Lena had warned Kara that it was going to rain. She had reminded her, twice, to pack an umbrella. Now she watched her girlfriend running towards the car, cardigan held uselessly over her head, as the sky emptied above them.
They were in Ireland. Lena wanted to trace her family history, try and learn more about where she had come from, and so Kara had come with her. Online research could only give her so much information. After making their way up the country, they'd started in Cork, they were currently stopped in a small village so that Lena could look through the church records and visit the graves she had matched to her family tree. They'd stopped for lunch at Molly's, a popular restaurant in a nearby town with its low prices and generous portion sizes. The owners were very friendly and offered advice on the local area, including the best bakery for a mid-afternoon snack at the next town on their list, which was why Kara was currently outside of the car while Lena was waiting for her.
"Oh my goodness, I can't believe it," Kara told her as she got into the car, water dripping off her onto the rental car's seats.
"I did warn you."
"But the sky was so blue a moment ago and the forecast..."
"It's Ireland, Kara."
"Well I'm sure it won't last long. At least I got the cakes," she pulled the paper bag out of her handbag and pushed wet strands of hair from her face, "oh."
The paper bag was a little damp where she hadn't closed her handbag properly. Kara frowned, disappointed as she looked inside.
"They're a little wet."
"What did you get?"
"Scone for you, that's probably all right, but my cream cake..." she pulled it out to show Lena.
"You can share mine, or" Lena reached behind her, onto the back seat, "you can borrow my coat and go back Though we really should get you to the hotel and out of those wet clothes."
"I won't catch a cold," Kara reminded her.
"But it can't be comfortable in them."
"True," Kara looked out of the window, "but the bakery isn't far and the cakes did smell so lovely..."
Lena rolled her eyes affectionately, "fine, go. Quickly."
Kara opened the door without taking the coat, so Lena passed it to her before she could get out.
Later that afternoon, as they went for a walk through some castle ruins near their hotel, it began to rain again. This time Lena had brought an umbrella, large enough to cover them both, and they huddled together underneath as they continued their walk.
"It's strange to imagine my ancestors once walked around the same places we're now walking," Lena told Kara.
"I wonder if it was a quiet then as it is now."
"Maybe."
"Your ancestors were probably sensible enough to bring umbrella's out with them for when it was raining too. "
Lena laughed, "I think it's stopping now. Would you like to keep walking or head back?"
They'd only agreed to walk around the ruins, but there was still some time before dinner to explore a little more.
"Oh look, there's a rainbow!" Kara pointed past the ruins. "We should follow it and find the end."
"I don't think I need any gold," Lena teased her.
"No, but we might find a leprechaun."
"With my magic and your abilities we'd be able to catch one and get three wishes."
"Oh I'm not worried about that, I just made a bet with Alex that they exist and are probably aliens who landed here ages ago, she bet me that they don't exist at all."
Lena laughed, "well, if you made a bet with Alex..."
"Come on," Kara grabbed her hand, "this way."
As they ran, Lena wondered whether her ancestors had ever been lucky enough to find the kind of love she had with Kara, and if they too had run through these fields chasing a rainbow.
