The Vampire & His Slayer
A/N:- Usual disclaimers apply
They kissed a while longer, then feeling the ache in his heart, Spike pulled away. He cradled her chin in his hand and ran the pad of his thumb over her bottom lip, following its path with his eyes,
"You're a wonderfull woman, Slayer, but you deserve so much more than I can give you."
His voice was no more than a forlorn whisper, and beneath his hard shell, Spike felt his heart breaking.
He saw the tears welling in her eyes and watched with heartfelt sorrow as they fell.
Nothing more needed to be said.
Neither could have what they wanted.
Nothing more could be done.
The vampire stood and went to leave through her bedroom window, the way Angel had done years before. He opened the window and cast his eyes over the dimly lit street before beginning to climb out.
"Spike?"
He paused. Her voice was quiet and slightly hoarse from the tears she was trying so hard to hold back.
"Yes, Pet?"
He didn't want her to say it - both of them knew this would never work. He cursed himself for letting it happen in the first place. He was breaking her heart, just like Angel and Riley had done before him.
"I love you."
Outwardly, Spike sighed deeply. Inwardly, he broke down. He heard the bed springs shift as she stood up and walked over to him.
He couldn't turn around.
He couldn't face her.
"Love you too, Pet."
Before she could do anything else, the vampire had leapt frommher window and landed on his feet in the front yard.
She watched as he stopped at the front gates to light a cigarette and without looking back, Spike returned to his crypt, feeling worse than he'd ever done before.
He sat on the tomb, staring at his cell phone.
No.
He couldn't.
Not after tomight.
It was over.
For good.
No more Them.
They were not a couple - they never really had been.
Not like she was with Angel.
Why did everything come back to Angel?
He looked at the phone again. This time it rang.
Spike left it to ring a few times before picking it up.
He held it to his ear, but dais nothing.
It was Buffy.
"Spike?"
He swallowed hard, trying to force himself to speak.
"Spike? Are you there? It's me."
"I know who it is."
The vampire's voice sounded coarse and slightly hostile.
"I...just wanted to - "
"Talk." He said, cutting her off.
The conversation got them nowhere.
Both just became hurt and irritable.
They wound eachother up and it resulted inna fullscale Slayer/vampire arguement.
Nothing really changed for Spike though.
He peered through the window. She was asleep.
After gracefully descending the wall, Spike gently knocked on the door and was mildly surprised when Dawn answered,
"Want Buffy?"
He nodded, "But don't wake her."
stepping past Dawn and over the Summers' threshold, the vampire gazed up the stairs.
He looked in at the sleeping girl from her bedroom door.
As a rule, he would never enter her room without her permission - it was impolite.
This was an exception.
He crossed the room to her bed, soundlessly, and sat on the chair beside her. Smiling fondly, he gently brushed the hair back from her face but drew away slightly as she stirred.
Feeling his cold skin on hers, Buffy awoke to see him smiling faintly at her. she sat up and he drew her closer,
"I'm so sorry, Pet...I couldn't...I wanted to...but - "
"Shhh."
She ran her fingers through his hair and he pulled her close. slipping her arms around him, Buffy absent mindedly caressed the back of his neck with her fingers.
Spike closed his eyes and held her tight, nuzzling into her neck.
Chip or no chip - Spke loved Buffy.
Nothing had ever changed between them.
She was still the Slayer.
He was still a vampire.
She was the Slayer.
His Slayer.
His.
