Wedding Bells

Wedding Bells

What a joyous day to be alive.

It was a beautiful day in Conde Petie, even more so than usual. The sun shone brightly on the mountain town, it's gleaming rays filling the halls with priceless golden beauty. The air was pleasantly warm, the birds sang, and even the wind seemed to carry a melody of it's own. All in all, it was a truly marvelous day.

It was also the perfect day for a wedding. The wedding, however....that was not so perfect....

------------------------------

Why am I doing this?

Vivi wondered this not for the first time as the dwarven priest recited the vows of the sacred ceremony that would join him and Quina in matrimony. How did I let Zidane talk me into this? Of all the things I imagined might happen on our journey together....this was definitely not one of them.

That was an understatement. Marriage was not something the little black mage often thought about. In fact, he never thought about it at all. He knew what it was, of course, but it had never occurred to him that it'd be something he'd do himself. He didn't even think about girls, a fact that Zidane had lightly teased him about back in Dali. Even so, it was a far leap from thinking a girl was pretty to joining himself to her in marriage.

And frankly, he didn't even know if the person standing beside him was even female.

Vivi glanced at Quina for a brief second. S/he was silent as well, neither of them having said a word since the ceremony began. The small mage couldn't help but wonder what was going through his/her mind.

It's not that Quina's not a nice person....and I know this is the only way to get past the village....I just don't know if I can make a commitment like this, to someone so....ambiguous. I know Garnet said that she and Zidane are only married while they're here, which I guess also applies to Quina and I, but it still seems so extreme to do something so....major.

Have the strength to carry ye through the trials....

Father Heavenguard droned on as Vivi fidgeted where he stood. This was all so odd to him....he still couldn't believe he was actually going through with it. It almost seemed a bit....unreal.

This is all so unbelievable....I feel so awkward and strange. I almost wish I didn't have to do this. But....I do. We have to get past the village, and I can't let Zidane down by not going along. And there are things I have to find out for myself, as well. Plus, I wouldn't want to hurt Quina's feelings by backing out now. So....I'll stay. I'll do it.

As the ceremony at last drew to a close, the dwarves standing behind the priest rang the wedding bells to signify the joining of the black mage and the Qu in marriage. Before Vivi could think of what to do or say, Quina turned to him and said the last thing he'd expected to hear out of the Qu's mouth.

I....so happy....

It took Vivi a second to react, to take in what he'd just heard. Then he stammered out the only reply he could think of that wouldn't injure Quina's feelings.

M-Me too....

All in all, it was the strangest wedding the people of Conde Petie had ever seen, and quite likely the strangest they ever would see.
