Demons come from every side
The darkness pulled chains over the body of the small figure. Small is not the proper word. For in the horrors of the nightfall, the body was even tinier.
It's an abnormal fear, the girl thought. Especially for someone of my age. Fourteen is too old to still be scared of the dark. Who would think of attacking me? And why would anyone?
In the darkness is the light
Catalina crouched in fear. Her red hair gave its normal blaze, but the brightness was not welcome in this dark. She knew torture was approaching. She had been accused as a witch.
When the trouble began in her town, the renowned Salem, she had her daughter returned to her homeland. She wasn't an innocent witch - Catalina was a real one.
And the punishment for witchcraft was being burned at the stake. Catalina had no will to live, but still the thought of leaving everyone she loved forever was terrifying.
Out of the shadows of the night
The small girl began to whimper. "Ginny?" a voice beside her asked.
But Ginny shook her off. "I'm fine," she stammered. Her neighbor accepted her answer, and moved her own thoughts and worries back to herself.
And Ginny's sleep was not dreamless…
In the darkness is the light
To an observer, the glow of an open fire had become commonplace. It marked the death of another accused. Another witch, dead.
Catalina was not the first to go, and nor was she the last. But somehow, her downfall produced fear in her descendant.
