In My Mind's Eye

I stand in the sun's rays, thinking of you:

Your charming smile, your gentle eyes.

You once told me that the sunshine was a message from God,

telling us to smile and be happy.

How can I smile now?

Every day, I remember you:

Your kindness, your compassion.

You once gave me a plastic flower.

I asked why, and you replied:

'Real flowers bloom, then die;

This flower has always been this way,

and will always remain this way.

An everlasting beauty, and everlasting love.'

You had a nice way of explaining things.

I will always think of you:

Your courage, your strength.

Every single conversation we had,

will forever be in my heart.

Every single attribute you displayed,

I will hold in my mind's eye.

Your memory will never die.

Since we were small, you said you liked my eyes,

you said it matched my auburn hair.

I always laughed and said:

'Your brown matches too.'

One day, you kissed me.

You said you'd never leave me,

you'd always be there when I needed you.

I believed you.

I need to hold you now,

I need to see you now,

but you will not come.

The evidence lays here, in front of me.

Your tombstone.
