WHAT IF- CHAPTER TWO
He began to think of all the horrible things it could be, an Elder would have been the least of his worries, but then he saw the flicker of red from behind a dwelling. What could it be? Was it an apple scrap left from the clean up crew? No, but...? He glanced around the corner to see what it could be. It was his friend Fiona and her cheeks were tear stained and her eyes red. She looked as if she had been crying for hours on end. She glanced up at him and jumped, " What *sniff* are you doing here? Where are you going?" How Jonas longed to tell someone what was going on but he couldn't, at least not while the Giver could hear beyond. "I... I..." He stumbled over the words constantly in front of Fiona, every time he looked at her he remembered his forbidden stirrings. He shook his head, " I am going to the building over there." He pointed to the Annex building, "You mean the Annex Building? Are you going to see the Giver...". She trailed off and looked at the ground, "How did you know I was going there?" he asked. She suddenly bursted out into a fresh set of tears and said, "Jonas I am so sorry! I was spying on you and the Giver while you were talking about how you will escape! *SNIFF* I saw it while I was in The House of the Old! I was watching the Elder's monitor when they all left and and I..". She began to ball and Jonas just stood there running this through his head over and over again until he said, "Well then you must come with me.".
