and when you come here, you don't like anyone bothering you," said Yuya.
"No, I don't like Yuto or Yugo coming here; Yugo doesn't stop talking and Yuto always manages to shove my plants to the ground. You would think with how athletic he is, it wouldn't happen."
"Oh…"
"As I said, let me finish and I'll help you," said Yuri. He returned to his watering but Yuya didn't leave. Suddenly, Yuri was surprised by a hug from the side from his little brother.
"Thanks a lot, big brother Yuri!"
"Yeah, whatever," said Yuri with a little blush on his face. Sometimes Yuya could get excited by the most normal things.
"Let me help you!" said Yuya unexpectedly, "That way you'll help me, and I'll help you!" He went to find a second watering can.
Yuri just looked fondly at the back of his baby brother.
"You were always too soft, Yuya," said Yuri under his breath with a soft smile on his face.
The illusion changed once again.
Outside the house in the garden were an 8-years-old Yuya and a 12-years-old Yuto. Yuya was sitting under a tree crying and Yuto was kneeling over him putting a band-aid over a little cut in his knee.
"Yuya, everything's fine," said Yuto, "Look! There's no more blood."
The little child stopped his crying and looked at his knee.
"You need to be more careful," said Yuto giving his brother a pad on the head, "just because you see Yugo climbing a tree doesn't mean you can do it too."
"…I'm sorry," said Yuya with a little voice.
"No need to apologize, just be careful next time or better yet, if you want to try it ask one of us and we can help you."
Yuya gave him a big smile and throwed himself at Yuto for a hug.
"Thanks, Big brother! You're the best!"
Yuto smiled at the illusion. He and his brothers had always looked out for Yuya since they were kids. Even in their last moments, all they did was protect him and now, all they have done was to save him.
The three cards from the brothers lighted up once more to show them one last memory.
This time all brothers were in a living room playing cards on the floor. The brothers were 15 years old and Yuya was 11. It wasn't a duel because even though Yuya was sitting by one side of the board, the other side was empty, and no one had cards in their hands. Yuya was blindfolded and Yuto, Yuri and Yugo were standing around him.
"Are you ready, Yuya?" asked an excited Yugo.
The real Yugo laughed at the memory and the other two were giving fond smiles at the scene.
"This is how we taught Yuya how to duel," said Yuri.
"It was a really fun game," said Yuto.
Yuya gave a determined nod.
"I'm ready!"
"Remember," said Yuto, "Create a situation—"
"Create a situation," said the real Yuto at the same time.
"That's as complicated as possible—"
"That's as complicated as possible," said Yuri with his illusion.
"And then solve it!" finished Yugo by taking off the blindfold from Yuya.
"And then solve it!" said Yugo.
Everyone else except the brothers were really surprised about the illusions. They understood those must had been the memories of them as a family, meaning everything Yuto, Yuri and Yugo said was true. The brothers exchanged looks between them and the decision was made, they were no longer going to hesitate, they'll save their brother Yuya. The fact those illusions appeared must mean they were closer to their goal.
Outside the room, Sora and Rin were trying to make their duel disks work as there was no panel to control the entrance. The others were pushing the bars to force their way in with no success whatsoever, while inside, Yusho, Reira and Yuzu were shouting at the brothers to stop. Reiji was also trying to make his duel disk work when another earthquake suddenly occurred, this time bringing with it wind and more disturbances in space. The green light coming from the ARC Machine was really bright, almost blinding everyone. Yuto, Yuri and Yugo went closer to the unconscious Yuya and brought up their ace monsters which were shining as much as the machine.
"Yuya!" shouted the three brothers.
The light shined even more… then, the machine exploded.
The Throne Room was completely destroyed, the columns had fallen down and on the floor there were parts of the walls and glass from behind where the throne used to be. It was going to be a miracle everyone had survived. The first one to recover conscious was Yuto, looking at his sides to find his brothers there. Noticing they were breathing he looked up to find the container with Yuya in the floor a few meters from his location.
"Yuya!" he shouted. That woke up Yugo and Yuri who raised up to follow their older brother. Arriving first, Yuto took out debris from over the tube and took out Yuya into his arms.
"Is he okay?" asked Yuri.
Yuto checked for a pulse.
"He's alive," he said.
"Is he… is he our Yuya?" asked Yugo with hesitance.
"I don't know," said Yuto.
"Check his deck!" said Yuri with urgency. From the other side of the room, he heard groans from people waking up. Yugo took Yuya's deck and did a quick search for one particular monster.
"It's here!" said Yugo with excitement in his voice and a big smile on his face. He showed his brothers what he found.
Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon DARK – Level 7/PS 4 – DRAGON/PENDULUM/EFFECT – ATK 2500/DEF 2000
"He's really here…" said Yuri looking at Yuya whose expression changed to a grimace and slowly opened his eyes.
"Yuya!" shouted the three brothers.
"Are you okay?" asked Yuto who was the closest to him.
"Do you recognize us?" asked Yuri.
"…Big brother…?" Yuya was still pretty out of it and fell asleep again.
"That's enough for me," said Yugo, "we need to get out of here!"
Some of the others in the room were already awake. Yugo made eye contact with Kurosaki, Yuzu, Rin and Reiji who were looking out for them.
"Over here!" shouted Yuzu.
"Shit! We needed to leave like yesterday!" shouted Yugo.
"Yuri, take Yuya!" said Yuto who passed the sleeping brother to the second eldest brother, "I'll distract them. Yugo, a way out, now!"
"With pleasure!" said Yugo, "Come forth, Clear Wing!"
From the corner of his eye, Yuto caught a glimpse of the dragon materializing just as he saw everyone else appear from behind a broken column.
"Stop!" shouted Reiji.
"Yuto! You don't have to do this!" said Ruri.
Yuto looked at all of them. The friends he made from all the different dimensions and his gaze stopped at Yuzu. Looking directly at her, he said:
"I'm sorry… for everything," his face turned determined, "I summon Dark Anthelion Dragon!"
The wonderful dragon materialized in front of them and without duel disks there was no way to fight it.
"Keep them busy!" said Yuto.
He was going to run back to his brothers when another dragon appeared over everyone's head.
"Yuto!" shouted Yuri from Clear Wing Fast Dragon, "Catch!"
He throwed his whip at his brother who caught it, getting over Clear Wing.
"No!" said Yuzu with tears in her eyes, "Please come back!"
Clear Wing flew higher and higher, through a hole in the ceiling until it was no longer visible in the sky.
The brothers never looked back.
Author notes
Spoiler* AnimeYuya is gone. The major character death is also for him.
It was always going to be like this. Sorry if anyone wanted a different outcome. This is what happens when you read the manga and want the brothers to be happy and for them to experience the anime universe.
AnimeYuya was a good guy, they liked him and they could create new memories with him... but he was not their brother. That scene in the manga when Yuya remembers them playing together? My heart melt with happiness!
MangaYuya was also probably in danger after going to face G.O.D. makers, remember the dream of the first chapter?
For those who don't read the manga, it ends with Yuya, Reiji and two manga characters going to face the creators of the powerful card Genesis Omega Dragon G.O.D. How does it go? Who knows, for this story my interpetation is it ended bad xD
Why does Yuya have Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon when he gave it to Yuzu at the end of the manga? I need him to have it. However, it wasn't the only card he came with.
And for those who wondered if they were going to use their pendulum monsters... they did :D
Thanks for reading!
