Chapter 1

When dreaming I'm guided through another world
time and time again
At sunrise I fight to stay asleep
'cause I don't wanna leave the comfort of this place
'Cause there's a hunger a longing to escape
from the life I live when I'm awake

-Creed "Higher"

The droning of the buzzer woke everyone in the compound. A young girl who was maybe
fourteen fought to stay asleep. Between the buzzer and the electric shocks administered to those
who refused to get up, it was a losing battle. She gave up and wearily got to her feet. Another
day in hell, she thought bitterly. She had dreamt again, something the elders, specifically der
Kommisar, discouraged. While using the allotted five minutes to get her clothes in order, she
strained to remember any detail from her dream. The place in the dream was beautiful, she
remembered, with flora and fauna of every hue imaginable. In the dream she was very young and
was asking Espio about a flower. Espio! She had remembered another name. Diving quickly under a
pillow, she extracted a notebook. She smiled and wrote down all she could remember about the
dream. Absentmindedly she checked the clock. Only thirty seconds left in the allotted time before
her sonic shower. She quickly deposited all her learning materials and her light gun in her
carysak. Her first two periods were Education and Combat Training. Fifteen seconds to go. She
pulled out her favorite outfit, which consisted of a black sleeveless leotard and a blue cargo
vest, as well as the customary robe. Five seconds to go. She carefully picked up the most
precious object she owned. The only possession from the past she couldn't remember. Her sneakers. They were red
with a gold stripe down the middle and in place of laces there was a gray Lego-like thingy.
One second to go. She jumped into the sonic shower. Funny, she thought, how the shower was named
after the crazy hedgehog she dreamt about. In exactly two minutes fifty-five seconds all dirt
and infectious matter was cleansed from her body. She took the allotted one minute five seconds
to dress and the allotted two minutes to walk across the compound to room 37-B, the education
room.

Interlude 1 - Haven

A person isn't dead until they find a body.

The Guardian looked wearily at his fellow members of the brotherhood. His eyes were red
and puffy from crying. Today would have been the twentieth birthday of his missing daughter. She
disappeared eight years ago. Although they tried to look and act optimistic, the consensus of
the brotherhood was that she was dead or robotizied.
