Whole flocks of people had rediscovered beaches since the mist had gone away. Sunbathers, surfers, sandcastle-makers, beachcombers, and the like had literally popped up overnight. When odd pieces of rubble started washing up along the shore, people became concerned. The vaguely alien architecture and unidentifiable materials caused a minor uproar as Regent Cid's team of engineers sought to find out where it came from, to no avail. It was only a chance visit from Prince Consort Zidane of Alexandria that solved the riddle: The remains of Terra's ancient City had finally surfaced and were now washing ashore. The engineers quckly pounced on the former-Terran and grilled him incessantly on this object or that piece of technology. Generally helpful, the Consort was able to supply only a little information on the assorted doodads they had been able to salvage.

That would have been the end of it, except for the last, biggest object that had surfaced. The size of a Lindblum aircar, it was composed entirely of crystal and the common unidentifiable material that everything else seemed to be made of. When asked, the Consort had been baffled. He consulted with his sister, who merely mentioned something about 'repositories of souls' but that it was outside of her knowledge, saying that only Garland would have known more. Intrigued, Cid assigned a full-time team of his best researchers to its study. The Consort returned to Alexandria and his wife, Queen Garnet, and life went on.

Deep within the center of the object, something shimmered...

"AKANE!"

Nothing. Not a glimmer. Gone. He brought his hand up and carressed her cheek, willing some spark of life to reveal itself. Clutching her head to his chest he cried into her hair. To have fought so hard only to reach this point - where was the justice in that? It wasn't right! A manic look flashed through his face. Clutching her still form, he dashed outside and leaped. Everyone could only watch in shock as he sailed off the cliff.

As the wind rushed by him he squinted his eyes and calmly took in the rapidly approaching ground. Twisting his body so to protect her, he turned his back on the earth and looked at the sun. *If I can't protect you in life, Akane, at least let me protect you in death.*

Suddenly a blue light shimmered around him. "What? No!" Ranma shouted. "Leave me alone! Let me go!" As suddenly as the light began, it stopped, leaving behind only empty air.

Author's Notes:

Ok, as you may have guessed, this is an alternate fiction that takes place during manga volume 38. Akane dies and Ranma goes suicidal. The rest, well, we shall see. :)
