Recovery Girl walked inside battle center A, her walking stick in the shape of a syringe tapped on the pavement below. She feels the cold air rushing around her as she shivers at the sudden temperature change.
She got closer to the center of where it came from, the ice crept up buildings and solidified the streets, paving them in frost.
'Did someone overuse their Quirk again? Yagi told me about the students he'd been training. That man is always making them go too far. I hope it's not too much damage.'
Recovery Girl rounds the corner and sees the result of Ayaka's permafreeze. A statue crumbled from the weight bearing down. It cracked and creaked as bits of broken ice fell from the sky.
A crowd formed in front of the massive zero pointer being frozen. Some caught in the zone could barely stand straight from trying to balance on the ice. Though what caught Recovery Girl's attention was a girl she recognizes being helped up by a boy with blonde spiky hair right on the street.
"Good work, good work. Everyone, help yourselves to some gummies." She says to the other participants.
Recovery Girl then sees Katsuki and Ayaka on the ground with Katsuki having a blank stare. "What happened to her? Did she receive backlash from her Quirk?"
Katsuki didn't reply, he got up and started wandering to the exit. He furrows his brows unsure of what just happened or why he helped up Ayaka. He took one look behind him and saw Recovery Girl observing Ayaka's state.
"Tch."
He pockets his hands in his pants as he ignores the stares he was getting from the people around him. He would have yelled at them by now but he needed time to think.
Recovery Girl placed down her cane and lifts her hands to Ayaka's cheeks. 'Not cold?' She thought. She had heard about Ayaka's certain specialty from other ice Quirks Recovery Girl worked with, she had some doubts but now she confirmed it for herself. Even when an entire area was covered in ice, Ayaka's body didn't drop in temperature at all. 'It was almost like her ice resistance from her quirk is an immunity instead', Recovery Girl guessed.
Next, she checks her pulse, other than a heightened heartbeat from the adrenaline of fighting, it seemed normal for the time so Recovery Girl determined it was an energy problem. 'Rest should be her priority, other than that everything else was good.'
"I'll call in someone to take you. I'll have to check up on the other battle centers. Is anyone else injured?" She calls out.
A few people come forward with minor bruises, fatigue, and some nicks and wounds present. She made quick work of taking care of them before proceeding further.
Back in the observation room, a conversation broke out after seeing the events unfold. The teachers acting as judges for the exam were debating on the actions of one specific boy.
"He clearly has no control over his quirk, I don't think he deserves that high a score in rescue. If this were a real situation there would only be one chance he could save someone before becoming dead weight. Not something you would want to be a hero."
Ectoplasm gave his own thoughts. "Now now, Eraserhead. We must give him credit. Despite having no points and being scared for most of the time allotted, he was brave enough to do the right thing."
"Still, if I were you I'd give him a 3, not a 10."
Nezu chuckles. "It's the judge's decision for now. We don't want you voting 0s every time or we won't have students to admit. Let's move on to the next two."
An image flashes on the display, the next one they would judge on their actions was Kamisato Ayaka and Bakugo Katsuki. Everyone nodded, they understood how many points they had gained from both villain points and rescue points.
Katsuki and Ayaka were the ones who reached a tie for the highest villain points gained.
"Kamisato Ayaka and Bakugo Katsuki, 85 Villain points." Nezu announced.
Vlad King spoke as the image flashed in front. "Bakugo was very impressive, very fast at reacting to situations, used his vertical speed to observe, he was calm, finally he was powerful."
Eraserhead scoffed, "Calm until he showed hostility to Kamisato. I admit his quirk is powerful but-" He pulled up recommendations from Aldera Junior high. "-he's not the best quality in attitude. I'm guessing from his remarks during the exam and his high self-worth, he got a lot of praise and that led him to be a subpar teammate."
"You're looking at negatives again Eraser. Bakugo might not be in the best in terms of communication but he has an excellent mind for strategy and competence. He has shown in his fights that he could quickly think on his feet to deal with a threat fast." Ectoplasm defended Katsuki.
Eraserhead grunted. "He can fight but he can't save, for now at least. Until the last moment, he was purely focused on the Villain Bots, not even giving a glance at the other exam takers. That's not what a Hero should be, then again it is our job to fix that."
After the talk, everyone agreed to give him no points for rescue. They all still had high hopes they could change him but it would be tough.
The image then changes to Kamisato Ayaka.
Vlad King announced from nearby, "Kamisato is the same in terms of combat potential, her ice Quirk is incredibly powerful, forming ice pillars to go up buildings to observe and could discern where Villain Bots were headed, and her ability to seek out Villains and dispatch them with her sword made sure she would get an impressive Villain score."
He continued. "Unlike Bakugo she had moments where she rescued someone, there was her most impressive instant when she saved Bakugo despite his strained attitude to her. Although we could argue it was her fault for panicking and freezing the area, Bakugo could be blamed equally when he prioritized battling the zero pointer by himself instead of following Kamisato's suggestion."
They all nodded and hummed in agreement. It was hard to deny that she did everything they would've done in a real-life situation. Even if they wanted to downplay their votes, the feats that Izuku and Ayaka are similar so it warranted scores that would almost trump All Might's own exam score back when he was in UA as a student, it was incredibly close too.
"She is the epitome of what a Hero should be. Should we put it to a vote?"
Meanwhile…
Ayaka slowly opened her eyes, what was once the blue sky was replaced by the white ceiling of a room. She sat up and saw the medicinal posters scattered on the walls. On her sides were the curtains pulled back and there she saw Recovery Girl tapping away at her computer.
"Ah, you're awake. Be glad missy, your Quirk is giving you an impressive degree of cold resistance. I have to check your data on the Quirk registry to know more about your condition, now that you're awake I can ask permission from you."
Ayaka stiffened. A quirk was supposed to be registered the moment a Quirk manifested but she wasn't sure if she had a registry in the first place. "Unfortunately, I don't have my Quirk registered. I didn't get the chance to do so."
That seemed to get a response from Recovery Girl. "You haven't done so yet? Yagi should've checked if you got one before sending you here."
"Am I in trouble?" Ayaka asks.
"Why would you be? Quirk registries can get missed, it's rare but people even in their adult life would miss registering their Quirks. Either because they couldn't figure it out until then or they physically are unable to. You can get yours if you get the time."
Ayaka looked around the room before moving away the sheets over her and getting up. She glanced at the clock above the door and saw the time. '2:00? So it's been about 2 hours since the test should've ended.'
"I'm sorry for taking up your precious time Recovery Girl. Am I allowed to leave? I have to get back to my friend."
"Mhm, here have some gummies on your way out. I know you have exhaustion as your only drawback but if problems arise from you using so much ice at once, you know where to go. I'm not in this clinic often since I only operate here during the entrance exams but if you ever go to UA then I'll be on the ground floor. Just don't arrive beaten and unconscious so often, okay?"
"Yes, Recovery Girl. Thank you for taking care of me all this time."
She got out of the room and saw the empty halls. It was noon so everyone would be finished the test already. All that was left was for her to head home but she wanted to meet up with Izuku as they planned.
"Oi."
She turned around to see Katsuki leaning on the wall with his eyes locked onto hers. He huffs and gets closer to Ayaka questioning his presence. "Yes?"
"I don't owe you anything. Both you nor Deku didn't do anything for me, got that? I won't let you both one-up me anymore-" he clenches his fist until his knuckles turned white. "-don't you dare think you're ahead. I'll beat you all you hear me!"
Ayaka slowly blinked, perplexed at what she was supposed to respond with. "Then let's do our best. Until then, I hope I can understand you better."
"Hmph."
Ayaka looked at Katsuki walking away with his hands in his pockets. She thought about the exchange, 'Did he go out of his way to tell me that?'
She didn't know for sure but it was a small step. Ayaka headed for the entrance of the building and saw Izuku looking down in shame as he sat at the bottom of the stairs.
"Midoriya? Are you all right?"
Midoriya quickly wipes away his face, unseen by Ayaka as he turns to meet Ayaka. "Kamisato! You're here! I was so worried when I heard you collapsed, is it true you froze the zero pointer?"
She nodded. "I think so, everything that moment was a blur since I got exhausted after pushing so much ice out in a single moment, I think I did fine in the exam. How about you?"
"Ahaha, I... did sort of… good." he stuttered out.
Ayaka claps her hands together. "That's great! I can't wait until we get our results. It should be in a week, right? Do you have anything planned?"
"Huh? Uh yes, the result should be in a week… I don't know if I have anything planned."
Ayaka made her way down and sits beside Izuku. "You are welcome to join me tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? What do you have planned?"
"I have just been notified of my advanced rent running slim, so after next month I have to restart paying. I intend on going to the mall, I saw an opening for several positions in the service industry."
'Though I don't know how I got any advance payments. It must be something related to how I got here in the first place.' Ayaka thought to herself.
Izuku looks up from his deflated state. "Oh! Yeah, we can do that. Something to keep our minds off the results, right?"
"Of course, that could take the nerve out of our minds." Ayaka stood up and offered her hand to Izuku, "Let's go, we can walk while we talk about what we think of the exam. It was a surprise for sure but I saw some great Quirks while I was there."
Izuku accepted the gesture and went on their way. Both of them wandered around after the exam, with Izuku trying not to show his disappointment with himself.
Ayaka was deeply interested in Quirks, much like Izuku. "-there was one where his head could pop out these adhesive-, ...Midoriya?"
As they walked along the pavement Ayaka found the lack of response. Izuku blankly stared at the floor, letting his legs carry him forward without thinking much.
"Oof!"
He almost hits a lampost directly in front of him. It could've ended with him getting home with a bruised nose and an embarrassing story to tell his mom.
Thankfully, Ayaka stopped him by grabbing onto the back of his collar. "Sorry, you were about to hit the street lamp. Are you alright? …Was I talking too much?"
Izuku paused, feeling a soft wind pushing around him. Determined, he promised that they would both be working toward UA, which included sharing his apparent failure.
"No! No, sorry it's just that I think… I… disappointed… All Might."
"Why would he ever be? All Might picked you to be his successor did he not? The moment he decided to train you and spend 10 months watching over you, he already saw something in you."
Izuku's eyes started to water. All Might told him not to be a crybaby yet here he was doing it again. "To tell you the truth… I didn't get any Villain points…"
Ayaka widened her eyes. "Oh… Sorry I didn't realize it was that serious. I didn't mean to bring it up at a bad time."
Izuku awkwardly shuffles in place. "You mean well, Kamisato. If only I used my Quirk on the Villain Bots than just destroying that zero pointer. Then again, that nice girl would've been crushed."
"The nice girl? Do you mean the one that saved you from tripping earlier this morning? Also, I didn't know you took out the zero pointer too."
"That's right, my body just… moved, like it was my only option. Seeing her struggling under all that rubble, I couldn't just watch. I had to do something... If only I could do the same for the exam itself."
"Midoriya, don't think that saving someone was a mistake. If UA does train heroes as they say, then having you be rejected would be a direct opposition to what being a hero is. Look, All Might would still be proud of you Midoriya a life saved is always something to hold yourself up with."
Ayaka brought her hand up and wipes away tears slowly leaking out and going down Izuku's cheek. "Okay?"
"Yeah… I guess you're right."
"My home is close by, see you tomorrow Midoriya. Don't let failure get to you, there's always next time. I'll be waiting, hopefully, we'll get in together." They both waved goodbye as they went their separate ways.
Ayaka arrived back at her apartment complex, she passed the lobby and greeted the receptionist, and went for the elevator while waiting for it to go up.
Ayaka reached her floor and went straight for her room. After entering she switched into more casual home clothes and plopped on the soft comfortable bed. She was about to nap, a pleasure that she couldn't enjoy back in Inazuma since she'd be working all day round.
She felt her eyelids become heavy, her rest from being unconscious didn't seem to dim her exhaustion nor could she refute her comfortable bed tempting her to sleep.
A knock suddenly arrives minutes after she had closed her eyes. "Hello? We have a package for you."
Ayaka straightens herself from her momentary slumber and gets up to open the door to answer a man standing outside. "Sorry, I don't think you have the right room. I am not expecting anything of the sort," she told him.
The man looks on with confusion. "The address lines up, see?" he hands over the package, and right on the delivery address was her room, and right below it was something eye-opening.
'Dated… a week ago- no, it's been scribbled out. 10 months ago?… that's-'
"Still, I don't recall anyone having a reason to send me something. Are there names of who sent it and who's supposed to receive it?"
The man takes back the package and points at the label. "Well, this address is the one listed here. We don't know the sender, and the recipient's name is not taken but what matters is the address listed. We already checked if it was anything suspicious but it's just a trinket of some sort."
"A trinket? What do you mean?"
"It looks like a glass orb-thing surrounded by a metal frame with a symbol on it. Doesn't look familiar though. Anyways, just sign here." he took out a pen and handed it over while he brought out his device and presented it in front of Ayaka.
'Orb surrounded by a metal frame?' she questioned.
Ayaka took the package and signed the device held by the man, confirming the package was being dropped off. After a short thanks and goodbye, Ayaka was curious as to what the man meant. She was suspicious of it but since the post office already checked it, she wasn't dissuaded from at least taking a peek.
She went inside and hopped onto her bed and slowly opened the packaging.
It was a wooden box, nothing of note was really on the surface aside from wear and tear. It meant someone had been using it as ordinary everyday storage. Ayaka took it out of the wrapping and laid it on her bed.
She unlocks the latch holding the box close and slowly opens it.
"This is?!"
She almost recoils to the wall after realizing what it was. It only took her a single glance to see what was actually inside.
"No... how is this here?"
On the device was a symbol. A symbol that Ayaka knew well from her life in Teyvat, the symbol of Anemo, one of the seven elements.
Although this was no Vision. It was something else entirely, a device meant for those who wanted a Vision but could not receive favor from the Gods. A manufactured ability that came from the remnants of ancient power.
"... A Delusion."
