Chapter 3
What do you mean no refunds?!
The tuition was only a little bit more expensive than what was initially thought and made my expenditure on some of my vices be cut for a while.
Which was totally fine.
Completely understandable.
…Really!
The important thing is I got in, which was a godsend after that rather suffocating week of nothingness.
The time in between the day I got my acceptance letter… or was it a Holo-telegram? I was able to get the school supplies and uniform which thankfully accommodated my quirk as it would have been really uncomfortable to make them be out of the way all the time. The uniform itself isn't bad but could we at least get some hats or headgear and maybe some different colors?
It's not like it's too important, but it would have definitely been welcomed.
I set my alarm early to avoid any complications like that time at the entrance exams as it seems while Japan has a very dense hero population, there still seems to be a lot of criminals running around.
Then again this is a smaller country than Mexico, by a wider margin, and in a much larger city more so than the ones I'm used to.
I made it to school with some time left for the gates to open with a slight delay, as a criminal tried to rob a convenience store but was the unfortunate target for a group of heroes who happened to be in the area.
Needless to say, the guy did pretty well to last as long as he did.
The gate finally opened, and I made my way to the classroom although I'm still confused on why they have three numbered doors to get into the school.
After asking a senior with sharp ears and anxiety the same level as a deer. I finally made it to the classroom with help from his directions as the door with 1-A plastered on it made it easier than it would have been without it.
The door may be big, but couldn't they make it nicer to look at?
Inside the classroom were three others, two of which greeted me quite formally, one of them I recognized almost immediately as the guy who asked Present Mic about the Zero-pointer. He wore glasses and stood almost as tall as me and moved as rigid as a military officer when their superior was inspecting his men. The other was a pretty girl with raven hair done in a ponytail and had the manners of an aristocrat. The final guy who didn't even acknowledge my presence and was familiar looking and I'm sure if I put more effort into it, I could remember where I have seen him before. Especially with his blonde hair and red eyes and a face that seems to only know anger.
After a short introduction with both of them which left me with nothing but forgotten names and some shame on my part for forgetting so easily. I made a plan to use music to escape any possible conversation and escape the embarrassment of asking for their names again if it happened. I pulled out my CD player and have to decide whether I want to listen to Grupo Niche or Hall & Oates.
Eventually I settled on Grupo Niche, as I wrote down what I'm going to eat for the week with the funds and coupons I had. I don't take particular note of a slow but steady pace of people coming in or how as the noise around the class increased, I subconsciously raised the volume more and more till it was to the max.
People trickle in and take their own seats and talk to one another forming friend groups early. A boy with a crow…or is it a raven's head sits next to me and a familiar girl with vines sits behind me. I don't engage with either of them and they don't with me as they get swept up in conversations with others or stick to themselves. After a bit more time I finished my grocery list for the week.
The bluenette finally notices that I was listening to something loudly and glares in my direction, before the blondie kicks his feet back on his desk and prioritizes him over me.
In anticipation I pause the music at an appropriate time and watch with glee as the first school fight might start earlier than anticipated.
"You there! What do you think you're doing with your feet on that desk!" he says all the while pointing like some ace attorney character. " The hell you say to me you extra!?" Unabashed he keeps going now, chopping his hands like a well oil machine.
"These desks were once held by our respectable seniors! Not only that you are disrespecting the very people who toiled to make these, I must insist that you cease this disrespect at once!"
Unaffected from the lecture the blonde replies "The hell? Why would I do that for some two-bit nobodies!"
The bluenette takes a deep breath and starts talking again with a calmer demeanor.
"Look, I believe we got off to the wrong foot. My name is Tenya Iida, and I proudly attended Somei Middle School, pleased to meet you." he takes his hand out in a gesture for a handshake.
He pulled his hand from his side so fast that if he was in a movie about cowboys, The other guy would have died before he could have cleared leather.
"Somei huh, So you're some fucking elite then? I'll enjoy crushing you like the extra you are!"
Tenya gasps dramatically, like a soap opera reveal for some lost child who was hiding in plain sight and looks genuinely surprised by the statement. Like it's the first time that he has heard something rude form him.
"How dare you threaten a fellow student, how barbaric of you!"
I'm pretty sure he would have continued if a green haired kid didn't open the door and Tenya immediately switched his priorities to him.
What a shame too, it was just starting to get good.
By now the seat in front of me had a redhead and he was chatting with a pink girl with really nice eyes.
Why can't I have nice eyes like that?
"If you're here to make friends then you might as well quit now while you're ahead."
Tenya and the people he was talking to freeze as soon as they hear someone interrupt them. Since when was that girl there? They turn around and look at someone on the floor, judging from the downward tilt of their heads. He walks into the room, and I get a good look at him. Overall, he looks like a guy that shaves every few months with a haircut every few years and dresses like a private security guard with no body armor or headgear and a big gray scarf that looks like he needs a few days of sleep.
"I'm Mister Shouta Aizawa and welcome to the hero course. I'll be your homeroom teacher."
The rest of the class looks on in complete shock as this man takes out a juice pack and downs it in one go.
He then pulls out a few boxes from behind his desk and tosses a uniform to Tenya and his group. " Take theses and head down to the field outside, and don't dawdle the directions are on the board."
He leaves and the class jumps to get uniforms with their names as we all go to the lockers and change. There's not a peep in the locker as anticipation in the air is at an all-time high. We make it to the track and field and the class waits for the last few who aren't done changing yet. When the final members of our class show up, he looks at them with disappointment and says we need to work on changing faster as we won't have the luxury of time on the job.
He can say that for now without anything coming out of his body like me or that one guy with the tail but it's a different story when you do.
" Today we are going to be doing a quirk assessment test."
"""What?"""
The class cries out in confusion besides a select few, the one girl that was talking to Tenya speaks up. "But what about orientation ?!" She said, her face filled with worry and panic radiated off of her in waves. Mr. Aizawa stared directly into her soul and replied coldly " If you're going to be a hero you need to not waste your time on such pointless things as an orientation. Bakugo!"
He tosses a softball to him, and Bakugo catches it with a passing glance.
Mr. Aizawa continues talking with no visible reaction to the blondes' catch, with a worn-out expression he keeps speaking.
"You scored the highest on the exam so don't hold anything back and use the full power of your quirk." Bakugo went ahead and stood in a circle on the and stretched a bit before revealing a vicious smirk and tossing the ball with all his strength he adds a huge explosion, and a trail of fire follows the ball as it sails for quite the distance, the class as one looks to Mr. Aizawa for the final result.
"...753.52 Meters." he said with no emotion about the feat that Bakugo pulled off, but the rest of the class went wild and started going crazy, all of them excited to go ahead and use their quirks with no restrictions.
"All right! Using our quirks to the fullest!"
"This is gonna be so fun!" one pink girl who was talking to the redhead earlier said, causing our teacher to react like a Yugi-oh trap card.
"Oh! Fun you say? Well, how about this for fun. Whoever scores lowest will be deemed to have no potential and be expelled from the hero course?" he says with amusement rolling off of him as he has stolen the excitement that teemed in the air like the grinch who stole Christmas.
The live action one from a few centuries back with Jim Carrey.
"What! But that's not fair, we worked really hard to just get in, you can't do that!" the one girl who was talking to Tenya said tears threatening to spill out of her eyes. Mr. Aizawa regards her coldly, not caring about her or our predicament that he set up for us.
"Not fair you say? What about Hurricanes? Or Villain attacks? And don't forget about plagues. Because this world is not fair, and it is better to deal with them here and learn how to solve them than it is to complain about them." he said. Knocking any kind of response, she had in the air.
I raise my hand to at least get one thing off my mind that I had the misfortune to attend a while back. He is annoyed at my question but decides to at least hear it.
"Yes, Garcia or would you prefer to be called Martinez?"
"Either or Mr. Aizawa."
"Alright Garcia, why did you raise your hand?"
"I have a question sir."
"Well out with it then." he says with a sigh as he quickly loses his patience.
"Will we lose our tuition in the event that we get expelled?"
"..." confusion marks everyone as only a select few really understand my concern. Aizawa himself looks like he really doesn't want to be here anymore and after some time to think of an answer he finally responds. "Yes."
'Damn…I have to deal with this bullshit now...' I started to pray quickly due to the circumstances and years of practice for time like these.
The resolve after being told that if they failed our teachers test, that their dreams would be killed before it could even start brought resolve out of everyone attending, excluding of course our teacher.
Our first test is a fifty-meter dash and starts calling people up to go and immediately I start to warm up my jets and myself for preparation.
"Oh hey, it's you again Garcia, it's great to see you passed!" It took longer for me to recognize the voice than it should, but it clicks all the same.
"Toru Hagakure Right?"
"Yup!" she says while presumably pumping her fist in the air. " The one and only. Wow, it's so warm over here?"
"Yeah, sorry about that, my quirk needs to be warmed up a little beforehand so to make acceleration easier."
"Really? Are you allowed to do that?" she asked as my mind also thinks it over and I decide that I should warm up on the starting line.
"...I don't know if I'm allowed but now that you've mentioned it, I don't want to risk getting him on my case just yet." Now powering down my jets I look at the people who are currently racing and see it's The pink girl and the shiny Frenchman. It dawned on me that I looked very antisocial before talking to Toru, as there are already groups of people talking like they have known each other since middle school. I hear the robots synthetically yell start and the Frenchman starts off well with a navel blast as he is facing the starting line. It honestly would have been pretty impressive if he didn't fall down and roll all the while the pink chick was ice skating, or would she be rollerblading? Across the track and ends up first to finish with the Frenchman close behind
How can you speak Japanese with a French accent?
I think reality in Japan is weirder than it should be now thinking about it.
"Wow, that was pretty cool how they used their quirks like that. What do you think about it Garcia?" Toru said, bouncing on one foot to the other. "It was pretty creative I'll give them that, it made me think about a few things myself. I just hope that some of them work out otherwise it would be pretty embarrassing."
Mr. Aizawa called another pair forward and I didn't hear my name being called, so for the most part I ignored it.
"Oh? Come on tell me some of them, they might be really cool! Or they could be pretty funny."
"Well, if you insist. I think for the ball toss I'm gonna try and get some momentum by spinning a bit in the air like a sling, and for I think the pushups and sit ups I'll see if I can use my jets to push me up and down, and the running and long jump part I'm just gonna fly."
"Woah, I didn't think about the first two but that last one was pretty obvious." she said as kept going through his list before I heard her name come up.
"Toru Hagakure and Hanta Sero."
"Looks like you're up Toru."
"Yeah I-..."
"You okay there?" she didn't say anything at first and seemed to have snapped out of it a second later.
"Yeah, it's just weird to have you address me by my first name."
"Oh, sorry about that, I forget at times."
"It's fine really, it was just surprising that's all you, but you can call me Toru if you want to."
"Neat I was probably going to keep on doing it because some things tend to not stick. Anyways you should go before Mr. Aizawa gets impatient and good luck!"
"Thank you!" she yelled as she made her way to the track and decided that I should at least take a look at the rest of my classmates. 'This place really is a class act hahaa…I should work on that.' The 50-meter dash with Toru and Hanta was fairly impressive as Hanta propelled himself forward like a slingshot and Toru despite just being invisible was fast. She finished at 6.52 while Hanta finished at 5.40. As Mr. Aizawa called another pair up to the track, I finally registered in my mind that one of my classmates goes to the same church as me. 'Oh, I think I know exactly who she is, she is the basket donation collector.'
"Hey…did you see that…I…was pretty fast." Trou said while gasping for air.
"Yeah, you must have done track or something like that."
"No…I did lacrosse." she said still winded after her sprint on the track.
"Jonathan Garcia Martinez and Minoru Mineta."
'Alright game face on, it's time to make sure that I don't get cheated out of my money.' Walking up to the track the guy I'm racing is about up to my thigh and has stress balls for hair? Well doesn't matter as he's here and we prepare ourselves, either by starting their literal engines, or grabbing a few balls off of their head.
"On your mark…get set…GO!"
Blasting off I make it to the finishing line first at 4.02 and Minoru finishes at 5.53. I really wish I could warm up more, but acceleration wasn't really something I thought about training until now. 'Alright one down seven more to get time to show some of these tools who's gonna rule the skies.'
The next set of tests went swimmingly as I got an alright score in the grip test, completely cleared the sandbox by flying high above the sand box and landing as far as I felt like away from the group.
The ball toss was up next, and Toru has somehow included another girl called Tsuyu Asui in our small group and has insisted on being called Tsu which makes my life just a bit easier as I was 100% gonna call her by her first name as I have concluded that it would be easier on my life then to remember their last names.
"Hey Garcia, can I ask you something?" Tsu asked while we watched Tenya launch the ball by kicking it.
"Sure, and you can call me Johnathan if you want."
"What's it like in Mexico?"
"What part of Mexico are you talking about?"
"Mm… like just in general."
"Well, where I'm from it's like the countryside you could say, the roads barely get maintained and most days are a workday. The only times I go anywhere is because I deliver messages or packages to other people."
"Did you work for a post office?"
Midoriya's turn is next after someone else went and he starts mumbling with panic written on his face and worry follows his words but me, Toru, And Tsu are too caught up in our conversation to pay it any proper attention than just acknowledging it.
"No, it was mostly independent, people just called my mom or caught me on my walks and just ask me to send something to a relative or to pick something up for them from somewhere out of a twenty-minute radius."
"I'm guessing you did this by flying."
"Yep"
A yelp of panic comes from Midoriya as his throw flops pathetically a few meters away.
Properly focusing back on Midoriya and in their own world as in the span of a small chat Midoriya made the top of our teachers shit list in that time as he was scared witless with scarf floating around and eyes glowing a demonic red with his hair floating around him as if he were freefalling from a plane.
"What do you think he did to get our teacher acting like he owed him money?"
"I don't know to be honest. One minute he looked ready to throw the ball with all his might the next he threw a pretty pathetic distance and started freaking the heck out with Aizawa sensei saying how he shouldn't be allowed here."
Toru said with a silent Tsuyu observing the last of our teachers talk with Midoriya as he lets him try again.
"Alright fire your one shot and get ready to pack up."
Mr. Aizawa said with the calmest, and most tired expression humanly possible that was his default state that if I hadn't witnessed his anger I would have never known if he could have bothered to have class order during lessons. Most conversations halted to see if this was the end of the line for Midoriya and his future as a hero.
On the upside he could proudly say that he almost walked the distance.
He stood there for a moment talking to himself in a small voice that I couldn't hear before he got ready to pitch. With a fierce look of determination, he brought the ball back and with a shout he shot the ball with the force of a cannon chucked it into the air.
"SMAAASH!"
anticipation filled the field as everyone waited to see the results of the unexpected throw by the kid who up until now had not stood out in the slightest now is the center of attention.
"...755 Meters."
Mr. Aizawa, who before looked like he barely had the energy to live, had the most maniacal smile that really set off alarms in my head. Most of the class was at awe with the display of power that hadn't witnessed it before, except for the few who weren't.
With that said, quite an intense reaction from Katsuki sprung into a rage that was directed towards one person.
"DEKU!"
"AH"
Before reaching his target disabled his quirk and wrapped him up like a fly in a spider's web.
"Bakugou I would appreciate it if you did not attack your classmates, you're giving me dry eye."
With a few whispered words he let the boy down and he begrudgingly made his way back with the rest of us.
"Alright with that said and done, let's keep going, you all still have more tests to go through."
"...Is Japan usually like this?"
"No, I think it's Just UA ribbit." Tsu said, with an accepting look already present. This place is already making me have high stress levels on the first day. Sometimes I wish I was better at math to get a different career choice but it's far too late for that.
I just hope I don't lose my tuition.
"How did he disable his quirk like that?" I ask just hoping for anyone to explain.
"Oh, you didn't hear what Midoriya said? That is Eraserhead the Erasure Hero."
The person who said that was blonde and had a lightning bolt on the side of his head that dyed his hair black.
"Does he actually erase it, or does he just stop it?"
"I'm pretty sure that he just stops it while he looks in a direction but I'm not 100% sure if that's how it works." Toru said while her sleeve moved in a way that could be assumed to show that she was tapping her chin.
"Works for me. Anyways we should go before we're next on his hit list."
At that note we moved to take the last few tests and did our best to stay in school and hopefully continue with our lessons.
After the final tests we gathered around to see the results and see who would be kicked out.
"Alright class, instead of showing your results individually, look at it yourselves."
The results pulled up and scanning it for my place I found it sure enough and boy do I feel good.
8. Jonathan Garcia Martinez
Sure, it wasn't number one but it's way better than being last. Reaching for my crucifix I pray a quick thank you to the lord and see who got last.
"By the way I lied nobody's getting expelled."
Falling to my hands and knees I swear that this place is gonna give me high blood pressure from the fuckery that is going on. What was the benefit of saying that our tuition was on the line like that?
I really need to relax after all this drama and unnecessary stress.
"That was way too close for comfort. I hope it isn't like this all year."
Said Toru, hunched over, still exhausted from the long-distance run and her close call in being expelled, I can't help but nod in agreement with her even if I didn't have as close of a call as she did. I thank the lord that whatever parts of a garden hose quirk and a jet quirk mixed to make what I am now which is a weirder version of a jet with better mobility than one then please sign me up for more things that shouldn't work at all working out better than it should in the end.
"Oh, my bad I probably should have said something." Said Momo Yaoyorozu, the 1st place winner of our impromptu test in an almost disappointed tone.
I swear if things keep going at this pace with people like that I'm probably going to end up in a psychiatric ward. Everyone else was dealing with the news in their own way by either taking it as a fun challenge or trying to brush it off.
"Your syllabus is on your desks, memorize them by tomorrow all of you are dismissed." said leaving us to our own devices. He also gave an order for Midoriya to head to the Nurse to fix his finger before he disappeared behind the school.
"Hey, Garcia!"
Turning around, Ibara Shiozaki is jogging to me from the water fountains. She looks very excited, for what reason I couldn't tell you but maybe she's excited for All Saints Day.
"I didn't want to interrupt you before, but I was wondering if you were doing St. Joseph of Cupertino's Feast Day?"
"Haha, of course he is my patron saint after all. Let me guess you said that because he's the flying saint and I happen to fly around?"
"It brings me no shame to admit that my thoughts did lead me to that assumption."
"Come on guys. We have to catch up to the rest or we'll be sitting ducks in a pond." Toru said, busting our bubble as everyone else was already inside or at the entrance.
"COMING, Come on Ibara we should catch up with the rest of them." I said already making my way back inside.
"Though it is strange to be on a first name basis already, I do suppose the benefits of such actions far outweigh the unintentional disrespect."
She's giving you an excuse to get out of any problem that she might have had, just roll with it. Also, since when did she start talking like that?
"GUYS LET'S GO!" Toru said, already dragging us along back into the school.
Dang, she has a really strong grip, she may have been 18th in the quirk placements but I'm pretty sure she could carry a sack of cow feed without breaking pace.
"Hey Shota, how did it go this time?"
After his impromptu conversation with All Might and the dismissal of the students due to it being a half-day. He returned to the teachers' lounge to have coffee and finish his lesson plan before he got home to try and get a little bit of sleep before he went on his hero patrol.
It looks like that won't be a possibility.
Again.
"What is it that you want Nemuri?"
The woman in question is an inch shorter than him standing at 5'9 with long Dark spiky purple hair that reaches down to her waist. Her hero costume leaves nothing to the imagination with skin-colored tights with a black Breastless leather leotard. Aka Midnight: The R-Rated Hero.
In short, she looked like a dominatrix.
" Just wondering how many survived your personal initiation this year."
Not a glance was spared her way, but that was normal for Shota Aizawa as he always works even if it doesn't look like he is working at all.
"Yeah Shota! Tell me how many little listeners are still tuned in huh?"
It seems peace and quiet shall never be known to Aizawa as he has finally arrived.
"No one was expelled this time around. They were adequate enough and had a sliver of potential."
This caught the both of them off guard as it's always a few kids who don't make it. Heck last time he expelled the whole class for showing no potential.
"Wow! They must be something for you to keep them around. What were they like to impress the Grumpy Vampire like you?"
Ignoring the sad excuse for a joke, he finished up what he could before he had to go home to at least sleep for a few hours before he goes out on patrol. He wished he could get that I-Island coffee maker, but he doesn't make money like All Might or some of the other spotlight heroes. That and this gig for all its budget still doesn't pay enough for something like that.
"They showed potential and that's all I look for." He spoke. The list of heroes who would be available for internships needs to be updated as more and more heroes graduate and throw their own hats into the ring or take it out.
"On the topic of the kids, Thirteen and Power Loader need to know your class's quirks to finish any work that they have left or to be prepared for just in case. You know the standard thing they ask every year or so to keep things in mind while they do their jobs. But Thirteen did mention if you could keep an eye out for the high scorers in the rescue point category this time around."
Aizawa didn't respond immediately, finishing up before he had to go home to rest for his patrol and he had class tomorrow to prepare for so once again his morning was occupied. His friends, having known him for a long time, finished their own work as they waited for him to respond.
"...Yeah, I just emailed them all the information that I needed to tell them a little bit ago. I even gave her a little bit of information that she wanted to know about Midoriya and Shiozaki like she wanted."
He said as he packed up his things and started to walk out of school. His friends trailing behind him to leave together.
"I'm certain that you made her very happy. Especially since none of the kids that as she said, 'Showed great potential as rescue heroes.' were expelled." midnight said, as she put her large coat on and switched her glasses for contact lenses.
"Enough about that stuff guys! AIZAWA my man, do you want me to give you a lift back to your pad?"
Looking at the time on his phone, he sighed in acceptance for the pain he would endure again, as it would be preferable to ride with him again as the train is most definitely packed with people at this time.
"Fine, just don't play the radio at full volume again. Last time you blew out your speakers and almost burnt my sleeping bag."
"No promises are made!"
AN: Yeah, I'm still writing this even after not posting for like 3 months. I just didn't find the energy to finish it as I kind of pumped those first few chapters out like The Union pumped out Soldiers. It was entirely my fault and I hope yall are still reading this.
In some good news I'm trying to be more consistent and work myself up to write more and push these out on Saturday.
Also, I need to watch the show as I'm not reading the manga. I don't have money like that, nor do I wish to push money into it.
Anyways, have a good day.
