Declan asked me to go ice skating with him and Peggy. I didn't want to, seeing the fact that I've never skated in my life. I don't know, I'm just not very comfortable with the idea of slipping around on the ice with only two blades one-eighth of an inch wide to balance on.
Eventually, he trapped me.
So here I am, sitting on the bench by the skating rink, watching Declan and Peggy skate..... Fun.
Whenever they come around to where I'm sitting, I always get little snippets of their conversation. It's actually kind of interesting to see how much their conversation changes in one lap around the rink.
".... haven't done this in ages. I must have been a teenager last time...."
Next lap....
".... surprising how many times I *haven't* been able to explain...."
I must be really bored if I'm getting into how much conversation changes in a given time. It's actually kind of pitiful.
I really have no idea why he wanted me to come here so much, but I'm sure he had some reason.
Maybe he just wanted me to learn how to skate. Ha! That's a good one! Me, skating! Maybe next millennium...
They're coming around again.
".... had a teacher who actually got me into this stuff...."
Interesting. Declan never told *me* anything about this teacher.
Maybe he feels sorry for me.
Sorry? Where did *that* come from?
Well, he *has* a whole lot of time with Peggy lately. Ever since.....
Ever since he first met her. I guess it was at the hospital or something. I don't know. I wasn't there, but that's beside the point.
What point? What exactly am I getting at here?
Let's see..... I have a boss that I used to spend a lot of time with. We were friends. We still are. Maybe I should get a friend that's not ten years older than me, but that's also beside the point, whatever that may be.
So anyway, Peggy comes onto the scene and suddenly, Declan's got a new best friend. Maybe he thinks I'm jealous.
He wouldn't be that far off.
We used to be a 'dynamic duo', if you know what I mean, Declan and Miranda, solving all the mysteries that come our way (excuse the cheesy superhero comment). Now the duo is Declan and Peggy, with Miranda off to the side doing research.
And now I'm referring to myself in the third person. I must be going crazy.
I pull myself out of my little thinking trance and look up just in time to see Declan slip and fall on the ice. This is exactly why I never tried to skate.
"Declan, are you okay?" Peggy and I shout in unison as Peggy helps him to his feet.
"I'm fine," Declan says, wincing a little. He regains his balance and starts to skate again.
As I watch the two of them go around the rink, something hits me.
Why am I so jealous? Do I really have a reason?
If anything, I'm the one to blame for this. I mean, if I want Declan to be my friend, then I should be more of a friend to him. I should spend more time with him, even if it spending more time with Peggy.... and learning how to skate.
So here goes....
I'll probably be going about an inch a minute and holding on to one of those orange cone things for dear life, but at least I'll be doing *something*.
