Chapter 1: A Duel Between Cool Dudes?
Maguro and Yuya woke up for the day ahead of them, and Yoko made breakfast for them and herself. From there, Yuya started up a conversation…
Yuya: "Maguro, I'm going to prep school today, so you won't see me until this afternoon."
Maguro: "Is that so? Well, I guess it would make sense for you to go to normal school as well…"
Yuya: "Yeah, but it's boring… Definitely not exciting like action duels are."
Maguro: "Eh, it's not so bad. Back home where I once lived: I would go to school with this girl, and she was passionate about math and science. At the same time though, she loved to experience exciting stuff. I'm sure that if you devote some time to school stuff, you'll find a healthy balance, Yuya."
Yuya: "... Devote some time, huh?"
Maguro: "Yeah."
Yoko: "Maguro, I always tell Yuya to do his best at school… but he has a lot of trouble learning and usually ends up falling asleep. That's what I mostly hear from Zuzu, his friend."
Maguro: "Err, well… I guess it can't be helped if even your mom can't motivate you to pay attention in class."
Maguro scratched his head briefly, then ate some more of his food. After that, Yuya spoke up again.
Yuya: "Hey, Maguro?"
Maguro: "Yeah, Yuya?"
Yuya: "Who's this girl you mentioned?"
Maguro: "... Her name's Ringo. Believe it or not, she was a childhood friend of mine. I've known her since we were little kids… We were both a part of separate families that ran stores in a market from my city. My family ran a fish shop… and her family ran a fresh produce shop. So that's how I came to know Ringo. Heh. It's funny, really… Me and her were so similar, yet so different. She was always eager to get things done. And meanwhile, I was calm, cool, and collected most of the time. That might sound as though me and her didn't get along, but we did. We enjoyed being with each other and we became best friends after a while."
Yuya: "... Don't you miss her, though?"
Maguro: "Yeah, I do... And you wanna know something? She's in the same situation as me right now."
Yuya: "R-really?"
Maguro: "Yep. Anyway, it'll be great if I can find Ringo… She's someone that others can count on to get any job done."
Yuya: "Well, gee… I hope I get to meet her at some point."
Maguro: "I hope so too, Yuya. Though, something tells me that I'll see her at some point in the near future."
Maguro smiled and Yuya did the same… And then, the latter looked at the time.
Yuya: "...! Oh no! I have to hurry and leave for prep school!"
Yuya quickly ate through the rest of his food and got up from his seat.
Yuya: "I'll see you later, Maguro!"
Yuya then grabbed his backpack and left through the front door.
Maguro: "Will he get to school just fine, Yoko?"
Yoko: "Oh, I wouldn't worry about that. Yuya somehow always manages to arrive on time."
Maguro: "Hmm… Well then…"
Yoko: "Anyway… Could you tell me more about your situation and how you ended up here?"
Maguro: "... All right, but you might not believe me."
Maguro told Yoko about the situation that he, Amitie, Lidelle, Draco, and a bunch of their friends were all in. Yoko stayed silent for a bit, then spoke.
Yoko: "That does sound hard to believe… You weren't kidding, Maguro. … If you can bring those three girls you spoke of over here at some point, and allow me to see them… I might have a reason to believe you."
Maguro: "Can't I just bring them here as soon as possible?"
Yoko: "If you go out into the city right now, people will think that you're a student going to school. After all, you're kind of wearing a uniform of sorts right now…"
Maguro: "But I'm not a student of a school in this city…"
Yoko: "Right, and I don't want you to get dragged into a school by the Paradise City police if you end up in the city and don't go. So, you'll have to stay here and not go outside until the school day is done."
Maguro: "Okay! … In that case, I'll just go back to Yuya's room. After all, I have a deck to take a closer look at."
Yoko: "Enjoy your stay here, Maguro."
Maguro: "I will."
Maguro went up to Yuya's room and took a closer look at his own deck. Meanwhile, Amitie and the other girls were staying at Zuzu's place… and Zuzu herself left for prep school. When the school day came and went, Maguro was finally able to go outside and find the girls, with his deck and duel disk pocketed away on his person. It took a while, but he found them walking around. He waved to them, and they saw him as he walked over to them.
Maguro: "We're gonna have to find a way to meet up without having other people see us…"
Draco: "You can say that again… I hated sitting around and not doin' much of anything."
As Maguro and Draco were talking to each other, Amitie saw something… or rather, two familiar faces.
Amitie: "Hm? … Hey, I think I see Yuya and Zuzu!"
Maguro: "Huh? … Hey, there they are! Yuya! Over here!"
Maguro got Yuya's attention, and everyone met up from there. Notably, Zuzu looked annoyed and gave Yuya a constant glare. Maguro noticed this as he asked…
Maguro: "So, uh… how was prep school today, Yuya?"
Yuya: "U-um…"
Zuzu: "Ugh… Yuya was sleeping in class and acted like an idiot. This happens almost every school day…"
Maguro: "Aw, c'mon Zuzu, it can't be helped. He talked to me about his disinterest with prep school this morning before he left."
Zuzu: "H-he did?"
Maguro: "Yeah. So don't be so tough on him... I wanna think that it's just how he is a person."
Zuzu: "*sigh* But still… Yuya should really focus on school in one way or another."
Amitie, Lidelle, and Maguro: "..."
Amitie, Lidelle, and Maguro all stood there in silence at that moment. They knew how boring school could be, but at the same time… they understood Zuzu's frustration with Yuya not taking things seriously at prep school. As they kids all stood there, though… three small suction cup arrows came flying into Yuya's face.
Yuya: "Huh?"
Zuzu: " Wow... Triple bull's-eye."
Amitie: "Where the heck did those come from?"
Everyone then looked around the area to see where they came from. At that point, a boy around Yuya's age came up to the group… and he appeared to have a suave look to him.
?: "Are you impressed with my shot? I assure you, that was mere child's play. In fact, I could have done it blind-folded."
Yuya: "Uh, who are you?"
?: "Me? I'm merely one of your biggest fans, Yuya."
Yuya: "Wait, you know me?"
?: "Of course. How could I not? I caught your duel against the Sledgehammer on TV. It looked so engaging… so exciting, even."
Amitie, Lidelle, Maguro, and Draco: "Huh…?"
Zuzu: "As nice as that was for you to say… that didn't exactly answer Yuya's question."
?: "Ah, my apologies… … The name's Sylvio. It's an honor to meet you in person, Yuya."
Yuya: "Oh, hi."
Sylvio: "Anyway, allow me to take those off your face."
Sylvio then took the suction cup arrows off Yuya's face, leaving behind three noticeable marks. And after doing that, Sylvio continued to speak.
Sylvio: "Your new Pendulum Summoning technique took my breath away. And those cards you used… Sorry, what do you call them, Yuya?"
When Sylvio mentioned that Yuya's Pendulum Summon technique was something new, it made Maguro think a little bit in his mind.
Maguro: (Huh? New...? What does he mean by that?)
Yuya: "You mean, my Pendulum cards?"
Sylvio: "Precisely… I'd be interested in learning how you acquired them. See, only a duelist of the highest caliber could possibly possess such rare cards."
As Sylvio said that, Zuzu was annoyed with the way he used his words.
Zuzu: "There's no need to pump his ego, it's already about to burst as it is."
Sylvio merely ignored what Zuzu said, and spoke to Yuya some more.
Sylvio: "Seriously, you're a sensational duelist, Yuya. If you want to demonstrate your Pendulum technique to the world, then I have access to a most ideal venue. An hour from now, you could showcase your talents at the Leo Institute. You'll take center stage on their center court. Doesn't that sound exciting to you?"
Yuya: "*gasp* But I thought that was for Leo students only…"
Zuzu: "He can't duel there!"
Sylvio: "For Leo students only? Oh, don't be silly... I was able to reserve the space, since I happen to be one of Leo Institute's top students."
Sylvio flashed a badge that was on his collar to show that and continued to speak.
Sylvio: "My father is also expected to be Paradise City's next mayor, so I definitely have influence with the school's higher-ups."
As Sylvio said that, he turned his back to the group and pointed a finger upward. This got Amitie and Draco excited.
Amitie: "*excited gasp* That sounds amazing! I wanna see Yuya duel there!"
Draco: "Me too!"
Amitie and Draco: "Can we come, too? We're Yuya's friends."
Sylvio: "Why, certainly."
Sylvio smiled and Zuzu was becoming increasingly annoyed by him.
Zuzu: "*growl* I don't see why Yuya can't just do his demo at our duel school…"
As Zuzu said that, Maguro looked at Sylvio closely.
Maguro: "Hmm…"
Lidelle: "H-huh? Maguro, what is it?"
Maguro: "Hm? Oh. It's nothing, Lidelle."
But Maguro's mind thought otherwise…
Maguro: (Why do I get a feeling that something's up with this Sylvio fellow? I mean, he seems to be a cool guy and all, but… … Maybe it's just me.)
As Maguro spoke in his mind, Amitie and Draco were begging Zuzu to let Yuya and them go with Sylvio.
Amitie and Draco: "Pleeeease?"
Zuzu: "Urgh... Fine, but I'm coming along, too. As a loyal student of the You Show, I think I should check out our top competitor."
Amitie and Draco: "All right!"
Sylvio: "You're all more than welcome to join us. And now… au revoir!"
Amitie and Draco then grabbed Yuya by the arms with smiles, and everyone began to follow Sylvio to the Leo Institute. As they did, Sylvio smirked and said in his mind…
Sylvio: (Good… It's all going according to plan.)
Once everyone arrived at the Leo Institute, Sylvio welcomed the group to the place as they went inside.
Sylvio: "On behalf of my fellow students… welcome to the Leo Institute of Dueling."
Amitie was then impressed with the look of the place, and Maguro was as well.
Maguro: "I gotta admit, Sylvio… this is impressive."
Sylvio: "Why, of course it is… Leo Institute is the top duel school in the city, after all. Now, continue to follow me as I tell you all a bit more about this place."
The group continued to walk together and Sylvio began telling the group the know-how of Leo Institute.
Sylvio: "As you might know, the Leo Institute is managed by the Leo Corporation… They've spared no expense to turn our school into one of the world's top dueling institutions. And yes, we have only the best. You know… Our faculty says that if you want to achieve excellence... you must surround yourself with excellence."
Maguro: "From what I've seen with You Show Duel School so far, it seems to be kinda like that."
Sylvio: "Ah, yes… I've heard that You Show is an okay school."
Zuzu: "*growl* I guess your school's just better at everything…"
As Zuzu said that, Yuya accidentally separated himself from the rest of the group and looked at a flyer.
Yuya: "Hmm… I have to admit, this place has a lot of things that our school can't offer. Their classes are unbelievable… You can learn Xyz Summoning, Synchro Summoning… Woah! They even teach Fusion Summoning!"
As Yuya looked at the flyer, a boy with light blue hair walked past him. The boy in question had a lollipop in his right hand, and he briefly faced Yuya as the latter spoke of Fusion Summoning. Then, the boy walked away… and Yuya saw him as he did. After that, a hushed voice called on Yuya's name; it was Zuzu.
Zuzu: "Yuya!"
This got Yuya's attention, and turned to where he heard Zuzu's voice. Once he saw her and the others, he noticed that Zuzu had a look of annoyance. Amitie and co. were looking at him too, but their faces had more of a look of confusion to them. And then, Sylvio spoke once more.
Sylvio: "The central dueling zone is right this way."
After saying that, he led them all to the area he mentioned and Amitie and co. were impressed as a whole.
Amitie: "Wow…! Look at this… This is incredible!"
Draco: "The size of this duel arena is awesome!"
Maguro: "I have to agree; this place is really cool."
At that point, three other students from Leo went up to the group and Sylvio talked to Yuya again.
Sylvio: "Ah, these gents here have also become big fans of yours. They're curious about the cards you use to Pendulum Summon. You wouldn't mind letting them have a look, would you?"
Yuya: "Show them… my cards?"
Sylvio: "No need to worry, they're best buds with me."
Yuya: "W-well… okay."
Yuya then took out Timegazer Magician and Stargazer Magician to show Sylvio and his three pals.
Yuya: "Here they- Ah!"
Sylvio's buddy grabbed a hold of them with awe and they couldn't believe what they were looking at. And then, Sylvio took them back and said…
Sylvio: "Gentleman, please. You can't have these Pendulum cards; they aren't yours. Because… they're mine. I'm adding them to my rare card collection."
As soon as Sylvio said that, Maguro reacted in a strange way.
Maguro: "...?!"
When the others heard Maguro utter that out, they realized what was going on.
Yuya: "Huh?!"
Amitie, Lidelle, and Draco: "What?!"
Zuzu: "That's not funny, Sylvio; give them back."
Sylvio: "Give them back? Oh, I don't think so. Once I set my sights on cards as rare as these Pendulum cards… there's no giving back. Yuya, your cards are so unique… I simply couldn't resist taking them."
As Sylvio said that, she had a menacing grin on his face and his buddies laughed.
Zuzu: "Oh, so that's why you invited Yuya to your school!"
Sylvio: "Heh. That wasn't the only reason. Naturally, I need to learn how to use these cards. You still want Yuya to showcase his Pendulum Summon, right guys?"
Sylvio's Buddies: "Yeah."
Sylvio: "That's why I reserved this place for a showdown."
When Sylvio said that, he placed a duel disk on his left arm.
Yuya: "Well, you're gonna have to call and cancel."
Sylvio: "Excuse me? After I went to all this trouble?"
Sylvio then went up to Yuya and tugged on his goggles, which were strapped to his head.
Sylvio: "You better snap to it."
Sylvio let go of Yuya's goggles and the latter was knocked to the floor.
Yuya: "Oof-!"
Amitie: "Y-Yuya! Are you okay?"
Amitie came up to him out of concern and kneeled down to the floor.
Yuya: "Ugh… Yeah, I'll be fine, Amitie…"
Amitie then looked at Sylvio with a pouty face and said...
Amitie: "Why the heck did you do that?! You didn't have to knock Yuya to the floor."
Sylvio: "Hmm… Amitie, was it? You don't seem to understand the value of rare cards… Anyway, I don't want things to get rough here, so Yuya: I suggest you get your head in the game and your deck in order."
As Sylvio said this, a beeping made itself known to him and a man's voice came from his duel disk.
?: "Dueling wasn't a part of the plan. You were ordered to retrieve these cards and bring them to us immediately."
Sylvio: "Heh. That was YOUR plan… but my priorities are a little different, understand? I plan to keep these rare cards for myself."
On the other end of the communication line, the man spoke to Sylvio.
?: "Do not try to defy us! Report here immediately with the-"
The man was then cut off by Declan, who appeared behind him.
Declan: "No, let him be."
?: "M-Mr. President…"
Declan: "I'll make this clear for you: Do not interfere with Sylvio."
At that point, the communication ended and Sylvio spoke to the group in front of him.
Sylvio: "Now, let's get on with it."
Sylvio snapped his fingers and his buddies each grabbed a hold of the girls; all of them. The first one held on to Zuzu, the second held on to Amite and Lidelle, and the third one held on to Draco.
Zuzu: "Aaah!"
Amitie: "H-hey, let us go!"
Lidelle: "Kyah-!"
Draco: "...! Get your hands off me, bub!"
Yuya: "...! Sylvio! Tell them to let Zuzu and the other girls go!"
Sylvio: "Your friends are perfectly safe… at least until our duel gets underway."
Yuya: "What do you mean?"
Sylvio: "You'll see… By the way, I have something for you."
Sylvio tossed a deck of cards to the floor, next to Yuya's feet and continued speaking.
Sylvio: "I'm offering these in exchange for your Pendulum cards. I knew you would like them, because they're worthless, like you! Ahahahahahaha!"
Yuya was shocked by this as he looked at the cards he was given. As one would expect, these cards were AWFUL… like, a lot worse than even the decks that were offered at the You Show Duel School.
Yuya: "Th-this isn't fair…"
Yuya picked the cards up in devastation, but then… Maguro walked up to where Yuya was and got Sylvio's attention.
Maguro: "You seemed to have forgotten someone when you grabbed my friends there, Sylvio…"
Sylvio: "Heh. And who you are you supposed to be? Some knight in shining armor? Don't make me laugh… You're just as worthless as the rest of your friends."
Maguro: "Hey, can you just shut up about that? Nothing is worthless. And you better believe that no one is useless. My name's Maguro Sasaki, and it looks like you failed to see what I have pocketed here."
Maguro took out his deck and duel disk, and showed them to Sylvio as he placed the latter on his left arm.
Maguro: "I have a deck, too; it's from You Show… And I can assure you, it's not worthless. So here's what I want: You and I are gonna duel. If I win, then you have to give Yuya's Pendulum cards back."
Yuya: "H-huh?! Maguro, what are you doing?!"
Maguro: "What does it look like I'm doing, Yuya? I wanna get back those cards for you. I'm not gonna just leave a friend of mine hanging, especially when another person screws them over. Also, this guy's pals are holding Amitie and the others hostage. I have every right to do this…"
And then… Maguro stepped up to Sylvio.
Maguro: "Sylvio. I knew there was something off about you when you were showcasing that suaveness. To me, it felt artificial… And I would know, because I've lived as a cool guy for years. I know actual coolness when I see it, and yours didn't seem right to me. And when you said that those Pendulum cards were yours, I knew that you had this whole thing set up just to take them from Yuya. That's not cool, man; you're lame. And so, I've decided that I want to duel you, here and now, in Yuya's stead."
Sylvio: "Hmph. Fine. I'll let you duel me, Maguro."
Maguro: "And if you think I'll use those cards that Yuya has in his hands, then you're sorely mistaken. I'll use my own deck to beat you."
Sylvio: "Heh. It doesn't matter… You said a little bit ago that your deck was from You Show. With the deck that I have here, along with these Pendulum cards... there's no way you can possibly win!"
Maguro: "We'll see about that. Let's get it on!"
Sylvio: "As you wish."
As Sylvio said that: Declan and the man, who were both watching things unfold from a large computer, spoke to each other for a bit.
?: "Are you sure about this, sir?"
Declan: "I am. Allow Sylvio to proceed as he wants."
And back at the dueling zone, Sylvio pointed upward and said…
Sylvio: "Now, I'll select an action field."
Maguro: "Wait, action field?"
Sylvio: "What? Have you not participated in an action duel before? One of us picks an action field for both of us. And then, action cards will be spread out across the field. This is another reason why I picked this place to be the grounds for the duel. Though, I wasn't expecting to duel you… I was planning on dueling Yuya, after all."
Maguro: "Hmm… So that's how action cards appear on the field… … All right, get ready to lose big time, Sylvio!"
Sylvio: "Oh, I highly doubt it. Let's hope your friends and Yuya aren't scared of heights, because my choice of field will take them all sky high! I choose… Prison Tower of Darkville!"
Female Computer Voice: "Augmented reality combat system energized. Generating action field."
After Sylvio said that, the ARC system began to materialize the action field and Maguro was stunned. The girls, though… they began to scream as the field took shape and brought them high into the air.
Amitie, Lidelle, Draco, and Zuzu: "Aaaaaaaaah!"
Yuya ran away from the rising field and exclaimed something as he watched from below.
Yuya: "Zuzu, Amitie, Lidelle, Draco!"
And then, all focus was placed on Sylvio as he spoke to Maguro.
Sylvio: "It would be a terrible waste to have a prison tower with prisoners, don't you think?"
Maguro: "Oh, that's so not cool, man. …!"
Amitie: "Maguro, save us!"
Maguro saw the girls and began hoping over rooftops to get to them. However, he and the girls were soon separated as the tower that held the four girls rose up even higher.
Maguro: "Ah-! Don't worry, I'll get you all down soon!"
The girls then looked at each other as they rose high into the air.
Lidelle: "N-none of this is real, right?"
Draco: "I dunno, this feels pretty real to me… Ugh, if only I wasn't being held on by THIS jerk. I could safely take you all back to the ground…"
Amitie: "Oooh, I think I'm gonna be sick from how high we're going up…"
As Amitie said that, the tower stopped rising. And as it turned out, the tower was at the very middle of a suspension bridge. Maguro saw this, and started rushing toward it. But it didn't take long before he was stopped by Sylvio.
Sylvio: "Hey now… Don't tell me you've already forgotten what you told me you would do."
Maguro: "I just wanted to save them first… But fine, if you want me to duel you so badly…! …then I'll do so."
Maguro activated his duel disk, and Sylvio did the same.
Maguro and Sylvio: "Let's duel!"
As they both exclaimed that, action cards appeared and floated around in the middle of the action field. And then...
Female Computer Voice: "Action cards dispersed."

Maguro: "It's time to take off! I'll go first! I draw!"
Maguro began to run and he quickly looked at the options he had in his hand.
Maguro: "... I summon Blue Thunder T-45 in attack mode! … I wonder… Ha!"
Maguro jumped on top of Blue Thunder T-45 and he felt the metal exterior of the spaceship.
Maguro: "...! Nice! Alright, Blue Thunder: Take me to the girls!"
Blue Thunder took off with Maguro and they were flying through the air.
Maguro: "Next, I set this card face-down and end my turn. Your move, Sylvio."
Sylvio looked at the flying spaceship and scoffed as his turn came around.
Maguro's LP: 4000 - Sylvio's LP: 4000
Maguro's Hand Size Before DP: 4 - Sylvio's Hand Size Before DP: 5
Sylvio: "You better fly away like an insect, twerp. I draw!"
After Sylvio drew his card for the turn, he looked at his hand. As it turned out, he already had Stargazer Magician ready to go. Sylvio smiled from this as he said…
Sylvio: "Excellent."
But when Sylvio was about to play Stargazer Magician, Declan's voice came from his duel disk.
Declan: "No. It's not time to use that card yet."
Sylvio: "Listen, I don't know who you are, but don't interfere!"
Declan: "You WILL obey me."
As Declan said that, Sylvio felt intimidated by that young man's words for a bit before calming himself.
Sylvio: "It doesn't matter… I'll save this monster for the final blow. So instead, I'll pick… something to give me a lift. Lightning Hoverboard!"
Sylvio summoned the hoverboard, which had 1400 attack points and got on it to chase Maguro down.
Sylvio: "You aren't going to save your friends as long as I'm chasing you like this, Maguro. In fact, you'll only get them into deeper danger."
Maguro: "I'm gonna try anyway, Sylvio! Blue Thunder, speed up!"
Blue Thunder began to fly faster and Sylvio was quick to act as he saw an action card nearby.
Sylvio: "I don't think so! … Ha! Got it! I play the action spell: Nanana! I choose one monster I control and it gains 700 attack points for the duration of this turn. I'll choose Lightning Hoverboard, and now it's stronger than your Blue Thunder T-45. Lightning Hoverboard, attack Blue Thunder now!"
Lightning Hoverboard's attack points went up to 2100 and it shot lightning at the ship. Maguro had to act fast if he didn't want his ship to be destroyed.
Maguro: "...! Crap, where's an action card? … …! I think that's one right there! Blue Thunder, take me to that card!"
Maguro lowered himself to the bridge and he jumped off his ship to safety. And then, he picked the card to look at it. However, he was in for a surprise.
Maguro: "...?! What the heck is this?!"
Sylvio saw Maguro's bit of misfortune and smiled at it.
Sylvio: "Oh, how unfortunate for you… You've triggered a trap: Jump Shot! That trap weakens your monster by 400 attack points by shooting a giant pool ball at it!"
Blue Thunder T-45's attack was reduced to 1300 as it took a blow from the pool ball.
Sylvio: "And now…! Lightning Hoverboard, fry that ship's circuits!
Lightning Hoverboard's attack then landed on the ship.
Maguro: "Ack-! Blue Thunder...!"
Blue Thunder then caught on fire and it fell to the water below, where it proceeded to explode. This caused Maguro to lose quite a few life points as he shielded himself with his arms.
Sylvio: "Tsk. Tsk. Tsk. Blindly picking up that action card was a newbie mistake. Whenever you pick up an action card, there's always an element of risk involved. And that's not the end of your troubles, Maguro. Look at where that giant pool ball is heading towards."
Maguro: "...? …! Oh no!"
Maguro saw where the pool ball was headed and he panicked. The ball was about to hit the tower, where the girls were at. Maguro wanted to do something to stop it, but he knew that he couldn't; it was going too fast. It then smacked into the tower, and to the girls, it felt like the whole thing was about to fall. One of Sylvio's pals took Draco, and brought her to the edge.
Sylvio's Buddy: "Time for you to go down, cosplayer!"
Draco: "Wh-what the heck is a-"
Before Draco could finish her question, that guy threw Draco off the tower.
Draco: "Aaaaaaah!"
Amitie: "Draco!"
Lidelle: "B-Big Sister!"
After that guy threw Draco off, Sylvio's other pals released the rest of the girls and one of them said…
Sylvio's Buddy: "Time for us to split, boys!"
The three buddies nodded to each other and jumped off the tower to safety. This left Amitie, Lidelle, and Zuzu trapped on the weak tower. One more strong impact, and the entire tower would go down; Maguro couldn't let that happen. The girls screamed again and this slightly annoyed Sylvio.
Sylvio: "I should take those whiny girls down, but not yet… That tower will stand until I'm able to deal the final blow with a Pendulum Summon."
Meanwhile, Draco was falling down to the water below and she couldn't stop her descent in time.
Draco: "Aaaaaaaaaah!"
She landed in the water and couldn't swim her way out of it. She was barely able to keep herself afloat, let alone swim. Her body wasn't designed for swimming, considering that she had wings. And since her wings were wet, they were heavy and couldn't lift her body out of the water. So, she was stuck there… Meanwhile, Maguro looked up at the tower and called out to the girls.
Maguro: "Girls, are you all right?"
Zuzu: "We're hanging on tight, but I don't know how long we'll last up here!"
Maguro: "Okay, just hang in there until I can save you!"
Amitie: "Maguro! One of Sylvio's buddies threw Draco off the tower before all three of them decided to leave us up here!"
Maguro: "What?! Where is she?"
Amitie: "... Ah-! It looks like she ended up in the water, and she can't swim out of it!"
Maguro: "...?!"
And then, Sylvio came up to Maguro with his Lightning Hoverboard and jumped down to where he was.
Sylvio: "I don't mean to be rude, but we still have a duel on our hands; that comes first in my opinion. Hey, maybe if you're fast enough, you can save your friends in time. Until then, I end my turn... and Lightning Hoverboard's attack points return to normal. Your move."

Maguro: "... Sylvio, I'll save them soon. I draw! … I summon Submarineroid in attack mode!"
Maguro summoned the goofy-looking submarine and jumped to its hatch.
Maguro: "Hup-! Submarineroid! Take me to the water and make your way to the base of the tower!"
Maguro closed the hatch, and Submarineroid submerged in the water.
Sylvio: "What…? Rgh! I can't let him get to that base! Problem is… it's not my turn anymore, so I can't attack that submarine of his."
About thirty seconds later, Submarineroid emerged from the water and Maguro got out from the vessel's hatch. Then, Maguro jumped off from the submarine and landed at the base of the tower.
Maguro: "Okay, and now I'll move to the battle phase!"
Sylvio: "...? Heh. Surely you must be blind with that hair of yours, Maguro… Lightning Hoverboard has more attack points than your goofy little submarine."
Maguro: "Oh, I'm not attacking your hoverboard."
Sylvio: "What, you're not?"
Maguro: "Confused, are we? Well… I guess l could enlighten you on what I'm actually doing. See, Submarineroid is able to attack you directly with its special ability!"
Maguro grinned as he said this, and Sylvio didn't like that nasty little surprise.
Sylvio: "What…?!"
Maguro: "Submarineroid, attack Sylvio directly! Torpedo Strike!"
Submarineroid then fired a torpedo at Sylvio, and Maguro began to scale the tower as this happened. Sylvio saw the torpedo coming at him and he knew that he couldn't stop the attack in time.
Sylvio: "Agh-!"
The torpedo made its mark and Sylvio was blasted away. He landed on the ground and lost 800 life points. He then got up and noticed that Maguro was no longer at the base of the tower.
Sylvio: "...! Damn it! I need to stop him before he reaches the top. Lightning Hoverboard! Ha!"
Sylvio jumped back on his monster, flew up the tower, and saw Maguro from one of the windows. Maguro saw Sylvio from where he was and spoke to him.
Maguro: "After Submarineroid attacks or is attacked, it switches to defense mode. Good luck getting through its defense!"
Sylvio: "*growl* You're starting to annoy me with that little vessel of yours…"
Maguro: "I'm glad you feel that way. I'll end my turn."

Sylvio: "My turn, then! Ha!"
Sylvio drew his card for the turn and it just so happened to be Stargazer Magician. He looked at the card, and laughed.
Sylvio: "Hahahahaha! Perfect! I can deal the final blow to you, right here and now!"
Maguro: "Really? I doubt it. I have 3200 life points, AND a monster with 1800 defense points."
Sylvio: "Oh, you'll see…"
At that moment, Declan's voice came from Sylvio's duel disk and…
Declan: "The first step is to set the Pendulum cards."
Sylvio: "...?"
Declan: "Do exactly as you're told. You will start with scale one Stargazer Magician, then move on to scale eight Timegazer Magician as you use them both to set the Pendulum Scale."
Sylvio: "All right... First, I'll take scale one Stargazer Magician... and scale eight Timegazer Magician, then use them to set the Pendulum Scale!"
Maguro: "...!"
Maguro shivered as he continued running up the tower and Sylvio placed the Pendulum cards on his duel disk. The word "Pendulum" appeared in the middle of the two cards. And once the Pendulum Scale was set...
Sylvio and Declan: "Pendulum Summon!"
Sylvio: "Monsters, emerge!"
Three monsters appeared around Sylvio and his Lightning Hoverboard.
Sylvio: "Allow me to introduce Power Dart Striker, along with its colleagues, Rocket Dart Striker… and the most powerful of this trio: Ultimate Dart Striker!"
Power Dart Striker had 1800 attack, Rocket Dart Striker had 1900 attack, and Ultimate Dart Striker had 2400 attack. And when all three appeared, Sylvio was blown away by the power of Pendulum Summoning.
Sylvio: "Hahahahaha! I did it! I actually did it on the first try! Oh, I'll have to thank Yuya later for the cards… because I'm now a Pendulum master."
Maguro: "He didn't want you to have those Pendulum cards, Sylvio!"
Sylvio: "Oh, be quiet."
Declan's voice then came from Sylvio's duel disk and he said…
Declan: "Well done, Sylvio. Now, take aim and strike this Maguro boy down."
Sylvio: "That was the plan… Rocket Dart Striker, take aim and blast Submarineroid out of the water!"
Rocket Dart Striker attacked and it destroyed Submarineroid below at the base of the tower.
Sylvio: "And with your Submarineroid out of the way, I'm free to attack you directly with the rest of my monsters! Lightning Hoverboard, Power Dart Striker, and Ultimate Dart Striker… Attack Maguro directly and bring me an exciting victory!"
All three of Sylvio's remaining monsters took aim at Maguro and fired through one of the windows.
Maguro stopped and looked at the attacks as they came to them. The attacks all landed and a dust cloud appeared where Maguro was at. Sylvio stopped midflight and he was ecstatic at the result.
Sylvio: "Aaaahahahaha! I win! I won using the wonderful power of Pendulum Summoning!"
As Sylvio celebrated though, the dust cloud disappeared... and Maguro was somehow still standing with 400 life points. Sylvio saw this and he was shocked.
Sylvio: "H-how are you still standing?!"
Declan saw this from the large computer, and he was surprised as well.
Declan: (What? How did this Maguro boy survive all three of those direct attacks?)
Maguro coughed a bit before the dust completely settled. From there, he started to explain what happened.
Maguro: "I'm still standing because just before all three direct attacks connected… I activated the card that I set on the first turn of the duel. And the card in question was Damage Diet. Thanks to this handy little trap, I was able to cut all the damage that would take in half for the turn. So even though you were able to deal 2800 points of damage to me… it wasn't quite enough to finish me off."
After Maguro explained, Sylvio was mad…
Sylvio: "...! Why you little…!"
And as for Declan, he was somewhat impressed with Maguro's play.
Declan: (Maguro Sasaki… I initially underestimated you. I didn't know who you were, and I didn't think you would be a match for Sylvio because of that. But, now that I have seen you in action… you might be a somewhat competent duelist.)
Sylvio gritted his teeth, frustrated that he was unable to take Maguro out with what was supposed to be the final blow.
Maguro: "Hey, why are you even mad anyway? You're winning. You have all those monsters out, AND you have 3200 life points. If I were you: I would still be happy with the result, even if it wasn't exactly what you were looking for."
Sylvio: "Be. Quiet. Remember what I told you and your friends while I led you all through Leo Institute? I said, and I quote: "Our faculty says that if you want to achieve excellence... you must surround yourself with excellence.". And as a top student of the Leo Institute of Dueling, I strive to achieve the best results in any duel I partake in. I refuse to have myself fall short of whatever challenge is given to me! I am Sylvio, and I will NOT be upstaged by the likes of you."
Maguro: "Whatever. Do you end your turn or not?"
Sylvio: "*growl* Yes, I end my turn… I don't have anything else left to play."
Maguro: "Good, then allow me to take my next turn."
Sylvio: "... Go ahead, make your final move… because I'll take you down on my next turn."

Maguro: "All right, here I go! I draw! … Yes, this is just what I need to win the duel!"
Sylvio: "You're joking."
Maguro: "Oh no, I'm not. If you don't believe me, then check this out! I activate Cost Down. By discarding one card from my hand, all monsters in my hand have their levels cut down by two until the end of this turn. And thanks to that, I can summon this monster without needing to sacrifice another monster! Come forth: B.E.S. Big Core!"
Big Core appeared and hovered around the tower. The ship itself dwarfed Sylvio's monsters in terms of size. However…
Sylvio: "Not half bad, I admit… but it's not strong enough to destroy Ultimate Dart Striker."
Maguro: "Yeah, I know that. But… I have this other card in my hand, and it'll help me win this duel. I activate the quick-play spell: Limiter Removal! This card doubles the attack points of all my machine monsters. The catch is… all machine monsters affected by this are destroyed at the end of this turn. But that's okay, because I plan on ending the duel this turn. And since B.E.S. Big Core is a machine, its 2300 attack points are doubled to 4600! And guess what? If I have Big Core attack and destroy your Lightning Hoverboard… then you'll take 3200 points of damage, which is exactly enough to finish you off!"
Sylvio: "W-wait, WHAT?! Hold on, time out!"
Maguro: "Oh, there aren't gonna be any time outs for this game session… B.E.S. Big Core: Attack and destroy Lightning Hoverboard, along with the rest of Sylvio's life points! Rapid-Fire Cannon Storm!"
The attack occurred and Sylvio scrambled around with Lightning Hoverboard to try and find an action card, but he simply didn't have enough time before…
Sylvio: "AAAAAAAAAAH!"
Lightning Hoverboard was destroyed, and Sylvio lost all of his remaining life points as he fell to the water below him.

Winner: Maguro
Maguro: "Yeah, I won! Now, time to rescue those girls."
Amitie, Lidelle, and Zuzu saw all of that unfold and they were relieved.
Zuzu: "*sigh* Thank goodness…"
Amitie: "Yay! Good job, Maguro! You beat Sylvio!"
Lidelle: "Th-that's good and all… but we're still in danger here. This tower is about to collapse."
Zuzu: "Maguro, where are you?"
As Zuzu asked that out loud, Maguro appeared at the top of the tower.
Maguro: "*pant* Don't worry, girls… I'm here. B.E.S. Big Core, get over here."
Big Core then flew as close to Maguro as possible without bumping into the tower. Once it stopped at a good spot, Maguro smiled.
Maguro: "Good. Climb aboard, we're escaping with style."
The three girls nodded and the four got into Big Core. And then, Maguro manually drove the ship down to where Draco was as the tower began to collapse. When Big Core got to her, Maguro opened up the ship's cockpit and said…
Maguro: "Climb into the ship, Draco! The tower is about to crash down on the base and the water!"
Draco: "O-okay!"
Draco finally got out of the water and entered Big Core's cockpit. Maguro closed it up again and flew the ship out that area of the action field, leaving Sylvio behind to suffer from the collapsing tower. Once Maguro and the girls were safe, they all sighed in relief. Then, Maguro had Big Core land in a large enough spot. After that, he and the girls got out of the ship. When they did, the Big Core and the action field both faded. Before everyone knew it, their surroundings changed back to the dueling zone. Yuya then saw that everyone was safe and…
Yuya: "...! Zuzu, everyone! You're all okay!"
Yuya ran up to Zuzu and he smiled.
Zuzu: "Oh, Yuya… the whole thing was terrifying. I thought I was gonna die…"
Yuya: "But you all are fine now. … Thanks, Maguro!"
Maguro: "You can thank me later, Yuya. Besides, I still need to get those Pendulum cards back for you."
As Maguro said that, Sylvio groaned in pain and his buddies rushed to him. Seeing this, Maguro went up to them and glared at Sylvio. Though, Sylvio still wasn't able to see Maguro's eyes from the angle that he was looking at.
Maguro: "Now, I believe you have something to give back. Hand me those Pendulum cards."
Sylvio: "Ugh… Damn you, Maguro… I won't forget you defeating me in such a humiliating way."
Maguro: "That's what you get for taking something that wasn't yours in the first place. Now, the cards."
Sylvio: "Tch. … Here, take them and get out of my sight."
Sylvio handed Maguro Stargazer Magician and Timegazer Magician. This satisfied the latter, and turned his back to the former and his buddies.
Maguro: "Thanks… and goodbye, Sylvio."
Maguro then walked back to Yuya and…
Maguro: "Here you go, Yuya. I did what I said I would do."
Yuya: "You have no idea how grateful I am for you right now, Maguro."
Maguro: "Heh. I'm glad I could help you out, Yuya… Anyway, I think we all need a breather after that fiasco."
Amitie: "But, where do we-"
Before Amitie could finish asking her question, the boy that Yuya saw earlier came up to the group.
?: "Hey, you."
Yuya: "Hm? Wait a minute… I saw you walking past me when I was reading that flyer. I also noticed that you stopped just before stepping away. Who are you?"
?: "Me? I'm someone who's amped by this guy's skills!"
The boy then pointed to Maguro and the latter was surprised.
Maguro: "Huh? You were watching the duel?"
?: "Yeah! Oh, and don't worry: I'm not like that guy over there. I don't take other people's cards to bask in a wonderful feeling. That guy and his pals are nothing more than bullies."
Zuzu: "Tell me about it…"
?: "Anyway, my name's Sora. It's nice to meet you guys."
Amitie: "I'm Amitie! And this Lidelle, Draco… And the guy that you're looking up to right now is Maguro."
Yuya: "My name is Yuya."
Zuzu: "And I'm Zuzu."
Yuya: "So, um… do you study here at the Leo Institute?"
Sora: "I considered coming here, but Maguro's moves changed my mind. Maguro… I think I'll make you my dueling guru."
Maguro: "Huh…? Say what?"
Maguro couldn't believe what he was hearing, and he freaked out in his mind. The others freaked out as well.
Zuzu: "Wh-?!
Amitie, Lidelle, Draco, and Yuya: "Whaaaaaaaa?!"
Maguro: "You're kidding, right? You want ME to teach you about dueling?"
Sora: "Yup! If I'm gonna bear down and learn to duel, I wanna have fun by doing some cool moves. Maguro, your duel might've not been the most impressive one that I've ever seen… but it was exciting and exhilarating."
Maguro: "Uh… thanks, Sora… but the truth is: That duel you saw right there... it was the first one I ever had."
Sora: "Really? But, you looked like you were doing well…"
After Sora said that, Maguro smiled and said...
Maguro: "Well, what can I say? I'm a fast learner… I like playing games and Duel Monsters is pretty much a game. So, I guess it only makes sense that I would be good at playing it."
As Maguro said that… Declan and that one man had just finished watching everything unfold, and the latter was upset that Sylvio lost the duel to who seemed to be a nobody.
?: "Don't just lay there, Sylvio. Get up and take back those P-"
Declan: "No. Leave it be."
?: "B-but Mr. President!"
Declan: "That Maguro Sasaki boy and Yuya Sakaki are both starting to intrigue me... There may be more to them than I expected."
Declan stared at the computer screen as he said this, and his mind began making many different thoughts in relation to the two boys he became interested in. One of them in particular stuck like a thumbtack on a bulletin board.
Declan: (... I might have to perform a background check on Maguro Sasaki later… I want to know where he's from.)
Author's Notes: Well, that was certainly different from the anime, now wasn't it? Instead of Yuya dueling against Sylvio, Maguro took charge and managed to take back those Pendulum cards after making one hell of a comeback. And he made it with B.E.S. Big Core of all things! So yeah, if you couldn't tell: I made it so that a lot of Maguro's monsters were that of the spaceships. They're not really an archetype, but they do go together. So expect monsters like Lord British Space Fighter to be coming in another duel I have planned for Maguro to participate in. Anyway, I wanted Maguro to have all the spaceship monsters because not only are they cool, but they come from video games. And since Maguro IS a gamer… I figured that giving him these monsters would only make sense.
I also decided to give him some other machine type monsters, like Submarineroid, for utility. Why? Well, outside of Blue Thunder T-45 and a couple of other ships… there aren't any ships that have good stats. And since most duelists in Yu-Gi-Oh! anime series don't have more than one copy of any single monster… I had to fill monster card slots in Maguro's deck with machine monsters that help the spaceships indirectly. In Submarineroid's case, its purpose in the deck is to be able to attack directly whenever the spaceships can't get over something. And also, the opponent losing 800 life points to the little vessel is surprisingly significant in this case, because duelists only start off with 4000 life points. Just five attacks from Submarineroid, and BOOM! Someone is going to go down…
And even if Submarineroid itself doesn't deplete all of the opponent's life points, it's paving the way for another monster to eliminate the remaining ones. Not to mention: The little sub has 1800 defense, and it switches to defense mode after attacking. So although it may seem to be a weird inclusion to what's essentially a spaceship deck without stun tools like Royal Oppression... Submarineroid actually kind of synergizes with the ships. And not only does it help in wearing the opponent down, but it can potentially stall them with that defense stat. Alright, I'll stop going on about the inclusion of Submarineroid and actually point out other differences this series of events has compared to the anime.
First of all, I cut out Allie, Tate, and Frederick from this story entirely… mainly because I felt like none of them added anything to the scenes that they appeared in the actual series. They were all one dimensional as characters, and they weren't important whatsoever. Really, all they ever did for the most part… was act as a cheering squad for Yuya during the Standard Dimension arc. Also, had I actually kept those three kids in this take of Arc-V, then the amount of characters would be overwhelming with the addition of the Puyo Puyo gang. So, those were the reasons why I cut Allie, Tate, and Frederick out. To me, they were nothing but filler characters. You guys are free to disagree with me, but that's my opinion on those three.
Aside from that, I've mostly made small dialogue and story changes so far to already existing beats in the story. Most of the new additions up to this point obviously came from the Puyo Puyo characters getting themselves involved in things. Like, since Maguro was the one to duel Sylvio instead… Declan is now intrigued with him as well. Changes like this one will get PRETTY interesting when we get to later duels and events. And because it was Maguro that dueled Sylvio... Sora came up to him, rather than coming up to Yuya.
As you can see, I'm already doing a lot with Maguro because in the Puyo Puyo games… he really isn't utilized much as a character outside of Puyo Puyo Tetris 2. I wanted to change that and actually give him both struggles, as well as actual character development. I'll do this for most of the other Puyo Puyo characters as well… giving them the spotlight they truly deserve. And speaking of these specific characters… You guys are probably wondering why Amitie is the main character of this story? Well, I decided that it would be Amitie because I wanted this crossover story to be centralized around the Puyo Puyo cast, first and foremost. And since Amitie's character is surprisingly similar to Yuya's in a lot of ways, I figured that it would make perfect sense for her to be the main character of this. I know that it doesn't look like she's THE main character, but her role will be a lot more important later on.
I know of another question you guys might have on your minds: "Are we going to see how the rest of the Puyo Puyo characters who were sent to these dimensions are faring before the Standard Dimension arc ends?". And to that, I say: Wait and see. I don't want to reveal everything to you all… What fun would that be? I'll tell you: It wouldn't be very fun if I did that. Anyway, expect the preserved dialogue from the English dub of the anime. Though, I will have the characters say "die" and "kill", or whatever else if the scene calls for it. And speaking of which, I had Sylvio say "damn it" a couple of times in this chapter just for sake of flavor. I mean, there WAS a reason why I made this a T-rated story. So expect there to be at least some mild swearing here. Other than that though, it's time for the chapter summary!
The next day came for Amitie and co., and they, along with Yuya and Zuzu... eventually met a guy by the name of Sylvio. He made himself look like he took interest in Yuya and his Pendulum cards, before bringing the group to the Leo Institute of dueling. There, Amitie and co. were impressed with the place as they were being shown around. As this happened, Yuya looked at a flyer and noticed a boy with light blue hair walking past him. Soon enough, the group came to a dueling zone. All seemed to be fine at first as Sylvio's buddies looked at Yuya's Stargazer Magician and Timegazer Magician… but then the young man in question stated that the Pendulum cards were his.
This quickly led to a situation where Sylvio used his buddies to hold the girls hostage. Yuya was about to duel Sylvio with seemingly worthless cards, but then Maguro came into picture. Maguro ended up being the one to duel Sylvio… and he used his own deck. Maguro almost lost from Sylvio's use of Pendulum Summoning, but thanks to Damage Diet, he survived three direct attacks. On the next and final turn of the duel, Maguro used Cost Down to summon B.E.S. Big Core and used that large ship to win.
And with that win, he was able to get Sylvio to cough up Stargazer Magician and Timegazer Magician. From there, Maguro gave the two cards back to Yuya and the latter was grateful to him. Then, the boy with light blue hair from earlier showed up and introduced himself to the group as Sora. Sora said that he wanted to learn from Maguro after seeing that duel unfold. And from the large computer, Declan finished watching everything and he is now intrigued with Maguro's abilities as a duelist. And he might even attempt to make a background check on Maguro. With that in mind… What will happen next? Next chapter, Chapter 2: Stuffed Animals.
