"What is it about her that you just can't let go of?"
Kara drops her head into her hands, completely exhausted by this line of questioning and disappointed that this is where she is; once again being questioned by her sister because Alex doesn't trust her judgement.
"How many times do I have to tell you that Lena isn't like Lex or the other Luthors? She's different and I wish you would just listen to me for once instead of questioning every choice I make." Kara retorts, her anger and fatigue building and mixing together, her mind having a million points to make but her body too tired to argue about this.
It's clear that Alex doesn't have the same issue, her stance carefully selected, ready for a fight. "You know that I hate it when you answer my question with another question." It's too hard to resist the urge to roll her eyes, so Kara gives in, letting that speak for her. Alex doesn't take too fondly to that as a response, crossing her arms and taking on a sharp tone. "Kara, I'm trying to have a serious talk here."
"And if you want this talk to work out then you need to stop talking to me like you're my commanding officer, you're my sister and you need to act like it instead of trying to dictate what my relationships look like and who they're with."
Alex softens by the tiniest amount, so much so that Kara can barely see it and only because she knows Alex well enough to see the minute change in her posture. "So you admit that you and Lena have a relationship?"
"Of sorts, yes. We have spent a lot of time together through interviews and stuff and now we're getting more comfortable and spending some more time doing nonwork related things, so I guess you could say that we're friends." Kara explains, her voice monotone for the most part, even as she rambles.
Finally, Alex sits next to her on the couch, letting go of her DEO agent persona. "You know I just worry about you."
"Well, when you treat me like one of your rookies from work, it makes me want to throw you into the sun so please just be my sister instead."
"Ok, sister mode activated, so tell me what it is about Lena that makes you want to be her friend." Alex speaks softly, careful not to put Kara on edge and make her clam up.
With a huff, Kara responds, "It's funny how your sister question is the same as your DEO agent question."
"I used a different tone, that counts for something."
"Fine, I'll tell you."
Alex shifts to face Kara the best she can, heaving one of her legs up onto the couch cushion so she can twist her body. "Ok, spill."
Kara shrugs, finding somewhere to start. "I like being around Lena, she's a good person."
"That's it?"
"Obviously there's more, you just have to let me think a second." She pauses, looking up at the ceiling briefly as she racks her brain for the right words. "There's a lot to say but not enough words to express what I really want to say."
To her credit, Alex doesn't push or prod, just sits there patiently waiting for Kara to figure out what she wants to tell her.
"Lena always remembers when I'm going to stop by and orders the best foods, usually fancy dishes that she thinks I'll like that she knows I haven't tried before, and she'll have a cup of coffee waiting for me if I'm in for an early interview. She doesn't push me, not in the ways I don't want to be, but she still manages to encourage me to be better, to see the world from a different perspective."
The indecision is written across Alex's face with what may as well be a permanent marker. She can't decide if she should press Kara for more answers or to let her be and just stay quiet to give Kara a real chance to talk.
The decision is made for her when Kara continues before she has a chance to intervene, Kara not caring about giving her a chance to respond to her first statement. "She earned my trust when she listened and understood me when I told her I disagreed with her alien detection device, and she was willing to listen and admit she was wrong and hadn't fully thought the implications through.
"She has an open mind and a good heart, she puts millions into charities to help people and I know for a fact that if I was to call her right now and very vaguely say that I need her help, she would be here within the hour."
Kara couldn't help getting louder and louder as she ticks things off her mental list of talking about how great Lena is and it leaves Alex reeling, unable to form words for the minute.
"Do you believe that?"
"Of course I believe that, Alex." Kara sighs.
Alex nods, her mouth twisting to the side while she debates on doing what she's about to do. "Then call her and tell her you need help, if she shows within the hour then I will get off your back and officially agree to be nice and work with her on whatever comes up next."
Kara looks like she's about to argue but then thinks better of it, deciding that Alex's suggestion will definitely work out in her favour so she may as well go along with it and then apologise to Lena for wasting her time later on. "Ok."
To be completely honest, Alex wasn't expecting Kara to actually go along with it and is pleasantly surprised that she isn't having to fight Kara over this because her sister is already dialling Lena's number and listening as the call is picked up within a few rings.
"Hey Lena, I'm really sorry to bother you this late, I just really need your help with something, and I can't explain it now, but I just need you to come and help me out here if you have time."
Alex tries to listen to Lena's response but can't really tell what she's saying.
"I'm at my place now with Alex, please don't drive recklessly. Alright, see you soon." Kara hangs up the phone and then scrolls down her contact list to call another number.
Now Alex is just confused, right up until she hears Kara ordering an obscene amount of pizzas. She's still looking at her with a look that says 'really?' on her face when the phone is tossed aside.
"What? If you're making me drag Lena all the way out here for nothing then I'm at least ordering her apology pizza…it comes with extra cheese too."
"I'm not saying anything."
"Good."
Alex isn't expecting Lena to actually follow through. She's met the woman a handful of times and she has always seemed somewhat pleasant, if a bit prickly, but she's still a Luthor and can't really care for Kara the way her little sister seems to think she does.
That's why her mouth hangs open so wide that her chin is resting on the floor when there is a frantic knocking on Kara's door less than thirty minutes later.
Kara pulls the door open and there stands Lena Luthor, hands wringing in front of her and anxious energy radiating off her in waves until she sees Kara standing there in one piece and then it all comes to a sudden halt because then Kara is in Lena's arms, and the relief on Lena's face is so sincere that Alex can't deny that it's real.
Lena leans back, taking Kara's shoulders in her hands to hold her far enough away to double check that she has no physical injuries. "Kara, what's going on? Are you alright?" The words are rushed and there is an unease to the way she says them that makes both Kara and Alex feel guilty for dragging her over here like this.
"I'm sorry to make you come running like this, Lena. Nothing bad is going on and I'm afraid that I just wasted your time to prove a point." Kara ducks her head like a child about to be scolded.
Lena just looks tired and a little bit befuddled. "I don't understand."
Alex decides to bite the bullet and come clean. "I needed to see for myself that you are actually a decent person and that you care for my sister so I told Kara that if you came within the hour than I would trust her opinion of you and that also entails trusting you, and after that display I can safely say that I genuinely do trust you – to look after my sister at least, I can see that you do care about her."
"Of course I care about Kara, she's my friend and you owe me a strong glass of something for the heart attack you gave me." Lena pulls out one of the stools by the bar and takes a seat, hanging her purse on the back corner of it.
Alex nods her head in approval and gets up to route in Kara's cupboards for the bottle of scotch she has hidden in there. "This is my good stuff, so you better be grateful because I know it won't be as good as that fancy stuff I know you rich folk have."
"I will even say thank you." Lena smirks at her and takes the offered glass, downing it in one go then passing it back to Alex again, shaking it to show she wants a refill. "I'm not a lightweight, keep 'em coming, agent."
"I thought you said you would thank me."
"Only when you pour me a proper drink."
Lena does thank her after the next glass since Alex poured her a double and just as Lena is about to request another Kara takes the glass away. "No more, go sit on the couch, the pair of you. Pizza will be here soon."
Neither woman questions her so they go and take a seat, Alex deciding on one of the chairs instead so she can get a good look at Lena without it being obvious that she's watching her.
"You ordered pizza, Kara?" Lena asks as she sinks into the soft cushions of the well worn couch.
Kara joins them just a minute behind them both, three cans of soda in hand. "Yep, it's an apology pizza for scaring you."
"Did you order extra cheese?"
"Obviously." Kara states as she takes a seat next to Lena. "This isn't amateur hour."
They fall into a comfortable silence, Alex flipping through Netflix to find something to watch and eventually settling on The Walking Dead, not bothering to as the other two if they are alright with the pick.
It's not a problem for Lena, she doesn't mind those kinds of shows other than the fake science they often include but Kara, on the other hand, doesn't like them much at all. She often finds them way too gory, and they have too many moments that give her anxiety, so she doesn't often watch them.
She doesn't want to make a fuss and embarrass herself in front of Lena though and she can feel it in her heart that Alex was betting on that to be able to put it on.
Kara gets through the first half of the first episode alright before the pizza arrives, so she has something else to pay attention to. Rather than staring at the screen she focuses on the pizza, savouring each bite and trying her best not to look at the screen.
It only lasts so long though because she made her way through those pizzas like a champ and now has to either watch it or sit there trying to block it out and since she isn't great at blocking it out, she watches it, a cushion held to her chest to protect her from the zombies.
There is one particular moment that comes right at the start of the second episode that makes her jump with fright and Lena can't hold back her laugh when she feels the jolt from bedside her. "Who would've thought that Supergirl is afraid of a simple show about zombies?"
Both Kara and Alex freeze. "You know."
"Well, yeah. It's kind of obvious…no offense." Lena says it casually with a shrug to drive the point home.
Alex gives Kara a pointed look that says, 'I told you so', and then turns her attention back to Lena. "You just scored yourself a hot date with a pile of NDAs in the morning, congratulations."
The groan Lena lets out falls right in time with the moaning of a zombie on screen, drowning out her display of dismay.
