The primary way to sum up the issue with Ann's character writing is that she's the perfect embodiment of a fictional character who exists in that toxic dichotomy, which mostly serves unattractive, socially stunted men to feel good about themselves; that entire culture of making good-looking women your feel good puppets, whether you're doing that intentionally or not.
Because you want everything at once.
You want to be able to look at women who are good-looking, you want those good-looking women to accept you, and you want the woman to appease the insecurity you've got inside you. The result that comes from this, especially when you get fictional stories and character formed from this, is a weird structural system, by which men (and also women too-there's a lot of bitter females who play into this just as much) want good-looking women to exist to be drooled over and incredibly sexualised, in an incredibly demeaning way, while simultaneously being characters who are given an artificial coat of "I'm a strong but kind woman" paint, so that men can thereby justify being able to control them however they want for whatever emotions they happen to require in any given moment. And so if a man, or woman, happens to be unattractive, they can be like "oh it's okay, the hot girl would love me", and it gets to the point of down and out abusive thought.
Ann's canonical character is heavily reliant on this entire system, and it's so fucking glaringly behind why Ann has such a toxic fanbase. And yet all the idiots in this fandom can't seem to notice the fact.
Everything about Ann was written under this whole merit.
She eats a lot of sweets and desserts, and generally is presented as a bit of a glutton. Oh, but it's okay, it doesn't affect her weight, or her hot body ever so don't worry. But, you know, it's still in there, so...feel good about eating lots, fatty!
Like, I'm re-playing Strikers, and holy fucking shit, the amount of times they do this is unreal (to be fair, the talk about food a LOT in that whole game, due to being a road-trip story and everything, but still). They'll just vague the fact that Ann is worried about calories whenever she eats a lot, but that's it. Probably the most glaring example of this that just stands out a LOT though was Ann's first social event in P5D, where this whole "Ann ate a fuck ton of food and is vaguely worried now, but eh" is the entire topic of the event; it stands out especially as it's the first one, and like with everything in P5D it's particularly exaggerated, even by Persona 5 standards. Like, I don't WANT her to become fat, obviously; what I WANT is for them to not depict this whole "I eat whatever I want, but I still remain hot!" shit in the first place. It's literally only in there so they can have their hot girl to drool over, while also simultaneously having the hot girl present some stupid "hey, eat lots, and don't worry about your look!" energy, so that insecure players feel good about themselves.
It's that sort of thing I'm talking about. Like, the amount of times I've had people bring up Ann's eating shtick is unreal, and that's exactly what I'm talking about in the first place. It's made to be this way on purpose so that if you bring up any notion of Ann would be put off by ugly fucking males, they can be like "yeah, but, like, Ann eats like a glutton and doesn't give a shit about how it affects her body so lmao on you, she would not care about that".
This is obvious, by the fact that, like I said, Ann's entire character feels like it's centralised around that whole dichotomy regarding being able to be abused and drooled over for looking good, while simultaneously giving out a fuck ton of "yay I'm a nice girl, you're all wonderful people, yay, don't bully people! I love everyone!" energy; and all of it being vaguely justified by the notion that Ann has the sexual/emotional control (which she doesn't), and therefore this somehow justifies you being able to drool over how hot she is, while simultaneously expecting her character to give you some sort of peace of mind over being an ugly fucking male/female swine. Which just plays into that patronising abusive nonsense that good-looking women have to fucking go through every goddamn day, where they're all being treated like the bitches of unattractive men, while being kidded into thinking they have "freedom" or "dominance".
That's exactly why her character draws so much damn incel toxicity in towards her.
It's so fucking OBVIOUS how purposefully this was done with Ann, and it's so fucking just...augh, every time I get reminded of how toxically "nice feel good energy sexy doll" Ann's character is in this way it just pisses me the fuck off. I fucking love Ann so much. I hate what they did to her.
Just, if only they had shown her with more fucking direct pride over her appearance, instead of vaguing it all the time-More assertiveness about the weaponization of her looks, instead of vaguing it all the damn time...
Just, I'm sorry, but why is it any fucking wonder why I loathe ugly people, when this is the world they've decided to form? I don't care how insane it makes me sound, they just deserve to fucking suffer for this. For everything they've done. They've hurt me, and my Ann, and too many people. ALL ugly people, men AND women, are a part of the problem. I don't give a shit if you think you're fucking not, because you fucking are. You contribute to it, all of you, with your stupid, putrid fucking existences.
