Hello my friendly, friend, friends! And welcome back to Mirage! Sorry it's taken so long for inspiration to kick me in the head. Lol. Anyways, here's the next, long over-due chapter! Disclaimer: I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh or the characters. Only the plot is mine. ^.-

Rogue

Yugi woke slowly, her muscles stiff and aching. She mildly wondered if her bandages had bled out again. She yawned, stretching her body cautiously as she began to wake herself up. Last night had been a fucking nightmare. After she had all but threatened to kill the king, her friends had to practically carry her back to the healing chambers. (Which wasn't hard, considering the amount of blood loss she had.) Poor Isis had to practically start from scratch to stop her bleeding again and re-do her bandages, soiled from when Atemu lashed out at her with his shadow magic. She could still feel the cold sting of the ephemeral blade as it slashed through her skin. Yugi slowly sat up and looked out the window. It was late morning, if she had to guess. She must have passed out for the rest of the day and all through the night then. Yugi looked down at herself and gingerly began unwrapping the bandages. She wanted to see how bad this was going to be. (And what scars her grandpa would throw a fit over if he ever saw them.) To her mild surprise yet quiet expectation, her wounds had all healed.

All of them but that damn bruise of hers. Why did that keep happening?

Every time she got hurt, she noticed that her body would heal itself over night, but her bruise would come back no matter what. Huffing Yugi placed a hand over her bump and once again willed it to heal. The ache went down and she knew she had been successful. Tossing off her bloody bandages Yugi hastily began to dress for the day, a plan already formulating in her mind. She had had enough of sitting around and waiting. She was tired of being held prisoner from her home by a bunch of cowards. But more than anything, she was just DONE with the Pharaoh and all of his cohorts. The more she thought about him as she moved about the room, the angrier she grew.

Yugi was done.

Josephine ran down the halls, her feet practically flying over the stones as she ran. " SHE'S GONE! YUGI'S GONE!" She screamed, bursting in to the great hall. Seth caught her by the shoulders, just in time to stop her from all but running him over. Despite the circumstances, Seth found himself quietly impressed at the amount of strength he needed on his part to slow her down. Josephine was quite strong.

" Calm down, Mongrel. What do you mean she's gone?" He asked sternly. Snarling the blonde shoved him away, her fist clutching the papyrus tightly in her hand.

" I went in to her room to make sure she was well, and I found her bandages on the floor and this note on her vanity table." Josephine shakily opened the crumpled paper, and sure enough Mahad could make out Yugi's native language displayed with the black ink.

" Well, what does it say?" Honda asked. Josephine bit her lip to keep herself from crying. She felt so helpless...

" I don't know." She confessed, bowing her head in shame. " I cannot read it." She confessed pitifully. Judai calmly stepped forward and gently took the paper from her. Although his magic was not as strong as the royal council's or his siblings, he did hold enough rudimentary magic of his own that Judai felt that he could decipher Yugi's message. Judai focused his energy on the papyrus, and his own magic began to take hold. The ink shifted to Judai's will, and the English-written words became Hieroglyphics, which oddly still looked as if it could be Yugi's own handwriting. Judai breathed in deeply before steadily reading the message aloud.

" Dear Judai,

I wish I could do better than this message, but I don't have the time. I'm going after Heba. Don't come looking for me and don't tell that psychotic nutjob you call your brother." Judai cast a nervous, side-long look at Atemu, who glared hard in response to her description of him. Knowing looks passed between the other members of the council. Swallowing thickly, he kept reading. " I know I'm breaking a billion and one rules here and I'll take any punishment you got when I get back. All I ask is that you please look after Syrus while I'm gone. Just let him know I'll be back soon and please have Kia and Padra stay with him when you can't. He's too little to understand what's going on right now. He shouldn't be left alone. I know we'll both be in trouble when I get back, and I'm sorry.

See you later, Judai.

Yugi."

A deafening silence fell over the group as Yugi's words fully sank in. " She's going after her?" Mana whispered fearfully. Just the thought of ever seeing Heba again made her very heart freeze in fear. " No...she can't...!"

" I agree. Yugi's magic is strong, but she cannot hope to defeat Heba alone. She has yet to even summon her Kas since that day!" Mahad cried. " We cannot let this come to pass! We must find her!"

" But how?" Asked Karim.

" Any ideas, Aknaudin?" Shada asked. Atemu turned to his uncle, arching a silent brow in question. Aknaudin said nothing. He turned his head away, unable to look anyone in the eyes.

" I have it!" Mahad said loudly. " By combining our powers, we should be able to scry Yugi's whereabouts. Perhaps even bring her home. " He suggested. Chazithius and Josephine shared mirroring looks of confusion.

" Scry?" The guard asked. Shimon nodded his head.

" Yes, my Lord. Scrying is a magical artform in which one might be able to determine another's location through measuring another's energy. By this school of thought, it is also possible to see events of the past, although briefly. Using magic to locate one is hard. To view past events in time, even harder."

" Yes, but with all our magic combined, I think we can manage it." Isis said confidently. " I agree with Master Shimon and Master Mahad. We must try!" She implored. The head magician nodded and turned to fully face the council.

" I shall invoke my Sennen ring to scry her soul. Isis, use your necklace to take us to the proper place and time she made her plans. Karim, use the Sennen scales to detect any evil in the happenings around her. Shada, use the key to peer into the state of her soul. Aknaudin, utilize your all-seeing eye to gage her thoughts. And finally, Pharaoh; Use the puzzle to strengthen our powers so that we may focus on her whereabouts and intentions. And Mana, lend your strength to the Pharaoh as well." The Sennen wielders all nodded and Atemu thrust out his hand and a tendril of shadow shot to the ground, before raising slowly to create within itself a shimmering black surface. A mirror made of darkness. Isis touched her necklace, focusing her energy on Yugi. Karim, Shada, Aknaudin, and Mahad all followed suit, feeling the power of the Pharaoh as he used his puzzle to heighten their abilities and wield them in tandem with his council. Mana focused her energy so that she could add to the Pharaoh and the council's power. What was reflected back to them in the mirror was the last thing they expected.

' I'M SICK OF THIS!' She swung her hand out, her limb connecting with the expensive vase sending it shattering to the floor. Yugi couldn't have cared less. ' I've had enough of this shit!' She ran across the room, hastily dressing and putting on a couple of jewels were within her reach with the intent to pawn them off if it came to it. (And feeling terrible about it since they were a gift from Judai. But at this point could it really be helped?) She knew it would be better to pack for a journey, but the palace's number one suspect for the crime of simply existing, carrying a travel bag might raise some red flags. She had to travel light and as inconspicuously as possible. Instantly the next thought in her mind was Syrus. She couldn't take him with her. Not now. Hastily, she scrambled about the room until she found what she was looking for; A piece of papyrus and a quill. Yugi wrote out her instructions hastily, praying to God Judai would find it. Her mission done Yugi ran out of the room, heading straight to the palace armory. Ahead of her a guard paced the hallway. Would her magic work for her? She wished with all of her heart. ' Please...don't see me.' She held her breath, not daring to breathe as he came nearer to her. And then...the guard suddenly stopped. He turned to the window, seemingly admiring the bright sky. Hey, she'd take it! Yugi bolted silently past him and using her memory she made it to the cache of weapons with no problem. Judai had shown her this place the day she got her dagger, and she always remembered it. She picked up the first dagger to touch her hands, not caring what it looked like. ' I'm getting the hell out of dodge. If these cowards are so scared of Heba, then I'll just deal with the bitch myself!' She mentally declared. ' I'm not staying here another minute! I'm hauling ass and going home!' Her hand touched a short sword, and she gripped her hand around the handle. It felt heavy, but not unbearably so. It was the perfect size for her. It felt good.

She strapped the dagger to her belt, then strapped the sword to her back and turned the belt so that the blade was hidden by her cloak. If she kept herself covered, no one would ever even know they was on her. Again, Judai's face came to her mind, and she tried her best not to feel guilty. Judai could forgive her, right? She couldn't help but feel like she was betraying his trust. And the thought of Syrus's face when he found out she was gone...Yugi tried not to imagine the sadness and uncertainty she was sure would follow that little boy once he knew she was gone. But if Judai followed her instructions, then Syrus would be okay until she came back. Maybe, once this whole mess was over, she could take him back to her time with her. ' Grandpa will absolutely love him, I know. He'd be okay with it.' She would have to ask Mahad about that later. Heck, maybe Joey could come with her too, if she wanted. She had toyed with the idea of telling Joey at least what she was going to do. The blonde was infinitely trustworthy, and she knew Joey would have her back no matter what. But on the other side of that coin, Joey might have volunteered to go with her, and if Heba was as dangerous and crazy as everyone said she was, then the LAST thing she wanted was her friend to get hurt. No, she was on her own.

Then, another face came into her mind; Atemu. His eyes gleaming with twisted delight as he ordered the dragon beaten. The creature's pitiful cries. The sound alone had broken her heart. She had always known the king was a psychotic bastard, but Jesus Christ! Just the mere memory of what he had done to that poor dragon set her blood on fire. And Aknaudin! That coward had chosen himself over his ka spirit! Although interactions between herself and her own kas had been brief, her connection to them wasn't any less. She couldn't fathom hurting any of them-even if it meant saving herself! She could never...! Then, Atemu's wicked laughter sounded in her ears, his eyes alight with malice as he punished his uncle and an innocent creature who was only guilty by association. ' If Atemu's smart, he won't show his face to me again...or I might just kill that son of a bitch for what he's done!' She breathed deeply to try and calm her growing anger. She needed to FOCUS now! Yugi ran from the room then, her invisibility seemingly strong. If she came near any servant or guard in the hall, they either looked away, or went in the opposite direction as if remembering they had something important to do. Good. Yugi reached the kitchens in record time, shoving what food she came across into a stray bag angrily. Bead, cheese, dates, apples, a small bag of dried beef...good enough she supposed. Her errand done she ran from the kitchens, through the palace and before she knew it, she was outside. Yugi briefly contemplated taking a horse. As quickly as the thought came, she dismissed it. She didn't know how to ride, and a palace horse gone missing was sure to raise the alarm that much sooner. No. She was seriously on her own. Yugi reached the gates, and to her luck it was open. Servants were passing in and out, merchants carrying wares for the Pharaoh were being escorted on to the palace grounds. Now, more than ever, she DID NOT WANT TO BE SEEN!

And just like before, no one made eye contact with her. No one paid her any mind. She didn't run. She didn't panic. She breathed deeply, willing herself calm as to not draw any attention to herself. Yugi lifted her chin and strode purposefully out of the palace grounds, past the servants, merchants and guards...and into the hustle and bustle of the city.

Not once did she look back.

The images faded from the mirror, and once again the royals were left to utter silence. Atemu released his magic, panting from what he had just seen. He had been given a view of Heba's light half that he had not expected. Although the two halves of Heba acted independently of one another, Atemu had believed that they were still one and the same. But this near-disturbing glimpse in to the light half's mind and soul threated to destroy that notion entirely. Perhaps Heba's light half was a reflection of what she was supposed to be-or rather, what she could have been had not her heart been taken by darkness. Just what WAS this being created by Heba? He honestly wasn't sure anymore. And looking around the room at his fellow Sennen wielders, he could tell their line of thinking was like his. Atemu felt his body run cold as her harsh thoughts and cruel memories of him replayed inside of his own mind. Was that truly how she saw him? And...why did the idea bother him so much? Karim cursed under his breath, gripping his Sennen Scales tightly.

" Tis our worst fear realized! Yugi is going to be captured by Heba and once she has her..." The threat did not need to be said. Heba would destroy her light to complete her powers and restore her soul. Yugi would fade from existence and Heba would be free to exact her vengeance as she had tried to do before.

" We cannot let this pass! We have to save her!" Judai broke in passionately.

" It is all because of you, Aknaudin! YOU are to blame for this doom!" Josephine snarled. The old priest balked, his golden eye shimmering angrily through his curtain of silvery hair.

" Watch your tongue, Harridan! You have failed at every attempt to thwart that witch. I only did what none of you dared! I taught that devious witch her place!"

" Father. Enough." Seth said. His tone was flat. His voice was cold. And for that moment, Aknaudin barely recognized his own son.

" Seth...?"

" I agree with you on the matter of Heba's rearing, Father. She has had too many liberties gifted her for far too long. She needed to be handled and your impulse to do so is understandable. However..." He turned to his father and stood at full height, regarding him with the strength of a proud warrior, which brought many in the room to a sense of unease to witness as the pupil was speaking out of turn to his master. " What you did was unforgivable! Claiming Atemu's power for your own was never your right! And because of it, your Ka was punished by the Pharoah, Heba's lighter half was injured and she has abandoned us and decided to go after her other self! What if Heba is able to claim her light half and regain control?! What then?! We will all be in that much more peril-and all because you were scared of a little girl!"

" This coming from the man who's been plotting her death since she showed her face..." Karim sneered, his hand tightening on his Sennen item. Seth scoffed openly at him.

" True. But unlike some, I have never pretended my intentions otherwise. All I have ever done was for my King and my family." Seth shot Aknaudin a scalding look from his icy blue eyes. " Not myself." And yet, even as he said these words, Seth felt somewhat hollow in his conviction. The thoughts and motives behind the light half's actions had forced him to re-evaluate everything he thought he knew about this so-called " Yugi" girl. Although she did seem to hold a hearty amount of hostility towards the king, could her actions be justifiably blamed? Even Seth had found himself horrified at his cousin's cruelty. A stomp on the ground broke through his thoughts as his father stormed forward to stand before him.

" Be silent!" The old man barked. A harsh slap resounded though the room and Seth's head snapped to the side, blood dribbling from his lip from where Aknaudin had backhanded him. The priest stood still, only turning his head as he leveled his gaze to the old man. The two remained still for a few heartbeats, even as the blood dripped down Seth's chin on to his pristine robes, he made no move to touch the wound. With a heavy sigh Shimon broke through the silence.

" That's quite enough from both of you. There is plenty of blame to go around." He said, his aged plum eyes sweeping each individual in the room, before finally-most pointedly-resting on the Pharaoh. " That of which matters not now. Now, there is only one recourse; We must bring Yugi back before Heba can touch her." Atemu nodded, rising from his throne.

" And it shall be so! Seth, Mahad, Shada, Honda, Chazithius and I shall go retrieve her henceforth! Judai, you shall act as my Steward in the palace until out return! Mana, Aknaudin, Shimon, Karim and Isis; The lot of you are to protect the palace until our return! So let it be written, so let it be done!"

How in the hell did these desert people do it?! Scorching in the day, arctic tundra at night. Yugi shivered as she pulled her cloak more securely around her. She tried to mentally convince herself that things weren't as bad as they seemed. All day she had wandered the streets, asking vague questions about Heba. She had heard she was a healer. Was she still practicing? How might she find her? She didn't know how much the general populace knew about her in the beginning. But as it turned out, what they DID know was very unnerving. The people who didn't know anything about her offered ersatz apologies and ushered her along. People who did know her thought she was Heba herself, playing pranks by pretending to not know herself. Sinking her proverbial claws in to this, Yugi claimed she was Heba's twin sister, who was looking for her. At this, many people openly hugged her tight, singing her " Sister" 's praises and telling her eagerly that she was rarely seen anymore, but when she was, she gave healings and blessings. She was always there to comfort the dead or the dying, and always with a goddess's smile. ' Geez. At this point, she'll be canonized as a saint in no time.' Yugi mentally grumbled. But eventually, she was told by a small group of women that Heba always seemed to be coming to or from the desert. She had been pointed in a general direction out of the kingdom, warned of bandits and thieves, and with that Yugi had set off with determination.

That was eleven hours ago.

Now...she was done. She was cold, she had already eaten the rations-if they could have been called that-she had brought with her. She had drunk water from the town well and now she would give anything to drown in it. Her feet were killing her, her legs felt like lead and her hips felt like they would dislocate at any moment from the constant movement. A couple of times she had stumbled. A couple more she thought about sitting down to rest. For just a little while. But the thought of losing Heba's trail, or Atemu and his goons finding her made her push her aching body to the point where she felt like giving up. For hours all she had seen was sand, sand, sun, sky, sand, a stray scorpion ( Which was kinda cool), a fucking big ass tarantula ( Ew!) and more sand. All around her there was nothing but silence. Not even the wind was blowing now. No crickets or cicadas to break the stillness of the night. It was actually amazing how quiet it all actually was. But it also reminded Yugi that out here, in the dead of night...she was all alone.

It was in this quiet stillness that Yugi finally broke.

She collapsed to her knees, sobbing like a child as hot tears flowed down her face. She wanted out. She wanted to go home. She wanted to laugh with Duke as he told his sassy jokes and flirted with every girl in sight. Thinking of the beautiful, scantily clad women of the palace Yugi knew Duke would be in paradise here. She wanted to play games with Bakura, maybe even indulge in a prank or two with him. She'd happily take the blame if they were caught if it meant being taken anywhere but here. And more than anything else in the entire world...she just wanted her grandpa. She wanted wake up from this nightmare to him holding her, making her feel safe as he told her it was all just a bad dream, and it was over now. She missed his warmth. She missed his wisdom. She missed him. Just the image of her grandpa's face in her mind brought forth a fresh wave of tears.

He was always so strong. He was the strongest old man in the world. He was smarter than any person alive. She could only hope to be as brave and strong as him. But was she? No. She'd gotten herself kidnapped to Egypt because of her damn curiosity over a fucking cup, pissed off a king who's only dream was to see her dead, abandoned a little boy who needed her, ran away from her friends and gotten herself lost in the damn desert on a ghost's rumor. ' Way to go, Yugi!' She thought bitterly. Sniffling she stood up and wiped her tears on the end of her cloak. She had to get ahold of herself. Crying would do her no favors. She couldn't forget what she was doing here in the first place. She was here to fight Heba. To kill the witch bitch herself so she could wake up from this nightmare and go home! Drawing in a shaky breath she clasped her hand around her grandfather's ring, the cool metal comforting in her hand. " Grandpa, help me." She whispered to the wind, knowing logically that there was no way he could hear her or hope to answer her prayers. In her heart, she silently sent him her love. It made her heart ache to think of Shimon, who looked so much like her grandfather it hurt. She had sea-sawed back and fourth many times between wanting to spend time with the old man, to avoiding him like the plague. Would he be ashamed of her now? She couldn't help but wonder.

A sudden rumbling in the distance had her sitting up straight, hastily wiping her eyes with the cloak as she stood up painfully. It was her worst nightmare. A heard of horses and a chariot were speeding towards her from the distance. There was nothing to shield her-no large rocks, a cave, a frigging sand hill, nada. All she could do was run. Yugi took off with a grunt of pain, jogging with all the strength left in her as she struggled to get away. It was the Pharaoh and his men, wasn't it?! Damn it, damn it, damn it! It was pathetic really, how quickly she was overrun. The horses and the men swarmed her nearly instantly. She stopped, breathing heavily as the men laughed and jeered at her. So the king's men were here to gloat, were they?! She looked up at the nearest rider...and froze. It wasn't the Pharaoh. It wasn't Mahad, or Seth or anyone she knew. The men before her were clothed in varying clothes, from decent to shabby to something she would see in a desert pirate movie. And the rider atop the chariot only regarded her silently, his hood masking his face. Didn't one of the villagers say something bout thieves and bandits before?

And before she could even contemplate her situation, with a snap of the charioteer's fingers, she was hauled up off her ass and thrown on to the back of a horse. " Hey!" She snapped. " Put me down now, or someone dies!" A roar of laughter met her ears. ' Just my luck.' She mentally grumbled. Reaching behind her, she swiped a dagger from the belt and stabbed the thigh of the thief holding her. She was instantly dropped and all laughter ceased. The hooded man stepped smoothly from the chariot and calmly walked forward. She stood up, gritting her teeth against the pain as she held the knife out, her stance ready. The Hooded man stood still, unmoving.

" C'mon, fuckers! Who want's some?!" She snapped. Intellectually she knew she had just made a move beyond stupid. But in that moment, she really, really couldn't care less. The bandits around her were quick to reply.

" Filthy Bitch!" The man she had stabbed howled, clutching his bleeding leg as another man heled to steady him.

" Witch!"

" Little Demon!"

" Clever little whore, aren't you?" Someone sneered. After years of bullying, these comments hardly affected her. But somehow her focus was entirely on who seemed to be the leader. Maybe because he was covered in shadows, with only the light of the desert moon behind him. Maybe because he was the only one not currently yelling obscenities at her. Maybe because he wasn't staying anything at all. Just looking at her as intently as she was looking at him. Whatever it was, she couldn't help but stare at him. He raised his hand, halting all noise. He suddenly thrust his hand out and a wave of pure energy washed over her. Suddenly, towering before her was a large demon. What else was she supposed to call it? The creature looked like a man from the waist up, with winged ears and a gleaming sharp horn on his head. But from the waist down, was a snake's body, complete with a hissing serpent ending from his tail. Both man and snake were covered in gleaming pearlescent scales. It looked both terrifying and yet oddly fascinating.

Quick as a lightning bolt, the snake man moved, darting forward to wrap his tail around her. Her arms and legs were instantly pinned, the dagger strapped to her side and with no way for her to use it anymore. And then he squeezed. Yugi clenched her teeth, struggling uselessly she knew, but still struggling to free herself from the demon's hold. The air rushed out of her body. Her ribs felt like they were gonna crack! She couldn't breathe...! As her vision went dark the last thing she saw was the leader of the thieves sliding back in to his chariot as if nothing was going on.

And then, her vision went black.

She had no sense of time where she was. The darkness was oddly comforting somehow, as if blocking out everything wrong. Was there anything wrong? She couldn't tell. Yugi swore she had been doing something before. Looking for someone? Was someone looking for her? For the life of her she couldn't remember. All she could do was sleep. The world around her began to move-no, shake. Was the ground shaking? Was she shaking? Why would she be shaking? Was she afraid? Of what? An image floated far out of reach in the darkness. Something red? Then she saw it; A young woman coated in blood. It was her! No...HEBA! A rush of clarity flooded her veins as she remembered her mission. Remembered who she was hunting. Yugi awoke with a gasp, blinking rapidly to clear her head. It was so hard to focus. She was in an underground cavern, if the rocks overhead were anything to go by. Her hands were bound behind her and to her irritation, she could tell her sword and dagger were gone. A dirty looking young man was kneeling over her, his rough hand shaking her shoulder harshly.

" Oi! Wake up, harlot! You hear me?!" He yelled. Yugi winced in both pain and disgust as his unwashed scent hit her nostrils.

" Yeah, I hear you." She said, her throat hoarse from unuse. She sat up and leaned away from the man and made a disgusted face. " I can smell you, too." The bandit flushed in anger and jerked her to her feet. Yugi grit her teeth to keep herself from crying out. The last thing she wanted to do was show weakness.

" Got a smart mouth, have you? Let's see how brave you are then." He sneered. Yugi had half a mind to fight, but knew it was impossible. With her hands tied and her weapons gone, this was SERIOUSLY not her day! Not to mention the toll her little journey had taken on her body. She was sore everywhere! Yugi wasn't sure she could lift her sword even if she did have it! Maybe she could bite out his throat if he got close enough to her? The thought disgusted her, but what else could she do? Should she call her own Ka monsters? Why didn't they appear now? Like the last time she was in trouble? The bandit towed her along, the men they passed whistling and cat-calling her on the way-many even openly asking how much pay she would she accept for sex. She silently scowled at them all. A harsh shove sent her to her knees, and Yugi shot her head up to the man who had pushed her. " Bow down, Missy! You're in the presence of our king!" The man snapped. As one the men in the room went silent, all of them bowing their heads in reverent respect. It was clear they were loyal to him, and it must have been the king who used his power on her. Just who was this man? Yugi turned away from the thug to look at the man they called " King." The king of thieves.

The thief king sat on a vas assortment of red and gold velvet cushions as if it were his throne; one leg propped over the other as he cradled his cheek to his knuckles. His black eyes sparked with interest as she came into his view. " Well, well, well...what do we have here?" He purred, his eyes raking over her form. Yugi however, could do nothing but stare back as her heart thudded painfully in her chest. Messy, choppy white hair fell in a sort of arranged disarray around his face and shoulders. Black eyes peered out at her from a hauntingly familiar face. A wicked-looking scar ran down his cheek, yet it did nothing to mar his features. Rather, it made him all the more dangerously attractive. His rippled, muscular skin was tanned deeply by the sun, a red robe thrown carelessly about his body which barely concealed him past his black shenti. Gold arm-bands adorned his wrists and a simple gold collar hung round his throat. And strapped to his hips were her dagger and sword. Yes, this man was different to the one her heart remembered so well, but his face-his voice-all brought a whispered name to her lips that she was helpless to stop.

" Bakura...?"

AAAAH! It's our Boy Bakura!
