Hannah Sukova and Jane Doyl sat behind the glass divider to the nursery playing a hand of "War". It was bedtime, nightwatch, and since all of the children didn't sleep, someone was always on watch. Hannah was here more often than Jane. Hannah was winning the game of "war" through no effort of her own. Like Jane, her eyes kept floating over to the Nursery, watching, waiting for a reason to run in and hold the babies. So many times during the day they wanted to yell "Stop" to someone for mishandleing of the children, though none had said such a thing to Lydecker. In fact, Hannah had never said anything, unlike Jane who had spoken up quite a few times.
Jane threw down a 2 and looked right at the baby girl nearest her. The baby had rolled over and attempted to sit up. The girl had no name, none of them did. Unlike Hannah, she didn't remmber thier numbers. The baby girl's hair was just begining to grow, but it would be cut soon. They didn't let any of the children's hair get to long. The baby girl two cribs down began to cry. Jane started to get up and Hannah grabbed her hand.
One of the boys, about three, had sat up immediatly. He climbed out of the metal crib and jumped onto the floor. He walked up to the little baby and took her hand. Then he began to sing. "Don't cwy baby, don't cwy baby, don't cwy baby. We hate to see you cwyin'." It was amazing. Hannah and Jane smiled. The baby stopped crying and looked at him wide eyed. He sang for quite awhile. Then kissed the babies little hand and went back to lay down.
"How'd you know he would do that?" Jane asked Hannah.
"He did it last night when that little one cried," Hannah pointed to a little boy in the corner. "And that one fell the other day," Hannah said pointing to a one and a half year old. "He helped her up."
Jane smiled. "He's an exceptional little boy."
"I know," Hannah said. "That's the problem."
